44DOROTHY LI NEA L" A NOVEL. ? OEEAPTEIR XV. (Continued). "Nobody will believe you have had the chance. They'll say he has flung you over. You've gone too far. You must marry him." "No." She drew farther back. There was I 110 passion in her face, but it was set ve;y thard. "You mast, I tell you!" She did not answer him this time, but he Saw unshaken resolve in her steady gaze. "Is it for Tom Jnwett's sake you're fling- ing Willcox over?" he said, with an unpleasant sneer. "You won't find it so easy to whistle 'him back to vou. You'll fall between two stools if you don't take care. It strikes me •Master Tom is quite cured of his fancy for you." He had sent the cruel arrow, home this time. He saw it, and quickly followed up Ài9 advantage. "It was never more than a boy's fancy, child. Do you think a fellow who loved you like a oian would give you up so easily? Willcox is worth a thousand of him." "I cannot marry him," she repeated. "We will see, my dear. Bessy refused Lineal at first, you know." If he had suspected that Nancy knew the tl'uth about Elizabeth's marriage, he would hardly have dared tn refer to it. She had moved to the door; but she stopped and faced him. He shrank before her look. He saw she knew. Elizabeth was a good girl-a good girl! he muttered, hurriedly. "But it was a capital match for her. And He broke off, for Nancy suddenly burst into pa,«e'onatc sobs. "Nancy, Nancy, don't! I'll call Jane! I wish now I had never let you go on this mad expedition. It has been too much for you." But she would not let him call the servant. She managed to control herself ir a moment. "I will go up now," she said. He stood and watched her. She went up the stairs very s!owly, supporting herself by the balustrade; but, weak and fragile as she looked, he felt that there was no power in him to shake the resolve she had formed that night. He went back to the dining-room with a heavy frown on his face. "But there's one good thing come out of it," he muttered to himself, as he gazed down at the dying fire. "I've parted her and Jowett. And she'H soon stop fretting after him. Though I don't believe I should have had the heart to do it if I'd known she cared so much." Nancy herself had not known till that niglit how n.uch she cared for Tom. And the knowledge had changed her irom & girl into a woman. Only a; few hours before she had thought it possible to marry the wealthy brewer. How cou:d she have thought it possible, she wondered, as she lay awake in her little room that night. How could she have behaved so shamefully? Her punishment was well deserved, she thought, while the bitter tears came. Tom had loved her once, but she had forfeited his love for ever. Come luckier, better girl would take the pktce she had flung away so lightly. And TIftn would never knovr how dearly she had loved him. Be would always think of her as a heartiest coquette, and be glad he had given her up. CHAPTER XVI. Dorothy did not return to the hospital after that night. Two of the men most severely injured died the next day, and two others were transferred to the County Hospital. So her help was not needed any further. But that night's experience for her had been a wonderful one. "You are a born nurse," Doctor Warton said to her the next day. He had come in at twiiight to see if she had been properly resting. He had found her alone in the drawing-room, by the fire. Mrs. Reynolds had gone with Nancy to an "At Home." Nancy had pleaded to be allowed to stay away, but her mother had insisted on her going. "There'll be all sorts of tales about you, if you shut yourself up at home,' hw mother said, sharply. "For Mrs. GOQHI won't k4 a soul believe it's you who've broken off the I engagement with her brother. Why couldn't you behave sensibly, and see him when he came to-day, and make it up? He went away in a great rage, I can tell you. And he won't silence Mrs. Goard's tongue." So Miss Nancy Reynolds put on a pretty blue silk, and went with her mother, to find that her entrance caused a sudden and un- comfortable silence, which betrayed how eagerly they had been discussing her and Mr. Willcox. "It is a pity you have to be a young lady in society," continued Doctor Warton to Dolly, smiling as he saw how his praise had made her blush. "If you weren't, I should advise you to have some hospital training. It is a pity such rare gift as yours should be wasted." Dorothy's expressive eyes were fixed fixed eagerly upon his face. "My father used to praise my nursing," she said, softly. "He was often ill, and before— before he married Miss Reynolds I was always his nurse. I don't suppose they would let me go into a hospital. But couldn't I help here sometimes, doctor? You know we are going to live at Clyde. I should be so thank- ful to be of some use! And I would be punctual and regular. Couldn't I come to the hospital for a day or two a week?" "Yes—it might be managed," he told her. And then, after a pause, he began in a rapid, abrupt tone to tell her something about his sister. Shi had been a hospital nurse, had risen quickly is her profession, had been yOEtf -?- in charge of a small branch hospital, and, after a year's work there, had died of diphtheria, caught from one of the patients. He unfastened a little locket he always wore on his black watch-guard, and handed it to Dorothy open. "You remind me of her," he said, after watching her face for a moment as it was bent over the little portrait. I Dorothy's heart thrilled at the words. She glanced up at him; and he went on quickly— "Don't you see the likeness yourself? And j your voice reminds me of hers. I thought so again when you spoke a moment ago." "I should be glad to think I was like her," she said, softly, looking down at the portrait again. "But you don't know how selfish and self-absorbed I have 'been. My own little troubles have filled up my life. But I want to be different. I resolved to be different last night. And, if I could do some work, if you could make me of some use in the hospi- tal-" She looked up at him, putting the little locket back into his hand, and met en- couragement in his grave, friendly gaze. "You will help me-won't you, Mr. Warton?'' "Yes—I will help you," he promised. And, though he added nothing more, Dolly felt she was approved. Mr. Reynolds found them still talking when he came in from his afternoon visit to the club. "You hepe, Warton? Miss Lineal, what enchantments have you been weaving to keep the doctor here at this hour?" ?[ 1 earned a little rest-I have had 3, ft' said the doctor. He did not move | from his position, but remained standing by the chimney-piece, one arm resting on it. He was not the man to show any discom- posure, even if he felt it. "My dear fellow, it does my heart good to see you taking some rest, like other people!" Mr. Reynolds exclaimed, heartily. He stirred the fire, sending a ruddy light through the room. "And pray don't let me interrupt your talk- Was it about Wagner?" "We haven't mentioned his name," the doctor replied, glancing across at Dorothy with a smile. It was wonderful how his smile changed the character of his face. and brought out all the latent tenderness and humour in it. "Walt Whitman, then, or Ibsen, or Mere- dith ? I know Miss Lineal is an authority on all of them. I can see it in her face." "Dr. Warton has been telling me about the London hospitals, Mr. Reynolds." "We may talk about the great subjects Mr. Reynolds has marked out for us another time, I hope, for now I must go," said the doctor, moving leisurely from his lounging attitude. "I haven't bored you this afternoon-have I Mr. Reynolds, who was standing with his back to the fire, regarded Dorothy smilingly. "She wouldn't care to tell you so, doctor. however much you had bored her. Confess, now, Miss Lineal-aren't we very much afraid of him? Everybody is. We all stand in awe of Warton." "I am not at all afraid1, said the lady addressed, with a pretty blush. She gave the doctor her hand as she spoke; for he had stopped beside her to say good-bye. "You have been so kind to me," she added, to him. "I don't think you could make me afraid of you now if you tried." Doctor John Warton carried the memory of her sweet, frank look away with him. What a sweet wife she would make for some lucky fellow^ one day, he thought as he sat over his lonely dinner that evening! It was a dreary room he sat in—a comfortless, handsomely- furnished room, in which only the upholsterer had taken an interest. The regulation side- board was there, as were the regulation chairs, and the sufficiently-handsome carpet and cur- tains. The table was laid with snowy damask and silver; there was an epergne with flowers in it—round, tightly tied bunches of Michael- mas daisies, without any green leaves to them. As the leading doctor in Fordham, he was bound to live in a certain way, and he accepted the obligation as he accepted other wearisome obligations in his profession. It was a warm, well-lighted, luxurious room, but with no homely touch about it. And that night, as he sat in lonely state, he felt the barren- less and cheerlessness as he had never done before, keenly as he had often felt them. After all, why should he look forward to spend all his life in loneliness like this? he asked himself, as he looked about him. Why should he regard his life as ended because one woman had deceived him? If she was false, all women were not false. He had loved her once. The passionate, absorbing love he had giv.:n her he might never fee! again for another woman. But he loved her no longer. His brow became stern, and his mouth set in its hardest lines, as he told himself this. He loved her no longer. The news of her free- dom bad left him cold, indifferent. The thought of her had power no longer to quicken his pulses. All he feit for her was the contempt she deserved. And, if a calmer, saner love came to him, why should he not bid it wel- come ? If But here he broke off with a bitter laugh. Let him accept the lot that had fallen to him and be content. What right had he to think of this girl? To her he probably appeared old enough to be her father. He rang the bell with an impatient hand for the reading- lamp to be lighted in the surgery. A little hard work would be the best remedy for his foolishness, he told himself grimly. Dorothy Lineal was sitting in the window- seat of her room when the light streamed out from the surgery window. She was sitting in the dark, coiled up in the corner of the window-seat, with her hands about her knees. She had been sitting there, waiting — for what ? She herself had hardly known till the mellow light streamed out upon the dark- ness, bringing with it a sense of glad com- panionship, of safety, of rest-fulness—just what she had felt that afternoon in Doctor Warton's presence. It was with a little impatience that she heard Nancy's knock at the door. She had scarcely seen her that day. Mrs. Reynolds had told her, with many bewailings, that her daughter had refused Mr. Willcox; but J)oi".y ————.——————— "W. had not been greatly impressed by the oetofc She had maae up her mind that the girl was a shallow, frivolous little creature, with Eliza- beth's ambition, but without Elizabeth'# force of character. If she had refused Ifts. Willcox, it was probably because she hoped to do better still when her sister came to Clyde House. "Why, you are quite in the dark!" said Nancy, in a surprised tone. "Mother aid you were writing letters." Dolly sprang from the window-seat and went to her little writing-table as Nanov entered. She was conscious of some em- barrassment. "I was just going to strike a light. I told Mrs. Reynolds I had some letters to write. But I am terribly lazy about letters. They alwavs seem like things one can do to-morrow. I wonder where my matches are? I felt sure they were on this table." "You are too late for the post to-night. And supper is just ready. Mamma sent me to fetch you. Shall I get you matches? But don't light your candles for a moment, p'oase* Let me talk to you." "isn't. supper ready?" Dorothy asked; she did not feel much inclined for a talk. "It doesn't matter. Papa is not in, and mother is deep in a novel. But would rvu rather go down to supper? Are you hun- gry. "Not at all, thank you.' -j (To be Continued). 4!
