----?---OUR SHORT STORY
-? OUR SHORT STORY A DIVIDED HOUSE. (ConMivued from Yesterday.) f Having carefully reconnoitred the ground, we I 4*cided to make a halt at the "bodega," and, at Uiiuit, to make the most of it an a restaurant. Riding down the road at a leisurely gait, we Halted with a courtesy to the "bodeguero," who had noticed UB approaching, and, feigning to pve our first attention to our horses, we got him to call a young "gallego" (Galician) to attend to them. We then requested a meal for our- selves, and without stipulation all to price, had him serre his entire bill of fare, consisting of fried meat, eggs, cheese, guava jelly, coffee, oraokers, aiud wiine, to which our appetites enabled us to do justice. While we were eating, the loquacious bodeguero Tolunteered all the information that I desired regarding affairs in the district, where, according to his statement, Everything was quiet and certain to remain to, since Marti's death had brought the rebellion to an end. "Where are you going ?" he finally inquired. "To Camaguey after cattle," Pablo readily plied, as he picked up the lasso which he.liad laid aside, and with this we arose from the table. Quite satisfied with this information, the bodeguero made out the reckoning for his fare, nd while I was oounting out the money on bar I notioed in the motley material of his 'tock-m-trada a "retado," or old-fashioned double-barrelled shotgun, and it struck me that trnxdttjtcove handy as ajoart of our equipment. "My friend," I said, "how much will you take for that imitation of a gun?" "That isn't for sale," he replied sharply. "I keep that for uae in case of- "Then," I exclaimed, as I seized the piece, "I take possession of it in the name of Cuba Libre. And now, bring me all your powder a,l,d shot." Trembling with fright, the fellow obeyed with a murmur. While my two companions were helping themselves to as much ammunition as we could see way to carry, I reassured the Spaniard iby handing him three "centimes," as five-dollar gold pieces are called in Cuba. "Now, hold your tongue," I warned him. "B" silent as you value your life," and with this I mounted, and with my companions left the astonished Spaniard standing in the road. We rode leisurely down the road to the first turn, and then speeded our horses for some miles slong the road; then, leaving it, we made our WAY forward through the open forest. At nightfall we halted in the woods and got tready for a eight's rest. While gathering material for a bed of forest leaves, Pablo sud- denly exclaimed in a low voice; "Sh-sh! Some one is coming." I listened attentively, but could distinguish nobhing, but Pablo added after a moment: "There are only a few of them, and they are yet pretty far away." Though I strained every sense, I could make out nothing of what Pablo so thoroughly per- ceived, but I was øuffiaiently well acquainted .?=- with the guejiro's peculiar keenness of per- ception to accept his assurances without ques- tion. That my confidence was fully justified was soon proved. A quarter of an hour later we saw from our hiding place in the glade four armed men pass up the road. They were a detachment of the mounted civil guard, "guar- dias civiles," and were, quite likely, in search of us. "If you will allow," Pablo whispered to me, "1 will go and find out what these fellows are about." I readily consented, and without the sound cf a football the shrewd mulatto slipped away, gliding through the forest like a snake, and was I soon lost to sight. Over an hour elapsed while we were wait- ing lii* return and', we were just beginning to feel uneasy about him, when, suddenly, and without sign of his coming, I saw him before me. "They are at a bogeda about a league from here," he said as he made his appearance. "I guess they will take a big supper, with lots of wine and brandy, and then they will fall asleep." "Are you sure of that?" I asked. "I know they've started drinking already," Was his conclusive answer. "Let ua go after them," I ordered, and found my little army quick to obey. Leaving our horses we started for the bodega, guided by the mulatto: and as we approached the place we ea.w the guards' horses under the "colzardisso' or horse shed, quietly feeding. Through a small window Wo could see the II interior of the house, dimfly lighted by two oil lamps; and in the jumbled din that came from the room we couOd make out the round of loud talking over a of dominoes, and the clatter of dishes on a talble. Nothing* prevented m compd«rts surprise (of the party in the bodega except a sentry who had been posted out on the roadway. "I'll take care of him," said Pablo, a* he glided forward to the bushy edge of the road, his lasso ready in his hand. Quiok as a flash he threw it over his victim, and, with a dexterous pull, he had the man sprawling on the ground before he could utter a sound. Running up to him, we loosened the noose around his neck as we warned him to make no resistance, or we would kiH him, and then we quickly 'bound him hand and foot. When this was done, Antonio took possession of the new Remington rifle which the guard had dropped. Meanwhile the hubbub in the house was in- croosedt by a peal of boisterous laughter. and a, surprise of its oocupants made easier. Approaching the door together we suddenly burst into the room, shouting "Cuba Libre Surrender or die!" The effect was like thELA of an exploding bomb. The three guards, whose guns were stacked :n the room near the door, and the bodeguero, who was playing dominoes with them, almost upset the table, as they suddJenly arose, but Antonio had them covered With the Remington, and before Pablo and I could take up the other rifles the guards had already given up, two of them dropping to the door next to the overturned bench on which they had sat. While Antonio and I oovered the group with our arms, Pablo very quickly started in to pinion our prisoners—Ml operation that he had scarcely begun when it was our turn to be surprised. "Viva. Cuba Libre!" came a shout from behind the bar of the tavern, and there, in a corner where we ,had not perceived him before, was a stout, swarthy young fellow, who assured us in a few hurried words that he was in full sympathy with our cause, and gave immediate proof of his spirit by getting some rope from a new roll oa ft shelf and! helping Paibio to tie UP tha ?-?-- Spaniards. As to the bodegueuro, there was no reed of such precaution. He had almost fainted through fright, and was too limp and weak to make any resistance if he would. Keeping Pablo and my new recruit to yuard the bodega I sent Antonio back after our horses. In lees than half an hour lie was back, and we then prepared to leave. The soldiers watched our movements with every sign of intense anxiety; they expected nothing less than to have their throats cut, but I reassured them of their lives. "The Cuban Republic is not bloodthirsty, like your Spanish Monarchy. You may have your lives, though I know that we would have nothing to expect from you I ut death." It was well towards midnight when we rode away, leaving the niruoned guards in the Lodega, one of them snoring in a drunken sleep. My army now consisted of three, instead of two, and I felt that my new acquisition waa a fellow to be trusted equally with the others. We had, besides our relay of horses, an equipment of arms and munitions comprising five guns, five revolvers, one machete, four sabres, and 140 cartridges, nearly all of it the booty of our first victory. SbiH eastward we kept oaf way and soon plunged into the "manu-gua." After a two hours' ride, at the top of a ridge which he had been ascendi^ and when the day star was set- ting in the western sky to make way for the not distant, dawn, I ordered the bodeguero to dis- mount and get himself bock to his abandoned bodega and the Spaniards whom he had left in their helplessness. I calculated that it would be well on in the morning before he would be there to release them. by which time we would have put ourselves beyond the reaoh of any pos- sible pursuit. In fact, we were nearer our goal than I imagined. When some months later my force had in. increased to over two hundred, all fairly well equipped and mounted, I had the -pleasure of reporting personally to General Gomez and re- counting to him our droll experience at the bodega. One of his aides was listening to my recital, and he suddenly interrupted me with: "Hold on I Read this. Here you have the official report of your reconnoitre," smilingly handing me a newspaper as he spoke. Hur- riedly I read the artiole which he indicated. It was quite Interesting and contained the follow- ing stirring information. "A numerous band of insurgent^, well armed and equipped, organised at on May 24, and started on a raid through the district. The four eivil guards stationed at—■— were attacked by the bandits, and after holding their ground for over an hour, agcinst more than ten times their number, the soldiers re- treated to the shelter of Senor 's bodega, on the high road near where they held the rebels at bay until their ammunition was exhausted. They then surrendered on con- dition of being allowed to retire without their arms. The rebels had one of their number killed, one mortally and several others more or leas seriously wounded. The one killed was buitied by the rebels on the spot, and the wounded were corned away by them." The trtory was so comically absurd thÐft I couldn't help laughing heartily over the print, but I afterwards became so well accustomed to that soft of thing to not more than smile at it. I have had, since that experience, many another of grafter moment, and have never failed to observe with amasment how Spanish official lies trig out the phantasy of a Spanish triumph from the reality of a Cuban victory. A WELSH LADY CONVERT TO ROMAN…
A WELSH LADY CONVERT TO ROMAN CATHOLICISM I Various rumours have prevailed respecting the secession from the Protestant Church of a lady well knows in Glamorgan society, but the facts of the case have not been thoroughly stated. It may now be accepted as autlisntic that Mrs. William Crawshay, the wife of the well-known ironmaster of Cyfarthfa, has openly embraced tho Roman Catholic faith. She was received into the Church about ten dfy* since at Belmont, Hereford. Mrs. Crawshay belongs to an old Cardiff fajnily, the Woods, at one time conspicuous in the banking interests of Cardiff. An ancestor was governor of Colchester during the Civil Wars, and after itAli capture by Ireton was killed, entailing infamy upon the Puritan general for a deed as merciless as it WAS im- politic. MM. Crawshay remained at Cyfarthfa Castle for some time after the death of Mr. Robert Crawshay and the retirement of Mrs. Rose Mary Crawshay, but was never thoroughly identified with the social life of the Iron Metropolis, and since the retirement of the family to Cavershan) Park there has been almost a comnlete sunderaacot
