OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY THE SEABED BROW, PART I. "I ran across him in March of 1884 in the ltoyaJ Infirmary at Glasgow," said Dr. Lindsay. "It was certainly the most interesting case I have Over had. and, were it not for the patent conceit involved in such an assertion, I would go so far On to term it the most remarkable that has ever Oome into t'he practice of any physician. "Why don't I write it up? Well, I'll give You the facts and let you answer that question for yourself. < < < At that time I was one of the visiting ertaff at Wie infirmary. I had studied in laris with Charcot, and had made something of a speciality of nervous disorders. There was a young house- 8urgeon named MoLeod with whom I became quite intimate. largely because I found that he lilted to go further into his casee than do most hospital attaches, and I had asked him once to be sure to notify me if anytiiMng unusual in line should turn up. Well, on the niffhit of which I am going to tell you, I was preparing to retire and had fcbout half-undressed. It was after ten, and I had had a hard day Suddenly my night bell rang violently. I Throwing on my coat and trousers again, I hurried to the door and opened it, to find one of the infirmary porters standing outside. "What is it, Sandy?" I aaked, in some "^Priee; for the visiting etaff are not usually rur" un at lusclit for HOSPITAL cmes. "Please, sir," ftaid he, "DT. McLeod told me to ask ye to step around—that he had what he tihought ye'd like." I knew thaJt McLeod would not have senit such a message without reason, so, after hurry- ing on a few clothes in more permanent shape, I started. It must have been nearly eleven o'clock when I reached the infirmary and McLeod met me at the door of his room. "Come in a mirnute," he said. "It's a cold night and a hot whisky won't hurt you. I hope you haven't damned me for sending for you, but I know you would never forgive me if I had not." "What is it?" I asked, sitting down, while he poured the hott water into my glass. "Well," eaid he, "it's a man who was brought in here at half-past nine- a seafaring I man, I should judge. Anyhow, he came off a whaler that's jus-t in port after a three years' cruiee in the Arctic." "What's t'he matter with him?" "I don't know. Come and see if you do." Finishing mr whisky, I followed McLeod into one of the private wards. "I put him in here," eaM the interne, "because—well, because I thought it was worth while." In D, moment I waa deep in my examination, and, from the first glimpse I had of tihe patient as he tossed restlessly on his cot, I realised that lit was the case of my life-of the lives of a thousand men. He was a, young fellow—not over thirty, I am sure; though his hair, moustache and beard were snowy white. Hiø face wore a curious expression, which, though set in almost rigid lines, seemed to shift from time to t'.me in its interpretation. At one moment I read dazed astonishment, at another terror, at another awe, and yet again the look was one that, while it froze the blood in my veins, could be attributed to no sentiment with which I was familiar. The man was not what you could call delirious, and I am sore he was not insane, but it was ouiite evident, upon a very superficial examination, t'bat his nerves had received a shock that made him to all intents and pur- poses irresponsible. Beyond this, I could find no pathological condition. I have omitited as yet to mention one thing- a broad, deep ecar that stretched across hé. forehead from temple to temple, and seemed to have gone d.\)\yn to the frontal bone. It did not appear to be wholly the result of either a burn or a cut, L'hor h it showed characteristics of both. Perhaps it can best be described as such a scar as might have been left from the slash of a sword that had been heated redhot. For the rest it was quite evident that the wound wa-s at least six months old. and that it had healed very cleanly, considering how serious it must have been. I also took occasion to satisfy myself tha!t, tlhe skull had not been injured in the least. When I lhad finished my examination, I turned to McLeod. "A ease of profound shock to the nerve centres," I saidi, "with perhaps a oerebrallesion and, possibly, oonnedted with that scar. I will step in in the --aini and see what, more I can make "I d'on't fhink he'll be alive by morning," said the interne. "That's the reason I sent for you to-night—" i examined the man again and more carefulh. Tlit 11 I sa.id;- "Really, I see no ground for immediate apprehension." "Wait till one of the paroxysms comes on," replied McLeod. "Have you talked with him," I asked. "No," he said, with an odd emphasis, "but he's talked, and I've listened till I don't quite know Whett-her I'm sane or not." I Almost as my companion spoke the man on I the cot straightened himself out with every cord and muscle absolutely rigid. Hie eyes seemed staring from their sockets and he threw up his hands as if to ward off some impending blow. At the same moment his lips began to move, whie from them came words, hurried, yet die- ,connected, like the babbling of a child. "Gone—gone—yes, gone and dead. What's the use o' throw in. em overboard? They're frozen stiff enough an' they're more company. North; That's the way we're bound-me and the dead men; an* the pack an' the drift are dom' all itibe work—Say mister, mebbe that bewnit a good tin on the park an' the drift. Oh; yes, I know how to take reckon in.' Ye can't fool me. I'm further north now than any live man's been, an' I'm agoin'to the pole." His voice rose to a shriek as he uttered the last words. Then, after a brief silence, he resumed his babbling tone: "An open Polar eea. is it?— an' mebbe I don't know as how it's open—that's when ye get far enough to find it—get through th' ice wall that God's built. Ice feels a bit like fire, don't it?" He paused here, leered at us cunningly, and continued: "Mebbe ye don't think God built it. and mebbe again ye don't know why He done it. J Tfhe learnin' men don't know everything—they j dbn't, but I know more than all on 'em. Yes, an' more than the Bible folks either." At this point the patient began to mumble indistinctly and we had to bend close to catch his words. "Y&s, yes, there do be a open Polar eea— there do be one sure enough; an' I've been on it an' crossed it—me and the dead men when come ourt- o' the ice—an' I had to throw 'em overboard one by one. for they thawed out— that's what tlhey done in th' open Polar sea. Mebbe ye don't believe they thawed out there?" and he .raised his voice again, glaring at us cW.antly. "The mo"t natural thing in the world, my good maw." 6»id I soothingly, at the fame time placing my hand upon his forehead and exerting myself in a way which I have sometimes found to produce a semi-hypnotic effect on certain patients. It seemed to have an influence in the present case; for the man grew calmer almost immediately. and, hitching himself over nearer to the side of the oot, turned toward me an inquiring glance. Then, after a pause, he said in slower and quieter tones: 'In the beginilll' the stars revolved in a tholiform manner.' That's Diogenes Laertius. M-ebbe ye never read him?" To say that I was astonished at such an arpparent sign of erudition, would be putting it mildly; though I hardly imagined that the remark meant more than the disconnected wanderings of a mind that had run across more or less queer learning-a. not unusual thing among the labouring classes of the lowland Scotch, among whom I placed my patient. There shaill be no nigiht there'—do ye mind that?" he went on, still eyeing me closely and with anything but the look of J«iir<nn« sun. ) A shade of apparent disappointment crossed his face as he peered into what must have been the blankness of mine. Then, drawing huhself still closer, he said: "Mebbe ye never read th* Avista where it say a—look how I remember it now: '0 Maker 0' the material world, thou Holy One! What lights are there in the Vara which Yima. made?" Vara, I take it, bein* tlhe garden an' Yima a sort o' heathen Adam. An' here's what Aluno Mazda answered: 'There are uncreated lights an' created lights. There the sta.rs, the moon an' the sun, are only once » year seen to rise an' set. an' a year seems only a day.' There, sit, ain't I a memory for a seafarin' man?" and he fell back upon the cot and eyed me with a look of undisguised triumph. As for me, astonishment was still my con- trolling sensations, but through it all I began to imagine that I saw a gleam of light—strange, weird and inconceivable. As luck would have it, I happened to know that the Vista was the book that contained the ancient Iranian theology, though I had never been ambitious enough to try to examine it. My hand etill rested upon the patient's brow and perhaps thM prompted me to ask, casually: "How did you get that wound, my good m..n The trwnmiphanit look on his face faded into expression of unutterable awe. and I found myself shivering almost before he answered. "Th' angel o' the Lord." That answer decided me. The man was undoubtedly insane, and, as if to confirm my diagnosis, he burst out the next moment into another tirade of words. "Yell; througlh the ice wall—through an' through it, an' the Lord only knows why He let us through—me an* the dead men, only the dteadmeo. didn't matter. They couldn't eat c.)' three, but I could. an' landed clear an' free at the gate o' the garden an' I seen it all, with the flowers a growin' an' the trees an' the gold fruilt in the branches, an' then he COUle-" "Who?" I asked, breathless. "Th' angel, o' course; an' I heerd him call out like the thundier e.n' the fire was a-fia*hin I in his hand and then I felt it over me eyes an down I goes, oh! Ye don't know no other man, I row what's been slashed wi th sword o an anffel an' lived to tell o' it; say now, do ye, sir?"

REMARKABLE LONGEVITY IN SUFFOLK. The parishes of Purhaiy and Hacheston, Suffolk, appear to be blessed with their fill share of elderly people. The joint popula- tion of the two villages (says a "Telegraph correspondent) is just over 900. and at a treat recently given by the vicar (the Rev. J. F. Mather) there were found to be close upon sixty persons who had passed their three score years and ten. Moet of these are in good health, and not a few can still do an exre-Jent day's work. The aggregate ages of those invited amounted to 4.194 years —a period which, according to Biblical chro- nology, takes us back almost exactly to the time of the Deluge. Amongst these are eleven married couples one old pair are both in their eighty-eighth year, and hare a daughter who turned sixty-seven, and another have been married sixty years. I
