THE CUP WINNERS.
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] [NOW FIRST PUBLISHED. THE CUP WINNERS. BY J. HANMER QUAIL, AUTHOR OF "RUTH RAYMOND'S QUEST," "FENTON FRIARS" Ac. SPECIALLY SET FOR THE ZVEMNG tXPRLSS. CHAPTER XV. AN OLD ACQUAINTANCE ADVISES. It was a hotly-contested match, but the Blues Iron it fairly. The Rangers fought with the determination of men who felt that everything was at stake. They knew that they were in the final last season. It was a terrible dis- appointment to them that they just missed the Cup. but. with true British pluck, they rose superior to that defeat, and swore solemnly that they would have the Cup this season. And now they were beaten by the Blues by two goals to one. The Rangers were mortified and demoralised. They could not imagine what had cone over them. nor what had come over the Blues. Since the Blues signed on their new men, two months before, they had carried all before them. It looked a.¡; if the Astley team were playing under some lucky star which was going to light them to victory, and give them the Cup at the finish. Dave Forrester had gone to the'Crown Inn with Miles Prentice and Ned Ashley to talk C" tto arr<uigaR*ent& for the next week's match. I I They had congratulated themselves on their victory ovef the Rangers, and had discussed the chances of meeting the Ferndale Rovers in the final. The Rovers were making a record, and so were the Blijes, ai\d knowing ones were say. ing that the two tearts were fated to meet in the end. There were no matches to be played with any team but the Blues, for which the Rovers had the least regard, and there were none possible for the Blues other than a match with the Rovers which "ve the Blues any con. cern. It looked at this time as if fate had ordered that these two teams should remain unconquered to the last, and then fight the grand and decisive battle with each other. Dave Forrester and Miles Prentice talked over th' prospects of such a. match with Ned Ashley. They hoped it wouid come about, for they would have dearly loved to see the Blues and Rovers pitted against each other in the final. But, though Ned Ashley had been wildly eager to meet the Red,- and the Rangers, they noticed an nnacv. -ITQ whenever the Rovers were named. He joined with them in can- vassing the chances of a final battle with the Rovers, but showed none of the keen ardour and almost passionate longing for the fight which he had shown in the case of the other clubs. Both Dave and Miles wondered what this change of demeanour meant. The three left the Crown Inn together, and walked on as far as the first turn. "Good night, Ned. Keep 'cm all well in hand. We'll have the. Cup yet," said Forrester, as they were about to part "We 'n mak' a good fight for it, onyway," replied Ned Ashley, compelled to make some answer. Oh, we must have it. choose whatever comes. The Cup s for the Blues this year. There's t' be no mistake a.bont that," said Prentice, with an air of assurance. We'll see. We shan't be far out." Ned answered. He bad secret misgivings as to how the Blues would fare if they did happen to meet the Rovers. Oh! blow that! We must have the Cup. There's nobody else for it. It's ours—ours easily," said Prentice again. "Well.go.)d-night! We'll see. Good night!" said Ned Ashley, turning to go down the back lane. They parted. When Ned had gone a few paces he remembered that there was a pur- chase he intended to make at a shop a little .below the Crown Inn. As it was only half-past eight and the shop was but a. few yards dis- tant, lie turned back and walked briskly along the lane. He had only taken a few steps when a tall figure appeared to spring out of the hedge, at his left hand. Ned started and stopped. Doan be afraid. It's only me, Nick Fan, shaw," said a sepulchral voice, as the figure loomed up quite close to Ned Ashley. It was too dark for him to see the face of the man wh,) had spoken. Nick Fansliaw I know nobody of that name." said Ned, feeling uneasy at this strange meeting. Mebbe not. I know you well enough. It was me as sent Mark Burton up to Oakenside for you, an' got you joined on to the Blues." Oh! I weren't aware of that. I never heard a whisper o' anything o' the kind," Ned replied, wondering what was coming next. Mebbe so. That don't signify, anyhow. That's not my business now," replied the hollow voice. "Well, what may your business be?" asked Ned, measuring up the dim outline of what he thought must be a footpad. See. Missr. Asiney You wanten t' win th' County Cup, doan you?" I'd like to win it well enough," said Ned Ashley, coolly. "Jus" so. Missr. Burton brought you down f help win it for th' Blues. I know a' about it, for, as I towd you. I sent im for you." Well, what of it?" asked Ned, growing im- patient. Ncthin' mor'n this. If you want t' win that Cup you'll 'aye t' get out o' Ferndale Rovers. It's me as knows. Vfow, see, Missr. Ashley. Jus' you stan' me a pint at th' Crown an' I'll put you up to a good thing." Ned Ashley's first thought was to tell the man to go to perdition. Then lie thought that the price of a. pint of ale was of no moment, and this man, whoever he was. had made some vague allusions, which had aroused his curiosity. Yo' can 'are a pint an' welcome. Come on." said Ned, leading the way up to theidooi- of the Crown Inn. I They entered the house together, and Ned ordered a pint of :1.11:\ for his companion and a glass for himself. Then he led the way to the snug at the lower end of the bar. There! Sit down till the drink comes," said Ned Ashley, taking a seat. and motioning to his companion to do the same. The man sat down opposite to Ned. Now, for the first time, Ned had a full view of him. He was tall and haggard, and his coat was little better than that of a,, beggar. His high chock-bones, sunken cheeks, and jaw bones nearly protruding through the skin. gave him a repulsive and skeleton-like appearance. Ned shuddered as he found himself tete-a-tete with such an object. The barmaid brought the tankard and the glass of beer. There you are," said Ned Ashley, pointing to the tankard. 'Ere's luck!" The man clutched the tankard and haif emptied it at a mdp. IN-ell: what have you ^ot to say?" asked Ned Ashley, eager to hear the man's story. See. Missr. Ashley. My name's Nick Fan- sh.Ow." began the man" I know o' about these clubs, an' I know as th* Rovers '11 beat you if you an' t: play cm. if you doan mind." "Yo' thiuken they will, do yo'?" "They will. But I (loan want 'em to. Th' Rovers' committee done me a scurvey trick a. while ago, .in' I Mwe em one for it." Well, what's that got t' do wi' me?" asked Ned Ashley, nettled by the man's garrulity. I want t' see th' Blues lick 'em if they 'ave the chance, an' I tell yo' they will 'ave it. That's th' point Sii^hosen they'n do ave til' chance, what theu?" Tlioeie'i only one way they'll lick 'em, Mi""I". Ashley, an' I'll tell yo' what it an' "Go Gn, I'm a tistemn', said Neu, all atten- tion. Fanshaw took up liis tankard and drained it. Stajj" me another pint, Missr. Ashley; ius' another," he gasped, wiping his mouth with his I coat sleeve.- Doan min' if it'll do yo' ony good. But 'ave n't yo' 'ad enough for now?" asked Ned, shrinking from the pair of wildly rolling eyes within a yard of him "Boo! A pint's nowt. Stan' me the other pint, Missr. Ashley. "A' reet." Ned Ashley rang the bell and ordered the second pint of ale. Fanshaw grasped the tankard as the girl set it upon the table. Again he half-emptied it at a draught. Well' What else an' yo' got t' say?" Ned Ashley asked, thinking it was time he had done with his queer companion. The man leaned forward, planting his elbows upon the table, the tankard being between them. Resting his chin upon his two hands, he settled into a wild, exultant stare. Missr. Ashley." he began, with an apparent effort to speak in a whisper. Well." "Tek my word fer 't. Th' Blues 11 'ave t fight, th' Hovers afore theyn done. There's goin' t' be Rovers an' Blues left for th' final. Min', Nick Far)<-h\w a said it. An hearken t' me." He craned over and brought his sunken face to within a foot of xed Ashley. Go on." said Ned. See, Missr. Ashley. Th' Rovers is good t' beat th' Blues, an' they will, less yo' mind, 'Member, I've towd yo' "Well, well: what about it?" Well. well: what about it?" this. Doan yo' let 'em. I-doan want î see th' Rovers get th' County Cup. We're not goin" f let 'em 'ave it. We're goin' f' '<ive 'em th' ber>t drubbing they ever 'ad." rt plied Ned Ashley with feigned assu- rance. "Heaw," drawled Fanshaw. Wi' good play: 'ow el.,e?" Nav. nay. you're not. They're a match for I-o- Yo' may beat 'em, but not that way. 'Ow then?" This road. Yo' mnn get at th' soft side o' one or two of 'em." Ned started, and his eyes flashed at the sug- question. Fanshaw noticed the effect his words had on him. It's th' only road. I tell yo". An' why shouldnt yo Ain't. it done every day? See. Missr. Ashley? Mis.r. Burton as got qo to sign on fer th' Blues can do what 'e likes. What yo' want t' do 'is this. Get im t' let yo' offer Dan Fielding, an' Johnny Dorn. an' Jimmy Grice. an' Clem Hardy fifty poun or mebbe a underd poun', apiece. It s a th same to Missr. Burton. Ask ni for a underd poun' for each. Tell im they can ave a 'underd poun' each If th' Blues win th' Cup. You 11 get it that way. an' no else." Ned Ashley frowned and pursed his lips in disgust. "I tell yo' it's th' only way. Offer them four chaps a 'underd poun each, an Rovers "ll drop out by th' semi-final- Y()U'n see." It ain't my kin" o' thing at a'. We mean t) beat em fair," said Ned Ashley, shrugging his shoulders. Then you wont beat em. Missr. Ashley. You won't beat 'e111. Min'. Nick Fanshaw's told yon' Ned sat back, thinking- There now, Missr. Ashley. I've put yo' on a good thing. Stan' me another pint, there's 1 a good sowl." Ned remained motionless. Mi-sr. Ashley! Missr. A«hley!" persisted Fanshaw, pulling Ned's coat slee\ e. "Yes, yes! What now? Stan' me another pint—do. fer 'eaven's sake." 'Ere. I ui going. You n 'ad enough. Come on! Ere's a.shilling for yo Ned rose from the seat. and led the way out of the snug. Fanshaw followed him closely. They passed out of the Crown together, and walked along the lane towards the turn. Ere's the shilling." said Ned, taking the coin from his pocket, and handing it to his com- panion Good luck t' you! Now. do as I tell yo', Missr. Ashley. You 11 get th' Cup if yo' do. If I can 'elp yo' at a' ask for Nick Fanshaw. Yo IL fin' me 'ere 'r at Ferndale. They n tell yo' wheere I am at th' Saddle. "Aw 'reet. Good neet! Be careful!" said Xed, as he turned down the lane. Good night an' good luck! Come back an' a pint wi' me." Fanshaw made as if he would have returned to the Crown. "No. no' Go home, now; go home," said Ned. persuasively. 0' reet, Missr. Ashley. Doan min' me. Good night' Nick Fanshaw walked bark towards the inn. Ned Ashley walked slowly down the lane on Ih" way to his lodgings. He was thinking over the suggestion which Fanshaw had made- to him. [To be Continued On Sat unlay Next.]
PLEASE RING THE BELL.
PLEASE RING THE BELL. A Welshman walking through a fashionable. street in London noticed on a door a bell. At the side of the bell were these words, "Please ring the bell." He went and rang the bell. In a second a powdered little footznan appeared, and asked him what lie wanted. "Nothing." said t he Welshman. "But I rang the bell because it says so." "Oh," said the fooinian. with a smile, "I see you come from the country where naiuiy- goatf, grow on gooseberry bushes." Yes." said; the Welshman. "But in London there are more wonderful sights. You have only to ring I a bell, and a monkey pops out."
