:?----------,OUR SHORT STORY
:? OUR SHORT STORY LA GA VILLA. I t It watt in the smoki'ng-room after a dinner- party that we discussed the subject of bull- 1 Waiting—on courage in general, and espatially m the courage of the Spaniards. J "OKI Travallc, you must have 110 roice on that score. You are absolutely infatuated ID tiiose people." I "I! what an idea! I have certainly passed ;jr three years in Spain, and as I know them for | what i~ey are worth-for what they are—very | proud, not, however, vain, not assuming, very I grave, full of ardour, painnate—fond of the ideal and never surfeited with sensation- ignorant to satiety—they renew things that are exhausted. As for the courage of the Spaniards, I have seen during the last war of Don Carlos the heroism of the Cid." "You liave seen rough things, Travalle," said an officer, who was sitting astride his chair, smoking. Maurice Travalle stood up, and leant against the mantelpiece. Very tall, very robust, he bad although a rare ugliness—the beauty of an & original cranium, and was one of those men who was little likely to draw back from the batlefield of honour or of love. It was some- thing to see his dry gestures, to hear his ringing roice. Something to see one of those looks, where the mind is founded on audacity touching on cynicism. One felt that he had not lived the Jifa of other men-but better or worse? In j the position of corespondent and draughtsman fie bad followed tike wan of fijpftm* Ruaria. JSgypt. ''Yes, answered he, "I have, indeed, as you eav, seen rough thinigs." "Afid. (be priests, they are all, are thsv not, a "villainous vet f" "People exaggerate. Two extremes, very good, fanatics, same of tins eisct, or ignoble but what is very droll, there are vifUge priests, who, instead of growing stupid, as 6hey do among us, return to a primitive life-they ftcut, they fish, ,,r>d are good horsemen." J "Oh they are a rude race, and the seminary does not succeed in making them feminine, and does not hinder them from baptising, con- fessing between times, and when thty return to their homes, the game-bag full, their gun on their shoulder, the boys and girls come to ki. their hands. I have rtssieted at a thing of this sort. A fine and terrible thing. The war was over, Don Carlos taken flight, and I had the absurd v him to return to France on foot across the Basque pirovincete. I a.rrived a,t Urvagna, a country town lost in a wood near Vittoria. A dream of solitude. I strolled to the right and to the left, sketched a iew corners, and I learned where to lkid the presbytere; it ,vas with the assurance of a. heathen that I asked for shelter. These corners, even the poorest, have good wine, poultry, cheese, and e^gg (the curiosities of a fast), and provided travellers are willing to listen to mass, which office is pr-rfornipd on their account, a polite- ness worthy of more gratitude, ■> hey are wel- oomed with deligh*. The pre&ytere »*, Urvagna. would be called in ITreneh a clatea-u; it was a ruin with four crumbling t'wers. It was doubtless a gentleman's resid°n e, which had been abandoned, and the ohapel had served for the parish. The priest-Don Santiago Mendez (ah! shall I ever forget thai name?)— I was standing cii the threshold ready to ekin a fox. He was a tall, ill-made, gigantio man, and one could guess the formidable frame under that patched cassock. Hair white as enow, a copper-coloured skin, and hard sharp face—if it were not for an expression of frankness and undeniable royalty, the face of a Lrigand. He received :ne with Spanish gravity, so sample, so cordial, and with that reserve which con- stitutes tine first politeness. "By good fortune I already knew enough of the language to express myself easily, and when 1 i-clcl him I had followed the war with Carlos —at the renowned name which resounded for a Basque like the striking of the tom-tom announcing his liheriy-I got on well with the old man. He gave me a good supper, good wine, good lodging. One must not be difficult to please. For example, the lodging was one of the towers, with walls more or less patched, and with a door of the middle ag>Pt?; stern, but comfortably bolted and Dadlocked. "A staircase of granite which appeared like ebony, black with age and dirt; then, on the groupd-floor, a ball. I judgeq by the enormous chimney that the ancient bodyguard had used it for a kitchen, refectory, and library, and. country-like, had adorned it with palms, Indian ccrn. onions, saddles, crockery, saucepans, tdd books, statuettes, pots, dirty rags, and spider webs. There were two or three chairs, a ohest, and an exquisite able of the purest Renaissance —perhaps the debris of the former owner. This was the lodging. The ouppo" OEUC a ravoiiry mixture—sauwigiea. apples. 04UOL MkcUawt .? with pepper, bewitched with allspice. It would have grilled the stomach had it not been for a jar of delicious water, which we all drank in turn-the priest, I, and the servaut-a red and rosy young girl of twenty. "Poor girl!" Travalle stopped, then afW a pause continued: "At last we supped, all three very gaily—I should say all four. Don San- tiago had a superb hunting d og, which in a mea- sure washed our plates. I felt quite at home w:th these simple people. He talked nf war, of the harvest, and of all the gossip of Spain; of thieves, banditti, and of furious r>ding. The little servant re-counted with that factitious fear that please women so much that a la gavi l a troo-D made up of smugglers and deserters, prowled about, killing. stealing, violating, tor- turing the priests to extort the money they had colle^ed for the poor, and for surplice f-ees, etc. At all this Don Santiago laughed loudly. He pretended that it was the fault of the monks, who knew better how to baaid a wax tapers than guns. 'Lst them come,' he raid. 'we will nmuse them a little,' and he laughed a sardonic laugh. Faith, it was charming, and after #uj per we went away to smoke our cigars, while the servant washed the plates and dishes, when suddenly the diog barked furiously, and sprang towards the window, then gave a low grown; for a minute a profound silence reigned—one could only hear the pot boiling. 'They are marching' said the priest, 'it is a troop.' He approached the window, opened it softly, pushed back the shutter, and as he bpnt down he heard a whistling, a report, and a ly, I! grazed my hair and planted itsetf in the girl's head- She fell stiff. The priest lowered the window and the shutter. We hastened towarda her, her heart had ceased to beat; it was instantaneous! 'It is the Gavill* old man said. 'They come jr -A my jtafc ave them the a line. N ev,r! the money is not mine; it belongs to tbo sanctuary. The door below will resist a long time, they must bum it, but if they have a ladder, it will be by the window.' 'Will you resist them?' I asked. 'Until I am ripped up. If you fear, climb on the roof. When I am dead they will do nothing to you.' 'You laugh?' I said to him. '1 shall stay here.' 'Listen, at the bottom of a bag of flour there ate a hundred crowns. It belongs to the sanctuary. Between the leaves of my breviary a. thousand reals.* It is mine that they give me for the service of the Mass.' "As the dog continued furious and always bar km t he took it by the neck, opened a little door, and threw it out. Then, with a puff, extinguished the lamp; by the light of a brazier he unhooked his gun. 'Ah!' growled he. I have tat three balls in the cartridige-box. You have a revolver? Well, let us hide, they can omy come in one by one—the window is small. How many shots can you fire?' 'Four.' "Andl I three. That will perhaps kill seven men,' replied he, quietly, as if he contemplated killing seven foxes! 'Ah, we shall not wait long.' The rotten shutters and the windows also were broken with two bloWtj of a hatohet. but at the first profile we caw at the aperture he fired and the man disappeared. "Thene was silence for a moment, then mutterings, then a species of human avalanche fell, so quickly, so enraged, thtt the sound of our shots were lost, as if in a charge of artillery. In a second the priest and I were thrown down. They liighted the lamp again, and I saw a troop such ae I have never dreamt of. They wara .V«)meaxed; with some were daubed -?- with red paint, others had' masks, or were dis- guised with the skins of beasts. There were 1 about twenty wanton fellows. I "A short thickset man, who appeared to I be the commander, gave the order to go down J and open the door. i "'Ah! mv lord!' said he, touching Don Santiago with his foot as he lay on the ground, 'one of tlie men you have wounded is going to die; they have brought him in." Having hoisted him on tc an impromptu litter four of the scoundrels set him down on the hearth. 'Priest! confession!' he said, with the death rattle in his tihroat. "These wretches unfastened the cords they had bound round Don Santiago, and oh, how fine it was to see the old m. advance, calm and majestic, and, as the djJ 'nan muttered a prayer he raised his hand and pronounced in the fine Latin of the Spaniards: "Ego te absefvo,' whilst all of them crossed themselves. It was not long a lathery froth tame on the lips of the unhappy man. Here the thick-set little man, pointing his blunderbuss at the priest's ohin, asked, where the money was. 'I have nothing,' said he, 'nothing.' Cast- ing a look round he saw on the table a large kitchen knife: he seized it, upset the table and the lamp with a blow of his fist, and then groping in the dark i heard a struggle. Ah! the horror! the oaths, the cracking of a dis- charge, and nothing more. I awoke the next day in the hospital at Vittoria. I had a ball in the shoulder, a spent ball, a souvenir of a brawl. It appeared that when the soldiers went in, the bodv of the priest had no longer human form. Thirty-two balls had pierced him. Ah! < r these fine lads, the Basques!" *A real is about Is. 8d. of our money.

Some four or five years ago a committee was appointed, of representatives of some of the principal life insurance offices, to investigate ( the question of the relative mortality of persons engaged in the sale of intoxicating drinks as compared with the mortality of similar persons not so engaged. Among some of the "unexpected facts" brought to light by the investigation was tihifc—that- "lenmle publican and female grocer show a favouratfie rate of mortality." As com- pared with male innkeepers and male grocer* the difference is striking; so much so, that whilst a very considerably larger premium than ordinary is demanded by all life offices from all male assurers belonging to the publio-n class, and the (Hass of wine and spirit selling grocers, a premium almost identical with that of ordi- nary assurers is found to cover the risk in the case of females engaged in the same occupations. Curiously enough, the wives of male publicans and of male grocers who sell wines and spirits are found to be more liable to disease and death from alcoholism than the females who fdllow the liquor business independently. It is not easy to explain iese circumstances, except on the assumption that, ir the first place, women are naturally more disposed to sobriety and good conduct than men; and that, secondly, such women as are willing to play an independent part in the world possess a strength of charac- ter which is not shown ao decisively by those who depend upon husbands or other male pro- tectors. It might have been supposed that women, in consequence of their greater sen- sitiveness, would, when not under male control, be much disposed to give way to the tempta- tions of alcoholism. It is not so, however, by any means among women who are really capable; and the facts, so far as they go, offer distinct encouragement to such to adventure boldly upon the sea of open competition, and bo trust to their superiority in certain branches of morals and conduct to bring them snjccess.

HOUSE WARRANTY.
HOUSE WARRANTY. Since the particular "environment" which influences our health almost more than any other is the house we live in, every legal case which tends either to clear up the present state of the law with regard to the "warrapting" of the sanitation of houses, or to show the necessity for some improvement in the law, is of great importance. The case of Green v. Symonds, tried recently before Mr. Justice .Lawrance, is very pimple, but as instructive as ii is simple. The statement of plaintiff's claim shows that Miss M. P. Synions verbally "war- ranted" a house, known as Earlswood House, at Earlswood, in 18SH, as being "perfectly dry, and the drains in perfect order. On this warranty Mr. W. H. Green became tenant of the house on a three years' agreement. Mr. Green found, on residence that the house was not dry, and that the drains were not good. Indeed, so bad was the condition of things, that he left the house, and sued Miss Symons for damages. In the result, a verdict of JBM damages was given in his favour. But the opposing counsel objected to the verdict 011 an interesting point. He did not dispute the fact of the "verbal warranty," but he contended that as there was a written agreement between the partoes, and that as the warranty was not included in the written agreement, it was of no binding validity. The judge did not allow tln5: contention to stand; but be gave Heave to appeal, and there the question is for the i £ :ine suspended. But there is no need to waL for the decision of the Court of Appeal in order to deduce the moral of the oase. The moral is this: that a tenamt should on no account take a kouse without having a "warranty" of perfect sanitation in- serted in his written agreement; and if there be no written agreement, then a written war- ranty should be asked for. One cannot help wondering at the carelessness—or is it liie stupidity ?—of the British householder in hit character of a tenant. TENNYSON AM) GEORGE ELIOT. Dcsn Farrsr, in giving his reouniBcences of T'-nr-yson in "The Temple Magazme" for .1. "'ry, tells us that after the marriage of the Laureate's son Lionel to Miss Locker Ijunpson (now Mrs. Augustine. Birrell) a.t Westminster Abbey, the chief guests went into the Jerusa- lem Chamber for the signing of the register. It was almost impossible to secure a passage for the distinguished personages who were to sign as witnesses. "After securing the signa- ture* of Mr. Gladstone and the Duke of Argyll" (continues Dean Farrax) I had to find Mr Tennyson-it was not till afterwards that he received his title—and steer him to the book. Be wab short-dghted, and the Jerusalem Cham- ber, adways somewhat dark, was stilt more so from iw densely-crowded con clition. As I held his arm, antf led him along, a lady held out her hand with a warm, How 4re you, Mr. Tsnnvsou? I am glad that you got in just, in time.' 'Oh, how do you do?' he answered, 'I've not the least idea who you are!' 'I am Mrs. Lewes,' she said with a smile. It was his friend and neigh- Iwur George Eliot,' but (ag he stopped to ex- plain) he could liardlv distinguish her feature* i-> the (Towd and somewhat dim light of the I ancient famous Chamber, and had not, at the moment, recognised her voice. This was the only time that I had the pleasure of seeing George Eliot.'
