'DOROTH Y LINEAL"
'DOROTH Y LINEAL" AlfOTEL. CHAPTER XXII.—(Lontnued). The little clock on'the mantel-shelf chimed the quarter, and then the half-hour. The gong in the hall sounded. It was time to dress for dinner.. Elizabeth rose up stiffly. She put the letter into its envelope, and placed it in the little rack for unanswered letters which hung by the wail. She must answer it on the morrow. Then she took up ner mother's lettsr, read that through, and placed it with the other in the rack. The nurse came in from the nursery to apli if she could help her mistress to dress. It was strange to Elizabeth to hear her speaking to her just as if nothing had happened. When the nurse had gone she went and gazed into the glass. No—she looked much the same. A face cannot grow old and withered in an thour, as a heart may. She could safely go down-stairs. There was a merry party at dinner. The day's sport had been a good one, and the weather promised well for the morrow. In the gay talk that went on around her, Mrs. Lineal's silence passed unnoticed. Only Ber- tram Dease observed her extreme paleness. "But it doesn't make her a bit less hand- some! he thought, as he studied her face admiringly. "How people would rave about t"6 if she went to London. It's the sort of beauty that frightens me though, somenow. If I hadn't seen her with her child this after- noon I should have thought she hadn't much feeling in her." Mr. Dease wanted'to ask her when her step- daughter was likely to arrive, but could not StTinmon up the courage to put the question, though he was sitting close to her. Before the end of dinner, however, Mr. Ward spoke I across the table. I "And when is Dorothy coming, Mrs. Lineal?" he said. "Didn't you have a letter i from her ?" I "I heard from my mother," Elizabeth answered. "She waijts to keep Dorothy for some days longer." "Oh, we can't allow that—can we, mater?" exclaimed Mr. Ward. "We must have our rights. I won't give up a day. I want to 1 see my little Dolly very badly. t "Perhaps she would like to stay a little longer in Fordham," said Mrs. Ward, in her usual gentle tone. "What do you think, Elizabeth t" "I think she would," answered that kdy, quietly. "But I can't be disappointed — it always brings on the gout. You ask Mary," re- monstrated Mr. Ward, in his loud, cheery tone. He looked towards his wife, who shook her head Iaughiqgly as she rose from her seat. When they reached the drawing-room, she came at onim to Elizabeth and sat down be- side her on the sofa, putting her hand caress- ingly upon l#;r shoulder. She was very fond of her. "My dear, 'you mustn't mind what my "guid mon" says Don't you let your girl come a day sooner uban she wants to come. And I have been tirinking—won't it be lonely for your sister when ? she has gone? Do you think she would like to come here with her? We should lie delighted to have her. We can't have t<*> many young people about us." Elizabeth tried to force her stubborn lips into some semblance of a smile. She felt really gratefnl to her hostess—or she would have fe:t so., she told herself, if all feeling had not bean mercifully dead within her. "You are very kind she answered. "My mother saicil to-day that Nancy is not at all well. If you would really like her to come !| "My dear, of course we wish it! I might have thougl rt of it before. In fact, I did think of it days .go. You shall write for me to- morrow anc" insist on her coming. She and Dolly will be capital travelling-companions; and old Beiat-lv is a grim duenna enough even for two such pretty damsels." And then Mrs. Ward moved away to speak to Mr. Dease, who had ju-'»t entered the room with her bus- band and sons. Elizabeth did not try to shorten .the even- ing. Early in her visit Mr. Ward had dis- covered that she was a worthy foe at chess, and a game with her always formed part of his after-dinner programme. Elizabeth played brilliantly that night. Her host had no chance against her. "No—I woat play again, thank you," he said, when she had offered him a chance of retrieving his bad fortune. "You've been studying all day. Now confess, didn't you get that pretty attack of yours prepared this afternoon ?' "I never thought of it till this moment." "Then you are a better chess-player than I thought! I ought to copy down the moves and send them to the 'Chess Magazine.' It was a masterly piece of play." She made no reply. She slowly put the ivory chessmen into the box. She would have liked to play another game. Anything to put off the hours that were coming when she must be alone But Mrs. Ward gave her husband no time to change his mind. She came up to the table, declaring that chess was not an amusement at all, but hard work, and that Elizabeth looked tired out. "Mr. Dease wants to hear some of those quaint, Scotch songs. Are you too tired to play the accompaniments, Bessy, my dear?" No—Bessy was not too tired, she said. She sat down at the piano and nerved herself to listen to the songs she had so often sung in the days that were no more. But the first strain of the plaintive air, the first notes of Fannys fresh voice, broke down her self- control. She got somehow to the end of the first verse, then turned round to the younger sister Maud, who stood just behind her. ?-?.?.?? "Take my place, dear; I can't play to- night." Maud, a quick-witted, .t<M;tfu!gtr!. slipped into Elizabeth's place at once, and Elizabeth got outside the room without making the I scene she dreaded. No one followed her. Mrs. Ward thought she had beard her boy crying. Only Maud had seen how agitated she was. It was not to her room that Elizabeth went. There was a cloak hanging in the hall. She wrapped it round her and went out into the I open air, down the avenue of chestnuts, as far as the entrance-gate. No sound of the I' music reached her there. The air was in- tensely still. In the sky the stars were faintly shining. She rested her arms upon the gate, and gazed steadily before her for a long time. The stillness and the solitude brought back her selt-control. No tears came to her eyes. She went back to the house with a steady I footstep. The singing was over. They were laughing together and saying good-night. She went quickly past the drawing-room and up the stairs. The nurse came out to meet her as she reached th" nursery door. "Would you look at Master Guy, ma'am?" she ? said. I ni afraid he was over- excited by the pony this afternoon. I have been anxious for you to come up." Elizabeth went to the side of the cot. As she stood there her boy woke with a startled cry, which was succeeded by excited sobs when he saw his mother. lie struggled up in his cot, holding out his arms to her. Eliza- beth drew his blaake^ warmly about him and lifted him up in her arms, J "He shall sleep with me to-night, nurse," she said. "Don't stay up; I can easily call you if I want you She carried off her boy. The touch of Tiis little arm about her neck, the warmth of his head upon her breast, brought the first relief to the deep misery that had come upon her on reading John Warton's letter. The child was restless when she first- laid him in her bed, and she took him up again and walked to and fro with him, singing the lullaby ha loved. He sank into a sweet, balmy sleep at last, and she put him back upon the bed, and then knelt down by him, looking at the innocent little rosebud face framed in the curls of which she was so proud. It was then that the tears came, slowly at first, and then in healing abundance. And the cry of her heart was- "Let me have strength tG be just! Let me iiok gTudg-e their happiness! Let me not be hard and bitter, as I was before!' CHAPTER XXIII. It was Doctor Worton who decided the question of Nancy's invitation to Macnamara. He found Mr. Reynolds very unwilling for her to go, and Mrs. Reynolds, who always took her cue from her husband, on the point of writing to refuse their permission. John Warton did not stop to argue the matter with her. Mr. Reynolds was just leaving the house, after speaking a few words to him, and he followed him out on to the steps. '"Reynolds, if you don't let Nancy have a change 6he'U be ill this winter- You remember what I told you a.fter her attack of influenza last year?" 1 Her father turned rather pale. "She isn't going to have influenza aga.in?" "Perhaps not: but, iu her preset't state of health, a bad cold may do mischief that can't be undone. This visit is the very thing for her. I am going up for a day or two at Christ max, if I can get away. I'll bring her back then, if you can't do without her." "What? Have you had an invitation too? And are you going all that way for a couple of days ? Mise Dorothy has a vary ardent lover I" "I had' a very kind letter from Mr. Ward this morning," John said, .in a cooi, matter-of- fact tone. "I sihall stay a week if I can. But there is likely to be a good deal of sick- ness in Fordham this winter. That's one reason why I want Nancy out of harm's reach. She's just in that low state of health which makes people susceptible to any prevailing epidemic." ■ "Reailv, Warton, you talk Iii". a special correspondent—not like a sober doctor!" ex- claimed Mr. Reynolds nervously. "What do you mean by an epidemic? I think we'd all better get out of Fordham, if there's going to be anything of that sort." "Pooh—you needn't be afraid And perhaps I "'Poke too strongly. But e-end. Nancy away. Tftis invitation is the very thing for her." "You'd better tell my wife so, then," re- turned Mr. Reynolds, in a somewhat sulky tone. "I can't stay to speak to her myself. I have an appointment with Courtly, and I'm late for it already." "You see a good deal of him—don't you?" asked the Doctor. "I hear he is generally suc- cessful at games of skill, as well as at garner of chance," he continued, making his toue as indifferent as he could. "I my eel f shouldn't care to play with him for beavv stakes." But Mr. Reynold* refueed to take the hint conveyed In this speecli. J "Oh, we'll play for threepenny^-pieces when you do us the honour of joining us in a game!" h» answered lightly, turning to speak as he reached, the bottom of t'he steps. Dorothy was. waiting on the stairs when Doctor Warton went into the hou.-e. "Yes—she's to go. dear," he said, smiling up at her anxious face. "You run up and tell her, while I speak to Mrs. Reynolds, and then come back to me for a moment. It must be only for a moment. I have to call at I The Beeches before four o'clock." "Could I walk a little way with you?" Dolly asked, shyly. "I must ride. But I shall come in again this evening, my dear, unless you forbid it." A smile was the only answer she gave him as she turned to run upstairs to Nancy's room. "Well, you're to go, Nance." But that young lady received the news very quietly. The delight on Dolly's liappy face was not reflected on here. "I am not sure that I want to RQ, now," she said, wearily. "I have displeased papa quite enough. Perhaps I had better stay at home." Doily felt intensely impatient. How could Nancy, knowing what her father was, care so much whether he was displeased or not? She said nothing, but the girl guessed her thought. "I oan't help it.. You would feel the same if you were his daughter. I d&n't worship him as mamma, does, but he h»s the same power over me. I know lit is eeltL-h. I know he would sacrifice any one of us for his own advantage; but I wajit to please him just as if he were the best father in the world. Dolly told the doctor that she was afraid j Nancy would not go after all. She did no< seiefti to care for the invitation now, though she was so delighted at first. "Oh, yes she will! Reynolds will insist on her going now. I have told him her health requires it. He is really very fond of Lar, you know." (To be continued.) --?-?-?-?
