? OUR SHORT STORY .
? OUR SHORT STORY AN AGED RATTLESNAKE CHARMEB. If Kipling should visit Collierstawn, Va., he I "'ould find Wolf-child grown old and wizened. Thoma* Hostetter is his name, and his age absolutely uncertain. Ho thinks he is about I 85 yeara old. The wrinkles on his bronzed I face rival in number and intricacy those of Loti's mummy. His eyes are small, deep-set, and pregnant with a wild-wood prescience very alien to the wisdoms of civilised life. He I lives, or, perhaps, If&ouid say "has growed." I ""mewhere amid the or age and bushes several lniles to the north of here. He suddenly appeared before me the other Qierninjr with a w«ll-fingcred and time-worn fiddle slung over his shoulder and a huge I liuhinoor of an alum diamond in his hand. He 8a.id he paid £ 2 10a. for his Stradivarius ever "0 nisiny years ago in Lexington, Ky. He seemed so confident of the great value of the gem, which only etorn necessity compelled hitn to sacrifice for 5s., that I bought it in the Vague hope of drawing him out. His wife was dead. His nine children were a.11 married or scatterefl. He WIRS but too plainly a searod and yallow leaf whiilcd any ^hither on the rutkloss storm of time. H« bad never been to any city, and was | Absolutely unvefsod in knowledge of any sort hut cat—fchat jti Uto lite of tikd deeip w*xxl,, with its multitudinous silent denizens. Their habits and language were an open book to him, whose well-thumbed pages he had turned so often that he now knew the whole volume by heart.. He had innumerable little packages of rattle- snakes' rattles stuck into every conceivable re-' ceptacle of his clothing. One had 25 rattles on it. From all I could gather, the "rattlers" had come to regard him without animosity. He had acquired an insight into their reptile tongue, and when be did not see them with his old, worn-out eyes be just sat down on a log and inarticulately beguiled those "Sinfires" out of the nooks aud crannies to his feet. He had no Hindoo "twm-tum" with which to charm his snake-kin, and apparently exerted no influence upon then* other than that which close sanguinity always 'begets. Doubtless they had come to regard him much in the light of a soraly overgrown and distorted brother. I catru: across him one dewy morning a day or so later buried in the heather and bracken up the valley, scated crosswise on a log, with a six-and-a-half-foot death-dealer coiled con- tentedly at his feet. Not until I appeared on the eoene did thai flickering toogue protrude or those angry eyes glitter. T%e two »eemed to be simply during a quiet wood-talk, as the clawish hand of the man stroked down the diamond patches on Death's mottled back. Hostetter apparently did not think this strange seance at all out of the common. He ha<l known rattlesnakes and blacksnakes and mocassins so long and so intimately that any lese sociability between him and his lower animal brothers would have been to his mind hugely inconsistent. Indeed, so powerful was his influence over the Coiled Hate at his feet that a little further endearment even reconciled the snake to my undemonstrative presence at a seasonable dis- tance. There I sat down and formed the only completely human element of a strange com- pany. Hostetter is widely versed in snake-lore. When in the woods at night he always sleeps on a convenient fallen tree, and it is no unusual thing, for him to wake up in the morning and find a poisonous snake slumbering sweetly between his legs or warmed into deep sleep on his body. He told me that the blacksnakes in the moun- tain meadows were actually in the habit of coiling themselves round the legs of the cows and milking them. Their power of suction on the teats is so great that when the milk bag is emptied they cause blood to exude from its walls, so setting up a sort of chronic exudation of bloody serum which tinges the milk and joakes it necessary to confine the cows in a stable until the diseased lining membrane of the milk bag is healed. He said that the cows actually grow fond of this unnatural milking, and come to the same spot in the field eaoh day at tiu mme j hour and "low" for the snake. As I have frequently heard such stories in this vicinity, I cannot but consider his recital as confirmation absolute of the strange fact. I told him that I would like to test still further his twin ibrothership with the wood creatures, and so at a word from me he uttered an inarticulate sound midway between a sob and a groan, which sent the snake into the bushes in a lightning vision of horror and speckled colour and sinuous grace. "Let me see you fetch a squirrel into your lap," I said. He sat down on the spreading roots of a pme tree and 'beckoned me into hiding. Then he gave utterance to a subdued chorus of "chirrups" and "squeaks" in minor keys, and almost before I had heard his seduc- tions the silent alleys of the woods were filled with the patterings of noiseless feet, and my Mowgli was the still centre of a cluster of bushy brown and gray tails, lined with white and touched with dull flame. I wonder what. they thought he was as they raced up and down the hollows of his scraggy legs and arms, smelled at the mouths of his bulging pockets and squinted in amaze at the slow smoke of his pipe. Again, with an expression half inarticulate, half gesture, he dismissed the tiny, dainty throng, and we strolled still farther into the rocky thickets. "Can you call the wild turkeys, Hostetter?" I said. He paid no attention to my implied scepticism, but simply seated himself again with his back to a tree, and I wandered off into the deep shadows. Scarcely was I hidden before a moat forwl- like "gobble-gobble" startled me, and then, after five minutes' silence, the same confident notes were repeated. A twig snapped, and through the window of leaves the beady-eyes of a wild turkey peered, with hanging comb and one foot lifted. The very acutest senses of the bird were directed towards my hiding place. Hostetter, if not turkey to it, was at least simply a detail of the wood-tree, or bush, or what not. Again the same cooing, low "gobble-gobble" and the leaves divided and the stately bird strutted right up beside Mowgli and stared into his wizened face. I needed no further evidence of the fineness of this woodcraft and creature relationship.
MR. AND MRS. KENDAL.
MR. AND MRS. KENDAL. MRS. KENDAL'S PREVIOUS VISIT TO SWANSEA. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings Mr. and Mrs. Kendal were visitors to Swansea. They appeared nightly in some of the most attractive pieces at the Albert-hall (Mr. Evans' opera house). and all the elite of the district attended. On Saturday night there was scarcely standing room to be had. In connec- tion with this visit, we may mention that our Swansea representative took pains to ascertain whether Mrs. Kendal's visit as a child was to Swansea or Cardiff. Mr. Grwyn Brader, in the course of a conversation with the lady, came to a thorough understanding with her on this point, it being, of course, perfectly clear that no other town could have been referred to. She had started she did not visit any other town, and it is known that she visited Swansea. The music shop she referred to was, of course, that af Brader and Sons, Wind-street.

CARDIFF RADICALS AND THE UNEMPLOYED.
CARDIFF RADICALS AND THE UNEMPLOYED. The subject for the usual \^e>kly debate at the offices of the Cardiff Liberal Association on Saturday was "The Unemployed Problem." Mr. David Davies presided over a small pather- r in??.—Councillor J- J. Buist delivered an address, in which he propounded causes and remedies for the problem. He urged the necessity of labour bureaus for all towns, hy means of wh' labour c-ould be engaged by employers wiw. ut trouble, and said he would much rather see a certain part of the rates spent on such an object than for the department whose duty it is to bring each man to account who doos not support his parents who are chargeable to the union. Councillor Buist also spoke strongly in favour of the various corpora- tion departments giving preference to those men out of work who had been long resident in the town. This, he was sorry to say, was not done at present in Cardiff as much as it might be.Short speeches were delivered by Councillor J. Jenkins and Messrs. Bree, Collier, Allgood, and others, and the meeting closed by the passing of a vote of thanks to Councillor Buist for his address.

PENSIONS FOR INTERMEDIATE…
PENSIONS FOR INTER- MEDIATE SCHOOL TEACHERS A well-attended meeting of head and assis- tant masters and mistresses of the county schools of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire was held on Saturday afternoon at the Cardiff Inter- mediate School for Girls. Miss Collin, head- mistress of the last-named school, was elected to the chair, and Mr. W. Jenkyn Thotnas, M.A., Aberdare, was deputed to act as secre- tary. The object of the meeting was to discuss the. following resolution, passed ou the motion of Mr. Mansel Franklen by the Central Welsh Board at a recent meeting:—"That the execu- tive committee be instructed to endeavour to arrange with the Education Department that any scheme of pensions for elementary teachers that the department may lay before Parlia- ment shall include intermediate school teachers." The feeling of the meeting was very strong against the proposal. It was pointed out that the Welsh intermediate schools had been organised without any reference to the Education Department, and that it was. therefore, extremely improbable that it would ever consent to include them in any proposals for pensions which it might lay before Parlia- ment. Even if it did consent to do so, the price of its consent would be some measure of control over the intermediate schools, against which everyone connected with secondary edu- cation would protest most vigorously. It was further pointed out that the recommendations of the Royal Commission which inquired into the question, UJK-JI which any legislation deal- ing with pensions would be based, were abso- lutely unsatisfactory in every way. After some discussion the following resolution was on the motion of Mr. T. W. Phillips, B.A., Newport, seconded by Mr. R. W. Jones, B.A., Gelligaer, unanimously passed: "That this meeting expresses strong disapproval of the proposal to approach the Education Depart- ment with reference to pensions for teachers ilu intermediate schools. '—Mr. Phillips ako proposed, and Miss Evans (Pon.typridd) seoemded, "That the following be submitted for the consideration of the local associations of assistant masters and mistresses: 'That the i Central Welsh Bioaxd be asked to communicate with the county governing bodies with a view to foiming pension schemes for all the counties of Wales; and that the attention of the board be directed to the desirability of making every sa-fervu'd to get the Welsh system amalgamated Tv-th any English system which may come into operation in the organisation of English secondary education.'—This motion also was, after some discussion, passed.
