OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY MISUNDERSTOOD, Very long ago now does lit seem, and ffieasured by "Witt's definition: "How long "114L, live not years but actions tell"—it really is long a^ro g-ince in Nevada's largest twn„ a young man first met, upon Commercial Row, sweet-faced, starry-eyed girl, and fell ^sperately in love with her at first sight. Did ■W #^1 similarly towards him? Fosailly. ^tore probably, however, s-Iie turned and locked btick over her shoulder liecause she f-tlt the 'hteneity of his focussed attention upon herself; it -was surely strong enough to move any lenllitive person. That was in 1886, and he was a etranger in that mountain land, wandered from sunny, ^autiful California. No "words can express the deer) longing he had felt for two weeks to retum to his own bright Pacific shore. But on Meeting G S he beoame on the instant a native of the Silver State! After all-, he had but learnt the ^iversal truth that where the spirit of Words—Love!—is, there is the home, the native spot of all creatures tihat have recognised its sway. It was a month before fortuitous oirr-um- allowed him a nearer approach to more ^tiniate acquaintance with his—shall the word ^i»ir.Tty" be used? Soon after this he oalled *t the re&idenoe of the family, and the way was °lear to the cementing of one of those friend- *,ips of yea;rs, sudh as seldom ever end, but still "outetiioee do. For audit moaUu ibereaiter it, seemed, to him at last, that heaven had come upon earth. Strange how dark the once sunny Californian skies suddenly became when he was coined to go back to them tó enter a medical college in Oakland! I The two corresponded, and sweet were her ■nueh treasured letters, coming at short, yet to him far too lengthy nter-ais. Two years later, broken in health by studies too closely prosecuted—for had he not her for whom to 11 succeed? And what was bodily comfort, or even xiealth, with such an object? It could be regained, since he was to become, for her, a famous phycician. Two years later, then, he went to Santa Barbara to recover the lost health. Then to Arroyo Grande Hot Springs. From there he wrote what he could not longer keep back, and asked her to wait for him until he could, provide her a good home. Poor boy! Eleven weeks, but no answer. Then one day it came, hie own enclosed, to show that she was not in fault, as his had been sent by the Reno postmaster to tho dead-letter office at Washington. And in his loving heart he for- gave her-forgave even the cruel disappointment of her words: "Dear Friend,-l can never love any man enough to marry him. But I esteem you, and give you my sisterly affection, &c." "Man never is, but always to be blest." Ho had her photograph, a boudoir full-length, and that, after he ven-t to Ballard, he placed I where the first rays of the morning sun falling on it seemed to make it .smile a friendly greeting to hie waking eyes. He a/ooepted her eieterly affect-ion," for he loved her truly, and lived in hope. But time passed tundhope waned, though love did not. No, love lay like a holy spirit enshrined, even after the altar of his heart had become chaste with sepulchre, in the certitude that she would never be his he felt at last that his love was too great to permit asking her to sacrifice her freedom, even if she might I eventually yield. So he offered up his life's hope as a sacrifice of his deep love, resolved to walk alone. Yet he believed, he felt, that she loved him as he did her, though the letters still exchanged gave iiim no token. But he used to road them to adtear friend, a girl who unselfishly loved him, yet gave no sign. And she, loving him so truly, was steady in her sacrifice of e-elf, because she knew he loved the girl of the other I days. So fihe pointed out to him words, phrases, even sentences, that his dull eye,; I never dreamt could bear such construction, and said "My boy. I think—I oannct know—but I think Gr loves you, and now 'voly awaits your second request for her hand." But he would not make it. Too late! So many years had she known he waited for only one little sum to encourage him, and had not given it, plainly at least; so that now his heart had turned to the comforter, the unselfish girl who loved him, and not only his word but hw love had grone out to her, and been accepted. Letters still came from the other, and she read them with him, and pointed possibly hidden meanings, for as yet she of the north knew nothing of the new events. Every such letter aroused deep yearnings in him, and even mis- ffivinigs lest he and his new love might regret if he heeded not the older claims upon h :m. t But ever and ever something whispered: "Stand true to your rows of love!" and he did 80. Time paesed, aDd with it came a wedding. It was a happy union, one very deep. and pure, and true! It is not a year since a letter came from the love of other days, but it had no power to raise the old wrai th. It raised fond memories, and affection responded, but that was all. Yet he wrote, and told the event of later days, the first she had known of his marriage. Silence answered. Again he wrote, and then came, presently, a bitter, stinging reply; how it tore -his heart! Language could not express the anguish it caused. His only comfort was the knowledge that the writer had wholly misunder- stood his words, else she. so good a Christian, could not have so replied. It seemed she thouffht he was unhappy in his marriage, and 1 was abusing a hard fate. Only so cr.uld ho understand her wordis: "A mfin who can talk of the woman he has chosen for his wife as you, sir, have done is one whom I can but be sorry enough for myself that I have ev#r known him." There w^.s more, and even more severe; this must suffice our prying gaze into the affairs of others. He wonders if she will, some time, know how she has misjudged him, and be a ftttlo sorrowful. For sihe has bitterly mis- interpreted words he never dreamt could appear so to anyone, let alone to her he once so dearly loved. If she could but see into his heart—how I sweet, pure, and precious is the love he cherishee for the wife she supposes he does not care for—e, love only second to that he bears for his Master, Christ Jesus—then would she at last reverse her opinion and have a little regret! Perhaps she may, when the Eternal Duy has dawned! For "we shall know each other there." i

SIR WALTER FOSTER AND LAND…
SIR WALTER FOSTER AND LAND REFORM. Sir Walter Foster, addressing a crowded meet- ing of Liberals at Kidderminster on Tuesday night, said if Liberals made land reform the great question before the country this would re- unite the Liberal "Darty as no other question would, and would eend into fructifying channels millions of money now secured by landlords. They must insist that the tillers of the soil should not only have land to culti- vate, but decent houses to dwell in. The grand land monopoly m\Pt be broken down, and he wanted them to assist him in the crusade against the land laws, the most infamous laws which were tver conceived, and the next Liberal attack na'st ie on those laws, sweeping away the monopoly, and giving opportunities for the nation at large to participate in the benefits.

[ CARDIFF PILOTAGE REGULA-I…
[ CARDIFF PILOTAGE REGULA- TIONS. No port in the kingdom, probably, shows such a remarkable increase in the number of its licensed pilots during the last thirty years as Cardiff. Foa, some tiiiie (says the "Ship- ping World") after tie passing of the Bristol Channel Pilotage Act. in 1861, Cardiff pilots numbered no more than a ecore, whilst their boats were mere oockle-shelle as compared with t&e smart and speedy cutters of to-day. There are now 110 Channel and port pilots enrolled on the books of the Cardiff Pilotage Board, with about eighty single or partnership boats. Whilst vessels have increased in tonnage and fallen off in number, the yearly augmenta- tion in the ranks of the pilots has gone on. The bye-laws governing the Cardiff pilots have just been revised, and these new regula- tions have been sanctioned by the Board of Trnde and the Queen in Council. The alte- rations have evidently been designed to meet the case of a plethora of pilots, and to give each man. turn and turn about a better chance. But, so far as they deviate from those of 1861 and the amendments sanctioned bv Order in Council ia 1890. they are some- what drastic as asrainst the Chaanel pilot, and they call for close attention on the part of the shipowner and the master mariner. ;J .?
