,"DOROTHY LINEAL"
"DOROTHY LINEAL" A NOVEL. CHAPTER XIV.—(Continued). He was measuring out his nightly dose of brandy as he spoke, and did not look at his wife. He was always very exact in measuring the quantity of spirits he took. He was too careful of himself to be a hard drinker. "But Mrs. Reynolds did not finish Iter sentence, but looked timidly at her hus- band. He raised his light eyebrows. "Now don't be a romantic goose You are too old for that sort of nonsense. And it's very bad taste in this instance." He waited. to be sure that she was sufficiently subdued, and then said, in a less authoritative tone, "It would please me extremely to see Warton taking a fancy to the girl. Elizabeth doesn't (vwifc a big step-daughter hanging about her. They don't hit it otf very well, as I've told you before. And it would make things much mora comfortable all round. So just ask the doctor here as much as possible. She's mak- ing a hero of the fellow already." CHAPTER XV. It was nearly two o'clock in the morning before Mr. Reynolds heard the sound of the carriage wheels for which he was listening. He had sent his wife to bed. "Nincy can tell you all her adventures to- I Borrow, he had a&id, impatiently. "She'll want to stop and chatter for an hour if she finds you down here." The High Street was very silent, and he heard the carriage first when it crossed the bridge. He went to the front door and opened it, and stood on the steps. The lights were still shining in the windows of the Cottage Hospital. Dorothy had not yet returned. But Mr. Reynolds did not glance towards the hospi- tal. He was anxiously pondering the question whether Mr. YTiilcox had summoned up cour- age to propose that evening. A moment or two would decide it. He hoped he had done so. It wouid be satisfactory to have the matter finally settled. As the carriage drew nearer, he went down the steps, to be ready to hand his daughter out. "Welcome back, you dissipated people he exclaimed, gaily, as the horses stopped. "Has she been a good girl, Willcox?" Nancy sprang out, and her father saw with bewilderment that Mr. Willcox was not in the carriage. It was Mrs. Goard who returned his greeting, in a rather sulky word or two as the carriage went quickly on again. "Those were two nurses who were with us, papa," Nancy said, as Mr. Reynolds looked at her for an explanation. "They had heard at the hotel about the accident, and that nurses had been telegraphed for; and Mr. Willcox arranged to stay there and send these two with us." "I see," said Mr. Reynolds, very much relieved. Mrs. Goard s manner had been so unpleasant that he feared there had been a quarrel. "That was very kind of bun, Nancy." "Yes," she returned. She glanced over her shoulder at the hospital, and shivered slightly. "It has been a dreadful accident— hasn't it, papa?" '•Yes—I'm afraid so; but I don't know the details. I never care to talk about horrors of that sort. It is enough that they happen. What was the matter with Mrs. Goard he inquired. "She hardly said good-night to you." They had passed into the dining-room, where the gas was lit and a fire was burn- ing. The girl went up to the fire and took off her cloak. "Has mamma gone to bed? she asked. "She wanted to stay up but I would not let her. Do you know what time it is, child ?" "It's late. I know," she returned. Her father poured out a glass of wine, and I put it down close to her on the chimney- piece. The sight of her face had startled and shocked him. It was strangely pale, like the face of one who has just rillen from a bed of sickness. The hollows above the cheek- bones were strangely sunken, making her blue eyes appear unnaturally large. The lips had lost all their pretty, smiling curves; they looked as if they would never smile again. The smiles for a lonui tiara had baen onlv surface ones, though her father did not know it. The difference was that for the time Nancy had lost all power of hiding her suffer- ing. Her pride was stricken and dead. Mr. Reynolds determined to take no notice of her changed looks. "Come, drink your wine, Nance, and run off to bed. I wouldn't let your mother stay up, for fear you'd never get to bed at all if you began to talk. Jane is upstairs in your i<*csn, with a lire and something hot for you. You're ",?.t' c*il<i, you know!" The y.tutjf girl drank the wine. She felt that withi/'it it she would not have strength to go up to her room. "You murt t-ell us about the play to- morrow. Ellen Terry looked charming, of course? But yv-n shall tell us to-morrow. Miss Lineal has gone to help the nurses at the hospital. She's a plucky little thing—isn't she?" "Is she there now?" "Yes-but I expect your contingent will relieve her. Warton has promised to bring her back. I like a plucky woman. I dare I I say she was dreadfully frightened and upset at the sight of those poor wretches; but, de- pend upon it, she did not show it. She's not a girl to wear her heart upon her sleeve." Nancy looked at her father steadily. "You mean that's what Im doing?' Tins straightforward question took Mr. Reynolds back. He had not intended she should catch up his words like that. "Go to bed, my dear. You're tired out; and that's tuottgh to make aaybody low- spirited. You oughtn't to have gone to the Rectory this afternoon. It was an absurd arrangement." He was secretly growing very uneasy. He would have given much to know what had happened that evening; but he did not ven- ture to put direct question, and Nancy did not enlighten him. He saw her face quiver at the mention of the Rectory; but she did not speak at once. She took up her cloak, and flung it over her arm. "That's right, go to bed, my child." her father said. "When is Willcox coming back? By the first train to-morrow? I don't ex- pect he enjoyed being deprived of his drive home." After all, he could not let her go without saying something more. "Some time to-morrow, I suppose," Nancy said. She had begun to move towards the door, but now she stopped and looked straight at her father. "Be intends to come and see you, papa." A smile of genuine delight broke over Mr. Reynolds's face. "Does he, my dear? Well, what am I to say to him, Nance?' "He asked me to-night to marry him," was the reply. A burning biush covered the girl's face for a moment, and then left it pale as before. "He has every right to do so." "And you referred him to me? Quite the right and proper thing to do, my little girl!" "I refused him- But he would not believe that I meant it." "You refused him* But he was right—you did not mean it!" "He was very angry." She spoke as she had spoken before, as if unconscious of her father's words. "He was right to be angry. I have treated him shamefully! But he would not believe that I was in earnest. And he is coming to see you to-morrow." "It is more than you deserve, Mr. Rey- nolds said, slowly. "You are a lucky girl to be given a second chance And you have thought better of it. and want to call him back again? That's it-isn't it?" Bue he did not wait for her answer. "You little goose, you should have accepted him to-night! Mrs. Goard will never forgive you. I understand 91 her sour looks now. But we will make it all right to-morrow. She stood silent, looking straight at her father, and apparently listening still. Mr. Reynolds felt as if he were speaking to a stone image; for his words seemed to have no effect upon his daughter. "He is coming to see you to-morrow," she said again. "And you must make him under- stand that I was in earnest, papa. I cannot see him again." Mr. Reynolds was standing quite near to his daughter, and he touched her arm with his hand. It was a light enough touch, but she shrank back as if he had struck her. He had struck Elizabeth once, for refusing to tell a convenient falsehood at his bidding. It was years before, when they were little more than children, but the whole scene came back to Nancy in a flash, for he looked at her sister as he was looking at her now, with the same [ evil in his face- 4110., Do you want me to speak plainly to you ?'* he said. "I will. You have gone too far to draw back now. Shall I tell you what people will say if you don't marry him?" He might better have struck her than looked at her as he did. The poor girl's hands were clasped tightly together—so tightly as to be painful. "People can say what they please. I shall not in airy him." (To be Continued).
