OUR SHORT STORY
-? OUR SHORT STORY A KNIGHT IN AKMOirK. and Squire Horsdale *lE<i L fas; frienda in their youth. Then thoir P^thg had lain apart; the one seeking his for- er tune in America, where he had died penniless, VinK his only son Oscar to fight his way in 6 world M best he could; the other sucoeed- death of the heirs diroc-t to the estate or8d">le, where he had be«>n living for the kA two Years. One of the squire's first acts n finding htirneelf raised from comparative Poverty to affluence had been to seek out the 80n of his old friend, and Oscar had thankfully ^p'pted the post of steward on an estate ad- ba!r*r^ ^or8da,le. Poor squire, he had not ffrgaaned for what- was to follow! Madge, his motherless elder daughter, was so pretty, I tih t ^ght be pardoned for thinking flri^ °w_ nien would be good enough for her, *r«gged hia shoulders good- htjmouredly when his ti*ter. Mi^. Varney, jjjjo m too capricious, and had hftr fi away three excellent matches during her season. The squire was away in quest of a hunter up to his weight —not an easy thing to find—and had taken the head coachman with him to assist at the pur- chase. The butler was down with rheumatism and could net. stir from bed; the groom bad begged ieay go home tc a dying father; the gardeners rr- stable helps had gone home for the night. 7?;ere was simply not a man avail- able about ;bp place, and the unfortunate womenfolk v»d iust discovered that a burglary ha.d been planned to take place in the early part of that very might, it having come to the know- ledge of the thieves that the house was unpro- tected by the usual male contingent. The dis- covery had been made by the younger Mise HorwckHe—Trix—wtho had' lixtkily overheard the men talking in the shrubbery just before Oscar's arrival, and, herself unseen, waited till they had orept away. By that time she had ascertained tbatHhey intended to get in at a oenain window in the hall, from whence they would proceed to the plate-room npgtaire. Evidently, whoever had planned the robbery was wwll acquainted with the ways of the house, and the necessity to get the iob over early, so as to be clear a-wa-v from the neighbourhood before daybreak. Mad go declared her suspi- cions that the case of suddm illness to which the groom had been summoned was a polite fiction, and that it was he who vae at the bot- tom of the affair. -p- -?-- Horsdale Hall lay too far back from the road for assistance to be easily summoned, even if anyone was likely to be passing so late in that lonely part of the country, so Oscar felt fohltl: I with this household of women depending on him for assistance discretion would assuredly be the better part of valour, and he must be cautious in planning the means of defence. "The thing will be to frighten them off before they can get upstairs," he said. "I never go about without a revolver, so if they attempt to fire they will find me ready for "hem." "Madame is a capital shot," broke in Trix. "Are you?" Oscar said, in surprise, turning to the elder girl, whose delicate, slender beauty made .1. ai-ertioii difficult to believe. '"Well, I io-nig'iit, at any rate, your skill will not, be w* too the test. Luokilv I know from what r>>rin- to expect the enemy's attack, so can oh()()jlO ny position." <'But .v.i ?11\0"; net watch alone." said Madge. "I really CA >. <OOd shot, and though"—with a little would not kill anybody for the vwJa'. if T aim low I could not injure bhe.n very mr.á:. nould I?" He laughed. "I thisilf ro t might venture thaA with a clear conscience. Mrs. Vamey, will you mind warn- ing the servants of what may happen, and tell them to keep out of the way upstairs? There is not a moment to lose, for it will never d" iff those fellows get here before we are ready for them." "I wish I could shoot." Trix said, when. she hadi helped Oeoar to put out the lamps, Madge having gone in search of a revolver. "Never mind," he sadd, consolingly, as he followed her into the hall. "Your quick ears will be of the greatest use, for you can warn us from the landing above the moment you hear the slightest sound. Now, whtrre will be the best place to stand?" glancing round the old hall, which looked weird and rnfruniliar by the dim light of the lamp that he held' aloft. "How would it do to get inside one of those suite off armour?" came Mage's voice from the darkness above. Oscar looked up and saw her standing on the topmost stair, surveying the scene below. She had thrown a cloak over her white dress, and carried a dark lantern in her hand. "A capital idea," he said, "but I shall tare to ask you two to help me equip myself for the fray." "I know how it goes," said Madge. "I dressed father up in it for some tableaux we had last Christmas." She put down thf lantern, and with Trix's help buckled on piece after piece till he stood fully equipped. Her fingers trembled ag fehe put the sword in his hand. "Oh! if you should be hurt," she whispered (Trix had gone to take up her post of sentinel), "I should never forgive myself." "My darling, have no fear," he whispered back, putting his steel-clad arm round her slight form. "I would gladly give my life for yours. Surely you know that. Give me the right to protect you always. I will work day and night to make a home worthy of you, if ouly you will give me one little word of hope; if-" "I hear foot-steps," called Trix softly, un- suspicious of the interesting tete-a-tete she was interrupting. Oscar stepped into position at the foot of the staircase. "Stand on that corner stair, Madge," he paid. "No, higher still: that's better. Wait until the window is opened, then flash the larttern round. and fire at the wall below. The noise may frighten them away. If not, leave me to manliit' the rest; don't attempt to come down. Ah! they have started," as a grating sound ? ivu heard close by. They waited in breathless susDense. Swiftlv. and almost noiselessly, the work went on, till at last the shutters yielded, and a dark form was seen outside. "Bang" went a shot into Hhe wall. It evidently staggered the unwel- come visitors, but after a moment a voice, which Madge recognised as that of the shifty- eyed groom, exoJaimed: — "It's only a girl; we can soon do for her. Harkee, miss," he shouted, "there are three of us here, a.nd we can all shoot as straight as you. Let Us m quiet, &tld we won't do you any harm; but we mean to have the plate sometow. Thai's settled her," he muttered, with a brutal laugh, as Madge, in obedience to a whispered "Keep quiet" from Oscar, in ad 9 no reply. A slip of a boy was pushed through the broken panes, but .he scrambled back on the broad window-seat wfth a. terrified "There's a man standing there; help me up, quick." "You little fool! It's only one of them bloomin figgurs I told you about. Look sharp, and let us in." As the lad turned to do his bidding, the "bloomin' figgur" stepped forward and brought t'he flat of his ewwrd with a mighty thwactc on the shoulder of his youthful adversary. The boy tumbled to the ground with a yell of pain and fright, while Oscar fired a couple of shots in rapid succession towards the dark forma looming dimly in the pa-le moonlight. The groom, thinking he had only his young mis- tress to deal with, sprang through the open casement, but recoiled wth a stifled oath ag a. grip of iron fastened on his throat. Oscar would soon have settled him, but was seized in his turn by the second man, a big, brawny fel- low, who, flinging himself on the two wrest- ling figures, forced them to the ground, Oscar undermost. The weight of his airnour handi- capped him terribly, and he was forced to loose his hold of the groom and fling him off before he could struggle to his feet and tackle the more formidable antagonist. Madge, watching the combat with intense anxiety, dared not fire for fear of hitting friend as well as foe, but she and Trix. after a whispered consultation, stole down, resolved to attack the enemy in the rf ar. "Oscar told me not to stir from here," Madge said, as Trix, the practical, handed her their I father's hunting crop, "but I oa-n't leave him to fight three men snngle-handed." ¡ As it happened, the third "man" (aged 11) I lay stunned where he had fallen on the stone flooring, but Oscar had all his work cut out to I keep the other two at bay. He was beginning I to wonder how much longer he could hold his own, when, simultaneously with w&at the girls believed to be an awful blow, though the fellow who was trying his level best, to throw Oscar, hardly felt it, oame a thundering knock at the dcor. It effectually settled the burglars. Seiz- ing the unconscious boy, they scrambled out of the broken window just as the squire, who had unexpectedly returned, gained admittance. The first thing he saw on crossing the thres- hold was one of his own suits of armour appa- rently come to life. "WSio the deuce are you, sir?" he said, wincing at the vigorous ehake from the steel- gloved hand. I "Oscar Calderwood, my own true knight, I papa," answered Madge demurely, putting her hand on her lover's ann. The squire glaneed Bbarply at the pair. I "Wha.t an old fool I was not to guess how it would be!" he muttered. "And she refused one of the leading men of the day last season." The burglary affair, however, drove all thoughts of the lovers out of his head for the time being, and when he had leisure to reflect- he ccneolod himself with the recollection that even a his future ^ou-iii-law lacked worldly possessions, he was rich in chivalrous courage. TRADE AND POLITICS.
TRADE AND POLITICS. AN UTTERSnsTlJTG STORY. The "Sunderland Echo" reports thaA a Sim- deriand gentleman ivlho has been in the Mid- lands for a few days brings back an interest- ing piece of information. In the course of conversation a manufacturer told Iiim that in resentment of the German Emperor's telegram to President Kruger he had transferred to a firm at Lyons certain large orders which he had for years sent to Germany. Some time after lie had made this change he Nas surprised to find hiniself questioned upon the subject by an official from the Board of Trade. This gentleman. ctat«'l that ruptures of commercial connections with Germany, because of the F Empercr's aotion, had been so numerous that they had actually affected diplomatic rela- tions, there being a suspicion in Germany tihat the British Government had somehow instigated the resentful action of our traders. The manufacturer under notice is still doing his business with the Lyons firm, having found that he can do so advantageously.

A GOOD CROP OF WHEAT.
-?" A GOOD CROP OF WHEAT. So much has been said as to the poor harvest of 1896 in many quarters, that it is pleasant to hear of some farmers who did well. A stack of wheat, the produce of ten acres, on Court Farm, Southminster Marshes, in the occupation of Mr. A. J. Page, was threshed, and yielded 82 quarters, or over ten quarters an acre. This is the best crop of wheat grown in the district for years. =========== I
