??--OUR SHORT STORY_
??- OUR SHORT STORY THE FATAL DOSE. "I Aall be thankful when the voyage h over Eddie. It makes my blood boil to see the way Adamson trea-ts that unfortunate lad, and yet it only aggravates matters if I attempt to interfere." "Ob, I can quite beMeve that Adamson is hardly the sort of chap to brook interferance in any shape or form. It's rough oil poor Monty though to be blessed with such 9 bear for an unole and paidian. a plucky beggax for all he's eo weakly and delicate." "I wither fancy that latter faot is his sole recommendation in his uncle's eyes. Monty, go he informed me tfke other day, is the only obstacle between him and a. mug little estate ib the South of England." Frank Eddis, first mate oa board the sailing ahip Adrkia, gave vent to a low whistle of oomprehenaiOZl. "Qweer eort of confidence to impart, Curnor. I should have thought that whatever his feel- ings were on the subject he would have kept own counsel. "So bo doubtless fully intended to do, but when a man purta down M many brandie* and 80dae as Adamson, keeping one's own counsel is no such oasv thing. I "A dheerful companion for a long 8ea voyage! You muet rue the day that made you take passage in the Adrina, simply beeanse I—your old friend—happened to be aboard her. ibus of course I %!td no idea. when I made the sug- gestion who your fellow paesengers would tuvn out to be, and th:a Adamson Hullo! talk of the devil and he appears. Come out of hia way." The two sauntered off and a big-framed, sajiidy-haired man c-ame stumbling up the com- panion. He seemed to have some difficulty in kmpiiig his footing, though the vessel was going along steadily enough. "Vlhat d'ye make of the weather, Mr. Eddis?" he shouted, as he caught sight of the fast retreating figures of the two men. What a que3tion to fjek on such 4 day," Ctrnor whispered, as Eddis turned to answer ihe new oomer. Sureiv this cloudlese sky speaks for itself, and as for the sea., it looks more like liquid blue glaes than anything else, though there is c. bit of a swell on. Well, Mcnty, my boy, this our, ought to put a tinge of colour in your cheeks if anything would." The last remark Was addressed to a frail, looking, dark-haired 100 who had come quiet1 y to has side. I wish it would, Mr. Cumor," the boy aid esraeouy. "I hate to be 90 pale and puny. A pretty-faced weakling, ur.ole, called me just now," he muttered between his teeth. Cumor pretended not to have heard the words. I Come and bsve a look through my glass," he said, Daannjr his ana through the lad's and leading; him to the side. It eeetms long time since we sighted a ship; try if you can see one anywhere about." "Oh' What's that huge black log in the water?" the boy suddenly exclaimed, as lie stood leaning on the rail. Curnor peered further over. A fhark. by aN the powers! he cried. Ah! and the men have found him out, too." as an unwonted stir began on deck. "What a horrid looking creature, and how awfully close he is coming to us," Monty said, curiously scanning the brute's hideous shoval nose and hump-like fin. You'll see some sport before long," esiied Eddis, hurrying past. We're going to hook him. He's P, fine fellow; over eleven feet if he's an inch. But wait till he gets a sniff of the beef, then you'll see him to perfection. In a few minutes a big shark-hook was baited, hitched to a coil of stout line, and splash it went overboard. With a sweep of his tail the creature turned over, seized the tempting bait, and was making off with it when the rop^,tautened from above and stopped his progie.se, much to his evident disgust. Then a hard-fought battle began between the men above and the brute below. Furiously he re- sisted all endeavours to hoist him up, lashing the water till it foamed like a frothing sheet around him, diving with such tremendous force that the men hauling ,em to the line had much ado to keep their foct; then moving has black snout again, to the surface as if in amazement at fcaing unable to get free. Presently a huge dog, the captain's special pnide, was seen to spring on the taffrail. Quiver- ing with excitement he gathered himself to- t t%htw, and before he could be stopped cleared at a bound and mad8 for the shark. "Get a boat over, save the dog if you can," shouted Captain Haines. "Oh! poor, poor Baron, that beast will kill him," shrieked Monty, struggling to free him- self from Curnor's detaining \and. "Let me go in the boat, I C3¡tl row, really I can, and Baron knows my voice; he will often come to me when he won't obey anyone else. Ob! do let me go." Bnt it was too late for the boat. With a tremendous jerk the shark got away, hook and all; then darted forward to where the dog was swimming in hot pursuit—Baron had stopped for a moment in obedience to his mas- ter's frantic whistling, but the game had proved too tempting—the black fin rlisappeared the belly glistened as it came uppermost; there was a terrified, agonised howl, then shark and dog disappeared amid the blood-stained foam. The lad stood white and trembling, straining to eee if any thing could be done to save his favourite. "It's no use; that brute has finished him up. But be had no time to suffer much. that's one good thing," Cumor said, laying & kindly hand on the youngster's shoulder- "Perhaps you'd have liked to change plaires, my dear nephew?" Adamson said sneeringiy, hearing the words as he came up to them. The boy flushed. "I would have dearly liked to save poor Baron if I could. We were very fond of each other," he answered quickly "A boy wouldn't have stood more chance thian that dog, if he had happened to tumble overboard," Cumor heard Adamson mutter to himself. "What an easy way to get rid of an encumbrance." Something in the glitter of his eyes, in the wild expression of has face gave his fellow pas- aenger an uneasy feeling that the man wut not r wholly responsible for his actions. True, the doctor, when questioned: a few days ago on the subject, had replied, with a shrug of the shoulders, that there was nothing worse the matter with Mr. Adamson than an undue ten- dency to indulge too freely In wine and spirits. But the doctor wa<? an inexperienced young fel- low, in whose judgment Cumor had not much faith. At any rate he determined not to leave Monty more alone with his forbidding relative than oould be helped. The day after the sacrifice of poor Baror came an unpleasant change in the weather. The sky looked like ink, a tierce gale of wind sprang up, and the heavy seas set the vessel rolling and plunging, till at times it seemed impossible for her ever to right her- self again. Added to this the air was fright- fully hot, the gale being like a sirocco for tem- perature Down below, wiih the skylight closed <anid the companion shut to prevent the vater from washing down, the atmosphere was something frightful. Towa.rds the end cf the second dav the wind dropped considerably, and Curr.or, who had remained faithful to his self-imposed task of watching over Monty, struggled 011 deck for a, mouthful of air. Adam- son had gone some time since to his cabin, to try snd geb Rome rest he t-aid, as he had slept badly the night before; Monty, overcome with the heat, had fallen asleep in the saloon. It was a relief to feel the air blowing around him after the stuffiness of the cabin. and, lighting his pipe, Curnor sought about for a fairly shel- tered spot '.vherc lie could enjoy his smoke in pcace, without fear of a sousing from the spray which dashed over the vessel as she plunged through the heavy sea?. Presently, he saw Monty's head appear above the companion, and in another minute the lad staggered up, closely *r**»wed by Adamson. The men were busy altering sail, eo that part of the ship was prac- tically deserted. Curnor 6aw Monty look eagerly rourd as if in search of someone, and noticed that he was then ashen pale. "Poor little chap, I must not leave him .alone w-.th that brute, so good-bye to my peaceful smoke." he thought, regretfully "Good God! what are t'hey doing? The boy will be over- board if i"- leais over like that. He sprang to his feet, and hurried towards the spot where the two figures were struggling together. Adamson seemed trying to hoist the lad over the side; Monty clinging desperately to the rail, and reiskting with adl his might his uncle's endeavours to make him loose hold. Ae if maddened by Curnor's warning shout, he tore the boy's hands from their clinging grasp; but at that moment the Adrina dipped heavily, he lost his balance on the slippery deck, struck out wildly, and went rolling like a barrel against the 'bulwarks. Scrambling up with an oath, he shook hie n-.ii, at the boy, sheered towards the companion, and disappeared below. Monty clung trembling to his preserver's arm. "Oh! Mr. Curnor, don't leayJ me," he panted. Unole tried to kill me in the saloon. I woko up with his fingers gripping my throat. The shin rolled no he was flung on one side, and I managed to scramble up here; but you saw what he was trying to do." Cumor went in search of Cajptain Hainee, who was below. He met him hurrying from his own cabin. "Such an awful thing has happened,he ex- claimed. before the other could speak. "Adam- son has taken poisun by mistake. He's dying in agony: nothing can save him." "What was it? He was on deck a short time ago," gasped the other in bewilderment. "Then W88 a etronx solution of carbolic acid I for disinfecting purposes in brandy bottle in hit cabin. He evidently forgot it was not brandy, and being I fear in a state of intoxica- tion drank freely of it before he found out nis mistake." Curnor turned away with a shudder. Nemesis had choeen an awful form in which to claim her due.
