THE PEER AND THE WOMAN.
THE PEER AND THE WOMAN. BY E. PHILLIPS OPPENHEIM. CHAPTER iX. A DESPERATE WOMAN. It was midnight, and Lady Aleeston sat in her room, leaning back in a low dicker chair and watching the fitful flames 4lld dull embers of a slowly dying fire. She 'had dismissed her maid an hour ago, and liIince then she had been sitting there motion- less and silent. At first the dancing firelight had played upon her pale, haggard cheeks 411d around her black-robed form, and had darkled in her dry, lustreless eyes; but now the flames had burned themselves out, and flbe sat in the shadow, almost in darkness. It 114d been a terrible hour for her—it was so Itti.Jl. A task from which she shrank with a horror lay before her—inevitable, Yet fiideous. For long she had sat there battling with herself, trying to crush her Naples, her fears, her over-mastering dread, and she had not succeeded. The great house was silent as the grave. lerora outside there came occasionally the *°ise of some passing vehicle, and at regular intervals the stillness of the night was broken "7 the deep, mellow boontlng of Wetstmuigter ( cJock. But inside there was a tranquil r silence. The servants had retired early; Lord Bernard earlier still. Lady Alceston alone kept watch of the night. Midnight had come and passed. The quar- ters had struck three times, and the first hour of morning Waf: nearly over. Then she stirred slightly, and woke from her apathy. A lamp and a newspaper were on a small round table by her sude. She turned the former up, adjusted the shade, and commenced to read. The paper was the "Telegraph," the date the day after the inquest at the- Rising Sun, and the paragraph which she was reading was—the account of that inquest. She knew it almost by heart, but she read it over again slowly, and stopped at one place. Always that one place! She had read it over before and had stopped there each time. There seemed to be a sort of fascination for her in that brief disclosure by the coroner. But it was the fascination of terror. She put the newspaper down and rose slowly to her feet. One o'clock struck whila she stood there hesitating, and the sound of the hour seemed to give her courage. She crossed the room and opened an elaborately- carved massive wardrobe. After a, few moment's inspection she took out a long loose dressing-gown of some dark material, and, hastily divesting herself of her gown, wrapped it around her. Then she exchanged her high-heeled shoes for soft bedroom slippers, which sank noiselessly into the heavy carpet, and, re-crossing the room, took up the lamp. Something of desperation seemed to have stolen into her whita haggard face, as she made these perparatlons, but it was despera- tion mixed with a great, shrinking fear. There was something to be done which seemed to her more awful than any other task which could have been set before her—something I which she would hay given years of her life to have left undone. But there was no escape, no second course. It must be done before morning broke. She knew it, and the knowledge gave her strength. With swift, even footsteps she crossed the floor, holding the lamp over her head, and, softly turning the handle of the I door, left the room. CHAPTER X. IN THE CHAMBER OF DEATH! A careless servant had turned the Venetian blinds the wrung w-ty, and a struggling moonbeam had forced its way into the stately bedchamber. Across the dark crimson carpet it cast long, trembling bars of light, and shone on the stiff, cold sheets of the canopied bed, and on the ghastly face of the man who lay there. But it was a great room, and the poor little moonbeam could do no more than feebly illuminate oKt) very small corner of it The rest Wil wre-pyt/. in a veil of thick darkness. • Silent as the dead Silent as death Com-1 mon phrases enough, but peculiarly expres-! sive. There was death in this room, death and a deep breathless silence. For it was the face of a corpse round which that moon- beam was playing. Skilful hands had ban- daged his throat and laid out his stiff, lifeless limbs, and Lord Alceston. Earl of Aleeston, lay in state, waiting for the morrow, when his body would go to its last resting-place. Hark! A sound at la.st, breaking in upon the solemn stillness. A strange sound, too -the low rustling of a waman's skirts along the broad corridor. At last it ceased just outside the door; then was the stealthily turning of the handle, and a tall black form softly entered. The door was closed again. Again there was silence. She moved towards the bedside but slowly, Long before her dark form had emerged from the shadows the sound of her quick anxious breathing betrayed her whereabouts. At last she glided out of the darkness and stood between the window and the bedside, in the focus of the moonlight. The quivering beams played upon a face set and rigid as marble, ghastly and colourless, yet desperate. It was the face of the Countess of Alceston. She was close to the bedside now, close to the mass of odorous sweet-scented flowers, whose delicate perfume hung heavily about the confined atmosphere—close to that white, rigid form, colourless as the damask sheets- —most awesome, most fear-inspiring of all z, I human sights—the corpse from which the lftot breath has parted, the laet spark of ¿ 1M, died out. Once lips, now colW as clay, had burned against hers. Once those eyes, now closed and dim, had looked fondly into hers, now filled with a soft, gentle lovelight, now full of passion and fire. and she had loved him God! How she loved him! Three times stooping down. until her breath fell hot upon his face, she stretched out her hand, and three times she withdrew it again. ,She turned away with a little moan of despair, like the last cry of a hunted animal. It seemed to her that her task was an im- possible one. She could not touch him. It was sacrilege, desecration. It stirred into revolt all her emotions; she shrank from it as from some deed of shame, and yet -yet it must be done. and now. To-morrow the opportunity would have been gone for ever. To-morow would be too late. Her hand descended again and rested upon his arm. Ah it was there. The hand which she had been holding dropped heavily from her nerveless fingers and fell upon the sheets el p with a little thud. She staggered back against the wall and leaned there, crouching back against it with her hands clasping her throbbing head and her eyes rivetted upon the sheets. Her white lips moved slowly in an half-uttered prayer. Oh. for strength, —a little strength—just to keep her from going mad When she moved again her limbs were stiff and her movements mechanical. Without hesitation she took up again his arm and turned the shirt-sleeve up above the elbow. Tie long white arm with its blue veins lay jf&posed to the moonlijrht. and high up some- ?-- I tbing was glistening and shining in the flood of silvery light. Her fingers closed around it, hiding it from view. For a moment her whole frame shook with excitement, and then a little sob of relief burst from the trembling lips. She withdrew her hand and slipped something into the pocket of her dressing- gown. The long white arm lay there still upon its bed of flowers and perfumed linen. But something had gone—something which had been there when that arm had flourished a dripping sword and waved an eager regi- ment on to victorv-something which had been there when that arm had trembled wi+H the fierce srecticitations of the orator who was compelling the wild tumultuous arvplaupe of an excited senate house—some- fhil1Q' whieh had been there when the nrin which it had ercirc'sd had been pressed hy Royal fingerg. Dangers and sickness, triumphs and dorr, it had seen, aDd when the last breath had emitted the body, and its Kfe had gone out like a snddenlv quenched lamp. it Fad remained. But severance had come at last. Another sound breaking the Iiilrlip4 silence of the sleeping house. Slight though it was, she hoard it, and the blood in her veins ran co\l as ice from head to foot. She trembled, and her shaking knees almost gave way be. neath her. A footstep in the corridor! A light, firm footstep, drawing nearer and nearer. It stopped, -and her heart gave a great throb. She clutched at the wall for support, shrinking back against it with reel- ing senses and with delated eyes fixed upon the door. The handle was softly turned, a tall figure entered. She with the quivering moonlight shining upon her ghostly face con- vulsed with terror, he barely visible, stepping out from the deep shadows. Mother and son stood face to face. (To be continued).
THE GREAT VOLCANO
THE GREAT VOLCANO MAUNA LOA IN MAGNIFICENT ERUP TION AFTER FIFTEEN YEARS. After fifteen years of inaction, the summit crater of the great volcano, Mauna Loa, in the Sandwich Islands, is again in magnificent activity. As might he expected after so long a rest, the new eruption lias appeared in immense force. It first appeared ou April 21, soon after midnight, in the form of a column of brilliant fire projected from the summit, some 4.000 feet aloft, where it fanned out into a vast body of smoke. It was so seen from both Hilo and ICawaihae, each over 40 miles in a direct line. It was seen at the same moment from a steamer leaving Molokai, 150 miles away, as a bright vertical line suddenly appearing a little above the horizon. The bright glow on the clouds above the eruption has since been a conspicuous object, not only at Lahaina, 110 miles, but also on heights near Hono- iulu, 180 miles away. It is estimated that 500,000 cubic feet or 60,000 tons of molten rock are pro- jected out of the earth's interior every second.

WELSH BABY IN PARLIAMENT.
WELSH BABY IN PARLIA- MENT. TAKES A WALK AMONG THE MEMBERS. Our London correspondent telegraphs that the youngest Parliamentarian was seen in the lobby on Tuesday night in the interesting personality of a toddling infant, who had been. brought into the lobby with his parents, and. escaping from parental control, took a littlo exercise among the members, to the hugre delight of many of them. The parents were one of the many parties of excursionists from Wales who were taken round the House on Tuesday. There had been many excursions up from the Principality, and a large number of the trippers found their way to the House.
