Xni."?^6 8lightest ?- I was not thinking of myself," was her passionate reply. "I am not so selfish as that. You do not know the danger And they will be here presently. You will not have to stay here long." She released his arm and sank back upon her seat. A sudden giddiness had come over her. He bent quickly towards her. "You feel faint again?" "No no—it is nothing!" Then she added- "But do not go." "I will not. They must search for us here sooner or later. And the fog may clear." His tone was cool and matter-of-fact, very different from the tone in which he had spoken a moment before. Elizabeth made no reply to him, and for a time there waa silence between them. The mist still hung thickly over the hit!. There was no sound but the faint indistinct ripple of the burn. The sky was hidden. They could not see each other's faces. But each was keenly conscious of the presence of the other. It was she who spoke first. "Will you tell me how you came to find him?'' she asked. There was a moment's pause before he answered her. He was not able to command his voice at once. Then he told he how he had heard the frightened cry, and had turned back. She listened silently; but he could hear the low sobbing breaths she drew. "Won't you let me thank you?" she said. when he finished. There had been a brief silence before she spoke. He saw her take up the child and hold it against her breast as she looked up at him. "He is all I have." she said. "You -have saved him for me." she said. "You have saved him for me." "I am glad." He spoke shortly, almost roughly. He moved away from her abruptly, and went outside the shed, and stood there gazing down into the fog. Wild words of love and reproach were trembling on his lips. But he held them back. In word at least he would be true to Dorothy. He had a strqng will, apd he kept the words in check. But he could not go back to her he could not speak to her. He had meant to tell her that he had spoken too harshly to her that morning, but all that was possible to him was silence. If he spoke to her at all it must be to tell her that, false as she had been to him, he loved her—loved her more wildly, more madly than he had loved her in the days when he trusted her! How the struggle would have ended for him he was never sure; for an interruption came. A shout rang up from the dark- ness below, and then another in answer to his response. Elizabeth started to her feet and hurried forward to the edge of the platform on which the little shed was built. He followed her, and drew her back with a firm, authoritative hand. He was master of himself once more. "Stay here," he said. "They cannot misa us now. They heard my answer. They are close to us." CHAPTER XXX. Mrs. Lineal was threatened with all kinds of pains and penalties if she got up to break- fast the next morning and she was not sorry to have a quiet time in her own room. Little Guy had) slept with her. His nurse had made herself ill with self-reproach and fright, and was not in a fit state to take charge of him. But Bently, who had always longed to have full charge of Guy, was secretly ,-? ?-' gratified at the nurse's carelessness, which justified so fully her own strong opinion of her, came to fetch Guy when the housejuaid lighted Elizabeth's fire, and caried him) off to the nursery. Nancy brought up Elizabeth's breakfast, l1.D.d Mrs. Ward and Dorothy and the girls ejiph paid her a brief visit as they went down- stairs. But after breakfast she was ktft alone for a long time. She had promised Mps. Ward not to get up till she came to her agam and she felt no inclination to break her pro- mise. A strange languor possessed hjjr owing to the previous evening's intense and painful excitement. And she dreaded going down-stairs—she dreaded meeting John. It was soothing to lie there in the quiett prettv room, without any sound but the, crackling of the logs in the grate. After a time, however, she lysgan to wondet' that no one. came to her. It was a pourinr • wet morning; the rain pattered fast against the winder. The Ward's and their guests could have gone out. Oncet Elizabeth, had caught what seemed to be the sound' of dog-cart wheels; but she supposed she bad been mistaken. And after that there had been perfect silence. She was beginning to think that she would call to Bently to bring her Guy, when at last she heard a footstep in the passage, and Mrs. Ward came in. She was looking very grave as she entered; but she smiled as she met Elizabeth's anxious glance. "I just looked into the nursery as I passed. Bently is in the seventh heaven of delight, with your boy climbing about her, and Dorothy playing games with him, and no one to interfere! Dorothy has gone there for a little comfort, poor child! Doctor Worton has been summoned home." She sat down by Elizabeth and looked critically at her. "You are much too pale still, my dear. I think I shall keep you here all day." "Oh, no-please I" said she, smiling faintly. "There can have been no letters yet. Was it a telegram?" I "Yes. We ought to have had it yesterday but the fog was too thick for the man to* venture here. Dolly is coming in to you. She will tell you all about it. There has been a sad affair at if'ordham. Some young fellow has shot himselt-.Johnson. J. daresay you know the name?" I .'1 know him well, Elisabeth said, in a low tone. Since she came to Macnamar, Nancy had spoken more than once of Sir Theo. Courtly's bad influence over the young man; and, though the sisters had not openly confessed it t oeach other, they knew whose influence had helped the baronet in drawing the weak affectionate lad astray. "is he dead?" she asked, after a painful pause. 'In imminent danger,' the telegram said. It was from your father, my dear. Doctor Warton started instantly. He hopes to catch the midday express from Edinburgh. He >8eems to know the poor mother well." "Yes. he is very fond of them all," Eliza- th said absently. Then she looked up at Mrs. Ward with tears in her eyes. "He is her only son. She worships him. And he was such a good, dear, charming boy. Everybody who knew him loved him." "The Doctor spoke of gambling debts. jUe seemed to regret that he had not been at home. The poor boy might have con- fided in him. I never liked Doctor Warton so well as I liked him this morning, Eliza. beth. I had thought him so stern and cold and unapproachable. "Ask Fordham what he is," Elizabeth said with a thrill inber voice. "He is not cold or stern to the poor and suffering." "Well, I will s*y he showed proper feeling this morning. But poor little Dolly—she fojmd it hani 1I84'k to bear up! It was otjly tboiMA* to Fordham her- -) i self so soon that made her able to do it. How devotedly she loves him Get her to come and talk to you about him. It will be the best comfort she can have." And Mrs. Ward got up with the air of one who had still her morning's work before her. "I have not been into the kitchen yet, and cook will be boiling what she ought to roast, and roasting what she ought to boil. Don't get up till ^Dorothy comes, at any rate. I know she is longing to have a talk with you." "I should like to see Nancy too," said Mrs. Lineal "Will you ask her to come to me, Mrs. Ward? When can we have a letter from Fordham, I wonder? I am very anxious to know more. Did you say the telegram was from my father?" "Yes. Nancy shall bring it up to you. Don't look so distressed, my dear. The poor young man isn't dead. And Doctor Warton will get to Fordham to-night. There will be a telegram from him earjy to-morrow." But Doctor Warton did not reach Fordham as rapidly as he had hoped, It was close upon six o'clock the next morning before the train drew up at the platform. He sprang out and looked round expectantly. Excepting for the sleepy porter who had shouldered his portman- teau. there was no one; on the platform. "I expected someone to meet me," he said. "Mr. Reynolds has been on and off here 'most all night, sir," said the porter. "You're nigh six hours late It's a bad business about poor Mr. Johnson, str. They didn't think he'd live more than an hour or two after he done it. 'Twas that Courtlev drove him to it. Oh, he's a hard 'un, he is "Yes—it's a bad business," the doctor re- turned gravely. "Do you know where he is ? At IIi" mother's, I suppw» ■ But there is Mr. Re "Tjds." And he hastened for- ward to meet a slightly-built erect gentleman who was just entering the dimly-lighted station. Doctor War*4u> waa ehocked at the face -7= he 6aw as they met under the lamp that hung above the ticket-office door. Drawn, haggard, unshaven, with blood-shot eyes and pale, unsteady lips, he could hardly recognise the debonair handsome man with whom he was so familiar. Mr. Reynolds put out a shaking hand and clutched the doctor's. "Thank heaven, you are here You are in time—or were ter minutes ago. He is at my house. Come." They hurried duwn the silent High-street, and stopped before the old house. Mrs. Reynolds had heard their footsteps, and was standing with the door open. She was as greatly changed as her husband. Her fresh bloom and her light-hearted air were gone. I Her features were sharpened and aged. There was a pitiful shrinking expression in her eyes when they rested on her husband, which was .in sad contrast to the fond pride they betrayed of old. "I have a fire here. and hot coffee." she said, her voice hardly raised above a whisper, as she led them into the dining-room. "He's Jn Bessie's room, doctor. His mother and Doctor Rockiey are there." "I will see Rockiey for a mcment before I go up," said the doctor. He threw off his overcoat, and took the coffee poured out for him. "Would you see if he could come down to me, Mrs. Reynolds?" He turned to her husband as she left the room. "Just tell me as much about it as you can. How is it he is here?" "It was the nearest place. We found him in the meadows, just outside the garden. He had left this house only half an hour before." Mr. Reynolds spoke in broken sentences, with a pause between each, as if he found it difficult to frame his words. On the wav from the station to the house he had hardly spoken 1 at all. John Warton had been unable to draw a connected sentence from him. "Had you any idea he was contemplating such a desperate act?" he asked, turning his eves from Mr. Reynolds's face and looking thoughtfully into the fire. "Do you know any reason for it?" "He was horribly in debt! He was afraid to face his mother—but—" Mr. Revnoids stopped, his face working strangely. "By heaven, Wa-rton, I had no knowledge of his state of mind He pretended not to care. He got up from the table with a laugh. Courtiv and Will Rowells were here, you know. It was Christmas Day." Doctor Warton made no comment. But the whole scene rose before him with vivid cleamess-the four men sitting round the table in the warm bright room; the silent i breathless game; the flushed despairing face of the lad bent over'the caids. He had not seemed to care. He had got up from the table with a smile o" his face. A shiver went through the doctor's strone frame. He turned to Afr. Reynolds with a stern condemnatory look; b/f he did not speak; the agony of self-reproach on Mr. Reynolds's face sileuced him. "I know," Mr. Reynolds said, in a low intense voice. "His blood is on my head. Do you think I need you to tell me that?'' ¡ He caught the doctor's arm. "But you must save him If I could give my life for this I would gladly do so-I would. His mother ¡ Warton. Her eyes follow me! I cannot forget them 1 "Come, don't give way like this!" John re- joined authoritatively. "We don't want you all on our hands just now. Isn't that Rock- lays footstep on the stairs? I think it is. Send him in here to me, will you ? And we will do the best we can. depend on it. He is young and strong. Everything ia in his favour." Mrs. Reynolds crept down- stairs as her has band stood in the ball. I have a tire in our room. Come ana lie down. You rnusb't go on like this! There are others who are more to blame than you." Her pride m him was shattered. The idol she had we: slipped lay low in the dust. But she loved him still, with a fond clinging love that would always find excuses for his faults. The time came when that love was his best earthly comfort; but he turned from it now. He could have borne reproachcs much belter than he could bear her fend endeavours to make his sin seem less in his own eyes.
