Our Short Stories.
Our Short Stories. LOVE LINGERED UNKNOWN. The house was one of the smallest and humblest in the whole village. The linden tree in the yard was tall enough to spread its protecting arms over the low shingle roof, moss- grown with age. Hubert and Katherine brought with them but little more for a dowry than courage and health and strong, willing, working hands, for the little farm was not their own. From season to season they prospered, and material bliss came with overflowing hands when a little dark-haired girl was added to the flaxen-haired youngster. In the adjoining parish a distant relation of Katherine's had died, and, fearing no refusal, had left her dark-eyed baby to Hubert and his wife. They were astonished, to be sure, when one morning the mail carrier lifted out of his email country wagon a bundle with a letter from the dead woman acquainting them with the tiny stranger's mission. Thus was little Liz's entrance made. She grew out of the cradle and into short clothes, and soon her little feet pattered ever !Moth«r Katherine's clean kitct.ca floor and over garden ana Joiiu koyt jjood comjjiiij with the little j sister. In summer they hunted fer berries together in the woods, and when the winter came they coasted down the hillside on a sled the boy had himself built. When other youngsters troubled the child or niade her cry. i John came to the rescue and proved an able champion. The years sped on, and the prosperity and good fortune of the farm grew on apace. When I the lease ran out the farm became Hubert's property. "J ohu must have the advantage of a better education than I had," declared Hubert when the lad was eighteen years old. "I'll send him to a commercial college, and I'll keep him there as long as he can find anything to learn." So John was sent away—many hundred miles away-from home. The farmer's boy should see the world. He shouldn't choose li s voca- tion ignorant of its ways, and if he found anything that* gratified his tastes better than the simple farm life Hubert was willing to I make the sacrifice and set him up in business. After three years, John came back, ready to settle down and live and work on the farm like his father. lie found Liz as much changed as she found hiiu. Before her stood a broad-shouldered man. Self-consciousness was in the serious face. and the sprouting moustache suited it well. The half-grown girl he remembered had I blossom-id into a beautiful maiden. 80011 after John's return Hubert and Jtaiheriiie wondered whv their i«n uad A. who had been the best of friends all their lives, no longer got along well together. When Liz was gay John was mad, and when he teased her she resented it. Out of their insignificant quarrels came serious dinicuities. Mother Katherine medi- tated, admonished, pleaded—it was all in vain. Father Hubert lost his patience, threatened to box his son's ears, and to drive him from home if he could not get along with the girl. One morning, after another turbulent scene the night before, Liz came with tearful eyes and pale cheeks to her foster mother. "Mother," she began, "I have been thinking that father should not have cause to send John a way on my account. Let me go myself." It did not take Liz long to carry out her plan. The pretty, well-behaved girl found service in a small summer resort in the neighbourhood. The male guests took a bit more freedom with the pretty lassie than she liked, and the cook proposed marriage to her about once a week.' She refused him peremptorily every time, but at last, tired of his persistence, she decided to go home on Sunday to consult with Mother Katherine. How much home-sickness had part in this resolution Liz would not own to herself. "I think it is time for the boy to marry," said Hubert one day to his wife. "The richest girl in the village is casting sheep's eyes at him. If lie wants her, I am sure he can get her, and that would be a great fortune for our John." ''And >ve. father "We would have Liz at home again." r When Sunday came-the old folks had gone rff on a visit—John donned his best clothes and, with the silver-mounted pipe. in his mouth, strolled through the village toward the uiill. When he came to the mill dam he paused. Hera it was where he had pulled Liz out of the water. What a dear little thing she was then. He crossed the brook and glanced into the garden, where the miller's daughter sauntered up and down between her flower beds. It seemed strange and foolish to him all at once that he should go in there and propose to her, and the mill and the quaint little house and big forest behind lost all attractiveness for John. He turned and started for home much faster than he had come away. On the bench under the linden tree sai a girl in holiday dress. In her hand she held a rose. She arose and came toward him holding cut her hand. "Good afternoon, .TohnK' she said. "Liz!" he cried, and in a moment held her in his arms and kissed her soundly. She pushed him aside and the hot colour mounted from her throat to the roots of her dark hair, but she said nothing, and went into the house with him. The bullfinches sang in the trees, and the water splashed gaily as it fell from the spot in the trough. John pushed his chair close to the girl's and laid his arm around her fhou-der. "Liz, we've been such good friends always, but we are not brother and sister after all!" "No, that we are not," answered Liz softly. "And that's why 1 think you had uetter be m v wife! Will you, Liz ? Liz said not a. word. With downcast eyes she plucked the rose to pieces that still was in her hand, nodded her head, and smiled, as she had been, wont to II I
A WOMAN'S LOVE.(
A WOMAN'S LOVE. A faint sweet odour of violets filled the air, and the light from two shaded lamps threw a subdued glamour over Phyllis Meredith's dainty form and sweet face. The door bell rang, and a moment later a tall, military-looking man was ushered into her presence, and a man-servant announced: "Major Hamlin." "How good of you to come," the said. hold- ing out her hand. The major seated himself directly opposite his companion, and f°r a shori time there was absolute silence in the room. Then Major Hamlin said with abruptness: "I have come to bring you a message frcm Donald Cameron. That is why I am here. >^othing would have induced me to come except my promise to the dead." Phyllis Meredith gazed at her visitor with wondering eyes. "The dead!" she cried. "What do you mean? How dare you say such a thing?" And she rose and stood before him, trembling like a reed in the wind. Major Hamlin raised his eyebrows as if greatly surprised. Donald Cameron died three months ago," he said calmly. "Surely you must have heard? There was a ring of truth in his voice which even Phyllis Meredith could not doubt, but as she listened no cry fell from her lies, and her beautiful eyes, shining like twin stars, were undimmed by tears. She put her hand to her head and pushed back the heavy hair from her brow as if to lift some load that oppressed her. "No one told me," she murmured in a weary voice. "I wonder why. It seems strange that I did not know—and you must forgive me for not believing you. It was very rude of me. wasn't it Major Hamlin cleared his throat. "Donald's message was this," he said. 'Tell Phyllis my last thoughts were (Jf her, and of her sterling goodness—and ask her to try and forgive me "Donald said that," she mumured—"then he must have known-someone have told him—Oh! Major Hamlin! How can I thank you sufficiently for bringing me this message ?" The major's lips curled with scorn. "I should have thought," he said sternly, "that Donald's message would scarcely hare been a welcome one-but perhaps the irony of it is lost upon you—for Donald Cameron to send his forgiveness to the woman who ruined his young life, and broke his loyal heart, is enough to touch the hardest man among us with the awful irony of such a message. "The doctors said Donald Cameron died of heart disease," he said with a sneer, "but I know better, and lay his death at your door as surely as if you had plunged a sword into his heart before my eyes. He went out to India with the hope of winning fame and glory for your sake, and for what purpose? To receive the news, just when his hopes were highest, that you had thrown him aside as you might toss aside a withered flower, and had married another for the sake of his millions! "And, in conclusion,, allow me to tell you, Mrs. Meredith, that I consider a woman who I has acted as you have acted is a creature who ought to be despised and shunned by all honourable men and women!" Then Phyllis Meredith turned and looked at him with a long, unflinching gaze. "I have listened to all you have said, she said, in a gentle voice, as if speaking to one she pitied. "And it is not for me to say whether you have judged me aright-but because you were his friend, and because your words were prompted by love of him—I forgive you." Then she went swiftly out of the room, and as she passed him Major Hamlin saw that her beautiful accusing eyes were dimmed with unshed tears. w < < A few months afterwards Major Hamlin found himself one evening at his club, half- unwittingly listening with intentness to a con- versation that was takkig place. "Oh. hadn't you heard about Phyllis Meredith ?" a pleasant-faced man was asking ing in surprised tones. "Why, I thought most people knew by this time. It all came out soon after Cameron's death, though how the affair got abroad nobody knows. You know how surprised everyone was when Phyllis married Elton Meredith, and how it was the general verdict that Fhe hadv thrown over Donald Cameron, and broken the poor chap's heart for the sake of Elton's money, and a lot I more such gossip. Well, after Donald died. some letters were found in a secret drawer of his, and forwarded to his people, and these letters contained the true reason why Phyllis married Elton Meredith. After Donald had been in India about a year, he wrote a letter to Ph. His in which he confessed tha.t he had been morriod for ai:,o"\t fire years to a woman he detested, and that he head over heels in debt from trying to meet -the exorbitant de- mands of his wife, and had really gone out to India in hopes that he'd be shot down in some skirmish. "Well, to come to the point, Phyllis con- fided in Elton Meredith, and he offered to pay all Donald's debts if she would marry him. And so, to save the name of the man she loved from dishonour, Phyllis consented to Elton's proposition, and they were married. "Donald Cameron only heard of Phyllis's self-sacrifice a few weeks before he died, and then he wrote straight away to her, but .the I letter was never posted owing to the careless- ness of a servant, and Phyllis only received it I a short while ago from some of Donald's people, who found it hidden among his papers. "A noble woman did you ,ay?" "Well, yes; I think Phylli; Meredith is a heroine in the truest senso of the word, and so do most people, but the affair has ruined her health, and she looks a more shadow of the bright young girl she was a few years ago. "Elton told me yesterday that the doctors had ordered her to the South of France, but, between ourselves, I don't belisre she'll ever take another journey in this world." And so it was. People are sometimes curious to know why Major Hamlin never by any chanca pronounces judgment on his fellow- creatures, and why he is always charitable towards women. towards women. But people do not know that the vision of two gently aocusing eyes and the tremulous face of the most bea-utiful woman Eris Hamlin has ever seen rises up before him whenever he is called upon to uass sentence on man, woman, or child.
QUIPS AND CRANKS.
QUIPS AND CRANKS. "Jenny," said a father to his daughter on the eve of her wedding, "it is a solemn thing to get married." "I know it father," she re- plied: "but it's a solemner thing not to get married."
