----OUR S H 0 .R T STORY
OUR S H 0 .R T STORY FOR HIS BROTHER'S SAKE. Fortune distributed her favours pretty evenly so regarded the brothers Challing-wood. I Sydaey, the yoanger, was handsome, clever, I pBPUla.r. and poor. It was the ambition of hid life to be an artist; he had drawn pictures from the time he could first hold a pencil. But his father told him fiercely no Challingwood had ynt disgraced the good old name by being a pennileat dauber. "Give up an that rubbish, and I will make y,mi a partner in the firm," he eaid—the well- lewmrn firm of Ohallingwood and Co., silk mer- chants. This was no mean ofter for a young fellow not yet twenty-two, but Sydney refused ifc "I'm not out out for that sort of life, sir," he aid witth a determined look on his handsome, boyish face. "Let me follow my own bent, fmther, and I promise that you shall be proud of m some day." "Then, follow it," shouted the old man, in a Mge, pointing to the door. "Go, and you shall never get one penny-piece from me!" So Sydney went. He packed up his few be- longings and started for London-that haven of Ae destitute. There he starved in a garret, and sketched for penny papers, finding the road to success very hard to traverse. It was well-known that under these circum- sfcanoee Paul, the elder son, would inherit ail his father's vast wealth. Paul wa.s little o-n-I <teiioate; he bad a crooked spine, and could only walk with the aid of crutches. Old Ohalling-wood^ was bitterly disappointed in his first-born, nor did he scruple to hide the fact. But Sydney had made up in a great measure for his brother's deficiency. Until the time when their wills unfortunately clashed, he waa the pride of his father's heart, upon whom all his hopes were centred1. It may be easily understood that Paul's life was not exactly a bed of roses. The one bit of sunshine in his existence was Sydney; but now he had gone! The brothets corresponded occasionally, though their father did not suspect this. Had he not forbidden Paul to hold any com- mundoation with Sydney, the sinner? It was not like him to disobey; he was greatly in awe of the stern, tyrannical old man. At first Sydney's letters were bright and hopeful; but, by-and-bye, reading between the lines, Paul knew that he was disappointed and unhappy. "I shall tiever be anything but a pen-wiper 1 all my Jife," he wrote once. "What can a fellow do without money? It is not con- ducive to genius or good work to know that one sketch means so much bread and cheese, and another a ntw pair of boots. One must soar above such sordid details if one would make a name. I. is beastly hard lines, Paul, old chap; yet i would rather be doing this thaa over-hauling bales of silk. Ydii nam, tdll nis Royal Highness so, if you like, with my best disrespects." However, Paul held his tongue on the subject. But the outcome of Sydney's letter was that his pockets were kept as well supplied as Paul's tcould afford. He little guessed the sacrifices to which his brother was put on his account. "But, then," as he would have said in his cheery way, "what could a poor, sickly little fellow like Paul want with money? Give him a few fossils to look at, or a micro- scope, and he would be perfectly content. But it is different with me." And Sydney's "me" was always pronounced in capital letters, for, despite his charming manner and generous ways, he was both conceited and selfish. Still, Paul saw no flaw in his idol; to him Sydney, with his superabundance of animal health and spirits, was the beau-ideal of manliness. Once he boldly approached his father on the subject of Sydney's exile. But old Challingwood worked himself into such a rage that he grew black in the face, and swore that if Paul dared to say another word he would kick him out of the house once for all. I "If the fool chooses to come to his senses, he can," declared the old man. "But until he does I refuse to see him, nor Shall he have a farthing of my money." Paul knew very well that "coming to his senses," so far as giving up his artist life was concerned, Sydney would never do. No, if it depended upon that, father and son would live a.nd die at enmity. If Sydney were the only on it might be different. Paul knew well that old Challingwood, rather than leave his money for the benefit of any distant relations or a dog's home, would curb his pride and seek a reconciliation. A Sydney hinted as much in a letter once. "You tee, old fellow," he said, "the governor rejoices and feels strong in the knowledge that he has got you to inherit his cash. And you may bet that he will fasten it up pretty securely so that I cannot benefit by it in any way. You will probably out-live us both—'a creak- ing gate hangs long'—and God knows I hope it will be sol I don't know what I should do without you, my dear old chum. After all, perhaps this may prove the making of me, even from an artistic point of view. But I should awfully have liked to sttidy in Rome. As it is I can only make my way by dint of hard work—the most praiseworthy, you will say- without money, amd without influence." It seemed strange and unnatural to Paul that the luzury-loving Sydney, with the artist's soul. should be wearing his life away in a wretched garret, while lbe, whose wants were so few, should have all that his brother lacked. "It isn't fair," said Paul, talking aloud to himself, as was often his way. He scarcely ever had anyone else to talk to. "My dear, bonny boy' He has the making of a grand man in him—and a famous one. When our little mother died, Syd, she made me promise to watch over you, and be good to you. As if a poor, helpless fellow like me could be of any use Paul almost laughed at the thought. recalling Sydney's straight, strong figure, by which he seemed such a pigmy. "But the time has come now for me to keep my word, and, God helping me, I will!" It all seemed quite clear and plain before him row. He wondered why he had never thought of it before. Why should he, an eneumberer of the ground, with his deformity and his weak- ness, stand in the way of Sydney—Sydney, the beautiful, the genius, who might have such a brilliant career before him? Thf crdirole sat still, with the letter in his hand and a rapt look on his face. "You will never understand why I did it, Syd, my dear, dear old chum!" he said softly. "I wonder if I shall know how you are getting on? If I shall ever see you again, dear, bonny boy—not face to face, but 'looking down at you from the Strange Somewhere!" Paul often suffered excruciating pain in his back, and could not sleep at night. With the doctor's permission he resorted to sleeping draughts at such times, which were the only things to give him relief. What more simple than that he should accidentally take an over- dose, and thus afford another instance of the carelessness of people who take laudanum to help them to sleep? Paul's face had never looked so nearly hand- some as when he lav white and still in death's cold sleep. The poor, mis-shapen form was hidden from view, and the little lines and wrinkles on his thin face were smoothed away. Over his death-bed Sydney and the old father met again, and all past grievances were for- gotten and forgiven. To-day Sydney is a famous artist—you would recognise his name instantly if I mentioned it, for the name I have chosen is not his real one. Paul's memory is still cherished in his heart, but neither he nor anyone else knows of what Paul did for his brother's sake.

ENGLISH EXPLORERS IN CENTRAL…
ENGLISH EXPLORERS IN CENTRAL ASIA. FROM CASHMERE TO PEKING. Catptain Welby, 18th Hussars, and Lieut-e- nant Malcolm, Argyll and Sutherland High- landers, arrived in Calcutta on Monday from Thibet and China. The Calcutta correspon- dent iof the "Times" gives the following brief account of their journey:—They left Leh (Cashmere) for Thibet on May 4, their caravan consisting of 39 animals with eleven attendants, and reached Shusal, at the south end of Pan- gong Lake, without incident. Thence they struck to the East across the Na Pu Pass, but were stopped on May 26 by Thibetians from the Rudok post, where there is a fairly large gar- rison. Finding it impossible to proceed, the travellers re-crossed the Na Pu and went north for a time, tbut again tunned eastward, thus following a more northerly route than that taken by Caiptain Bower a few years ago. Thev reached Tsaidam on September 21 and crossed the Chinese frontier at Tankar on October 15, meeting the missionary Rijuhart there. They had only three animals and Sour men left on #ieir arrival at Tsaidam, but they succeeded in hiring ponies to carry them on. Most of their men had deserted during the long and toilsome journey. Peking was reached on November 27, the journey across China being made easy by their possessing passports.
