WIMPERIS (Vice-president of the Roval Institute) is NOW OPEN at Mr. ALFRED FREKE'S, 12, DUKE-STREET, CARDIFF. OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. THE "TIMES" SAYS:—"Mr. Wimperis, one of the Jitst-known members of the Institute, belongs to the schoai of David Cox, whose methods he follows Without anv slavish imitation." THE "PALL MALL" SAYS:—The exhibition of such work as that of Mr, Wimperis is the best con- futation of the KToaaers who say that the English art of the present day is entirely dominated by French influence." THE "TELEGRAPH" SAYS:—" Am«w the first- clase specially worthy of notice—the class of accepted artists giving us work even above their wont— are M-. Wimperis, &c-, .fee." THE "STANDARD" RAYS:—"Mr. Wimperis, like David Cox, is not dependent Oil seentry that is pretty anv'more than on scenery that is grand. Noble form or dainty form ie a thing of indifference to him lUll an Artist. Indeed, it is not form at all, or, at all events, not form that is permanent, that interests him seriously. It is flying lights and the shadow of a ciloud over a great land. Mr. Wimperis is the poet of the every-day country. The thing li\ts—but by how few strokes'? Art like this, as much in painting as in writing, is the Art that interests us the most in the end." THE ST. JAMES'S GAZETTE" SAYS :—" Mr. Wimperis carries on the tradition of David Cox with a vigour tliwt only one living painter can surpass." THE .1>G POST" SAYS: — Mr. Wimperis not only holcto his own, but issues from the ordeal with distinct access to feme. The effect of the exhibition upon his professional status is sensibly to improve it, and to make clsar his claim to very high rank." „ THE "GLOBE" SAYS:—"A more satisfactory exhibition of a single artist's work has not been lately sPen than the series of drawings by Mr. E. M. Wimperis." "TRUTH" SAYS:—"Mr. Winipe-rie is, in my opinion, one of the most truthful and oonscientioutl landscape painters that we possess." 44069 NEWPORT. --THE MYSTERY OF HAROLDSTONE…
THE MYSTERY OF HAROLDSTONE HALL, BY E. BOWEN ROWLANDS (Barrister-at-Law) CHAPTER v. (Continued). The hair of the clerk stood on end, a-nd not for a few minutes did he move,' but then spurred on by the desire to find out something whidh he might turn to his own advantage later on, he crept iu the darkness to the door of the room. It was almost closed, but through the chink between fciie lintel and the door itself, he could see what was being done inside. The corpse was laid out on the table, which had been used for the post-mortem and over it were loosely thrown some knen wraps. The shell stood underneath the table, but the body as yet had not been put into it. Standing near it was the man whom Picke had seen enter the room. The unfortu-nate clerk now wished he had not followed up the lead, but he could- not move, he was so fasci- nated by the horrible nature of that Y/IU-CU was going on in the room. He saw the man pull down the Jraen wraps to the <$e&d girl's waist, and gaze earnestly into the glaring eyes. It might have bem for five minutes that watcher and watcked stood in the same position, and Picke shivered. Would T-ht BKftc never move? Yes; he had bent forward and kissed her He raised the girl's arm, and, taking 0Gt of his pocket what Paoke though* wa&ai £ Ui £ £ t, Wwusfc it iato the ."mallea flesh. 11— liwaniiiiif*" ? Smothering a cry of horror, Picke crept back to his former hiding-place. A very short time had elapsed before he saw the man return to his room and shut the door. He then renewed the search for his own room, which, the door being open, he ulti- mately found. CHAPTER VI. "Well, I suppose I must be off, only in the way here," Dancer said gloomily, staring, a.t Aden. "Perhaps it is the better plan; when will you be ready?" I "Any time." There was a pause, and the rustling of a dress was heard. Mrs. Rawson entered. She looked pale, and had lost much of her vii vac io usn.es s. I "Did I bear yon say that you were going away, Mr. Dancer?" she asked, sitting down on the sofa. "Yes is—i» it not better?" Sh« did not reply, but looked curiously at him. He was sipping a btandv and1 soda with an air of perfect unconcern. Of all people— /wafcfe'&fi doefctful excejjtbwi iof Syseltoa—the ???- death of Madge Haroldstone had affected him least. He discussed the circumstanoes calmly and phiilosoiphically, and never for one instant abandoned the reserve which he thought a necessary attitude of a man about town. "My uncle leaves next week for Italy," Aden said. Yes; Mr. Fenton goes with him." Dancer lifted his eyebrows. Miss Fenton remaiins at home I" She will stay with me until her father returns," Mrs. Rawson said. A very good arrangement, too," was Aden's comment. "I think so." "Strange that nothing has been heard of Farworthy since the night before the inquest. He behaved in an extraordinary way; coming back by the last evening train, and going away direchSy the inquest was concluded, without a good-bye to anyone," Dancer said. •' Always was peculiar," Aden admitted. But a good fellow." "Do you think so?" Mrs. Hawson said meaningly. Aden nodded and proposed a stroll in the garden, but before they had time to get up Mr. Picke came in. The country air and good feeding had worked a great change in him and his habits, for he looked well, had become in the attempt to attain a friendly equality with his superiors, more grossly vulgar than ever, and affected a sporting gait. He was much disliked by the other inmates of the house, who treated him with unceremonious rudeness. However, Picke was not deterred by snubbings -he was too well accustomed to such treat- ment-and worked indefatigably to become "one of them." ] Good morning, gentlemen and ladies, or, rather, I shouldl say, lady," he began. "Fine day, all a blowing and a growing, and the temperature agreeable. So our party breaks up to-morrow. You go, I suppose you mean ?" said Dancer languidly. Precisely, but with a variation my ticket is dated1 for to-day." "Indeed," with an ill-suppressed yawn. I hope I don't disturb you," Picke mut- tered, apologetically. Not at aR, we are going into the garden," was Dancer's answer, and he rose to go. Mrs. Rawson; I beg just five minutes' private conversation with you, will you ob- lige me?" Picke said hurriedly, and she stopped and beckoned to the other two to leave. When they were alone, Picke crossed his legs, pulled his moustache, and said- Mrs. Rawson, I am here for the purpose of discovering any circumstances which may tend to throw any light on the mystery sur- rounding Mift Haroldstone's death. That is my view of imy mission, although I am well aware that mjy employers would say that I had been sent down to represent Mr. Haroldstom at the Inquest, and take his instructions after- wards. But either way, I am here, and I have a clue to the murderer." Mrs. Rawson was startled, but she said nothing. You start! Yes, I am persuaded that the unhappy lady was murdered, and, consequently, I wish to put one or two questions to you." To me, £ by ?" she asked in surprised tones. Because ..y ou are a sensible woman, I beg, pardon, lady,' and can beep a quiet tongue in your head, see!" The oompliment(?) did not favourably lm- press the lady." "Now," he resumed, "at the inquest there were cabled. Mr. Haroldstone, Mr. Aden, Miss Fenton, Miss Haroldstone's maid, yourself and the two doctors, Green and Wi'kins. The sum total of the evidence was to th-, following effect: That Miss Haroldstone retired t-o her bedroom at 4 a.m. after the ball, sat chatting with you and Miss Fenton for half-an-hour, and when you left was assisted to undress by her maid, who left her room about five o'clock. She appeared to be in good health and spirits. So far, no clue; but the maid, Johnson, deposed that she saw her mistress drink a glass of water which she poured out from a bottle kept on the wash-hand stand. That is one fact. The doctors who conducted the post-mortem examination testified- that there was no trace of poison in the viscera, but that the deceased died from the effects of poison administered hypodermic-ally. They found that the deceased's bosom, face and arms were much swollen, in consequence of erysipelas, and on the right arm, some inches above the elbow, they found a small punctured wound, through which the poison was possibly introduced into the systeyi. They were unable to state what kind of poison it was. and the I analyst-, to whom the viscera was submitted, and an eminent toxloologist. failed to come to sny definite concAu.sion,, but both agreed that the wound might have been caused1 by a small, sharp instrument. The jury on these facts found that the deceased died from A poisonir-e- injudiciously I think, brought in a verdict of wilful murder against a person or persons unknown. Injudiciously, I ;,ay, beca 113 they should have allowed i-ie to c^tch the criminal napping. But surely you don't know who he is Mrs. Rawson asked, with some show of sur- prise. "You admit tha.t it is a man then?" Admit; Mr. Picke-" "Doesn't wish to give offence. madam, I assure you. I should have said: You grasp the fact that it is a man ?" "I do not." she replied. "Well. I know that it is, and I shall have lilm yet." Mrs. Rawson evidently thought this mere rhodomontade, and made no sign of agree- ment or dissent. "I shall require your assistance; do you mind answering a few questions," Picke asked suavely. ''Certainly; if they bear on this matter." "I am greatly obliged, madam and now to avail myself of the privilege. First. Mr. Far- worthy was engaged t-o be married to Miss Haroldstone, but some time before the day of the ball was—not so engaged?" Yes; you are quite right, the match was broken off." "He left the day after the ball, and re- turned the next night, in response to Mr. Aden's telegram ?" was Pieke's ,next question. "Ye: about eleven o'clock. He went straight to his room, and I did not see him until the next morning." He left after the inquest, and has not been heard of since?" "I believe that is the case." "Number four: Did Miss Haroldstone ever express a fear of anyone?" Picke's small eyes glanced with cunning as he asked this question. Never to my knowledge." Mr. Picke was satisfied. "And now. my -dear lady, do you know if Mr. Farworthy harboured any resentment against Miss Haroldstone?" "I do not know. She was on good terms with her father ?" I Excellent." I "H'm; Miss Fenton was a bosom friend?" \"es. Air. Dancer is a comparative stranger ?"' "Yes he is Mr. Aden'.s friend." ¡ Who is Mr. Syselton 1'" 'I "Afriencfof Mr. Haroldstone's." "Oh »quiet unassuming man, I believe?" "Yes." "Let me see. a week ago the murder—you observe that I persist in calling it murder— was committed, and Mr. Syselton left one, two, three, foui dajTs ago. Did you notice anything peculiar about him, Mrs. Rawson?" No I did not." Ah I fancied he was given to bJ ushing," Picke hazarded. Mrs. Rawson smiled sadly. Yes I sup- pose he was." A few more unimportant questions were asked and answered, and then Mr. Picke bowed himself out of the room to parta.ke of luncheon. Mrs. Rawson sat thinking over what he had been talking about, and wondered whether she was right in assisting Picke to make the discovery." She was a very clever woman, [ and. although perhaps a little much at- tached to the present," studied human nature thoroughly and profited by her experience. She felt sure that Pieke was working for his I own ends, but on the whole she was not sorry that she had told him as much as she had. Madge murdered," she said to he*5fclf with a shudder. as she walked on to the lawn. "This house .s awful. I feel thoroughly miser- able. and shall be glad to get away from it. Mr. Aden, I want to speak to you." He came towards her. Will yoa make me a. promise?" she said. Y ps; to do anything in my power." "Walk into the shrub'oery with iiie, and I I will tell you the extent of your liability." He puffed at K'-s pipe. and did as he was told, "I want you in the first place to ask no j questions. Will you promise me that?"' she I said. "Yc": wil!:ngly." j Secondly, then. I want you to get for me the town address of Mr. Syselton." Aden looked incredulously at her. "You are prejudiced." I j Well, to confess the truth, I urn. You will promise?" she asked. Yes." "And. lastly, will you find out as much as ever you can about liirn?' I will do my best." Aden replied. Thank you. You haven't forgotten 'my' address. she said, archly. "50, Ea.ton-pl,»ce. Not changed?" I "No. not changed; come and see me next Sunday." I would prefer qiyj-e other day; on Sun-1 days you are hemmed ia with visitors, and as l I come to iaik to you and no else, I don't, like it so well." "Will Friday or Saturday do?" Either." Then dine with me on Friday at half-past seven." "Thanks: I will be with you." "Punctually?" Of eourse." • • « • • "Jack"' Farworthy lived in "rooms over a shop" in Regent-street from which centre lie performed his arduous dally task of doiuz nothing. He was an unpopular man, aa3 numViered few friends, Dancer and Aden being his only intimates. He mixed a great deal among what sporting papers termed the "fast briga-dc." and wa.s a regular frequenter of the music-halls and such places as sporting clubs and racecourses. He was weil known about town, but the verdict of roost people was that the more you knew him the less you liked him. Aden, however, always declared that he was one of the best of good fellows, and iiked him very mudi. It" Mas. therefore, but na-hiral that he should seek him out as scon as he returned to town. Not finding him at his favourite club. he went on to his rooms, and about eleven o'clock found him alone. Farworthy, who seamed nervous and de- pressed, was glad to sec his friend, and welcomed him heartily. (To be continued*. -?-
