Yy ESTERN "fyfAIL A LMANAC AND YEAR BOOK FOR 1897, ALMANAC, ENCYCLOPEDIA, > TN nUE AND DICTIONARY ) 1 U The following are a few short notices of this very useful book:— "Among these 550 pages (the price is one shilling) there ie scarcely one that does not contain something interesting or instructive, from the laws of card games to the statistics of the armies and navies of Europe, from a table of precedence to a universal chronology. The volume is copiously illustrated with portraits, diagrams, and maps."—The "Tl1tlC8." "A remarkable shillingsworth. Described as a rade mecum for readers of all classes, it fairly earns this title, for in it are to be found references not only to the great events and discoveries of past ages, but to those of recent date. Matters historic, scientific, and political are dealt with, and in the miscellaneous sec- tion the most varied subjects are treated of in in- teresting, chatty fashion, while at the close of the volume readers will find an English dictionary, which for conciseness and lucidity of definition would take a lot of beating."—"Daily Telegraph." "A miracle of inclusiveness. All the usual informa- tion concerning public matters is given, including a full Parliamentary list. Board of Trade returns, statis- tics of aport, &e., &c."—"Academy." "A really wonderful tripartite volume, made up of an almanack, a compendium of facts and figures, and a dictionary. Here are a Whi taker, a pocket Webster, and a latter-day encyclopedist rolled into cue and given to the masses agog for information at the price of a shilling. The survey of the five or six hundred pages could not well be more comprehensive. A num- ber of pages, we notice, are devoted to annate of the stage. Pictures, maps, and ingenious diagrams add to the interest and utility of a storehouse of informa- tion unrivalled at the price of admission."—"Stage." "A wonderful shillingswarth. It is not only an almanack, but a dictionary and encyclopedia rolled into one, and deserves to take a front place among year books. Its programme was ambitious, namely, to deal with practically everything, but it has been carried out with remarkable success. It is a thoroughly useful office companion, while the casual reader could not fail to find plenty to interest in its budget of miscellaneous information which the volume containe." -"SportJsman." "A capital shillingsworth. It is pleasant to recog- nise the enterprise and evident prosperity of 9, con- temporary has at no time been in any disagree- able sense a rival throughout the half century which has seen the births and deaths of so many journals." —"Weekly Times and Echo." "A storehouse of, varied and up-to-date information, historic. scientific, and political, fomling a vade mecuin for readers of all classes."—"Westminster Gazette." "No one nowadays can afford to be without ail almanack, and that supplied by our enterprising con- temporary is a model of what a book of reference of this kind should be—clearly printed and full of useful information, with all superfluities carefully weeded out. "A grand shillingsworth."—"Newsagent." 1OUR SHORT STORY .
OUR SHORT STORY FROM HESt STANDPOINT. Wahad not been excyhaTiging confidences-to tell the truth, it is not within my nature to be I confidential—but I had been listening very sym- pathetically to her "histories of the heart." "You know," she said, enthusiastically, "he ■5* the very soul of honour, and respects women above all things." "I am sure that he is," I replied, "or yow would not ihink of liking him." She smiled sweetly and gave me a bright little nod of thanks for the implied compli- ment. She was a very pretty girl, with a goft, clear, dark complexion, and delicately arching brows. There was an expression of natural sweetness in her Ibright hazel eyes, and she carried her proud liitble beeurled head with grace and spirit. "And his manners are just perfect, everyone fays so. Don't you think so? And hasn't he got a firm mouth ? I like a miam with a firm mouth. Don't you ?" ? I tried to express by word and tone that I considered the gentleman in question the owner oi the most perfect manners and the firmest mouth on record. She listened with great gravity to-, my issuances in his favour; then raised her hand ttid shook it in the lamplight until the diamond ..Ii her third finger gave forth a dozen jets of parkliag colour. "Aren't diamonds lovely things T" eihe cried. <rNot half as lovely a-s the giver, I hope." "Oh, t Mod, aha.L-inff fipiiljj and looking up at me wffth an arcfi expression. "Did I ever tell you about our first meeting ? No ? Well, this is how it was. I had been at Boston at the Conservatoire, all winter. Well, while I waa away he began to board at home. Mamma and everyone ait. home used to write to itre about him-how nice he was and all that. But I didn't, think much about it, you know, I was so busy. Child, I had to practise seven mortal hours every day! Don't you know it nearly killed me?" I expressed my deepest sympathy, and she continued: "Well, I came home. He was not there at first. He was in New York, I believe; but the whole family were saying nice things about him. But they consoled me by telling me there was no chance for me—that he was just crazy over Mary Lou Young—that people said they were going to mairry, and all that kind of thing. I just laughed, and said I hoped it wouldn't break my heart quite if he did marry Mary Lou; I didn't believe I was going to like their Mr. Morton anyway. One morning mamma; said to me, Cecile, I want you to take off that unbecoming wrapper and crimp your hair. You look a sight, and Mr. Morton is in the house, and there is no telling when he will put in his appearance in the sitting room.' Oh, I don't WlIIIlt to, maim a,' I said. It's so lovely to be at home, and dress as you please and do as you please.' "So I kept sitting there _1. until almost eleven. Then I felt kind of hungry, and I went down to the dining-room to find a lunch. Child, I hadn't more than got. into the dining-room when I henrd sombody say, Mrs. Harper, can I get a little lunch? 1 am awfully hungry.' Then I heard mamma say, 'Certainly, Mr. Morton; go into the dining-room, and I will have the servant bring you something.' I was in for it! He was coming, amd there was no way for me to get out. So I just popped in the closet. I tell you I was a sight -my hair all about my face, and my wrapper as faded and ugly as could be. Well, he sat down at the table, and I kept as still as could be. Things went on pretty well until 'he rose from his chair, and just as he got opposite to it, and I was breathing a sigh of relief, it popped open, and I fell into his arms. You may just know how I felt! I can't tell you to this day how I got out of that room. He laughs sometimes now, and says he is sure I have a pair of wings hidden about me some- where, for I certainly flew that day. I didn't see him any more much for three or four days. He was going to see Mary Lou nearly every night then. But on Sunday even- ing my brother was going out to call oil a girl, and he stopped' n the parlour for me to pin a flower in his coat- Well, as I was arranging it who should come in hut Mr. Morton, and it wa-sn't anything but courtesy to pin one on for him too—don't you think so?" "Certainly," I said. "After that, somehow or another, he began to go to see Mary Lou less and leas, and began to pay me attention. "I was awfully sorry about it, you know. Y ju see. Mary Lou is this kinri ofjriri. She's nirui and bright, and all that, but she never has any beaux. I don't know why, but the boys don't seem to like her. So Mr. Morton was her first real beau, and s'<. Aas awfully proud cf him, you see. "But the funny part about it was that Mary Lou came to see me when I first came home, and I said to her: 'Mary Lou, I hear you have an awfully nice beau. You'd better look out— I'm going1 to cut you out of him,' never think- i. you know, how things would turn out. "Well, Mr. Morton began to talk to me about Mary Lou. He said fpeople said that he was in love with Mary Lou, lut he wasn't. That they had talked to him so n. n:-h about it that he did think for a while he was, but he was quite sure now he wasn't. "I sympathised with him all the time in his trouble, but at the saBM tiiua I kept insisting on his going to see Mary Lou. But it didn't do any good, and at last he just stopped alto- gether." "I am afraid Miss Mary Lou considers you her mortal enemy," I remarked. "Yes, she's awfully cold to me. and I heard that she said some very unkind things about me; but I couldn't help it, could I?" "I fancy it is he who coifdii't help it," I said, with a smile. I "He says he never did make real love to her in his life—and he's awfully nice. Don't you think we suit each other?" "Admirably," I replied. She tripped lightly from the room, and down the stairs into the parlour whore he was await- ing her. 1 But alas. for poor Mary Lou! I should lilce to hear her side of the question. I

ILIGHT ON THE RONTGEN RAYS.
I LIGHT ON THE RONTGEN RAYS. SOME DISTINGUISHED HANDS. Professor Silvanus P. Thompson devoted the last of his series of fascinating lectures on "Light Visible and invisible" (given on Satur- day night to a crowded audience at the Royal Institution) to a consideration of the rays dis- covered by Professor Rontgen. He said that photographic journals and other unscientific prints had cir-ikU>d a good many fabulous stories about these rays, and had spoken of a new photography. Now, Professor Rontgen, of course, had said nothing of the sort. While I experimenting with a Crooke's tube he had discovered rays which penetrated substances usually known as opaque- He had not said one word about photography, but, of course, the shadows casl- by the light could be made to fall on an ordinary dry plate and be then developed in the usual way. Observe, it was the old photography; that which wa., new was the id ad of iigbt. One of the out- conies of the X rays was the discovery that some things were more transparent than others. Imitation diamonds were not so transparent as the real gem; and the lec- turer demonstrator1, this by means of a sham diamond, a Cape .me, and a Golcoada c'ia- inoiul, which were subjected to the rays. lie further mentioned that some diamonds 'aid other pieciouG stones would shine in the dark after being subjected to strong light. He operated on a ring of Dr. Gladstone's, and two diamonds out of five gave off a bright phosphorescence. Of course, the X rays could not have beer discovered without the Crooke's tube, and in connection with what were known as the kathode rays, those re- sulting from a sort of back discharge of the electric current went passing out of the tube. Professor Fleming kac! just made some re- inarkable experiments. A metal cross fixed up ia iba tube tags » slucLor ojw, inarkable experiments. A metal cross fixed up ia tba tube tags a LM,&e slucLor tU; gas end, but immediately a magnet was brought I near the shad o r, would get small, a second cross appearing at the same time, and as the I second shadow was reduced by the approach of the magnet a third shadow of the cross was noticed. This wat a most curious thing, and at present unexplained. In 1891 Professor Lenard worked hard to get these kathode rays to pass from the glass into the air, and he found that a piece of metal foil would bring them out, but Professor Rontgen, taking up the subject at this point, stumbled upon the marvellous pronerties of this new light. He (the lecturer) liad recently had occasion to observe the action of some internal rays which were certainly not the Rontgen ones. Evidently there was something else that they did not yet completely under stand. Hands of some children in the audience were photo- graphed, then developed, and subsequently thrown upon the screen. Lord Kelvin's hand was shown amid applause, the lecturer remarking that the diamonds in the ring were evidently real as they stood the test already mentioned. Both Lord Salisbury's and Lord Rayieigh's hands exhibited points of similarity, and that of Sir R. Webster re- vealed the existence of two small shot which had remained in the flesh ever since a gun accident that occun-ed to the Attoraey- goneral. An Egyptian mummy subjected to the rays w:<s seen to be that of a young woman. In conclusion, the lecturer said there were sights and sounds not for our eyes and ears. The universe was full of vibrations, of which we had not the slightest suspicion.

SAD INCIDENT IN CHURCH.r
SAD INCIDENT IN CHURCH. r A very sad incidtnt occurred in Free St. Cuth- I bert's Church, Edinburgh, on Sunday forenoon. While the Rev. Robert Forrest, the minister of the congregation, and successor to the late Rev. Sir Henrv Wellwood Moneriejf, was in the middle of his sermon he suddenly stopped, and, saying he felt weak, but that with a short rest he might revive, he gave out a hymn to lie sung. He retired to the vestry, whither Dr. Watson, who was one of the congregation, accompanied him. Mr. Forrest was able to return to the pulpit, and, though evidently labouring under great distress, he concluded the service in an abridged form and pronounced the benediction. When the congregation had dis- persed he was driven home. The ailment was paralysis. During the afternoon it became more pronounced, and before many hours he haD lost the power of speech and the faculties of hi" nght side. The afternoon service was taken bv the Rev. Dr. J. G. Cunningham, of Queen. street Free Church, who feelingly intimated the condition of their clergyman to the congrega- tion.

WHO IS TO SUCCEED MR. BAYARD- Many names ha-ve already been mentioned in connection with the American Ambassadorship, soon to be vacant in London- The best known on this side is t4t of Mr. Chaamcev Depew. No doubt is felt among Mr. Depew's friends that he can if he likes have the refusal of an Ambassadorship. The pointt seems to be whether the London Embassy would be offered to him, and, moreover, whether Mr. Depew thinks the time has arrived when 'he might retire from active com- merce. According to the "London American," merce. According to the "London American," Mr. Bayard'* successor will proba-hlv be Mr. Horace Porter, who has had a military esrwr. BACK TO PETiAL SERVITUDE
BACK TO PETiAL SERVITUDE BEMASKABLE DYNAMITE CASE. On Saturday Joseph Beil, aged 41, mason, and formerly a ooal miner, was brought- before the county magistrates at Carlisle charged, that he, being a cicket-of-leave man. had changed his residence on Januaiy 2 without notifying the same to the police; also with carrying firearms, namc.v, a six-chambered revolver, fully loaded, with intent to murder. The circumstances of the case are somewhat remarkable. In the year 1882 the prisoner was tried at Cumberland Assizes (before Mr. Justice Day) on a charge of feloniously attempting to murder his brother, John BelL and his sister-in-law, Martha. Bell. by dyna- mite or tonite, at Dalston. near Carlisle. It was proved that the prisoner had a grudge against his sister-in-law and her husband, for some fancied wrong, and had used threats towards them. On June 20, 1382, he had gone to Dalston, carrying with him a cart- ridge containing tonite oi dynamite, which he had obtained at a tunnel at Birkenhead, in which he had been working. Proceeding to the building in which his brother and sister- in-law lived, he mistook for their bedroom one occupied by some people named Brown, and threw a tonite cartridge in at the win- dow. The occupant of the bedroom (Miss Brown), being awakened by the noise, called out, and her nephew (John Brown) ran into the bedroom, saw the cartridge (an india- rubber tube about a yard and a half long, with a hard ball at the end) hissing on the floor, picked it u P, and threw it outside into a lobby, where it exploded with terrific violence, causing great damage to property, but, fortunately, no human being was in- is.-ied. The jury found the prisoner guilty, and Mr. Justice Day sentenced him to twenty years' penal servitude. Prisoner went to penal servitude, but was released on Septem- her 8 last. On Boxing Day prisoner called at the house of his brother, John Bell, at Dalston, the man whom he had previously threatened, and stayed about fifteen minutes. Supper was otiered him, but he declined, and Bell accompanied the prisoner some distance on the road to Carlisle. The prisoner seemed friendly. but refused to say why he was in the neighbourhood. Eventually the prisoner showed him a revolver (produced in court), and when they parted he said he would be tlie end of his sister-in-law if it were not- for his brother (John Bell), who stated in evi- dence that he had supplied the prisoner witk money, food, and a good bed. but he was now worse than ever. The prisoner denied that he had showed his brother the revolver pro- duced, as he had bought it in Liverpool since then. He wanted neither his brother, his food. his money, or his lodgings.—Poli-ce- constable Fisher said he apprehended the prisoner on January 2 for failing to report himself. He brought the prisoner to Car- L lisle. and at the police-station he said—"I'll do for the old woman Martha (his sister-in- law) at Dalston." He also said—"It is through her I have suffered all this."—Police- superintendent Graham asked the bench to forfeit prisoner's licence.—The prisoner said he wanted the revolver to carry with him to America, and that all the juries in England: could not prove him guilty of the crime.— The Bench forfeited the prisoner's licence as requested, and he will now have to complete his sentence of twenty years' penal servitude, I which will expire in 1902. 11
