-THE MASTER OF TRETQLAYS is AX HISTORICAL BOS AN CD OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. PART II. smNMBT" "WW CHAPTER, II. fa the meantime the gossip continued iu ti e 'tohen of the chateau. After having drurk the toast which opens the previous chapter, lerre took up his stick; but, instead of caving be placed himself opposite Master ^"Uonet. "And do they know his name?" said, with affected) indifference. ''Whose name?" "The new captain'# 'Our master, perhaps, knows it," replied ioionet. He will lodge at the chateau." At these words Pierre directed his steps '0vvarde the door. On passing I von ho fur- r lVely squeezed his hand, and exchanged a Stance of intelligence with Corentin. "A Sood night to all," said he. As he placed hIs hand upon the latch there was a double knook at the outer door, and Pierie paused. Two men enveloped in cloaks were intro- dUCed. the large flaps of their travelling caps Parfcly concealing their faces. Pierre, how- ^ught a glimpse of the features of one them» «-nd started, instead of going out 6 ^'ided hastily into an embrasure. Iho new comers were tall and powerful °ne whose features Pierre Rouan in peroei^ed was remarkably handsome, and full vigour of voutli. The other was .T-haired, and apparently about sixty of aa*. "Whoever you alre, you are welcome," said Simonet. "What do you wish?" The youngest of the two strangers, throw- ing his oloak OIl one side, displayed a oaphain's uniform. "I wish to spealc Ao M. Herve de Vaunoy," he replied. "The new c-aptainf." whispered the servants of the Tremlays. Pierre Rouain then gained the door without noise, after having es changed a second glance of intelligence with I von and Corentin. "So! it is he who ;is the new captain!" he muttered slowly, a8 with a pensive air lIe plunged into the paths of the forest. Master Simonet iissumed a grave and solemn deportment, in order suitably to ful- fil his duty of introiiueer, in the place of Master Alain, the steward, who was getting old. and who usually, a t this hour of the day, was eit'her asleep or ha .If drunk with brandy. He preceded the mew comers into the saloon, in which were seated1 M. doe Vaunoy and his family. f The old man, who acted as valet to the young captain, had ail' honest and austere I expression of countenance; his form, slightly curved. aJone announooél. fatigue or suffering, his features were runwriukled. and his serene aspect expressed the most perfect I equanimity of mind. As to the handsome young captain, he was gay, frank, loyal,, and oordial. He wa,' apparently about twenty- five years of age. The valet called himself Jude Leker; the master was named Didier, only. The good squire of N/icolas Treme has not greatly changed during these twenty years. It might be two hours after mid-day when Didier and Jude got beyond the first trees of the forest. Jude seemed to breathe with delight an old atmosphere. He saluted each old trunk with a friendly and almost filial regard. f He was, by my faith, a valiant old man, this Nicolas Treme," oried Didier, interrupt- ing a long yarn that Jude was spinning him. "I love his leather glove which weighed a pound; and I should have liked to see the sorry figure the Regent must have cut." "The Regent put us in the Bastile," re- plied Jude, with a sigh. "It was, in conscience, the least he could do, my good fellow!" "Nicolas Theme—anay God preserve his soul!—was already very old. And then he was incessantly thinking of the child." "What child?" interrupted Didier. "George Treme, who must be at this hour a bold soldier, if he has preserved in his veins a drop of the good old blood of his fatshers." The story flagged; Didier yawned; and- Jude resumed. "He thought then of the child who was in the country, without a protector, and without support. Old age and sorrow are tco much at one time, my young master. Nicolas Treme died, aud bequeathed to me the little Master "And what is become of this George?" asked Didier. "Heaven knows! I was set at liberty two years after the death of my master. I had no money; and if Providence had not sent me in your path at the moment you wire seeking a valet for the journey, I do not know how I should have regained Brittany —my deair, mv noble Brittany!" repeated Jude, with tears of joy in his eyes. Didier stopped, and extended his hand to him. "Thou hast an honest heart, my good fellow, and I love thee for thy attachment to the memory of thy old master, and for the love that thou hast for t:hy country. If thou wish, thou shalt no more quit me." Jude respectfully touched the hand that the captain offered him. "I should wish it," he murmured, shaking his head, "upon my word I should wish it; for there is something in you which re-calls to me the frank loyalty of Treme: but I must look after the child, and I am a Breton. Did you not tell me that you came to annihilate the last remains of Breton resistance?" "Certainly! Some hundreds of furious fools. When rebellion feels itself feeble, it takes to plundering. I come to punish robbers. "In mv time," said Jude. repressing an angry gesture, "the Brothers Breton did not deserve that name." "It is true; those thou speakest of were but obstinate maniacs—for the Brothers Breton have become the Wolves." "The Wolves!" repeated Jude, without comprehending, "They have themselves chosen this savage nickname. It is not Brittany, it is the Wolves I m £ !C} to contend with, by. the \Kiae'a ?4" -??-. "r don't know what the Wolves are doing," replied Jude, "but they are Bretons, and you axe a Frenchman." "Let us say no more about it," said the captain, gaily. "Whether I am a French- man or not is more than I can say. Drink a oup, my good fellow," he said, extending his travelling gourd to Jude. "And now we must turn towards the east; here is a by- road which must lead to St. Aubin du Cormier." "It is my route," replied Jude; "and we shall separate here, for you are going to Rennes, I believe?" "I am going to the chateau of Tremlays," said Didier. Jude started, and became thoughtful. "You have already been in the country," he said, after a pause, "for you know it as well as I do. Perhaps this is not your first visit to the olxateau of Tremlays?" "Pex-haps," repeated the captain, who seemed to wish to avoid a more categoric reply. "If you have been there," "Outinued Jude,1 whose features expressed exceeding curiosity, "you must have seen a young man-a hand- some young mau-tibe heir of these noble domains-the only scion of a race which is I as old as Brittany." "Name uml ?" "George Theme." It was now the captain's turn to be astonished. For the first time he reconciled this name of Treme with that of the chateau, and understood that the old man whose sad history he had just heard was the late Master of Tremlays. "I have never seen this young man," he replied. t "What on earth have they done with our young master?" muttered Jude to himseif. I The captain became thoui^htfuil, for a doubt arose in his mind, touching the fate of the heir of Treme. "My duty is clear," resumed Jude; "I will perform it. Sir," he added, in A voice that emotion rendered solemn, "I adjure you, by your title of gentleman, to lend ove; your aid." A sad smile came to the lips of the captain. "Gentlemen!" he said. "By your mother!" responded Jude. "My mother!" said the captain. "Why speakest thou to me of titles and of mother?" Then he added after a pause, "But I am a king's officer, at all events; thou shalt have my aid." "A thousand thanks," cried Jude. "I will prove my gratitude by serving; you faithfully, and as long as you please. Now we will return together to the chateau." They proceeded for a quarter of a mile upon the road which leads to St. Aubin du Cormier, when Jude, turning the left, 'suddenly plunged into a thick copse. Didier stopped his horse. "Where dost thou lead me?" he demanded. "To the spot where Nicolas Treme, my master, departing from the Court of Paris, buried the hope and fortune of his race." "Thou hast, then, great confidence in me," said Didier. "I would trust my life to you," said Jude, hesitating but for an instant; "but the treasure of Treme is not mine. You are right," he continued, after a moment's pause, "it is better I keep this secret to myself." "And it is better that I keep out of this wilderness, which is near the Wolves' retreat. They mir" :te me. my good fellow ^"3. you will 0 bara. Jude dismounted, and made his way on foot through the thicket. Left alone, the young officer stretched him- self Upon the grass. His thoughts were pleasant ones. Of unknown, and. probably, obscure origin, he had, by a- succession of happy circumstances and his own merit, reached' a position in society which few attain until a much later period in life. His mission in Brittany was not without impor- tance and he hoped easily to reduce this handful of intrepid, but simple and rude men, who still opposed themselves to the levying of the impost, molested the submis- sive subjects of the king, and sometimes even had the audlaoity to lay hands upon t;he funds of the Government. But his arrival in Brittany, apart from its political nature, possessed an interest for himself personally. The preceding year, he had passed six months at Rennes, as one of the suite of the Count of Tou'-oiue, governor of the prov.-nce. who had for years been his friend and benefactor. There he became enamoured of Alice de Vaunoy, of Tremlays, and she did not attempt to dis- guise her preference for him. They met frequently at the governor's palace. M. de Vaunoy either did not or would not perceive their mutual attachment, which surprised every one, as it was well known that his pretensions, as regarded a suitable establish- ment for his only daughter, were of a very exalted kind, and aimed, in fact, at nothing less than M. Bechameil, Marquis of Nointel, comptroller-royal of the impost, and at that time one of the most opulent financiers in Europe. Notwithstanding this. Vaunoy, who at first regarded the young soldier of fortune with pul-ed disdain* suddenly uaid as much court -?- to him as to the heirs of the' most powerful families. This unaccountable change of be- havioir commenced from the time that he took a man named Lapierre into his service but it wa.s scarcely to be supposed that this trifling domestic arrangement could have in- fluenced the ulterior conduct of the Master of Tremlays. Be it as it may, one night when Didier was returning from Vaunoy's hotel, with his heart filled with tmorous thoughts, he was attacked in the streets by three men. He had only his dress sword; but he used it so effectually that lie beat off his cowardly assailants, and escaped slightly wounded to the palace. As the count and his suite left Rennes the following day. the affair was not investigated. The gallant captain's love for Alice was not the tender souvenir that occupied his thoughts, as he lay, half dreaming, on the grass, awaiting tihe return of Jude. He had formed an attachment to one in a more humble sphere of Jifc—the Flower of the Forest, whose natural grace and simplicity had captivated him yet more than her un- rivalled beauty. The image of this fair girl, at this moment, wholly occupied his thoughts; they had last seen each other near this very spot. "If she came now'" he murmured, throw- ing an eager glance into the deep shade of the thicket. There is a Providence for lovers. A sweet and distant voice seemed to respond to his aspiration. He listened. The voice drew nearer and nearer; it was singing the melancholy plaint of Arthur of Brittany. drew nearer and nearer; it was singing the melancholy plaint of Arthur of Brittany. "Flower of the Forest murmured Didier. bae bounded out of the thicket, and. on .J seeing him, sank, overpowered with emotion, to the ground. Didier took the Flower of the Forest ia his arms, and placed her on the grass near him. The poor child was too happy for words. After a silence of some minutes 1 she began to regard, with infantile joy, his lVw uniform. "HfOW beautiful thou 1nt!" she said, "how beautiful tihou art! and how I love thee =$ Didier tocik her little white hand, and raised it to his lips. "You have grown," he _•> replied; "you are handsomer than ever." 'I "I have wept, however," she replied. "Why do vou weep, Marie?" he asked. >j "Because the solitary forest paths spoke to me of thee and of thy absence, Didier; .? because the grass had become green again in the spots where thou used to sit; because -s my father told me that thou wouldst return t no more." l' "rdiy father!" repeated Didier, with astonishment; "he knew, then-" "He knows everything f' cried the young girl, who became serious.
