; OUR SHORT STORY ?
OUR SHORT STORY ? •* A PHILOSOPHER. Plumtro wu wealtfov, eccentric, (V. °n«W«red himself wise. The fact was, he ? 40 the reputation of a philosopher, and to shape "his life He never tired of quoting his 1 authors. Plato, Aristotle, and a list centuries ago turned to dust, were in j,y. mouth as the cent, per cent. ^broker. I have said that Mr. 1'lumptre t S fyw ^^ntrio, and he certainly was entitled 'h" if not to the one that was hit; life. Possessed of great lie had numerous calls upon his never gave a penny ^Wio begga¡r without first insisting that the Was a worthless fellow, who could Employment if he wished, &c.; then hi* han<* in hiis pookert and sent the away happy. 8U^>SrTi,be,d to all the charity schools, they were humbugs, and did no a goOd. Every church got a good round ft of Mr. Plumptre, butt he never tiheit doors, though he rented and a in every parish. He had old- °Us^OTri8, wliidh he adhered to with I^birtacity. In his large snd com- ?^n8i011, which he rnliabited with his °* ihe was a bachelor), he would never had wax candles. A and a heavy brass ltr.ocker, 03 »%lit ub cold, osnam<«>t.arii door. He rarely went upon journeys, but wben 1 compelled to do so he used his travelling carriage, and it was hie boast that he had never been in a railway train. His costume was as antique as his notions. He wore an old-fashioned snuff-coloured coat with broad lapels, knee-breeches, buckled shoes, and a hat with an immense brim. Such was I Archibald Plimiptre, the rich man and philosopher of Middletown. Mr. Piumptra had but one relative on earth -3, nephew, named Leonard Gray. Mr. Gray led a bapry and comfortable life; he didn't do anything in particular but amuse himself, and he was in the prime otf youth. His uncle, who supplied km with unlimited means, loved him as dearly as if ho had been his own son; but this did not prevent him from finding fault with him upon every imaginable subject. He wished Leonard to be a philosopher like himself, and ae he 'had give,, him a splendid education, and he was possessed of ere at talents, the old gentle- man saw no reason why his nephew should not wear his mantle after he had departed for the other world. "You must write books," said Archibald one day. when, in a testy mood, he was lecturing his nephew for indolence. "Write books as I have done. Your country calls upon you for exertion; seek to distinguish your name; remember my example; give yourself up to study; be wise and great. See what a book I have written, 'The Law of Nature and the End Thereof.' 1 "And who ever read your book?" asked Mr. tjtMy. in am inquiring way. "Everybody, everybody," shouted Mr. PI 11 nipt re, growing red in the face and thumping the floor energetically with hie cane. "Every- body who has any brains. Those who have no brains I aon't expect or wish to read such matters. They couldn't comprehend them if they tried. The Rev. Jolb Foss told me only the other day that my book was the most wonderful production in literature that had been given to ..e world this century, and the Rev. Job Foss is one of the few men that comprehend the object and power of philosophy." Leonard Gray smiled incredulously, for he knew that his uncle had recently given the Rev. Job a round sum of money to complete the building of his church, and this held occurred just after the parson's panegyric on his uncle's book. The Rev. Job knew h.uv to •deal with philosophers." By dint of talk and scold'ng, Mr. Plumptre at length got his nephew to agree to write a book, and, moreover, he promised1 'hat he would become a phiilosopher if it was in 1: 'm. In an evil hour Leonard Gray made the pro but he frequently did things unpleasant to oblige hi1'; unole, so he consoled himself with the t'hought thiat he would give pleasure to one wh-o had always loved- him, no matter how much annoyance he might personally feel. Mr. PI umpire was delighted; he posted in haste to the Rev. Job Foss, and explained to 'him what a wonderful young man Leonard Gray was, how much mind he possessed, and how great was his ambition to help the world with his knowledge. The Rev. Job ,aw the thing in the same light that Mr. Plumptre did, and! predicted t'hat Leonard Gray was alone worth to wear the honours that hie uncle would bequeath him. That morning the wily Job rot a fat rcll of bank-notes from Mr. Plumpi. V*, pocket to purchase a library for his Sund'ay- Sohool. From the day that Leonard Gray decided to turn philosopher, he shut lid's doors against his friends and retired to study, renouncing all social intercourse with the outer world. He commenced to diet -on herbs, and used water instead of wine. Mr. Plumptre was not prepared for this, and remonstrated against this severe regimen. Leonard was fixed in his purpose, however, and showed his unole good authority from the ancients for his course, so Mr. Plumptre, confronted by his own authors, had to yield. Before the year had expired Leonard Gray composed a work on a new school of philosophy. At first his uncle frowned at some of the doctrines., but the Rev. Job declared they were bold, novel, and startling, with broad, deep, and unique ideas, so -Mr. Plumptre was once again happy, and the Rev. Job's parish none the worse for the praise bestowed on Leonard Gray. The next work that Leonard Gray produced was a volume of philosophical poems. His friends read them and insisted on beholding the author. They swarmed about his house and would not be refused admittance. They wanted once more to behold his face, and pro- bably smell his fleeh-pots, for he used to give good dinners before he turned philosopher. Overcome by their importunities, he opened his doors, and they rushed into his house t o behold him. He received their greetings with shyness and an awkwardness of sympathy, for they appeared no longer as the friends of a year looftore, they seemed afraid of committing themselvee in the presence of so wise a, ma.u, and the old cordial shake of the hand andl happy I smile were absent. It seemed to Leonard Gray as if the wall had grown up betwen his companions and him- self, and he groaned as he recollected what he was and what he was striving to become. He had pleaded no one but his uncle, and certainly by cutting him- self off from the society of his companions he had rendered himself unhappy. The Rev. Job Foss was about the only person besides Mr. Plumptre who saw a great future for Leonard Gray. Stale, ridiculous theories and flat poems never could perch a man on the summit of fame. So thought Leonard Gray as he turned over ill his bed "nd counted the ticking of the clock, through the ;l.>ng, weary hours of the night succeeding the visit of his friends. No, no, he wasn't modelled for a philosopher. All this thing must be brought to a termination. He would "eek his uncle and tell him thait his effort had been a failure, that the days of philosopbwa had pulsed away, that this was ,too practical an age for theory. Men, to make their mark, must act, not talk. Mr. Plumptre heard his nephew with more patience than might have been expected from one of his temperament. "So you think you have made a failure?" he said. "Something very near to it," .-eplied Leonard. "Believe me, my dear uncle, I have endeavoured'! to adopt your theories and emulate your example, but when I reflect how far short T have cone Of your fame I am oonvrnced that a philosopher like yourself as only produced coe in a great while. You must -vear t- e ho'iorn* alone; I can never be worthy of vo-i in that I line." Archibald Plumptre's face brightened as he spoke: "You are correct, Leonard, quite correet. jS'en like me di-j not found in the hedges. The Rev. Job Foss thinks so, -and you know h« is an aoute observer. Go batik to your te., 1 and I'll stick to my nnilosophv. I shall write another book, and the Rev. Job shall revise it. Open your house, Leonard, feast, make merry and marry, if you are fool enough to trust a woman. Your old uncle will furnish you all the means you require, but I know you will always revere my memory, and you will publish all my manuscripts, particularly my essays on 'Life and its Uses,' after I am gone." "Indeed I will," replied Leonard; "good, kind. true unole that you have ever been to me." "Say no more," replied Mr. Plumptre, wiping hits eyes with his coat sleeve. "I had hopes that vou had ambition, but it's all past. I was wrong in supposing that you could be a philosopher upon command. The race is almost extinct; I shall perhaps be the last." Leonard Gray married, and, although his uncie sneered at his weakness, he provided him with every comfort he could desire. Shortly after Leonard's marriage a fire broke out in Mr. Plumptre's house, and so rapid was the conflagration that he had barely time to escape with his life. The only thing Mr. Plumptree deplored was the loss of his manuscripts, which had been the labour of his life. These he could never replace. This weighed so heavily on his mind that his health began to fail, and he was one morning found dead in hi:s bed. So the world got but one book from the pen of the philosopher of Middletown, and thab it refused to read.

ILIGHTING AT LLANELLY.I
I LIGHTING AT LLANELLY. I At a meeting of the Lianelly Chamber of Commerce on Friday night a letter was read from the borough council to the effect that the question of improving the gas supplied to the town was receiving their attention.—Mr. Fred Poweil did not think this was a satis- factory reply at all. The gas supplied to the town was disgraceful, and it was high time that the council called upon the gas company to fulfil the terms of their contract as to public lighting. After all the complaints, however, the only reply that the council gave was than the matter was receiving attention. He thought the council were falling short of their duty in this matter.—Mr. Tom Hughes, J.P., vigo- rously defended the borough council, and said t the reply was all that could be expected. (Dries of "No.") Wsll, he repeated that lie considered the reply was quite satisfactory. It was all very well to talk about prosecuting the igas company, but before that cculd be done an independent test of the quality of the light would have to be made. Any test made by the town sur- veyor would not hold good in a oouit of law. Con;plaints were made about the poor light in the chamber of commerce room, but that was not the fault of tbe gas, but was due to defec- tive fittings.—Mr. William Bowen agreed with Mr. Powell that the borough council were very remiss in this matter, and it was his intention to move a resolution calling upon the council I. to do all they could to introduce electric light- ing into the town.—The discussion then terminated.

HEATY PENALTY AGAINST G.W.R.…
HEATY PENALTY AGAINST G.W.R. CO. AT CARMARTHEN At Carmarthen Petty Sessions on Saturday Police-sergeant William Thomas charged the Great Western Railway Company with tom- mitting a breach of the Explosives Act. Mr. Ludford', solicitor, Llanelly, defended.—The prosecutor gave evidenoe to the effect that on Sunday, tihe 8th inst., lie proceeded with Police-constable Harris, of Conwil, to the j storehouse erected bv the company at their No. 1 Quarry, adjoining the main line in the parish of Llanpumpsaint, and entered the building under the authority of a search war- rant, which the latter bad procured. Inside 'the place he discovered 588 cartridges, com- posed of an explosive called tonite, weighing 2211b. lOoz. 6dr., although the building WM not licensed under the Act.—Mr. Ludford ad- mitted the offence, and in extenuation pleaded that the fact of their being suoh a large quan- tity of explosives stored there was due to a mistake on the part of the officials ait Swindon. The manager of the quarry had, in the first case, sent to Swindon for 100 cartridges only, ,but the official at the other end sent down 1001b. in weight of cartridges. Moreover, ibefore this consignment reached the quarry, 200 more cartridges had been ordered, and owing to a similar clerical mistake another 2001b. in weigh* were dispatohed. Each cartridge weighed about 6oz. The company were making arrangements to have a proper storehouse erected on the aipot, and a licence would in due course be applied for. As it happened, there were no buildings near to which any damage could be done. The particular explosive in use had been tested by an eminent authority, and it had been proved that it would not explode even if a barrelful of it was set on fire, or if bailf a ton of iron was dropped on it. It would not explode at all except when brought into contact with another material of which the detonators were specially composed. —One of the cartridges was brought into court j. and examined by the magilltra.tea.- The Benoh considered t>he charge proved, and inflioted a fine of jei0 and £ 1 3s. 6d. costs. .1
NEW STEELWORKS FOR BRITON…
NEW STEELWORKS FOR BRITON FERRY. The negotiations for the site of another lar$» steelworks at Briton Ferry have now been com. pl-etod. The site selected has been in great ro quest for some years. It is the same on whiot the old ironworks stood, and in close proximity to the Briton Ferrv bla.*t furnaces. It has its quay wall, where ships of 2.000 tons can come along side, and is in direct communication with tne Great Western and Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railways, Briton Ferrv Dock. and Neath Canal, It is understood that six furnaces will lie built forthwith, and this will mean employment to about 350 to 1-00 hands. Amongst the eom- pany are some of the most influential and !>*•$*- known commercial gentlemen in the Princi- pality. The (immunity are indebted to Mr. Tom Williams, solicitor, for bringing this large com- mercial enterprise to the neighbourhood.
