?s D 0 ROT H Y LINEAL" A NOVEL. CHAPTER XXIX (Continued.) ^*&ny was glad to be claimed by her Donald. "How can Dorothy put up with that mau ?" 8he said to him, as they climbed the slope. If I ever saw you look half as unhappy Vhen you were walking with me as he has been looking thie afternoon I would break off tN engagement at once J" "Three is a crowd," remarked Donald lehtentiously. "Perhaps he wanted her to Hitoself." Fanny shrugged her shoulders. "Why didn't he take her to himself then?" It would have been easy enough. But he "Was thinking about his book, I suppose. XIIO is writing a great book, she says. Ob, Ift glad you don't want to write a book, Donald!" All promise you never to think of it." aid Donald with sufficient solemnity. But ,bis eyes sparkled as he looked at Fanny. lie would for ever bless Doctor Warton for eoming to Macnamar, if he was going to •"•ie Fanny more content with him. ,ey not linger long on the top of the ridge. It was Tom Ward who sounded the 1irst note of alarm. ^"We shall not be back before the fog us, if we are not ^uick !'• he said suddenly, after looking for a moment at the great bank of white fog away to the west. "It has the wind behind it. We shall have it upon us in half an hour." They hurried down the slope in a body, Tom and Donald insisting on their all keeping together. They knew the danger of fog on that bleak rolling moorland, with its steep ravines and deep dark tarns. Only that autumn a tourist had lost his way in a fog, and had been drowned in one of the tarns. They had talked about it at supper the night before. I They were more than half way down the slope, and Tom had allowed them to slacken their pace. John and Dolly were some dis- I tance in front. Even Fanny had admitted to herself that he showed the proper amount I of anxiety that Dolly should get home without a fog bath. The bridge was in sight, and Dorotihy was laughingly declaring that she might be allowed to loiter a little now—she did not I believe the fog was coming at a.U--when tue Doctor hastily interrupted her. "Did you hear anything, Doll? W&S that a child crying." They stopped and listened, but no sound reached them, excepting the low sighing of the wind in the withered broken. They waited for the others to come up; but none of them had heard a cry. "fc>ome bird," suggested Tom. "Eagles have been seen here at rare intervals; though more probably it was your fancy." "If Tom heard nothing, there was nothing," said Fanny decidedly. "You may trust Tom's ears, Doctor. They are as good as a bushman's." The Doctor did not argue the point; but he trusted his own sense of hearing better than he trusted Tom's. His ears were wonder- fully keen like all his other senses; and he felt absolutely convinced that what he had heard was the cry of a frightened child. When they had crossed the bridge, and were in the road to Maenamar; he let the others go on a little way. "Dorothy, 1 am going down by the brook for a shfuflr distance. I am sure it was a child I heard. It will be in danger if the fog comes. You won't mind going on alone now, will, you?U Dorothy asked him to let her accompany him but he would not allow that. "I shall not be ten minutes; I know exactly where the cry came from." And he hurried back. She did not hasten to overtake the others. The day was bright still, and it was very pleasant to loiter along the quiet road, thinking her happy thoughts. It was a sudden darkening of the clear bright after- glow, that made her quicken her pace. When she looked up she saw that rolling masses of white fog had crossed the ndge of mooèad and were rapidly sweeping down on Macnamar Valley. Nancy came running back round the curve of the road. "Fanny says you are to be quick! But where is Doctor Warton?" Dolly quickly explained. She began to hurry on with Nancy as she spoke. for a raw dampness began to make itself felt in the air. They found the others waiting at the gate; and Tom was somewhat indignant that a Southnon stranger should not have taken his opinion as decisive. "I suppose I had better go after him," he was saying rather sulkily, when they heard the sound of flying footsteps coming up the lane. It was Guy's nurse. She caught Dorothy by the arm. "Oh, Miss Dorothy, Master Guy's lost! I was just talking in the road, and he got away! Will somebody come and look,1 Mrs. Lineal is nigh out of her mind I" "Does she know?" broke simultaneously from Nancy and Dorothy. Donald and Tom had already stepped out upon the roadway, and were looking up anxiously at the fast-darkening sky. "She came to meet me. I was late, and she got anxious. She's out there searching and searching. She sent me back for help. Oh dear, I'm thinking he's tumbled in the brook." And she burst into helpless tears. "We must go back at once!" exclaimed Dorothy, But even as she spoke the fog was upon them. The next monieut they were enveloped in it. Tom stepped back to the girls. He was grave enough now; and so was Donald. "You can do no good, he said, authori- tatively. "Go back to the house. Tell father, we shall Search down by the burn- side. Be quick, there is no time to lose! Thank Heaven Warton turned back when he did! It must lhave been the little lad's crying that be heard." No second cry guided John Warton as he hurried back. He crossed the bridge again, and searched along the bank, without seeing or hearing anything. Some distance downj there was a second bridge, a rough construc- tion of unhewn logs. He had just reached this bridge, and was hesitating as to whether he should cross it or uot, when lie heard the faint cry again. It came from above, out of the thick fast-advancing cloud of mist that hid the moorland from him. He dashed upwaids, guided by the now continuous sob- bing, and a few rapid steps brought him close to the frightened child, who was hurry- ing down the s:ope as fast as his little feet could jcarry him. John caught him up and held him closely. He dared Dot thins what might have happened if he had not been there. For the bum ran swift and dark below. He did not realise at first whose child he had saved. It was not till Gny cried out "Muvver, muvver —Guy wants muvrer!" that he knew. The WVWAdge brought with it a thrilling ?. sense of delight; for, unworthy though he thought her, he loved Elizabeth still. It was the very consciousness of that love that had made him so cruel to her that morning. But in that moment, as he clasped her child in his arms, he remembered only that he loved her, and had rescued her treasure for Her. The child nestled down confidingly in his strong arms and the frightened sobs grew less frequent, and ithen ceased altogether. He had fallen asleep. John wrapped him closely in the cape he wore, and began to make his way cautiously along the side of the hill. He dared not attempt to descend the slope. The mist was thick and blinding; and the descent towards the deep burn was a steep and treacherous one. He had lost all idea of the position of the bridge, and trusted to chance to lead him in the right direction. After some time however he began to fear he was going away from the bridge instead of towards it. The sound of the burn became fainter, the side of the hill steeper and more rocky. He stopped and listened. The burn was decidedly farther off; the thickening of the fog did not wholly account for its fainter ripple. "What are we to do, little man?" he said. speaking aloud to the sleeping child. "Retrace our steps, I suppose. We are getting into danger." For he remembered Tom Ward saying that the western side of the moor wag full of pitfalls. He stopped for a moment, trying to pene. trate with his eyes tne dense blinding mist before him; and, as if in response to his desire, the fog-cloud. began to roll and curl upward, leaving for a moment a clearer space between it and the ground; and he saw the shoulder of the hill outlined against a background of yellow sky, and the tail figure of a woman springing up the rocky incline with mad, desperate haste. It was but for a moment however that the cloud was lifted, then it descended again thicker and more blinding than before. But John Warton had seen enough. His heart tofd him who it was that was searching so wildly along the hillside. He pressed on hastily, forward and upward, shouting with all the strength of his powerful voice. it seemed a long time before he heard an answer to his shout. But it came at last. and came again more clearly as he made his way with difficulty through the mist. Once he slipped and fell, shuddering to find him- self prone on the bank of a deep ravine. But for that providential slip he would jave gone headlong downwards. After that be made his way more cautiously, repeating his shouts at intervals of only a few yards. Suddenly there loomed close to him the outlines of a rough shed, used by shepherds in the summer time, and there Elizabeth stood, with hands upraised and panting for breath.' He had tried by his shouts to make her understand that her boy was safe, but lib" had not dared to believe it. He curie swiftly to her, and placed her <hiJd in her arms. "lie's safe and well. Not a aair of his head is hurt," he said to her. She caught the boy in her arms, clasping him to her bosom in an agony of joy that had no words. But t.be next moment she would have fallen if John Warton had not flung his arm around her. X ou are faint—worn out," he said. "Lean on me. Don't try to stand alone." She did not resist. She let his strong arm enfold her, leaning passively against him. At that moment she had 110 thought except for her uhild, her treasure, her lost one brought back to her in her hour of despair. When j-he did think of John it was to remember that he had saved her bcv. After a whLe see drew herself away from him, and he let her go. The temptation to hold her still more closely to him, to force from her some recognition of the passion that thrilled him from head to foot, was a mighty one, but he bravely resisted it. "How can I thank vou?" she began. But the faltering words were roughly inte-iuptcd. "I want no thanks. Anybody couid hare done it. We had better consider how we are to get home. Do ycu think you could walk now ?" He had checked the warm How of her gratitude, as he had meant to check it. "Do you know where we Are?" sh* asked, moving a step or two away from him and peering into the mist. 1 have no idea at all of our position. Do you know?" I am not cer^in. What do think we ought to do?" ought to do t" He did not answer her at once. He want nearer to the shed behind them and examimd it. lhere is a sort of seat here. You maf" rest for a time. They will be out in searcK■/ of us sooner or later and you can't walk ? you have rested. You are trembling 811.;1 over as it is. Come and sit down here." He went back to her, and would havtf.: taken the child; but she held him tightly^ "No—I can't give him up I can be flsivl I have him only while I hold him here." 3 She sat down upon the plank seat; and tlllfM doctor stood near her, leaning against tiwl rough woodwork that formed the sides of th*v-; shed. He could just see the vague outline of her figure as she bent over the sleeping child, listening to his breathing, passing har^ hand over his little face and limbs to asssiv^ herself that he was altogether uninjured. '» The child slept soundly. After one drowsy ■ delighted murmur of "Muvver," as Elizabeth took him in her arms, his eyes had closed • again, and he knew nothing of the passionate caresses that were lavished upon hinu.j Though John had roughly checked her ex-* pression of gratitude, it stung him with ? keen, unreasonable pain that she should be *0^ absorbed in her boy. j (Tc be continued.) ———: is
