Gambling for a Wife.
Gambling for a Wife. (By WILLIAM F. BERNTSEN.) The owner of Skinner street fixed his gaze on Lady Railford as he uttered the last words, but the beautiful face betrayed no emotion. "It is somewhat hard," he continued, "for is man of my sympathetic nature to narrate the events which followed; still, it is a self- imposed task, and, for the sake of Lady Rail- ford, I will proceed. If she should learn some extraordinary facts, I cannot help it, as events will prove." "Go on, sir," said my lady. "In consequence of my friend's success in his love suit, and the knowledge that all my overtures were discarded, I did what many a man haa done, namely, plotted and planned for revenge. It is not very nice to say such things of oneself, but the venom had so entered my soul that I was prepared to sink to any depth of degradation in order to accom- plish my object. I tried to bring my erring friend back into Club-land; I tried-and with a certain amount of success—to turn his thoughts again to our beloved cards and other means of gambling. It availed me little just then, for he harked back to his love and married her—married the woman for whom I would have lold my soul. After the wedding they went to Italy for some months, and, on their return, I called upon them. I was received with great cordiality, and immediately got t*» work again. Sir Digby accepted an invita- tion from a mutual friend for a few weeks' shooting, and I formed one of the party. They were rather a fast set, and after dinner cards were the order until far into the small hours. I noticed that my friend's honeymoon trip had not improved his playing, and the stakes ran higher every night. It was with unmixed satisfaction that I noted my fnend had again become possessed of an insatiable love of gambling. He lost heavily, and at the break up of the party, instead of returning home, we found ourselves in London plunged into a vortex of dissipation. One night—and here I must ask my listeners to remain quiet-he' lost thirty thousand pounds at euchre. The following day he had to resort to a certain firm of money-lenders, to whom I introduced him, and borrowed fifty thousand pounds at a little over forty-five per cent. We played again that night, but still Dame Fortune was against my friend, and I had to assist him on several occasions in order to pull him through the night. I was careful to obtain an I 0 U for the sums I advanced. About two o'clock in the morning he became greatly excited, and, rising from the table, exclaimed, 'I'm a ruined man.' I suggested that another bottle of wine would calm his nerves, and then quietly asked him the total amount of his losses. He told me that since leaving home he had lost one hundred and seventy thousand pounds—without mentioning the sum bor- rowed from the commercial gentlemen I have mentioned. He informed me that, owing to depreciations ir the value of land and other cautses. it would be impossible to meet his liabilities. He insisted upon having more wine, and then I Inad, him a magnificent offer -unprecedented, I fancy, in the history of gambling. I offered to clear off the whole of his debts, on the result of a single game of euchre, if he would stake his wife! We played the game—I won!" A low moan came from the lips of Lady Railford, now crouching in a chair. With flashing eyes, Sir Digby watched his tor- mentor, great beads of perspiration standing on his forehead--still, 110 sound' escaped his lips. Stebble-Chick waited vintil he had noted the effect of his words, and t%n continued: "We didn't do things by halves, but pro- ceeded to have the stakes paid over j It was arranged that my friend should remain in the house where he gambled Until he had quite recovered from the effects of his carouse. In the meantime a letter was Written by him to his wife, asking her to co,041 to an address at Brompton, where he was lying ill. I gave that letter to the gentleman who accompanies me to post, but through some censed bungling on the part of the postal authorities it never reached its destination, or"—hetft }je rose and pointed to the now terrified won>^n—"j should have had my winnings then, instead of wait- ing all these years." He resumed his seat, and, renving a nod of approval from Greaves, went on with his story. "For some months afterwards I ftw nothing of my friend; I knew that he haq, returned to his wife, and waa, apparent^ living -?- happily. I took the precaution to become pos-1 sessor of all the pieces of paper my friend had signed, not forgetting the large item with the commercial gentlemen before mentioned. I sent him several letters, which he thought fit to ignore but eventually he consented, to receive a representative of mine, who, he was informed, was empowered to come to a satis- factory arrangement and bring documents of great importance with him. Now listen! My re- presentative came to this Hall ostensibly on a fishing excursion, but really on business intent. The first day he arrived they went to the riverside together, and, to show his apprecia- tion of my kindness, Sir Digby Railford, gambler, robber, and murderer, robbed him of the contents of his pocket-book and threw him in the river. He was drowned." "Liar!" cried Sir Digby, as he sprang towards his accuser. "Keep back," said Stebble-Chick, as he levelled his revolver, "you will find it better to take matters quietly." "Quiet, you hell hound yelled Sir Digby, still advancing. "Fire if you can!" ClickJ. olick! The hammer of the revolver rose and fell as the chamber revolved, but no report followed. Missed fire! In another moment he was in the powerful grasp of his adversary. "Help, Greaves, help!" screamed the owner of Skinner-street. The action of his dutiful servant was most inexplicable, for, instead of rushing to the aid of his worthy master, he produced a stout piece of rope from his coat pocket, remarking as he did so: — "Don't hurt my dear master more than is necessary, Sir Digby. and if you will kindly place him in this chair I think I can prevent him doing himself any harm! Thank you, that's just the position. It's very hard for a man of my sympathetic nature to bind his mister in. a chair, but, as he remarked this morning, necessity knows no law. In another I moment, sir, you can release your mam- there! I think he looks capital; one would almost fancy that he was used to it!" "Traitor," cried Stebble-Chiok, "you un- loaded that revolver." "I did," said Greaves coolly, as he motioned to Sir Digby to take a seat and smiled encou- I ragingly to Lady Railford, who was dumb- founded by the extraordinary turn things had I taken; "I took them out while you went for 1 a stroll in the village." I A paroxysm of rage seized his master, whose veins stood out like whips, and, with eyes almost starting from their sockets, he raved | I and cursed until prostrated by exhaustion. 5 "That's right," said Greaves, "now you'll be quiet and listen. For Heaven's sake, don't ¡ | repeat those antics, you might break a blood vessel, and think how we should miss such a distinguished gentleman." Lady Railford had recovered herself and gazed like one in a dream on the strange scene. j "I want you to listen, Colonel Harfield, to j the statement I am about to make. If, as you advised Sir Digby, any mistakes should creep in, I trust that you will rectify them." i "Be careful; remember, you are as deep in the mire as I am in the mud," said Stebble- i Chick. I "That's not an original remark, and will not weigh with me in what I am about to say. You have been listened to with groat atten- tion, and I claim the same respect." "You shall have it," exclaimed Sir Digby. "Very good. Twenty-five years ago, George Harfield, I was lieutenant in the 97th, but left that regiment in order to join an Indian regiment, of which you were colonel. I served with you for about two years, when I returned bo England to be married. At the expiration of my leave I rejoined my regiment, full of life and hope for the future. I brought my wife back with me, as you will well remember. At that time we were stationed at Cawnpore, and through your instrumentality (so I after- wards discovered) I was soon despatched to a remote station in charge of a handful of men. [ cheerfully obeyed my orders, and for some months was practically out of touch with civilisation. How I longed for it to cease and return to Cawnpore. to the loving wife I had left behind. At last the end came, and I did return, to find what ?" "What you mÏlrht have expected." "You lie, George Harfield. I thoneht- vou >,n Encli«li officer beyond the pale of such a V-?d. With o soft toneue. and pleasing rrnn- icrs, you had gradimllv worked your cruel scheme. ?nd I came back to find my wife had Red with you." (To be continued).

WELSH LAND BILL.
WELSH LAND BILL. Our London correspondent telegraphed on Friday evening :-The Welsh Radical mem- bers will meet on Tuesday to discuss the character of the Welsh Land Bill. A diffe- rence of opinion prevails amongst them as to whether it is desirable to draft a moderate Bill on the lines of the minority report, or a drastic measure in accordance with the provisions of the majority report. The general view is in favour of the former procedure, to draft which a sub-committee, consisting of Mr. Brynmor Jones, Mr. Bryn Roberts, and possibly Mr. Abel Thomas, will, it is believed, be formed.
