""DOROTHY LINEAL"I
"DOROTHY LINEAL" I A NOVEL. I CHAPTER V. Bently, a hard-feaiared stubborn York- shire woman, was Dorothy s old nurse, and her love for her nursling seemed to have absorbed all the tenderness in her nature, When Elizabeth entered the room, ste was J sitting by Mr. Lineal's bedside, ba'h.'ii;? his temples. She rose at once. Deeply as she resented the second Mrs. Lineal's entrance into the family, she was too good a servant to be openly disrespectful to her mastei s Vife; and it was only to Dorothy, and to her only on rare occasions, that she allowed her dislike of Elizabeth to find expression is words. "I've never seen him so bad as this, ma'am," she said, as Elizabeth came to the bedside and gazed fixedly down at her hus- band's pale shrunken face. He doesn't seem to get back his breath at all. I do wish Dr. Joyce was here." "He -will here presently," Elizabeth answered. She placed her fingers upon her husband's wrist. The pulse was very feeble. AI she bent over him his breathing was Bcaroely perceptible. She turned to the oid ,ervant. Where are those drops the doctor ga.ve us?" she asked. BeDtJy held out the bottle to her. She y 8h&dl had it in her h&nd. But it's no good, ma'am. I've tried, and Miss Dolly's tried. BI<3 can?t swallow. I wish the doctor would come." Elizabeth took the bottle and poured a few drops into the medicine-spoon lying on the tafyle. Her hand was perfectly steady. Then she bent over her husband again. Edward," she said. "It's no good, ma'am," Bently said. Her hand went out as if to draw Elizabeth back; but she did not touch her. "You're doing more harm than good. 'Keep him as quiet as you can,' was the doctor's orders, ma'am." Mrs. Lineal did not appear to hear her. "Edward," she said again, very gently and firmly. Dorothy had conM into the room. and stood at Bently's side. Her father's ears had been deaf to her voice, piteously as she had' called upon him; but his eyelids opened now, and his eyes had a flicker of recognition in them as they became fixed upon his wife's face. You must drink this," she said. She slipped her arm beneath his head, raised it, and put the spoon to his lips. "You must drink it," she said again; and his lips' opened and he drank, his eyes still fixed upon her faoe. She lowered him gently back upon the I ^pillows, and dre,/a«v her arm. His eye- Ikls closed aga,in. a'ready the deathly hoe was leaving ^a,ce> and his breathing TOas stronger. His own timgers closed over^1*1 in a tight clasp, and, turning slightf1* the pillow. he fell asleep. "Lie down on tf-Ofa, dearie," the old nairse said to a tender whisper. "You aren't fit to Yes-I'll lie doy the girl answered. She moved aw^yf'^ the bed, and lay down upon tbte sof4l her faoe turned to the wall. Khe could- only the ears which bad been deaf i ^ords *4. heard I Elizabeth's voice, that she, who had been his heart's darling for so long, was forgotten for a stranger. Mr. Lineal was still sleeping when the doctor came. The doctor told them that all danger was over for the present, though it was impossible to say fhow soon another attack might occur. I warned him last week that his heart was in a very feeble condition," he said to the wife, as they stood apart together after his examination of the patient. He must avoid all excitement, all company, live the life of an invalid, in fact. I assure you his state is a very critical one." There was a veiled rebuke in the old doctor's words, but Elizabeth's face showed no sign of feeling. It was cold, as usual, impassive, unyielding. I "You must speak strongly to him to- morrow," she said. "Make him see the folly of attempting too much." Anyone watching the doctor would havs seen him shrug his shoulders more than once as be went down the staircase to his gondola. Has that woman a heart at all?" he was thinking. "How did she come by those eyes of her s. I wonder? They are strange eyes for a woman like that to have. But how that pretty little girl detests her!" The old doctor would have known how mere a mask that cold impassiyenes8 of Eliza- beth's was if he had seen her a little late- bv her child's cot. She had gone to her room to change her white dress for a loose wrapper. The nursery door was ajar, and as she returned towards her husband's room she entered. A nightlight burned dimly on the table and ena-bled her to see her boy in his cot, in the deep rosy sleep of healthy infancy. One dimpled arm was flung up above his head, the other encircled a little toy-horse his father had given him a few days before. He had thrown off the clothes since the nurse had fallen asleep, and his mother gently drew them over him. Her hand just brushed his curls, and he stirred and smiled in his sleep. Elizabeth bent over him till her tips touched the curls her fingers had smoothed a moment before. "My baby, my own," she whispered. There was the sound of an opening door, of a footstep in the passage. Elizabeth moved quickly from the cot. "You here, ma'am ?'' Bently said, ae she met Mrs. Lineal at the nursery door. Eliza- beth's neglect of her bonny boy was bitterly resented by Bently, coldly as she herself felt towards the child. I hope nurse is always careful with that hght." Elizabeth said, glancing towards the night-light. "And I must ask her to keep this door shut. See that it is quite shut now, please." She passed out of the nursery as she spoke, and lientlv carefully shut the door. Then she followed her mistress. "I was coming to find you, ma'am." she said. "Miss Dorothy ought to -o to bed. It s :io good three sitting up, .when perhapa not one may be wanted. And there may be l nights when she will want all the ,strength she has." Miss Dorothy must- please herself," Eliza- beth answered coldly; .and then she entered the bedroom without giving Bently time to say more. Dolly had drawn a. chair close to the bed. and she sat there, with her head resting against the pillows. As her step-mother entered she looked round, with an expression on her face which meant, "This is my place; you shall not turn me out bf it." Elizabeth came close* to her before she spoke. I "Do you mean to sit up, Dorothy? Are you quite determined on it?" "Do you think I could sleep?" said the girl. She raised her head and sat upright, but made no further movement. Elizabeth slightly raised her straight dark eyebrows. "Suppose your father is ill like this for weeks? Do you mean to stay awake all the time?" "I mean to sit up to-night." Dolly said. doggedly. Very well, then, I will go to bed." Eliza, beth spoke very quietly and decidedly, and turned towards the door. Dorothy's face became very pale, but she did not move or speak. It was Bently who rose from her seat to stop Elizabeth. "Miss Dolly!" she said, with a pitiful im- ploring look at the girl. The girl rose slowly, laboriously, as if every limb had leaden weights attached to it. "Mrs. Lineal, I will go," she said. "My father may want you. He will not want me." There was an infinite bitterness in the last words, low as was the tone in which they were uttered; but Elizabeth did not appear to notice the bitterness. "It shall be as you please," she replied. "It is quite needless for us both to stay up." 1 will go," Dorothy said again and she walked out of the room without another- word. She went to her own room, and Bentlv followed her.. You must get right into bed, my pretty one, the old nurse urged, turning the white coverlet back from the pillows. "Come now, dearie, 'tis no good to wear yourself out Mrs. Lineal is right enough there." "She would not let me stay! She knew how I wanted to stay!" Dolly said, speaking as if she had not heard. "It was cruel— cruel of her! I will never forgive her— ne,er 1" She looked at Bently; her eyes were dry, her pretty face was set in hard bitter lines that strangely aged it. "My dearie, don't take it to heart like this the old nurse begged anxiously. "The master will be himself to-morrow. There's no accounting for the whims sich folk take. And Mrs. Lineal meant well to you. For you aren't strong enough to stand much sitting-up. Now, let me put you to bad. | toy pretty one. I'll go back and sit with j 'her; but I must see you in bed first." £ The force of habit was too strong for Dorothy to resist Bently's arrangements for 1 her comfort. She allowed the old nurse to undress her, and laid herself obediently down in her bed but the hard miserable look never left her face. "I shall not sleep," she said. "Call m". I shail be listening. I will come in a moment." "My dearie, be sure I'll call you! But nobody will be wanted. The master will nobody will be wanted. The master will sleep like a child all night. Do you think the doctor would have left him if he'd thought hed be wanted again before morning? Why, you used to be the bravest of us all. Miss Dorothy, when your father was taken bad in the old times." "The old times They were dear old times weren't they. nursie?" said the girL in a tone which brought a rush of tears to the old woman's eyes. lain t no good to talk of them now, my pet." she answered, smoothing down her darling's hair. "And try to sleep, there's a j good girl. Your old nurse is watching for you, remember that." sTo be continued.
