OUR SHORT STORY
? -I OUR SHORT STORY i SOME TILLAGE EEPROEATES. A *01^ day had closed sullenly, with a i4 I gUsty wind blowing. It was still early eTftning, but old Squira Hastinpfs and ???i;.t! of his crouies had already assembled in »h r., Wonted places around the rusty box stove "Hi A~un)an s grocery. leather reminds me, the squire was ln his slow, ponderous way; but his cut «hort by & diemal, metallic came from the tavern araoes the Sa v h ^9'" 'aughed the old man, when the ^'tiQ 3^ ^i^l away. I think we'd ought to {feu. °'d Lardy <to grease his sign. It's to be an infernal nuisance." 8 him tv hang it on a, tree son:e- f'3Ut ln the wood«," dryly rjtraeeted Tru- hta dtA- 0t reiuark sent John Axtel!, a retired k "nnv?B8e hulk, into cue of his pro- t 8e lallghs. While he was still y4e Joe Buddleston, the local lumber «. j l*we in land ioined the group. •sv^j. Joeh is a« melancholy a liJ. • smilinjj, as soon slb ha oould "B 8' w? ^lue« ">a^ t'le I ever knew for harin' the squire, in his soberest j j Vfc111 let u a hlood vessel if you '-??? on that nonsense," commemed the *^4 be m hiø queer, piping voice, when he ilh-k heacd. t.i wag fo]lowed bv anathar aaii^ak of the sign, and then Ham Donaldson, the miller, rolled into the grocery, filling it with his cheer. He said in his most tantalising mRi ner: "Well, Bquilre, I understand you got it warmed to you ag'in at the 'lection the other day." The "you" meant the political party to which the squire belonged, and the ren<ark precipitated a long and, at times, acrimonious debate. It was well on towards Truman's usual closing up time when Ed. Parkhurst, fI. smartly- dressed young fellow, with a smooth, dull face, on which a dainty yellow moustache grew, came in. He stretched 'himself in an attitude of indiffsrence until there was a lull in tho debate, and then, rising slowly to a sitting posture and lazily yawning, remarked: "Well, I gueas the ol' man'll have to go." "What ol' man? Have to go where?" gTOwled Cady, still smarting from the wrangle. "'Why, Elder Buxton, o' course." answered Parkhurst, with a sneer, adding with a cack- ijing laugh, "who else oould it be ?" "To-night, I s'pose you know, or maybe you don't know, was prayer-meetin' night at the Congregational Ohurch. Well, the ol' ram and his wife they went to the meetin' h01lbe as usual, but there wa,'n't nobody there when they got there, uot even Deacon Bromley, who'a 'been lookin' after the clrurrih. senc-s Hod- Orane was tkken sick. "So the ol' man tho lit up the vestibule and rung the bell, and purty soon Aunt Mary did dons ehe eat tihere—tihe's who told me what ?- I'm tellin' yoll now Well, in a little while Jim Davis and his wife they got there. and there didn,'t nOlhody eke come. So the ol' man he wenffc on with the meetin' after waitin' awhile. anc] before it w:a over, so Aunt Mary said, the elder told 'em that if things didn't brighten 1.tp purty soon he guessed he'd have to leave Rodney next fall when his year's up. He said wllat troubled him was that the people didn't turn out to his meetin's any more as they used to. "It's heen nip and tuok to raise his salary, you know. for the last three or four years, and I don't think it can be raised ag'in. I, for of0. have put up my last dollar for him, &nd so ha- some other folks that I know. He's, had his dkN- and now he ought to git out and give somebody else a chance! That's my opinion- Joe I-Illddleton, rising to his feet, com- manded silence, with a gesture. His face wore its habitual benignant look, but it was pale and there waS a gleam in his eye. "See 1111rj, Ed. Parkhurst," he began in his usual calm manner. "I want tto eay a word to you about Ridor Buxton." "I don't know as I have to listen to you," snarled Parkhurst, reaching for his bat. "Dor*'4 You move from that counter till I'm done with you." Parkhurst lesfied against a show-case, and, with a notable grin on his face, feigned in- difference tc) the remarks that followed.. "I don't Va«t to get into an argument with you." Joe wcnt on. "You're a fairly good judgo of Worses and clothes, but wha.t you I know Cibüut preaching wouiidn't fill a book. I merely w"an^ to give you a few facts to rumi- nate on. "Roast hijn! Hfi deserves iti" called out the ia » napiog voice. the Squire, ia » napiog voice. "Elder Buxton, as you well know, Ed," Joe continued calmly, but with unmistakable empha- is, "has lived in Rodney for more than, twenty years. and during this time he has given himself steadily and unoomplainingly, body and soul, to the aid of our people, the poor and rieh alike, whatever their creed or lack of oreed. So I contend that it's for the community at large, and not for his congregation—especially such members of it as you—to say whether he shall go or stay. I "He is now an old man-too old' to make a chanige—and he is poor, and I don't believe the town will let its most venerable citizen suffer whatever his hCurch may do. At all events, I will pledge the support of a set of young men—the set of whidh I am proud to belong. Yes, I'H go a step further and say that we- the yoang men who have been called all sorts of hard names because they're a little uncon- ventional ill their religious convictions—we, I say, won't let you freeze the ould man out if that's the little game you and your clique are trying to play. We'll hire 'him to stay here if his congregation won't." "You're thu stuff, Joe!" called out Prudon in his shrill tenor, as the youag lumber dealer sat down. "We'll send you to the Legislature some day if you'll be a mugwump," remarked Donaldson. Parkhurst quietly slidi off the counter, and, without saying a word, but with a pitiful affec- tion of unconcern in his look and manner, walked out of the grocery. "Say, Joe, my subscription has always been ten dollare; I'll make it 25 dollars for next year," announced the Squire. "'Not'her 25 dollars here," rumbled Cady. "Excuse me a minute, gentlemen, I've got an idea," said Joe, rising and going over to Truma&'s desk. In a few moments be came back with a sheet of paper in his hand. and read aloud: — "Rev. Peter iBuxton—Dear Friend. For upwards of twenty years you have always been ready to share our troubles; we think it high time now that we should begin to share yours. We believe that your salary has heretofore been 500 dollars a year. We will see that it is 700 dollars for next year. By the way, old friend, could you not put a little less doctrine in your preaching?" "By to-morrow night I'll have this docu- ment, with a lot of names on it, in the elder's hands, and I won't call upon any of the Park- hurst set, either," said Joe, when they had all signed the paper, and, saying good-night to hia companions, he left the grocery. On the morning of the following Sabbath the service in the Rodney Congregational Church progressed to the singing of the second hymn, which the preacher lhad just read. There was a slight noise at the door, which opened from the vestibule into the audience room; then up the middle aisle marched (more t'han a dozen well-dressed, intelligent-looking young men, headed by Joe Huddieeton, They found seats in pews well up towards the pulpit. The rumbling old organ sounded a brief interlude, and the choir began on the fourth add last stanza. There was another noise, somewhat "ouder than the first, at the entrance. Then up the middle aisle started a second column of men, some middle-aged and grizzled, some with the whitened locks of age. At their head, dignified and erect, with his shiny black Prince Albert buttoned tightly about his tall, spare form, marched the ^»hite- haired, beardless Squire. Next to him shambled Cady, the blacksmith. At the proper point the Squire faced about, and in obedience to I a ceremonious wave of his hand hie followers hobbled noisily into pews opposite those occu- pied by the young men. Joe ?.nd the Squire happened to meet on the lawn in front of the church after the ser- vice was over. "Say, Joe," said the old man, "that was the all-firedest best sermon I've heard in five years." "Its about the only one, isnt it, Squire?" Joe laughed. "But. say, are you coming to church next Sunday?" "You bet!" .—.?..? ——
EXPLORATION IN NEW GUINEA,
EXPLORATION IN NEW GUINEA, According to a telegram from Sourabaya, in Java, Dr. Lauterbach, Dr. Keruting, and Herr Taprpenfoeck, who conducted an exploring expe., dition in the interior of New Guinea, returned to the coast at the end of October, all well. The expedition discovered, at the foot of the igres».+ Bismarck Mountain, a navigable stream of considerable size, which flows through a fruit- ful, thickly-.populated plain, well adapted for cultivation. This plain was expdored for a dis- tance of 200 miles. No previous explorer* had succeeded in finding a well-populated area in the interior of New Guinea, and the discovery is regarded as likely to be of the greatest impor- tance for the further colonisation of the German I Protectorate.

STEALING A CHINESE WIFE.
STEALING A CHINESE WIFE. As an illustration of the popular administra- tion of justice in China, the esse of a man that stole a farmer's wife at a place some 300 miles inland from Hankow is instructive. The thief sold the woman for 100 ounces of silver, which appears to be about the tariff in moun- tainous districts of China. He was caught by the husband of the woman and two other men, who carried him to a particular tree near a Buddhist monastery and strung him by the wrists, tied behind his baok, so that his body was bent forward and his toes barely touched the ground. In that position he was ham- mered with a large @!tone at the base of his spine and on his ankles. This was by way of pre- 1 minary t'o carrying him to the magistrate's yanien, where he was sentenced to decapita- tion. 0.- ?-
WORK FOR PRISONERS.
WORK FOR PRISONERS. The supervisors of Suffolk County uraol, in the United States, are credited with the inten- tion of effecting a considerable change in their system of management. The board seems to have observed with pain that the pri- soners were more or less afflicted with a spirit of aimui. Many and various were the expe- dients attributed to one of the meetings. "What's the matter with letting them crack stones for the roads?" queried one gentleman, and it was generally admitted that this was a method calcu- lated to keep "them" busy. But there was one stalwart to whom stone-cracking did not appeal as a form of amusement, and he is said to have suggested a course of exercise with dumb-bells and the wand. The proposal, how- ever, was looked upon as too revolutionary to be accepted lightly, and the board will crilve the question enrefud consideration. It is stated, however, on good authority, that the prisoners are according- to the scheme their hearty approval.

Mr. Lang, was hold- ing a revival meeting at Seward, Oklahoma, U.S.A., the other day, and in the course of an impassioned appeal declared that "all women who danoe are immoral." The congregation gave a wild shriek and "went at him." The preacher made a dive through a back. window, and started on the run for the railway-station, followed by the demonstrative congregation— men, women, and children. At the station be was beaten into insensibility "by two farmers and a number of women," and he was rescued by a Santa Fe train crew from a oommittee who weredevking ways and means to apply a tar poultice with feather spangles."
