DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF YY ESTERN MAIL XCYCLOPJCDIC DICTIONARY. ITS THOROUGHLY ENCYCLOPAEDIC CHARACTER. It is hardly possible to attach too much im- portance to this feature of the work. It is not only a comprehensive dictionary, but also a complete encyciopasdia to all branches of knowledge. The editors have not rested con- tent with giving merely a definition of each word, but, wherever necessary, have supple- mented the definitions by short articles con- taining a concise description and history of that which the word represents. Especial efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the scientific information, the chemical and natural science nomenclature being brought up to the very latest date. ITS COMPREHENSIVENESS AND ITS WIDE- NESSOF RANGE IN POINT OF TIME. THE LARGE NUMBER AND PRACTICAL CHARACTER OF ITS ILLUSTATIONS. The numerous pictorial illustrations, although eminently artistic in character, are in no sense mere embellishments, but in every case help to elucidate the text. THE RICHNESS AND COMPLETENESS OF THE ILLUSTRATIVE QUOTATIONS. In both of these most important points the "Western Mail" Encyclopaedic Dictionary stands alone The editors have endeavoured to trace out and show to the reader, by illustrative quotations, the history and development of each word, and such a system is for the first time fully carried out in the present work. In no other dictionary will there be found such a richness and fulness of illustrative quota- tion. In the Western Mail Encyclopaedic Dictionary each meaning and each sub-division of each meaning is. in nearlv every case, illus- trated by a quotation, the whole work compris- ing a- collection of examples for the gathering together of which a very large-number of books of all classes and of every date has been specially read. The ordinary English Dictionaries have been content to register such words as are univer- sally Tecognised as "English." and are to be met with in the writings pnd conversation of every-day life. Hnt. beyond these. it is impos- sible to open any book or naner without meet- ing with words or a scientific or technical character the exact meanings of which, essen- tial as they are to the full understanding of the passMges in which they occur n" ordinary dictionary supplies. In such cases the reader or student must, consequently, have recourse to soni* dictionary or glossary specially devoted t') the collection and nxnlnnation of terms in use in the particular branches of science or art t" cnr-li -,r,4- V^lonT. The "Western Mail" Encyclopaedic Dictionary by combining in one :• these snecial glossaries or vocabu- laries. pfTpcta a double saving—an economy of time and of money. • OF ALL NEWSAGENTS OR DIRECT FROM rjpHE W PS TERN ]\/[ATL OFFI CE, (JARDIFF. THE MAN SHE DEARLY LOVED
THE MAN SHE DEARLY LOVED I SPECIALLY SET FOR THE EVENING EXPRESS- (CONTINUED FROM LAST FRIDAY). THE MAN SHE DEARLY LOVED. SYNOPBI3 OF PRECEDING CHAPTERS. 'rancis a.nd Felix Hastings, twin brothers, are in love with Vivian Price. They also hate each other bitterly. One of the twins is found murdered in a lonely tavern on the New Jersey meadows. Charles Beckwilh, a detective, sets out to find the murderers. He believes the dead man to be Francis, hut the living twin denies this. declaring himself to be Francis, saying Felix is in Chicago. ftnd laughing: at Beckwith's story of a dead man at the tavern. Tc body is spirited away from the inn during the detective s absence, and Beckwith goes to Chicago in search of the Hastings twin who is said to there He finds him. The two brothers are both. apparently, alive, Yet Beckwith has Been one of them lying dead. He returns to the Meadow Tavern, and, on closer March, strikes a clue to the mystery. CHAPTER VI. A NEW LINK IN THE CHAIN. The object which Beckwith had drawn from the ashes of the hearth was a broad flint arrow- head. The weapon was well-fashioned and unlike the usual rough, heart-shaped arrow-tips dug up m old Indian battlefields. v. OtM edge of the head was bluut. The other was kC811 as a knife blade. The sharpened side bore a few discoloured, brownish spots. Drawing a microscope from his pocket the I detective closely examined these biotches. "Blood he murmured. His mind flashed back to the ragged wound in the dead man's hands. Here s the story in a nutshell. lie cried aloud. "This is an African arrow-head. 1\ (' seen such before. It is poisoned. Felix brought this here to kill his brother. He held the flint with the sharp edge outward concealed in his hand. When Francis shook hands with his brother the poisoned edge bit deep into the poor ftllovv s palm and wounded him. Francis died of the poison. Felix laid him on the bed, then came back here to arrange for flight with Stein and Delia. He tossed the arrow-head into tae fireplace, thinking it would lie for years hidden among the ashes." Beckwith wrapped the arrow-head in h's hand- kerchief, carefully avoiding contact with '.he poisoned edge. "Where have I seen arrow-heads like this?" he wondered. "I have it! I remember perfectly now. There is a whole trophy of Oriental and savage weapons hanging over the mantel-piece at Miss Price's. I remember there were a lot of arrow-heads arranged in a circular pattern. with an assegai in the. centre. The search for Francis Hastings's body can wait. I must go baek to New York, gain admission at Miss Price's, and see if this arrow-head corresponds with those on the wall of her library." He re-mounted his wheel, and, bearing the imjMjriant bit of evidence in his pocket, scorched back toward New York. On the outskirts of Jersey City Beckwith heard a sharp swish'h!" and suddenly felt him- self riding with a collapsed tyre. The puncture was serious, and the detective angrily remembered he had no means of mend- ing it. His mending Ht was not on the wheel for the iirst time in a year, and JlaLllrally he met with his lirst accident on this day. "I can't lug this thing for a mile to the ferry and then all the way uptown," lie growled. "I'll have to leave it soniewehere and have it sent on." Beekwith had walked a short distance, when a sign caught his eye:—"J. Q. Porter, boarding and livery-stable." "The very place,v he cried. He had hired rigs of Porter in times past, and knew the man. A moment later he was talking with the red- faced, shirt-sleeved liveryman. "Sure, you can leave it here. Mr. Beekwith," assented Porter cordially. "Been on a long ride?" "No. Only out to the Meadow Tavern and back." "Meadow Tavern, eh? Say, what's gotten into everybody about goin' to that place lately? I never heard of any one goin' there till a few days ago. but now" "Why, who has been there besides me?" asked Beckwith in a voice he had trouble to control. "Mr. Hastings." "What did he want there?" "I dOlll. know. He hired a horse and buggv one night, and then again the very next even- ing." "But I didn't know either of the Hastings brothers was ;n America." "Mr. Hastings was here all right. On the night of-let me see-June 6 was the last time he drove out. Late at night it was. Then again the next night." "Are you sure June 6 was the date?" Porter took down a ledger and glanced over it. "YTcs," he said. "Here you arc. Mr. Hastings, horso and buggy, night of June 6. Ditto, night of June 7." "Which Mr. Hastings was it, Porter—Francis or Felix?" "How can I tell? No one can tell 'em apart." "How do you know he wont out to the Meadow Tavern?" "One of my men, driving down from Passaic, say my horse and rig slandin', tied behind the tavern, the first night. Besides, lie told mc so himself the second night. He didn't come back that second time till nearly daylight. He said he'd been out to the tavern to get somethin' he'd fOJ'got the night before, and-ob, I forgot!" "ForgOt what ?" "Mr. Hastings asked me not to say anvtliing about his goin' out there. Said it was to settle a bet or something, and he didn't want the story to get out." Decidedly Felix has less sense than I credited him with," said the detective to himself. Then aloud "Don't worry, Porter. I won't tell any oue. I'nscndforthewhectto-morrow. Good day." That afternoon Charlie Beekwith strolled care- lessly along Madison avenue past Miss Price's home. A block further 011 hp turned, aud. retracting his steps, passed the house again. He repeated this manoeuvre once more. and nt length had the satisfaction of seeing Miss Price, accompanied by Hastings, come down the steps of the house and start off down the avenue. Neither of them had seen him. "Good he muttered, "the coast is clear." Running up the steps of the Price house lie pressed the electric mIL "Is Miss Price at home?" "No, sir," replied the servant, who knew Bcck- willi to b3 an acquaintance of the family. "She just went out a few minutes ago." "1'111 so sorry," exclaimed Beekwith. "Can yo i ten me at what time she will come b)ck" I wished to see her specially." "I don't know, sir." "Well, perhaps, I can leave a note for her? May I step into the library ;:nd write one? Thanks. I know th:: way. As soon as he was alone for an instant Beck- v. ith stepped hurriedly over to where the trophy of savage weapons hung on the wall. Among kcrries, assess, toni thiwks, kreescs. Pi!d boomerangs was, the circle of poisoned arrow-heads On closer inspection the detective saw one of the heads was missing, giving the circle the look of a jaw from which a front tooth has been pulled. Drawing the arrow-head trom his pocket he held it against the open spaee. It titied into the gap perfectly, completing i I L'c circle I "I have enough evidence," remarked Beekwith as he left the house, "to warrant Feiix'g arrerl on a ehmw of murdering his brother. He drove .rcretly to the Meadow Tavern on the night of the 6111. Next morning Francis was found murdered there. Felix denied having been there. Xext night he drove there again. In the morning Francis's body was gone. In the ashes of the hearth there I find a poisoned arrow-head, smeared with dried blood. Francis died of a poisoned v oirnd in the hand. The arrow-head fits exactly into the circle of weapons I at the home of Felix's fiancee. Altogether. I fancy I've evidence enough to send Mr. Felix Hastings to his death for fratricide." Obedient to hi? premise, Beckwith turned his steps towards Dr. Burtoii's offiue. there to re- port progress. The physician listened with growing excite- ment to Bcckwith's,story. At its close he said — "Thai s a clever bit of work. What shall you do next ?" "Have search made for the body in the marshes and have Felix Hastings arrested." "Before that it would be well to find Dcila Stcino: her father." "Why so?' "Because toey alone can give positive evi- dence as to the crime. Failing them. Felix may slip through your fingers. The rest is all cir- cumstantial evidence, renumber." cumstantial evidence, renumber." "But for their own sakes thev won't show up or rjive evidence." l "Then thev must be found and forced to ¡ speak." "I wonder if Felix is tlill in communication,, withDetia. Stein- It's probable. It may be well to shndow him awhile in hopes of getting a chance at discovering her whereabouts. "Yes. After rendering Felix such a service she 11 hardly drop him so quickly. If she dreams of his approaching marriage with YiYÍan Price she may even be blackmailing or threatening him." "There's one thing I'm resolved on. remarked Beckwith as he took his leave. "Felix Hastings shall never mar'-y Vivian Price. That pure. sweet girl shall not be bound for life to a mur- derer. Whatever part she may now be forced to play in ilrs affnir. I cannot and will not .e- licve her concerned in any way with the slaying of Francis Hastings." True to his idea of shadowing Hasting. Beck- wilh went from Dr. Burton's to Washington- square. Crossing the square to the south s'de be entered the Benedict and asked for Mr. Hastings. "Which one, sir? Mr. Francis Hastings is at home." was the bell-bov s answer. "He said I was always to tell callers that he was in town, but that Mr. Felix Hastings was in Chicago." "Same old gag." growled Beckwith, Ün- pat:ently. "Well, it was Mr. Francis I wished I to see. You say he is at home-" "Yes, sir. but a lady is calling on him just at present. They are in the recopLion-room. Shall I t:'ke yov.r card in?" "No. Never mind. I'll call later." "A lady, eh?" mused the detective as he re-gained the street. "It'll do no harm for me to wait about here awhile, just the same, It can hardly be Miss Price." D¡¡;k had fallen and crowds of working men and shop girls were lounging about the square, waiting for the band concert to begin. Beckwith watched them idiy. Several persons entered or left the Benedict during the next half hour. At length a tall, well-formed woman came out alone and walked quickly toward Fifth- avenue. As she passed Beckwith the lamplight fell on her face. "It's Della Steiii exclaimed Beekwith nndef his breath. (To be continued.)
GOLD IN OILS.
GOLD IN OILS. Raphael, the great Italian ]<aii:;er. whose celebrated Biblieal pictures are worth fabulous sums of money, was not a rich man wnen young, and encountered some of the privations of life, like many another genius. Once when travelling lie put up at an inn and remained there. unable to get away through lack of lands to set tie his bill. The landlord grew suspicious that such was the ease, and his requests for a. settlement, grew more and more pressing. Finally, young Raphael, in de<p€raLion. re- sorted to the following device —Re carefully painted 1141011 a table in his room a. number of gold coins, and. placing the table in a certain light that gave a startling effect, he packed his few belongings and summoned his host. "There." he exclaimed with a lordly wave (,f his hand towards the table, "is enough to settle my bill and more. Now kindly show the way to the door." The innkeeper with many bows and smiles ushered his guest out, and then hastened back to gather up his gold. His rage and consterna-tion when he discovered the fraud knew no bounds, until a wealthy traveller. recognis ng the value of the art put, in the work, gladly paid him jE50 for the table.
