OUR 8 H 0 R T S TOR Y ,
OUR 8 H 0 R T S TOR Y 1 THE FATAL DOSE. "I whall be thankful when the voyage is over Eddis. It makes my blood boil to see the way Adamaon treats that tin fortunate lad, and yet it only aggravates matters if I attempt to interfere." "Oh I ofui quite beKeve that Adamson 16 ksrdly the sort of chap to brook interferance in any shape or form. It's rougb on poor Moaty though to be blessed with such bear for an unole and guardian. He's a plucky beggar for all he's ao weakly and delicate. "I rather fancy that latter fact is his sole recommendation in his uncle's eyes. Monty, so ke informed me tthe other day, is the only obstacle between him and a anug little estate in the South of England." Frank Eddis, first mate on board the sailing tihip Adrina, gave vent to a low whistle of comprehension. "Queer sort of confidence to impart, Curnor. or should have thought that whatever his feel- ings were on tho subject he would have kept Kin own counsel." "So be doubtless fully intended to do, but when a man puts down aa many brandies and sodas as AdAmson, keeping one's own counsel is no sudh easy thing. "A dheerful companion for a long set voyage! You must rue the day that made ywi take passage in the Adrina., simply beoasse I—your I old friend—happened to be aboard her. But of course I hr.-d no idea when I made the eug- ge~iion who your fellow passengers would tarn out to be, and this Adairison Hullo! talk of the devil and he appears. Come out of his way." The two sauntered off and a big-framed, samidy-haired man came stumbling up the com- panion. He seemed to have some difficulty in kaoping his footing, though the vessel was going along steadily enough. What d'ye make of the veather, Mr. Eddis?" he shouted, as he caught sight of the fast retreating figures of the two men. What a quwtion to Mk on such a day," Cvrnor whispered, as Eddis turned to answer the new comer. Surely this cloudless sky speaks for itself, and as for the sea, it looks more like liquid blue glass than anything else, though there is t bit of a swell on. Well, Monty, my boy, this BUp ought to put a tinge of colour in your cheeks if anything would." The 1ast remark was addressed to a frail- looking, dark-haired lad who had come quiet'y to hi& aide. I. I wish it would, Mr. Curnor," the boy OMd earnestly. I hate to be so pale and puny. A pretty-faced weakling, unole, called DM just now," he muttered between his teeth. Curnor ptctended not to have heard the words. Come and have a look through my glass," he said, oaming his anB through the lad's and leading him to the side. It seems long time since we sighted a ship; try if you can see one anywhere about." "Oh' What's that huge black log in the water?" the boy euddenly exclaimed, as he stood leaning on the rail. Curnor peered further over. A shark, by all the poweri 1" he cried. Ah! and the men have found him out, too." as an unwonted stir began on deck. What a horrid looking creature, and bow awfully close he is coming to us," Monty said, curiously scanning the brute's hideous shovel nose and hump-like fin. Y 011'11 tee some sport before long," called Eddis, hurrying past. We're going to hook him. He's a fine fellow over eleven feet itf he's an inch. But wait tall he gets a sniff of the beef, then you'll see him to perfection." In a few minutes a big shark-hook was baited, hitched to a. coil of stout line, and splash it went overboard. With a sweep of his tail the creature turned over, seized the tempting bait, and was making off with it when the rope tautened from above and stopped his progress, much to his evident disgust. Then a hard-fought battle began between the men above and the brute below. Furiously he re- sisted all etodeavours to hoist him up, lashing the water till it foamed like a frothing sheet around him, diving with such tremendous force that Me men hauling .001 to the lline had much thdo to keep their foct; then mioving his black snout again to the surface as if an amazement at being unable to get free. Presently a huge dog, the captain's special pride, was seen to spring on the taffrail. Quiver- ing with excitement he gathered himself to- gtsthar, and before he could be stopped cleared at a bound and mad* for the shark. "Get a boat over, save the dog if you can," shouted Captain Haines. "Oh! poor, poor Baron, that beast will kill him," shrieked Monty, struggling to free him- self from Curnor's deta-ining hand. "Let me go in the boat, I cam row, really I can, and Baron knows my voice; he will often come to me when he won't obey anyone else. Oh! do let me go." But it was too late for the boat. With a tremendous jerk the ilhark got away, hook and all; then darted forward to where the dog was swimming in hot pursuit—Baron had stopped for a moment in obedience to hie mas- ter's frantio whistling, but the game had proved too tempting—the black fin disappeared- the belly glistened as it came uppermost; there was a terrified, agonised howl, then shark and dog disappeared amid the blood-stained foam. The lad stood white and trembling, straining to coe if any thing could be done to save his favourite. "It's no use; that brute has finished him up. But be had no time to suffer much, that's one good thing," Cumor said, laying a kindly hand on the youngster's shoulder. "PerJiaps you'd have liked to change places, my dear nephew?" Adamson said sneeringiy, hearing the words as he came up to them. The boy flushed. "I would have dearly liked to save poor Baron if I could. We were very fond of each other," he answered quickly "A boy wouldn't have stood more chance than that dog, if he had happened to tumble overboard," Curnor heard Adamson mutter to himself. "What an easy way to get rid -0£ an encumbrance." Something in the glitter of his eyes, in the wild expression of bis fact gave his fellow pas- senger an uneasy feeling that the man WM net wholly responsible for his actions. True, the doctor, when questioned a few days ago on the subject, had replied, with a shrug of the shoaldere, that there was nothing worse the matter with Mr. Adamson than an undue ten- dency to indulge too freely in wine and spirits. But the doctor wac- an inexperienced young fel- low, in whose judgment Curnor had not much faith. At any rate be determined not to leave Monty more alone with his forbidding rela-tive than could be helped. The day after the sacrifice of poor Baron came an unpleasant change in the weather. The sky looked like ink, a fierce gale of wind sprang up, amd the heavy seas set the vessel rolling and plunging, till at times it seemed impossible for her ever to right her- self again. Added to this the air was fright- fully hot, the gale being like a sirocco for tem- perature Down below, w'i.t-h the skylight closed ant* the companion sliut to prevent the v ater from washing down, the atmosphere was something frightful. Towards the end of the something frightful. Towards the end cf the second day the wind dropped considerably, and Curnor, who had remained faithful to his self-imposed task of watching over Monty, struggled on deck for a mouthful of air. Adam- son had gone some time since to his cabin, to try and gef some rest he (-aid, as he had slept badly the night before; Monty, overcome with the heat, had fallen asleep in the saloon. It was a relief to feel the air blowing around him after the stuffiness of the cabin, and, lighting his pipe, Cumor sought about for a fairly shel- tered spot where lie could enjoy iiiti smoke in peace, without fear of a sousing from the spray which dashed over the vessel as she plunged through the heavy ^eas. Presently, he saw Monty's head appear above the companion, and in another minute the lad staggered up, olosely *wed by Adamson. The men were busy altering sail, eo that part of the ship was prac- tically deserted. Curnor saw Monty look eagerly round as if in search of someone, and noticed that he was then ashen pale. "Poor little chap, I must not leave him alone w:Jh that brute, so good-bye to my peaceful smoke." he thought, regretfully. "Good God! what are they doing? The boy will be over- board if -k- leaas over like that. He sprang to his feet, and hurried towards the spot where the two figures were struggling together. Adamson seemed trying to hoist the lad over the side; Monty clinging desperately to the rail, and resisting with adl his might his uncle's endeavours to make him loose hold As if maddened by Curnor's warning shout, he tore the boy's hands from their clinging grasp but at that moment the Adrina dipped heavily, he lost his balance on the slippery deck, struck out wildly, and went rolling like a barrel against the bulwarks. Scrambling up with an oath, lie shook his fitft at the boy, sheered towards the companion, and disappeared below. Monty clung trembling to his preserver's arm. "Oh! Mr. Curnor, don't leave me," he panted. Uncle tried to kill me in the ealoon. I woko up with his fingers gripping my throat. The ship rolled no he was flung on one side, and I managed to scramble up here; but you saw what he was trying to do." Cumor wen* in search of Csuptain Haines, who was below. He met him hurrying from his own oabin. "Such an awful thing has happened," he ex- claimed. before the other could speak. "Adam- son has taken poisun by mistake. He's dying in agony; nothing can save him." "What was it? He was on deck a short time j ago," gasped the other in bewilderment. ] "There was a strong solution of carbolic acid for disinfecting purposes in brandy bottle in his cabin. He evidently forgot it was not brandy, and being I fear in a state of intoxica- tion dra.uk freely of it before he found out his mistake." Curnor turned away with a shudder. Nemesis had chosen an awful form in which to claim her due.
