OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY AWAKENED. Viola Riversley stood in the big drawing-room at Englefield Grange and gazed about her in bewilderment. Gone were the softly tinted wadls, the faded hangings, the well-worn carpet, and tapestry-covered chairs and sofas. All had been swept away to give place to a glaring paper, carpet of brilliant hues, and mirror* nvnumerabfle; while emerald green plush re- placed the quaint old tapestry. Her mother's youngest half-brother, Edward Perry, had lately come in for the property. Having made what the Americans would oall "his pile" in Australia, where he had married a ffirl far be- neath him in rank, he had on the death of his bachelor half-brother Claude come over to Eng. land and taken possession of The Grange. His wife was dead long since, but an only 0011, Mar- tnaduke, and two daughters, Heloise and Hono- ria, were very much alive, and delighted to wel- come their unknown cousin Viola in their midst. "Isn't it an improvement?" they exclaimed in a breath, pointing to the gorgeous surroundings. Poor Viola I The Grange had been like a second home to her, so often had she and her widowed mother stayed with Unole Claude, and she loved every nook and corner of the old place as it used to be before the so-callled "improvements" bad spoilt it. Still, it would not do to offend her cousins by expressing disapproval, 80 she murmured something about being very much changed since she had seen it last. "Changed!" exclaimed a loud voice at her J elbow-" "I should gather think it was indeed. Sou 11 soon see that for yourself, my dear niece, giving her a hearty kies of welcome. "The only place I have not altered is that dingy old West Wing, and as there are rooms and to spare without it we use that as a 6ort of lumiber-room for storing odds and ends." "Oh! I love the West Wing; may I go and see it again to-morrow?" cried the girl impul. lively, wondering if by chance she might find some tof her old favourites among the cdds and •nds. "Certainly, certainly, Viola, go just where you like; I want you to feel yourself at home here." She thanked him, wishing she could banish from her mind the feeling of curious wonderment as to how this burly, red-faced man could be the half-brother of aristocratic- looking Uncle Olaude and her refined delicate mother. The knowledge as to exactly who their grandfather had married the second time had been carefully kept from the younger mem- bers of the family, or ghe would not have been so surs>riMd. "You roust tiun-y up, lore," her uu»l» -e- marked, before she had satisfactorily settled in her own mind the vexed question nl Here- dity, "for we dine at seven sharp, ard >ou girls always take the deuce of a time tc get into your togs. By the way, if you're fond ef old places and things, youMl just suit my friend, Eugene Thesiger HeJoise," addressing his elder daughter, "see your couain site next our guest at dinner." "Oh 2 I shall be thankful if you ta'we Mr. Theeiger off my hands," Heloise said, as she shewed her cousin to her room. "Pa met him years ago, out in the bush. I don't quite know what he did, but Pa has been grateful to him ever since. and when he came in for the pro- perty the first thing he said was: "Now I can entertain my friend Thesiger in a style worthy of him." "It was nice of uncle not to "otget the past kindness," Viola remarked. "Oh! Pa's heart is always in the right place; 1 only wish his H's were as settled. He doesn t put them in exactly, but he is 80 afraid of drop- ping them that they get sounded too much. Honona and I were espseiaily told to be extra nice to Mr. Thesiger. and I do try, but be frightens me. He is so awfully polite and proper, and talks about things I've never heard of, as if I was (bound to know all about them. Honoria gave him up after the firet evening. ilIe asiked her if ehe liked Badminton. She said she had never tasted it; and felt awfully mad when site found out her mistake." Mindful of "seven o'olock sharp." Viol* de- scended in good time to the emerald plush drawing-room, and was promptly introduced by her unole to "Mr. Eugene Thesiger, an old friend, to whom I feel ever grateful, my dear." Mr. Thesiger, who waved aside the latter part of the sentence with a deprecatory gesture, was a Iif«tly -built, middle-aged man, with grizzled heir and moustache, and keen, deep set, grey eye*. Very much out of his element at The Grange under i-ta present regime, she suspected,, though he was untiring in cour- teous attentions to his host and the two girls. He looked distinctly relieved when Viola was assigned to him at dinner, and she found him anything but the lormidable companio» Heloise had led hor to expect. The next day, at Mr. Perry's request, .,lie introduced him to the West Wing, and thoy spent the morning pleasantly enough, turning over a big box of engravings which had been banished as being dull, stupid things; unearthing quaint portraits pronounced by the girls "too sgly for anything," and admiring the carved oaK furniture of whose Talue the present owner had, apparently no idea. "What a thousand pities to keep these trea- sures hidden away," Mr. Thesiger said. "They would euit the fctvle of the rooms far better than He stopped short with a comical little grimace. "What has been substituted for them," finished Viola. "It did give me a j nng when I came yesterday to see how everything was changed, and yet Uncle Edward is so good and kii d. I hate myself for feeling as I do." As the days went by she often wondered why it wm that Mr. Thesiger lingered on so long at The Grange. One evening, noticing Marmaduke's eyes fixed longingly on his pretty cousin, a» sho stood talkirg to Mr. Thesiger on the terrace, he laid his hand with a kindly touch on the young fellow's shoulder. "Look here, my lad," 'he said. "It's no use you trying to win that dainty little fairy for a wife- She's a Riversley to liei finger tips, for all she's so sweet and gracious, while you favour your poor mother's people: honest folk enough, but homely. Eugene Theeiger would suit Viola far better than you. Double her age, do you say ? Pshaw! That's nothing if they levo each other, and I fancy the little maiden cares for him more than she herself suspects.' That same night Viola was awakened by a I fearful unearthly shriek. Her eyes were smart- | ing, she could hardly breathe, and as she liur- ried on her clothes, feeling in a dazed, half- stupefied way that something was wrong, she noticed that the room was full of smoke. The next moment Mr. Thesiger'a vodse called to her not to lose an instant in escaping to the garden. The East Wing af the house was on fire, he explained, as lie hurried her along, and the woodwork of the old house was eo dry it was burning like tinder. Jn the garden, reigned a ecene of supreme confusion; men running hither and thither with ladders, some dragging out pictures and valuables from the rooms T.ot yet alight, others throwing water on the flames. Help from the 1 earest town was momentarily expected, but The Grange stood in a lonely part of the country, and the fire had got well hold before any alarm had been raised. Suddenly a cry arose among the servants that the housekeeper was missing. She slept in a room adj oining the West Wing, and, though she had been warned to escape, they feared the smoke must hal\-e stupefied her before the could get out. As yet the room appeared to be un- touched. though the flames were rushing to- ward it with fearful rapidity. The Perrys were busy the other side of the house, so knew nothing of the alarm. Viola, saw Mr. Thesiger spring up a ladder and disappear into the room. A moment after, dense volumes of smoke came rolling from the window, and a tongue of flame shot out. "They can't escape that way now, we must get at them from the other side," someone ex- claimed; end there was general stampede. She knew it would be utterly impossible to reach the room that way. In an instant the know- ledge of what Eugene Thesiger was to her s crane: to life. &Ave him she must. Covering her face with her hands she tried to recollect the exact position of the room. It opened into another she remembered and that other—thank God it was clear to her now. There was a slid- ing door in the further room that opened on to long flight of steps leading to an underground passage of the existence of which she war pro- bably alone aware. She called frantically for help, but no one heeded her, all being occupied on the other rside. The flames were gaining fast; there was not a second to lose; she must go herself. As she rushed along ghe stumbled over the missing housekeeper lying across the pathway in a dead faint. Snatching up a torn muslin curtain from amid the furniture scattered on the lawn, she soaked it in the pond, threw it over her head, and then sped on down the shrubbery to the old door which led to the pas-sage. It was hidden by overgrown ivy and a tangle on' bushes and creepers, but Viola had been there too often in her childhood to miss the way. Would the rusty hinges never turn? She pushed and pushed with the strength of desperation. At last it gave way with a. crash that went echoing along the vaulted passage. Up the slippery steps she rushed, stumbling in her haste, bruising herself against the sharp stones, till at last the top was reached. Then began an agonised search far the door. A feeble ray of early dawn shone through a oreviw in the rough hewn stone and aided her to find the spot. Oh! the blinding nmoke, the stifling air that swept towards her as she pushed on- wnrd. The hot boards swayed beneath her feet as phs rushed towards the second room, calling the man she had come to save. What looked like a gulf of flames separated them, but I by j lumping from one piece of board to another he got through, and reached her side at last, only just in time, for the flames had already scorched her. suid iiad causht firo. "Viola, my darling, you," he gasped. "Quick, this way," she cried, grasping his anil and dragging him towards the .«ta £ rca&c. Not till they were safe m the shrubbery did rhi- relax her speed. Then they turucd and looked at each other. Viola," he said, passionately, yor have paved my life at the riVk of your own, and—I would so gladly have died for you." Live for mo instead, Eugene," she whispered.
