..? OUR 8 H 0 R T STORY.
? OUR 8 H 0 R T STORY 1 MANON'S OUBSE. The mn Was slowly sinking behind tie pine woods that clothed the base of the hills rising abruptly around s, little village in the South of France, flooding the valley with a rosy light, and softening the rugged outlines of (the hill- tops till they seemed to fade aw»v in the dim grey of the distant skies. A man and a girl rested, out of breath,, leaning against one of the boulders that were scattered thickly around. He, a. true eon of the South, with lithe, sinewy frame, black hair, and bright dark eyes. She, a daughter of Albion, with the typical fair hair and clear, fresh complexion of the irace. Clasp- ing both hamds round the man's arm, she stood gazing intently at the wild bea.uty of the valley before her. The man watched her expressive face in silence for some minutes, then, bending towards her, said gently: "You did not think it was so fair as this. Susan, my own dear, true-hearted wife. He spoke in French. changing the harsh English name of Susan inlbo the softer Suzanne. The girl gave him a quick, loving glance. "Henri, I never, never should have believed ftnything could be half so beautiful. When fou used to tell me about your native village, it made me long to see it for your sake; but I never thought it would be like this. Oh! if we could live here always! If only you could givft uo that horrible life of constant danger. Ha put his arm caressingly round her slight form. "Ma mie, I must, live my life before the resting part can come. As to daixg-ar, I fear ■atiuflg;, in that lies the secret of my jlUccess. J You yourself have seen that. Don't you re- member the night I first met you, when the lioness sprang upon me, and the people screamed that I was a dead man ? Had I shown few then, even for a single instant, I should not be your husband now, my Suzanne. But I tell you. I fear nothing." "Your father's words." a harsh voice mut- tered at his elbow; and, looking round, they saw a tall, gaunt woman sitting on a rock be- bind them. "Yet see the end," she continued, rising to her feet in groowiog excitenvertt" Young, handsome, the people's favourite: never known to fail, no matter what feat he undertook; and yet he flipped and was killed while doing such an easy triok: a trick that any beginner might have done. Do you know why that was, Henri Veron? It was because the curse was on him. He lured my Stephanie away, and then out her off and left her to die, because he loved your mother's false, beautiful face, and wanted her for his wif-?> and not my poor truating child'. Then I cursed him—aye, and his ohildren after him. You say you fear no danger; but I tell you your hour shall oome betimes. As my child died through your father's sin, 80 shall his child die by my I revenge. My curse is on you, Henri Veron, and when you lie dying in agony, with your yellow-haired girl weeping beside you, remember old iMiaoon's words." Her voice rose to a shrill aoroam, as standing on the rock she spread forth her wrinkled hands, calling Heaven to witness the trutih. of what she said. 1 "The curse is on you," she rfirieked again; then, leaping from the rook, disappeared among the shadowy vapours that were stealing up from the river below. Suzanne olung, shuddering, to her husband. "How awful, how awful!" she sobbed, convul- sively. "What does she mean? Even if your father did harm her, it was not your fault." He shook his head. "She muet be mad," he said. "I never heard anything before of what she declared just now, nor do I know her. Think no mrre of it ma mie. It is getting damp and ohill. Come away, and forget that woman's caviugs. Some months back, Henri Veron, the to ted lion-tamer, had been in England, g.vr' g a seres of those dangerous performances which soeni to exercise such a strange tascmat-ion (,%or the public in general. At one of the .a;ge provincial towns he had been introduced to Suzanne by one of her friends, whose a/^uain- tanoe he had previously made. Tojehed ty her fair prettiness and gentle ma i"9rs he pu- st'atfed her to be his wife. An orp'iw from tiiildhood, looked upon as an tlnneeeDclIT Lvr- den by tliqf uncle who had brought her up, she loved with heart and soul the young Frenchman w'ho had won her, and gladly promised to share his precarious for- tunes, setting horeelf the task of mastering his mother tongue (the was a willing teacher) as the first step in the wandering life she was hence- forth to i-ead. The very in-tensiiy of her love made her regard with tenfold more aversion the terrible nature of his performances. She knew he held his life in his hand each time he was wonit so proudly to declare he had not the slighiteet fear. The English tour finished, Verom igave himself a much-needed holiday, and it was while iintrodojointg Suzanne to his own people, and dhoiwin-g her has native village, that old WaAon had come across their path. Three years passed away. Veron had pros- pered so wonderfully that he had at last yielded to Suzanne's entreaties, and promised at the end of the fourth year to give up his dangerous profession, and devote his life to her and their boy. She had never ceased to re-call the awful curse uttered1 the fimt evening of their arrival at Henri's old home ibut on time wore on, and her husband escaiped from the daily perils that met him at every freeh performance, she came to believe that her own fervent prayers for hit safety, her pity for the dead, unknown Stephanie, whose fate had 'been so sad, must have outweighed the curse of vindictive old Mianon. One evening Henri oaine in torn and braised from a fearful tussle with a lioness. He had blPalv escaped with ],3 life, and for some time after woo unable to leave his room but the announcement thAft a royal personage (who hiad signified his wish to witness the noted' lion-tamer's remarkable -performance) would be shortly visiting the town where they were then stopping made him resolve to resume work before he was really fit for the exertion. Suzanne did her utmost to dissuade him, but in vain; he simply laughed at her fears. On the morning of the dreadted day, whilst out with her boy, she suddenly encountered old Man on. It was a lonely spot, some distance from the town; and, seizing her victim firmly by the arm, the old creature lifted up her voice and renewed her -horrible curse on Henri. "The hour of my revenge is near," she con- cluded, with fiendish delight. "I have tracked him from place to place for many a weary month, but now it is finished; the time has oome for my Sttephanie to be avenged." Clasping the frightened boy to her, the poor girl rushed back, and once more implored her husband to give tip the perofrmance; but twain in vain. He had always forbidden her to be present, saying that the one thing that would make him lose his nerve would be to hear her voice raised in agony, if she fa'neied he was in danger. She dared n-ot disobey his wishes, but determined this time to follow him, and to get as near to the arena as possible, without being actually among the spectators. She .reached the cirous just aa he entered the arena. Loud clapping greeted1 his appearance. for he was a great favourite with the public, and this was the first time he had been scan since the accident. She dared not trust herself to watch, but, judging from the applause, all seemed going well, when suddenly the cheers changed to cries of horror. mingled with the screams of women and the hoarse shouting of men giving directions. Pushing her way through the excited crowd, SHSMame forced a passage to the front, and arrived just in time to see her husband's apparently lifeless body borne bleeding from the cage of an infuriated tigress. Physicallv weak still from his late illness, he had tripped as the animal sprang towards him. cad, tbengh he recovered himself instantly it was .00 late- the tigres s was upon him. "He is alive, nisclom", a doctor, who had been fortunately present, said, after a careful examination of the wounded man, "but he is frightfuuy mangled, and the sight of both eyes is gone." "But there is hope?" she moaned. The doctor -looked compassionately at. her. "If care and skill can save him he shall live," he answered, gently. Three months later Suzanne took her hus- band back to France. "I wonder if old Manon will come to see how her cune has worked. She ought to be saticrfied now," he said, wearily, one day when his wife 1 had guided h.m to the spot where they had first heard the terible words. She had hitherto avoided it with shuddering aversion, but that evening he had insisted on going. "Manon is dead," said Suzanne, laying Iter hand on his. "I would not tell you before, because I wanted you to forget all about her, but she was knocked down and trampled to death by the crowd the night of your accident. After all, Henri, her curse was not fulfilled." "Would that it had been!" he murmured bitterly. "Better death than this miserable dragging out of existence." "Ahl do not say that." she cried. "Think of our boy. Think of me. I could not live without you. Henri. jTHE CITY OF BARODA,
THE CITY OF BARODA, Barodta, where the reoent terrible accident occurred on the occasion of the Viceroy's visit, is one of the most interesting oities in Western India. Like mamy other native capitals, it is a curious jumble of Eastern barbarism and Western civilisation. On the one hand exists an arena where elephant and rhinoceros fight and gladiatorial combats are periodically car- ried cm, and on the other is a magnificent new palace constructed on the latest principles of Royal Engineer architecture, and furnished in sumptuous fashion with English furniture. The public park where the holocaust of native sightseers took place is situated just outside -the crowded precincts of the native city. It is a purely modern institution, designed on the Kew lines, and managed by a superintendent who had hi8 training at Kew. si
MARRYING THEM ALL IN TURN.
MARRYING THEM ALL IN TURN. Hengrave Hall, Bury St. Edmunds, one of the most important domains at present in the market, at one time belonged to Lady Penelope Gage, who inherited it from her mother, the Countess Rivers. Of Lady Gage it is related that she received a proposal of marriage from Sir George Trcnchard, Sir John Gage, and Sir William Hervey in the same week, and to keep peace between the rivals she threatened the first aggressor with her perpetual displeasure, telling them if they would wait she would marry them all in turn-a promise which <?he actually per- formed. The lady survived all her husbands, and her will settled Hengrave upon her taird eon, Edward Gage, who was created a baronet by Charles II., in acknowledgment of the services of Sir Henry Gage, slain at Culhaiu Bridge.
THE QUEEN'S CORONATION RING.
THE QUEEN'S CORONATION RING. The Queen's coronation ring formed the subject of an extremely interesting pwper read by Dr. WickhamLegg, F.S.A., at the general meeting of the Royal Archaeological Institute. It con- sists of a band of gold, varying from two to five millimetres in breadth, with a large rounded sapphire 13 millimetres acrces, and set "a jour." Over it is a cross of fine rubies, and it is surrounded by fine white brilliants. Tracing the history of coronation ring. the speaker mentioned that they were held to symbolise the wedding of the Sovereign with the nation. At the Quean's coronation it was regarded as an auspicious omen, indicative of the close bond which should exist—which this generation has seen fulfilled—that the ring hould have fitted the Royal fioger very tightly.

TilJS WnLAU UJ? UlliViD^. An observing tourist who visits Rome and walks through the Btreots is doubtless sur- prised that there are very few houses bearing the ominous number "13," nearly all the houses that should bear those figure* being marked "121t" or "14a." Nor is the superstition re- garding the fateful 13 absent froir scientific Germany, for the other day a merchant in Ber- lin applied to tho magistrate of the district to have the number of his shop changed from 13 to 12b. The magistrate, however, refused to grant the petition. In Frankfort, on the other hand, the owners of buildings bearing No. 13 are allowed to change the figures upon a sim- ple application to the proper authorities.
