OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY WHAT HAPPENED. Aunt Patty awoke early with the bright Ipril morning, feeling sure something vsm go-ing to happen. She had heard High Top Calvin; the king of the flook, crow nine timea at midnight; and Lympathy Limp, the lame white pullet, was cackling before sunrise. As the moments passed, and Aunt Patty began putting on the garments that lay no smooth and orderly on the high-backed chair, Ahs felt guxer and surer her convictions would come true. She put one stocking on wrong aide out, the right shoe on the left foot, and skipped three holes in lacing her stays. She tried twice to put both arms into one sleeve Af her dress, and buttoned it by leaving two holes at the top with no buttons, and iwo buttons at the bottom with no holes. She oould still her reasoning no longer, but said, aloud; "Patty Prentice, axe you a fool?" Just as she had got the refractory buttons into place, there camo a prolonged knock at the little porch door below. "Oh, dear me Ae said, "what's coming now? Somebody tttust be dead." Her thoughts and tongue ran 8wjftly as she tried to untie the nightcap "brings, that in her hurry had got into a hard knot. "P'r'aps it's Deacon Hopkins's wife. Belinda Johnson said last night the doctor *lid 4ba couldn't pull through; or maybe it's. Martha James's husband's mother;' she's awfully feeble. Or, what if it should b4 Joe Backus's boy, Jim? He always throws a stone at Sancho every time he passes here. (Sancho is her dear, companionable cat.) They say Jim's likely to get kidled any time." Aunt Patty had conquered the strings, and hung the cap on the bedpost. She started down the narrow stairs, still thinking of Sancho's persecutor, and repeating: "The Lord gave, and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the Name of the Lord." She crossed the little, low kitchen, and, reaching the porch, moved aside from the door the long wood-box, with its pile of tin pans. Aunt Patty had not the protection of a man in the house, "but tin pans could make as much noise as a man, any time," she said, "and perhaps were as good in protecting." She slid back the little bolt, and turned the wooden button, asking, in an anxious voice: "What is it? What is it?" "Mover wonts you to come right over, Aunt Patty," a childish voice says "She's got unspected company. Don't stop to get any bwe&kfaet. I ain't had none, never." "Unspeotcd company, unspected company," repeats Aunt Patty. "1 wonder if the day will ever corn" when I am not at the beok and oaK of everybody's tuutoected company and the piled-up mending basket." But she reaches down, smooths the tangled hair, and kindly says: 'Well, you oome in, Johnnie, and you can eait eome doughnuts while rm getting ready." Her doughnuts are known to every child in the village; they axe & generous kind, or, as -the children say, "not all hole:" It is a bright gleam of sunshine in her lonely life that children love her, and many childish sorrows and wrongs are soothed by her ready sympathy and the conten. of the never- empty tin box in the little square cupboard. Aunt Patty is soon ready, for she is not a precise old maid who must leave everything at an exact angle. She often says: "There are old maids from choice, and old maids from compulsion, and I am sort of betwixt and between." But many of the village people remember the lover of Aunt Patty's girlhood, and often over the teacups has the prediction been given: "They'll both get tired of living alone, and make it all up. You see if they don't 1" Johnnie feeds the hens, while Aunt Patty puts Sancho's breakfast under the doorstep, with the always added admonition: "Now, Sancho, if you see Jim Backus coming, yon run right under the hen-house." She closes tht, gate, and stops to look at the lilac bush, and thinks of the purple plumes so closely hidden in those bright green buds. "How kind Kaitura io to all Hfe entrusted to its care," she says, aloud, "and it never makes a mih-" ske." She thinks how sweetly the fetrda m/tgi xtti hcv much of life there is in this bright spring morning. She finds herself softly singing: "It it were always May, sweetheart, If it were always May." She stops suddenly, remembering the weight of nearly 50 years. But she cannot: close her eyes to thl swelling buds and sweet awaken- ing that shows at every step along the road- side, They cross the narrow bridge, and Johnnie, growing impatient, runs ahead and calls: "Let's hurry now, Aunt Patty, for mover is waitin' She follows Johnnie into the house, through the long entry, and stops just at the sitting- room door, to leave her bonnet and shawl. She hears the child's voice: "I didn't tell, I didn't tell. Now, Uncle John, div me the candy." Mrs. Hastings meets her at the door, and says, in a glad voice "Uncle John has come back, Aunt Patty, and we want you here for a good long day." She hears another voice speak her name, she feels a warm hand take hers, and like -one fn a sleep she enters the room. She hears the questions and replies, but all sound far away—only Johnnie's happy voice seems real. "You ain't got to do noffin to-day, Aunt Patty; not sew, nor mend, nor noffin. Mover said so—didn't she, Uncle John?" "Unless she will mend a broken life," he slowly answers. "I dess she can," says Johnnie, "for my wocking hoss dot his tadl bowked off, and she stuokt it on jiat as good as ever." Aunt Patty takes the mending basket, thankful for once to busy herself with its con- tents. So the quiet spring day goes on. Neigh- bours drop in to see the wanderer. Talk of travels, Western life, and many changing scenes she hears, but her own heart is tread- ing the path that thirty years have made. Many pictures were dim and almost forgotten, but to-day the fires of memory are all lighted, and every image is shown in truthful outline. The hasty words, the parting, the waiting, and uncertainty, and then the lonely years. The sunbeams have just failed to enter the west window as Aunt Patty folds the last gar- ment, and puts the needles and thimble into the bag. She speaks of gancho and the hens needing their supper, and hurriedly puts on the bonnet and shawl. A tall form waits at the door, and together they walk down the path, cross the narrow bridge, and along the country road. They talk but littJe. Each heart is asking and answering its own questions. They enter tha yard: she closes the low gate, and, turning to the road, they stand and look at the pic- ture. There is the fresh green meadow below, with the winding river, the blue hill. beyond, and all softened with the lights of the spring sunset; She sees it all to-night with a girl's clear eyes of years ago. He speaks her name; she turns, to see him standing with head bowed and hands clasped. "Patty," he says, "Patty, will you repeat the words you said here at the gate thirty years ago: 'You Me all to blame, John Hastings. I will never marry you,' and leave the 'never' out?" Her face shows a startled look that changes to a tender smile, and softly she answered: "I will leave the 'never' out. And that is

.---NORTH WAXES QUARRIES.
NORTH WAXES QUARRIES. ACTION BY THE BOARD OF TRADE. A special correspondent of the "Herald Cymraeg" had an Monday an interview with the officials at the Labour Department of the Board of Trade on the question of the delay in bringing together the parties concerned in the quarry dispute at Bethesda, by which 3,000 men have been out of employment for three months. The Board of ^rade emphati- cally disclaim, on their part, any responsi- bility for the delay which has taken place. It was pointed out to them that a fortnight has now elapsed since the men, at the request of the Board oc Trade, appointed a special deputation to meet Lord Penrhvn to discuss in the presence oi representatives of the Board of Trade the basis of a possible settlement of the dispute, but that since then, apparently, nothing further had ltten done. In reply to this, it was stated that the Board of Trade had, under the provisions of the Conciliation Act of 1896. written both to Lord Penrhvn and to Mr. Daniel, the organising secretary of the Quarrymen's Union, with a view to arriving at an amicable settlement. The Board of Trade, however, declined to furnish a copy of the communication, which had been sent in duplicate to both parties. Lord Penrbyn has. through n:, chief agent, Mr. Young, already declared that lie is not re- sponsiMe for the åe'ay. On Monday evening a special Kectipjr of the men's deputation and committee ■* -.s hastily mmr 0000 at Bethesda. The comavvmt' *> frpae ..h., Board of Trade was under ■fr'wwion, and steps were taken to meert 4>° requirements of that body, and to bring the aogefcia+ions to some definite end- mg withc*fc lurtker delay. It is now antici- pated that U2Jc**s so-Tie unforeseen difficulties should arise, or Lor/1 Penrhyn prove un- traceable, the quarry will be re- pened and -the whol » of the men again at work the first week in the New Year.
PANOPTICON CARDIFF.
PANOPTICON CARDIFF. SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS. The arrangements made by Mr. fttoll at the Panopticon for the coming Christmas season are of the moat complete character. Trw in- terior fittings of the large Philharmonic-hall have been taken down, and the hall itseli has been thrown entirely open, all the seats with the exception of those on the balcony and gaalery having been removed. Round the hall little kiosks have been fitted up, m which the various attractions—the clock-e>vrf lady, Broadhurs-t, the man with the marvel- lous beard, the magnetic lady, &e.—hold their receptions. Upon the old stage a roundabout has been fitted, and an entirely new stage for the various performances had been erected. Suspended from the roof are large electric arc- lights, whilst garlands of variega.ted electrio nicaaideeoent lights are suspended, not only from the ceiling, but aJso from every other point from which it ifl possible to hang them. Thp cffect is a most brilliant ooie, and the expense of this portion only of the innovations is very large, over 1,000 electrio lamps ard six miles of cable being required. The stage i perrorm:moes, which ar* to be the pri-ioipa.1 features during the season, are of a superior eiatig, and include the famous Ashley team of comic skaters Hanvarr, the marvellous manipu- lator of clubs; Susanna Sch.affar, the wonderfully clever equilibrist: Erekine, a very clever car- toonist; George Arvey, who giT«s an extraor- dinary jug-fling performance; the gymnastic mcnkeyB of Don Everest; and he Ouaglieni Troupe of acrobats in their exceedingly clever performance. The attractions the kiosks, too, should on no account be missed. Then, again, there are in the main hall the phono- graph, the rolling tub, end the Trilby cottages. The ourio halle of the Panopticon will also prove ae attractive as ever. Aldridge's great picture of the Tichborne trial, which the Tichborne Claimant in pereon describee, wiU be found in this section. M. and Madame Kivira, the phrenologists, will give their delineations of character vith their usual accuracy. The crystal maze, the shooting jungle, Galatea, and the waxworks are further art tractions, and yet, again, thtre is the organ, which plays lively musio at intervals, 88 well as the orchestra oi skilled musicians. On Christmas Eve the first 35Q children entering the hall will be presented with toys taken from the monsrtor Christmas troe, which occupies a prominent position. The ex- pense Mr.ytoll has gone to in pr Jvidiii;' this treat is enormous, and his indefatigable manager (Mr. Tetlow) and his staff have been busy for. weeks past.
