OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY ON THE VEBGE. tie wae tdl, hancteome, and manly. She was the kind of wornan of whom poets sing. And when they stood together in her parlour on that December evening the fire that blued before them in the hraes-barred grate burnt not more hotly then the flame wifchin their hearte- "Do you remember the first time we met-at Mrs. was saying. Well. I have loved you from that night. When I found that fate was against us-thaj WW five years ago, you know-I went away. I bought the pain that was always with me would be allayed by new scenes and unfamiliar faces, 110 I left America-" "You should have stayed here," she said quietly, her face very white, and her eyes still fixed upon the burning ooale. "It would have been better for both of us, I think, if you had been a little more patient, and—and a little braver "Yes, I know," he interrupted. "I have thought of thsvt a thousand times, and have oureed myself for my hot-headedne»s, but lone of us cam read the future, you know, Helen. I feel now that if I had etayed here you would have been my wife, instead of his. But let us not talk of what might have been-God knows what is is bad enough! "When I first heard in Paris from Arthur Braiasbee how you were suffering here it 6bnod drove me mad. I oainnot tell you how "MMMMe I became. And at last I •■nita stand it no looser. I took ship nearly two months ago and came back here 10 see for myself if these foul reports were true." The woman glancedi qV at him quickly, with a little frightened look in her luminous blue eyes, and then as quickly turned her gaze baok to the fire. He was silent for a moment, and then con- tinued in a voioe that broke oocasi it'ttUy from sheer depth of feeling:- "I found-God Aelp you, little one -—that everything was just as the tongue of rumour tad .poken it. I found you neglected—>es, deserted—and another womam jcoupyinjc '.he affeotione of the creature whc had sworn to love and honour and protect you, and you only." "I found," he continued in a higher key, "that you had been spurned and cast off by this brute; and that those people who did not pity you laughed at you!" "Oh, God!" she murmured, covering her face with her hands, "that I should ever live to know it!" A great pity urged him to go to her side and take her in his arms, and caress her into happiness, as one soothes a frightened child. But he restrained himself, and stood waiting for her to speak. She did go, finally saying: "Oh, it is oil so miseiraible, Jack—so mise- rable You do not know what I have suffered1 -the neglect, the insults, the abasement of pride. No one can ever know! But there is no help for it I What has been done oan- not be undone. It is my portion, I suppose. They say everyone has tonne cross to bear, and this is mine—only it is so heavy, Jock"—and she fell to weeping softly. He stepped over to her side And grasped her arms with a firmness that brought her to look at him. No, it shall not be your cross," he said, almost fiercely. "You are mine—mine, do you hear? You have been mme in the spirit for years, and now I shall have you in reality, Helen. You shall go with me away from this accursed place. Together we shall know the place we have never known." She urged him from her with the utmost gentleness, her ej4g looking into his pleadingly. No, no, no!" she cried, with an emphasis thait betokened her weakness. "Don't say that, Jaok-not that! Pity me, my friend-don't n.,a.k.e me sorry that I have seen you." He started: to interrupt her, but she raised her hand in a gesture that commanded silence, and went on. "Do you realise what it means— this thing that you iptopose? Listen—you knew Mrs. Arbuthnot, didnt you? She married about the time I did. Her wedding was a glorious one, and all her fnends thought she had done so well, you remember. She was congratulated by everybody; and for three years eho hid her misery. Then, one day, she ran away with Tom Gordon. The newspapers were full of it. They puiblished her picture, and his, and told all about her family, and all that sort of thing. "That was only a short time ago, Jack, as things go in this world, and ye&terday 1 met her on the street, looking like she had gone through the gates of hell. I shall never forget the pitiful loom in her eyes when she pased' me, and I pretended not to recognise her. Her ihaitr was dyed a bright eviden, and her cheeks -? were rouged; but no one can hide the shame she must always carry on her brow. "All the way home I thought of her—of our school days together, and of how she must have suffered!—for you know Gordon deserted her after a year in Paris, and she sunk lower and lower, until—well she was not a fit person for respectable people to acknowied-ge ever having known. Yet she was only one of many that I know, and- you know, too, Jack, and all have ended in the same horrible way. No, dear, the world 'has its own laws—and they are net to be broken. You ask me to give up home, family, honour, everything, and become an exile in a strange land. And what do you give in return? Nothing. Your love, vou say? Yes; but you get mine, too, in addition to all the rest, and a. woman's love outweighs a man's, Jack. "Do you know thpjt in comparison to a wife who destroys her home, Samson did a small thing when he pulled out the pillars and let the "temple dbwn on the heads of the Philistines?" "Oh, Jack!" she cried suddenly, the ealt tears fonoing themselves out, and flittering in the fire-light like moonstones as they dropped to the tiled earth, "I "iave prayed to God time and again to let me dtie-I have been so miserable, so forlorn! I have pleaded that death might come to me in any shape—at any time—so that I might escape the horror of my life, but to no avail-to no avail!" Her impassioned cry ended with a sob, and she wept as if her heart had long been bur- dened with its flood of bitter waters. He stood for a moment watching her. Then he spoke, and his voioe was low and btrong, like the voice of the north wind. "You talk of God," he said. "What is God but love? WM have ever known heaven axorafc those whose hearts were united in a devotion which no circumstance could alter? God lives in your heart, and in mine, darling—and there is a help for your misery. It is here—here in my arms; in the heart that has loved you since it knew you—setting you above other women as a queen above her slaves." She moved away from him slowly, her face grown ashen and her eyes filled with fear. "Let me say thie to you, Helen," he pleaded, following her and taking both lands in h:s. "You do not know what I have suffered—of the long yeans that I have thought o* you in his his wife, and of the agony that has eaten into my very lIoul And now I have come back to you-I' have come to claim you as my own—for you are my own'—you have always been mine! You will go with me now, won't you dear," he urged, drunkenly! "We will leave this place and its torments; we will go somewhere where too world will not know us, .nd there we aha-ll hve only for eaoh other, my sweet one, my What is the world, with its shams and its hypocrisies to us9 We shall leave it to its own misery, and I shall be all yo-'rs, and you all min>e— all mine, so Ion? as life lasts." He was so close to her now that she could feel his warm breath on her cheelc, and when he ceased speaking r31¡e raised her eyes quickly and looked straight into his toul. She saw there honour, and loyalty and a love beyond all telling. A great joy came into her heart, and for the first time in her lite she beheld the light that never was on land or sea Her cheeks grew pink as the inner petals of a waiter lily, and the hot blood surged up from her heart and dYed her lips to the redness of the rose incar- nadine. Her bosom heaved tum-iltuously. and her eyes became half shut, as one who dreams. klis arms closed around her quivering form, and he bent his head to kiss the fair, warm hollow of her throat, when suddenly the tense stillness was broken bLy, a faint cry that floated through the portieres from the upper hall. It was the plaintive, fretful voice of a child. "No, no, no!" were the words that emote the mother's ears like a sword of light cleaving the darknees of chaos. "I want my mamma to teach me my prayers!" The woman in the parlour tore herself roughly from) the man's fervid clasp; the colour fled from, her face, .leaving it ghastly white, and, with one reproachful look into his awe-struck oountenamce, she threw the arras aside and ran lightly up the stair. The man waited a moment irresolutely, and then he picked up his hat and stick and passed out into the windy night. As he opened the front door, he heard her in the hallway above, laughing and sobbing hysterically, laid calling her baby soft names.

HOW TO TAKE OUT PATENTS Many useful and novel appliances are from time to time devised which are not turned to practical account owing to want of knowledge on the part of inventors as to how to patent their inventions. We constantly receive letters asking our advice, and, with a view to affording information as to costs and modes of procedure in applying for provisional protection and patents and registered designs or trade marks, we have made arrangements accordingly. Any of our readers who desire such information should send a stamped envelope, enclosed to the Patent Editor, "Western Mail," Cardiff, by whom it will be handed to a thoroughly trust- worthy and experienced patent agent, who will reply fully to our correspondents; or an inter- view can be arranged on giving a few hours' notice.

LORD TWEEDMOUTH AND TORY LIVERPOOL
-?-?- LORD TWEEDMOUTH AND TORY LIVERPOOL Speaking at the luncheon at the Liverpoc Reform Club on Tuesday afternoon, Lorn Tweedmouth said the political representation < Liverpool and district could hardly be coi sidered satisfactory from a Liberal point c view, nor did he believe it was a represents tion which rightfully represented the true feeJ ings of the people of the district. They hear a great deail about Tory Liverpool, and whe he heard Liverpool constituencies and oths spoken of as hopeless places he told thet there was no such thing as hopeless constituen cies. A constituency was only hopeless becaut the Liberals in it were hopeless and helplei themselves. In Liverpool they had had son experience in municipal elections of how, wit good work and good candidates, they coul defeat the Tories even in their own gtronj holds. He urged them to extend the proce to Parliamentary contests, and secure loo rather than outside candidates.
