SYNOPSIS.The French Minister of War receives in audience Colonel Vallenot, who explains to him in detail the result of his examination of the wrecked house of General de Tremont. Tremont had }-ut recently dis- covered a new explosive, the possession of which would give absolute supremacy to any country. Under mysterious circum- stances his house at Vanves had been blown up. The General, it was found. had been stabbed to death before the explosion. On the evening of the disaster, he had enter- tained two unknown persoi-a-a, man called Hans, and a, woman known as Baroneas." The woman is suspected of being a foreign spy. who had won Tremont's affection for the purpose of obtaining possession of the secret of the new explosive. The woman was known to have left before the explosion; the man not until afterwards, one of his arms having been found in the ruins. Tremont is related to the great banking firm of Baradier and Graff, and the story proceeds to connect the members of that firm with its sensational and tragic inci- dents. There is also brought into the story one Lichtenbach (son of a Jew, who made huge sums during the Franco-German War), a powerful financier, who. having one time been a suitor for Graff's sister, now Madame Baradier, is shown to be animated with the most deadly animosity towards the members of that firm. In an interview with the Minister of War, Baradier expresses the sus- picion that Lichtenbach is at the bottom of the mystery. He also mentions that his son Marcel possesses the formulae for Tre- mont's marvellous explosives. Baradier learns through Marcel that the man known as Hans waa regarded by Tremont as a savant and a foreign Nihilist. "Was he a Russian?'' queries Baradier. "I do not know; his name was Hans." answers Maroel. "Hans!" exclaimed Baradier. "That was the name of the man whose arm was torn off! It is the name on t a ring worn by the man who caused the explosion of the honse at Vanves. This is the first ilaph of light." Marcel retires to one of the works owned by his father's firm a-t. Ars, and there pursues his investigations. It, is suggested that he is in peril from the machinations of the "woman of mystery" who had failed to secure her ends in the case of General Tre- mont. Baudoin, the late general's valet, persuades the authorities to suspend for a time their investigation of the crime, and constitutes himself personal bodyguard of young Marcel. CHAPTER IX. (Continued.) "Well! We will throw some light on the matter. If I can succeed in laying hands on this gang, the Minister of War will be de- lighted. After all, Baudoin, if you are not mistaken, this affair is simply the result of the attempt at Vanves. We have to deal with a. whole company, and an experienced one, too. which has already bad a crow to pick with us. Follow me." Raising the sash, he placed one foot on a chair, and mounted on to the roof. Baudoin imitated him. A large leaden pipe surrounded the building. This they followed, until they reached the front, overlooking the courtyard twenty feet below. Laforet pointed out to his companion a small zinc roof below the first floor. It was the covering of a shed. used as a saddle-room. "Now. then, our friends are in the room I where you eee that lighted window, above this roof. If you can get there unnoticed and jj without making the slightest noise you may I! see from the roof into the interior, certainly .( you could hear." J Baudoin leaned over into the courtyard, j looking for some means of descending. j "How can I get there? Suppose I the attaching cramp-irons became loose, both j pipe and man would fall to the ground with a [ terrible clatter. The alarm would be raised, j and the consequences of such an accident might be disastrous. But his anxiety did not: last long. At the end of a few seconds, Laforet had reached the roof, and was lying there, extended at full length. Baudoin thereupon followed a-nit. On reaching the bottom of the window, where the meeting was being held, he knelt down and looked. Through the muslin of the curtain, the human forms appeared indistinct, like the silhouettes of a badly focussed magic lantern. According to the position he tvy-s in, and his distance from the light, each of the three men assembled appeared either like giant or a dwarf. One of them had risen from his seat, and wa" walking to and fro. Accord- ing as he approached or went away from the j window, a voice, distinct or indistinct, reached Laforet's ears. The latter, without turning: round, drew Baudoin nearer and whispered in his ear: "It is difficult to see. but you may hlear. Come a little nearer and listen." Baudoin obeyed, and listened attentively in the effort to discover the object of his keen, curiosity.
