Gambling for a Wife.
Gambling for a Wife. (By WILLIAM F. BERNTSEN.) III. For some days after Sir Digby Railford's risk, Mr. Stebble-Chiek remained remarkably I juiet. It was exactly five mornings after the Bvent that he awoke with a clear head, and commenced the day's proceedings by shoutina; for the faithful Greaves. On the appearance of that worthy, he was informed that that was going 110 be a wonderfully busy day. "A day of work, Greaves," he said, "a day of action. I shall, no doubt, want your mise- rable assistance, and I want you to exert yoar- oelf in the best possible manner." "That is what I always do, sir," returned Greavw. "Yes, you scoundrel, because I pay you well." '"Tw^ty-five pounds a year is not a great balary," the servant ventured to remark. "But quite sufficient for the work you perform. I have been looking up Rradshaw, and see there JØ a train leaving King's Cross at 10.27, and arriving at Railford at 11.25. This will suit us admirably. Don't stare; I said 'us,' for you must accompany me. I'm sorry to have such a disreputable specimen of humanity for a oompanion, but necessity knows no law." "Then why don't you leave the miserable ppecimen behind?" aeked Greaves. "Because I may want assistance. Have breakfast ready in an hovr, order a cab in good time. and, if such a thing is possible, make younsif look fairly respectable. The mission before « may prove somwehat dangerous, so joo may a« well prime my tasice of revolvers." "They are dangerous things to carry, sir," said Greaves. "Nonsense, there's nothing like being pre- pared tor any emergency which may arise. We're going to Railford to demand a redemp- tion of my bonds. Our friend who called the other evening had the audacity to send me two thousand pounds a day or two back, thinking, I suppose, that that would stave me off. I can feel the grasp of his cursed fingers en my throat yet, but I'll be even with him before the night." "Is he at Railford?" "If not at Railford, he's somewhere in the immediate neighbourhood." "How do you know ?" asked Greaves. "You thin-skinned idiot, do you think I have been asleep for a week?" "At times you have," Greaves retorted, meekly. "Perhaps—but a sheep dog's sleep. Now, my confidential servant, my boon companion, my second self, my slave, stick to me to-day and we'll have the villain grovelling at our feet. JSlo more palaver, but action, action, diCtien." Stetbble-Chick arose and dressed himself with scrupulous care. He helped himself to a nip of brandy, and onoe more opened his safe. Taking out his beloved "stocks," he carefully examined his calculation to see that all was right. With a face that might have resembled the Heathen Chinee for simplicity of expres- sion, he was carefully watched by his servant, who had returned to announce breakfast. "If a all ri £ ht. Greaves," he chuckled. "Gold, the woman I love, and sweet revenge! I Let's have some breakfast." The cab containing master and man arrived at King's Cross in good time, and punctually at 11.25 they arrived at Railford. Stebble- Ohick, resplendent in a fur-lined overcoat and silk hat, formed a strange contrast to his shabbily-dressed servant, who walked behind and carried his traps. The ground was evi- dently familiar to the leader, as he needed no direction to find the Crown. He ordered a private room, and requested that luncheon should be ready in half an hour for himself and friend. He then took a quiet stroll through the village, leaving orders that on no consideration was Greaves to leave the private room. It is on record, however, that the order was disobeyed, for no sooner was his master out of sight than he repaired to the bar and entered into a desultory conversation with the landlord; by cautiously framing his inquiries he learnt that "the stranger," as he was called by the Railfordites, was still in the neighbourhood. Having elicited this impor- tant fact, he was about to return to the room, when a heavy hand grasped him by the shoulder, and he looked up to see Sir Digby Railford. A cry of joy escaped his lips as he grasped the hand held out to him, and with- out further parley they immediately adjourned to another part of the house. In less than half an hour Stebble-Chick re- turned to find his faithful servant where he nad left him, and hear the rattle of a horse's hoofs speeding along the road in the direction of Railford Hall. In the matter ef Juc luncheon the landlord of Skinner-street was quite an epicure, and mine host was only too delighted to attend to the wants of such an excellent customer- one, in fact, who insisted upon the worthy landlord partaking of a bottle of Moet and Chandon at his expense. "And now," said Stebble-Chick, w<hen the cloth had been removed, "we will proceed to evolve our plans. I have been thinking out a scheme by which we can obtain an entrance to Railford Hall." "I don't think it wants much scheming," said Greaves, quietly. "Why?" "It amounts to this; I am not going behind your back to say that you have been a hard taskmaster for me to serve all these years." "Possibly I have, but proceed." "In spite of what has happened, I am in with you now for all you're worth, and-" "Stop," said Stebble-Chick, "I am goihg to ask you to shake hands before you utter another word. Put it there." Greaves shook the proffered hand in a spirit of apparent humility, and then continued: "I feel certain that I can obtain admission; at the worst I can only fail. The lodgekeeper will remember my last memorable visit, and I think that will be sufficient. Put yourself in my hands, and fear nothing." "Right, I'll do so, and if we come safely through this little business I'll give you my word that you shall be made an independent man. At last I am beginning to understand your sterling qualities, and regret that certain events have taken place, but, under the cir- I cumstances, perhaps there are many servants in the world who would have fared still worse You shall be well rewarded for your services." Greaves answered solemnly, "I will." It was growing dusk when Stebble-Chick and his servant presented themselves at the entrance of the Hall. Leaving his master in the background, Greaves entered into a long and apparently angry discussion with the lodgekeeper. Eventually they were allowed to proceed, and, deeply engrossed in conver- sation, walked through the avenue. Strange as it may seem, they were evidently expected, for the butler, having made his obeisance and uttered a few oaeual remarks, ushered his visi- tors into the Oak Room. In a few moments they were followed by Sir Digby and Lady Railford, and the last scene in the pitiful drama of their lives was about to be played. The crisis of their lives had come. • • ♦ It was Greaves who commenced the scene. "Mr. Stebble-Ohick," he said, "you are now in the presence of Sir Digby and her ladyship your opportunity has come. Strike "A little caution is necessary in matters in- volving such weight," returned his master. "Might I suggest that her ladyship had better confer with me in private ?" "I absolutely decline to do so," said Lady Railford. "You will find it the best course to pursue," continued Stebble-Chick. "I will abide the issue." "So let it be. You'll excuse me if I take a chair and carefully run over a few of the cir- cumstances which have led to this Btrange j meeting. It will make us understand our posi- tions and help us to arrive at a solution of this little trouble. Does her ladyship acquiesce ?" Her ladyship bowed. "And you, Sir Digby?" "I am ready." Stebble-Chick hummed a few bars of a popular refrain and started his story. "It is now some eighteen years since I became acquainted with Sir Digby Railford, sbortfiy, in fact, after I arrived in England from India on leaving the Army—Celonel George Harfield, vour most obedient servant. We met at a club in London, and soon became firm friends (you'll excuse me, Sir Digby, if I I make any mistakes, but please correct errors). Our tastes and pursuits seemed to run in similar grooves, one of them, unfor- tunately, being a decided penchant for gam- bling. Well, we gambled, we lost, we won, turned night into day, and vice-versa, and so for a whole year we enjoyed uninterrupted friendship. Then came the turning point in our careers. It was the Oaks day at Epsom, and the drag in which we went down, unfor- tunately, upset a carriage driven by a lady, who was vainly trying to find a passage through the mass of vehicles bound for the course. We jumped down and assisted the lady to the carriage, but it was obvious that she could not control the animal, and so my friend gallantly took charge of the vehicle and its fair occupant and drove her home—even at the risk of losing the ram for the Oaks. I think my hatred of Sir Digby Railford com- menced from that moment, because I thought the frail creature we assisted the loveliest woman I had ever seen. My love for her commenced from that moment, and lives yet an all-consuming passion." (To be continued)

PROGRESSIVE AFRICA. EINQ MENELIK LEADING THE NATIVE KIND. A Central News telegram from Paris on Thursday says:—The "Figaro" to-day pub- lishes an interview with M. Chefneux, who has long resided at the Court of Menelik. M. Chefneux states that the Negus is now engaged on administrative organisation, modelled on that in France, but in a very simple way. The telegraph extends from Adowa to Entotto, Harrar, and Jebute, and the tele- phone is in working order to Harrar and Addis Ababa. He was already quite familiar with these inventions, and appreciated them. Bicycling is carried on, and the Negus even possesses auto-mobile vehicles, which be manipulates very skilfully. M. Lleintieff, the Russian explorer, who was shortly leaving for Abyssinia, was taking with him a com- plete set of military musical instruments and I a bandmaster. I —

AN ELECTRIC SHIP I
AN ELECTRIC SHIP I A Massachusetts correspondent 8f the "New- 1 castle Leader" writes: -Shipbuilders and steamship owners and agents are deeply inte- rested in a model of an electric vessel which has been constructed at Providence, R.I. The inventor promises phenomenal speed, and the craft will be a distinct novelty in many par- ticulars. The promoters of the enterprise are planning to build a vessel 200ft. long, which is to have no less than fourteen propellers, six placed forward to draw it through the water, j and eight astern as pushers—seven, of course, on each side. A speed of forty knots an hour is looked forward to with the utmost confi- dence. The boat is designed ostensibly for passenger traffic, but its ultimate purpose is a practical demonstration of a system which the projectors hope to see applied to naval vessels in the near future. The president of the com-p-any which is to build the boat is Richard B. Painton, a naturalised Englishman. "I have perfected a vessel with nearly twice the epeed of vessels propelled by steam," says Mr. Painton. "An ocean liner of the improved pattern can cross the Atlantic in three days, and a cruiser similarly equipped will have a speed of thirty-five knots an hour. Steam can drive these armoured monsters only fifteen to twenty-one knots under the most favour- j able conditions. The fuel account will be at least half of what it now jg, and the space required for the vast steam plant can be utilised fer passengers or freight."

ICORRUPTION IN CANADA-
CORRUPTION IN CANADA- A Reuter's telegram from Winnipeg on Thursday eays:—Investigations into the Dominion elections held Last June in Manitoba show that (there were gross irregularities during the contest. Six dieput^returning officers have been coirrai t iea for trial for abuse of trust. It is alleged that an organised system of stuffing the ballot-boxes prevailed, c&rd-^harpere being empioved to substitute one kind of ballot paper for others. Bribery sufficient to void the elec- tion is admitted at Winnipeg, and the election trial is thus obviated.
