OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY THE BROWN CLOAK. Farmer Foyglove, in pity for the Widow Waterman, who was too thinly clad for ccld weather, recklessly took down an old bom- bazine cloak, originally a bright brown, but now faded in as many streaks as a, zebra hide, which had hung from time immemorial in the back I entry. "There ain't no more use in thai old dud," he thought. "And it'll keep the cold out, and if rhilena makes a fuss I'll (five her a new blanket shawl." Mrs. Waterman went off rejoicing. Presently Mnr. Foxglove and Seraphme came home from the weekly meeting of the Society for the Helpers of the Heathen in jubilant spirits. "George Paters on was there," euid Mrs. Fox- glove. "R.: said he came after his aunt, but it's my beref that he wanted to walk home with Seraphine." Seraphine hung down her head and said nothing. "La, me," said Mrs. Foxglove from the kitchen, "what has come to things? Here's the cold kitchen and the apple pie gone. And tho cover off the butter jar, too!" "Y-yes," said the farmer, coughing. "I—I got sort o' hurgry. so I thought I'd jest take a enack." "Where's the bombazine cloak, pa?" said Seraphine after the somewhat frugal supper, as she iook the milking pail. "It's raining a little, and the cows haven't oonid home from SMte* yafc. "If I had a pair of eyes I'd use them," said Mrs. Foxglove, coming to the rescue and viewing the row of empty pegs with an eager glance. "Well, I declare! Nehemiah," turning to her husband, "that comes of leaving you to keep house. You must have gone off and left the door open and some tramp has got in and robbed us." I "I did jest step out to the woodpile for some more log?," said the fanner, thankful for the avenue of escape that was opened to him. "But I wasn't gone long." He wriggled uneasily in his cushioned rocking chair. "I wish old Mrs. Waterman had been to Jericho before she came here 1" he eaid to himself. Meanwhile pretty Seraphina, singing softly to herself, folded up the old striped shawl around her taper shoulders and went out to the pasture after the truant cows. Old Tulip's bell was jangling among the silver stemmed birches on the bleak hill. They were already on the homeward path, but Seraphina loitered unnecessarily on the foot- bridge that spanned a brawling brook. All was still and dusk, a certain frost sweet- ness was in the autumn air, and the only visible person wa.s a woman further down the brook, who was dipping out water. (Suddenly these wae imoitiMff «t^p-«troog> swift, and full of purpose. Seraphina's eye brightened a vivid colour rose into her cheeks. "There he comes now," she murmured, "there comes George!" To her surprise and dismay, however, the cavalier did not come up the hill, but staid his steps beside the other woman btlow. "He is throwing his arms around her neck," thought the indignant Seraphina. "He is-yes, he is actually kissing her—should I care? I'm sure it don't matter to me." Str;>phine hurried the cows home and finished the milking in less time than it had ever taken her before. She was just carrying in the milk- ing pail when a tall figure approached. "Seraphina "Pray don't trouble yourself to speak to me," said Seraphina, with a toss of the head. "Or if you do, plea.se call me Miss Foxglove!' And Seraphina vanished through the kitchen door. Wha.t's the matter, Phiny?" said her mother, noticing the girl's quiok movements and heigh- tened colour. I "Notliimg. ma," said Seraphina. It was getting toward-s nine o'clock when there came a knock at the door. Mrs. Fox- glove opened it. There stood the Widow Waterman. "I hope I'm not intruding," said Mrs. Water- man, "but here's the brown bombazine cloak, Mr. Foxglove, and, humbly thanking you all the same, I'd rather not wear it." "Eh?" said Mr. Foxglove in amazement. "It was very kind of you to give it to me," went on Mrs. Waterman, to the utter discom- j fiture of the poor farmer, "but there's some things as human flesh and blood can't bear, and to have Deaoon Pullaby's son asking if he could not see me home when I ceme out of the store.1 and Mr. Ferdinand Pluff saving was I to be at the dance at Melinda Edwards's on Tuesday night, and might he call for me at two o'clock- well, its rather upsetting. But the worst of it all was when I went to get a little water at the brook. A young fellow seized hold of me and was going to kiss me. I believe it's the brown cloak as done it all," with a meaning glance at Seraphina Foxglove. "So, if you would please to take it back, I'll try and get along with my old shawl a sipeill longer. And the roast of chicken was very good, sir; and thttit apple pie couldn't be beat." There was a moment's direful silence, and then Mrs. Waterman sidled out of the room and betook herself once more to the mysterious silence of the night. ''Well, I declare!" said Mrs. Foxglove. "Ma, don't scold pa. said Seraphina, half way bt-tween l&ugiuing and crying. The farmer feebly rubbed his hands. 1.1 think IH go to bed," said he. And he went. Seraphina, running out for a pitcher of water, the last tiling before shutting the house for the night nearly stumbled against George Paterson. 'Goodness me! What are you doing?" said Seraphina, "I can't go home and sleep. Seraphina, while you are angry with me," said the poor fellow, who was very desperately in love. What have I done?" "Nothing," she replied. "Except—excejjt that you can't blame me for being jealous when I see you hugging and kissing the widow Water- mail." "It was the cloak, Semphina-the brown cloak tbait misled me/' pleaded George. "1 thought it was you." -?- "Oh, it's all very well to talk!" said Sera- phina. Mrs. Foxglove thought Seraphina had never before been so long in bringing a pitcher of water. To George Paterson, however, the moments seem winged. But nevertheless he went home rejoicing.
RADNORSHIRE POLICE INQUIRY.
RADNORSHIRE POLICE INQUIRY. DECISION OF THE HOME SECRE- TARY. We are authoritatively informed that the result of the recent inquiry held at Presteign by Sir Richard Harrington is entirely in favour of Captain Parry and against the police. The Home Secretary has therefore declined, for the present at least, to sanction the usual Govern- ment grant. If this is persisted in, the county will be at a loss of about J6800. The chief- constable has not resigned, but has placed him- self in the hands of the standing joint com- mittee. A special urgent meeting of the com- mittee has been called for Friday next to con- sider the matter.

GREAT BILLIARD MATCH,
GREAT BILLIARD MATCH, ANOTHER CAPITAL DISPLAY. Roberts's marvellous exhibition on Monday evening, ^vhen he scored 1,786 points to his opponent's 404, and made up abaut 1,200 of his deficiency on the handicap terms, intensified the interest in the great match on Tuesday at the Egyptian-hall, London, ini which Roberts is giving 12,000 atart in 24,000, "spot harred." The scores liotl been left at—Peall. 18,799; Roberts. 13,232. At the outset Roberts played in perfectly marvellous fashion, and looked like leaving his opponent almost standing still. He had been left in play with an unfinished 285, and this he increased to 435 before coming to grief in rather an u-itucky imnner. He made a red hazard, but in doing so fouled his opponent's hall. Later on he put on 322 and 40, and took his game to 13,811, against 18.813. Up to this point Roberts had actually scored 580 to Peall's 15. and so completely had the chances veered round that he now held an advantage of about 100 points. It was here, however, that Roberto's period of triumph ended. The balls had run with provoking luck for Peall. as. though he bad gone on six times, he never had o- e real opening, but when the balls did at last come for him he utilised his opportunity with such admirable effect that be ran up a break of 218. Roberts followed with 85 and 50, but then Peall further improved his position by making 173. the laat 57 of which were off the red bail alone. In this he was favoured bv fortune, as he "fluked" the white in after making 116. For the remainder of the afternoon the contest was conducted in the keenest manner, Roberts making 163 and Peall 63, 48, and 23 unfinished. The totals at the adjourn- ment were-Peall, 19,343; Roberts, 14.145. In the course of the afternoon Roberts had made 913 points to Peall's 544. and, therefore, the latter had once more gained on the handicap terms. There wao another splendid attendance in the evening. and a fine display of billiards was witnessed on the part of both professionals. Peall increased his incomplete break to 76, and, after 189 from Roberts, followed on with 112. Then Roberts put on splendid 299, but the effort was practically neutralised by Peall running the effort was practically neutralised by Peall running up 48, 88, and 139. For a time Roberts had the best of the play, making 69. 58. 99, and 88, but afterwards Peall got in with 47 and 79. Towards the finish Roberts made 192, and then Peall ran on to his requisite number, the scores at the close standing—Peall. 20,001; Roberts, 15.209. The latter is thus 791 behind j on the handicap terms.

MONMOUTHSHIRE CHAMBER OF AGRICULTURE.
MONMOUTHSHIRE CHAMBER OF AGRICULTURE. THE DEPREDATIONS OF ROOKS. A general meeting of the Monmouthshire Chamber of Agriculture was held at the Angel Hotel, Abergavenny, on Tuesday, the newly-elected president, Mr. Evan David, of Liansaintffmed, Abergavenny, in the chair. Several new members were elected, including Mr. R. M'Kenna, M.P. for North Monmouth- shire.—Mr. Ernest Lyne brought forward the question of the swine fever regulations, aaid complained that under the present regulations, although they could send pigs out of tiie county, they could not bring any of them back except under a 28 days' quarantine. Monmouthshire was the only county where there were such stringent regulations. He thought they should uxge either the Board of Agriculture or the county council to modify these regulations.—After discussion, a resolu- tion was passed that the regulations should be in the hands of a central authority, and not local authorities, so that there should be uniformity, and in the meantime that the county council be asked to amend the exist- ing regulations eo as not to press hardly upon exhibitors.—The question of the damage done by rooks, wood pigeons, and other wild birds to the crops was brought forward by the pre- sident, who said that landowners who kept up rookeries scarcely realised the injury which farmers suffered.—Mr. John Prichard, speak- ing of his own losses in cornfields from this cause, thought farmers should at once take the matter into their own hands and stand the perils of the law.—Mr. Weetman said he believed that rooks had destroyed half his corn and half his roots. He believed they did thousands of pounds' worth of damage in the county in a year.—Mr. Henry Williams said he lived within a mile of three rookeries, and he had no hesitation in saying that the birds added 20 per cent. to the rent of his land by their depredations.—Mr. A. A. Wil- liams (agent to the Pontypool Estate) said he thought farmers had the matter in their own hands. If they would convey to landowners who kept rookeries the fact that injury was I dene they would do what was possible to lessen the number of birds.—The chamber afterwards discussed the question of Poor- law superannuation, and adopted a motion against any such scheme.

j BAZAAR AT COWBRIDGE.
j BAZAAR AT COWBRIDGE. ——— ? | Our Lady Correspondent writes:—What f j j quiet, quaint little oountry town Cowbridge is 11 was quite surprised wtien I wa'idered down i I there on Tuesday to find so little astir in the clean, white little borough, but once inside the Town-hall all was life and activity. The bazaar j in aid of Llanblethian Church wae well patronised. The first person I noticed as I entered was the bishop, who. beaming kindly on every- •' one, had his accustomed big basket in hand, steadily filling it from stall to stall. There was a very pretty collection of articles on the stalls, particularly on that of Mrs. and the Miera ■! Jenkirs, of Brynhyfryd, where beautiful needle- work and artistic paintings, and decorations tempted the buyer. A wooden table painted J with pansies would have done credit to A Royal Academician, it was so admirably •; painted. Hie ladieu at the stalls were. some aprons with bows and riblwns of red, white, and blue, and some wore black dresses with pink chiffon caps. rosettes, and sashes. The ladies at the refreshment stall wore white muslins spotted wiih black, fichus and caps of muslin. and donned each a spray of red roses. Many stylish dresses were worn by the older lad is* at the stalls. The bazaar continues to-day (Wednesday), nnd T hope wiU be as great i success as on Tuesday. The refrcehmenttt i which. T believe, were nearly all provided bg Mrs. TVitcJiard, were evofdl-ent. 1 '1
