j —— J PUBLISHED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT. A WOMAN OF WILES. A Story of Hearts and Diamonds. By ALICK MUNRO. [COPYRIGHT.] CHAPTER XX. AN OATH ON THE OBLONG BOX. But while Fort lay on his back, ex- hausted, Hetty had broken the mated hinges of the box with a. shacp itone, and was raising the lid. It was high me for Bloxham and me to take our share in he game. "Cover the widow with your gun, for form's aake!" I said. "Never mind Fort." We ran quickly down to the water level. and got to within ten yards of Hetty before she heard us coming. With a, cry she snapped own the lid of the box. and turned and faced us. I pointed my revolver at her heart. "Hands up!" I said, "or I fire." Mere clap-trap, of course; for naturally I did not mean to fire, and she knew that I did not; but all tho same I was interested to eee that she did throw her hands up. The response to my command came quite auto- matically, and, I thought, involuntarily; and it struck me that perhaps, at some time in the past, she had heard the same command before, when to have disobeyed it might really have meant death. However, almost before the movement -was completed, she let her hands drop ago-in, saying with-a laugh: "Oh. you! Don't be absurd!" "Do you know. Miss Williams," I said, still keeping the pistol levelled at her. "that I really think it's my trick this time?" And then I, too, laughed for the situation was a. singularly pleasing one. Hetty faoed my levelled pistol with a. smile; but behind the smile there lay a. look of the most poignant disappointment, which, She actress though she was, she cpnld not wholly conceal. For she was beaten? and it was I who. held the winning hand now. The box of treasure lay at her feet; the diamonds were almost in her pocket; but shel could not stretch out her hand to put them there. Her chance was gone, and she knew it; for the diamonds were Neenah's. not here; andtl was there to see that Neenah got them. It was not the pistol only, which she knew I should not tUte-thoogb the pistol was, a-fter all, some- thing, since she had only a dagger; it was simply the presence of that oblong box which gave me my overwhelming advantage. So long as neither party knew where the dia* monds were, either party might hope to out- wit the other in the search for them f but now that we both knew. now that either of n4 could. merely by moving a. foot, touch the box which contained them. there was no ques- tion as to which of us must take them home. Short of murdeiringboth Bloxham a.nd me. there was no- way by wbioh she oould retain them now. And even, the double murder would hardly have served, for Portugal is a law-abiding country on the whole, and wonld not have tolerated a crime like that, com- mitted within twenty milee of its capital. As I said before, the widow should have taken her whole household with her when the drove away in the night-time. That little note, which the Portuguese maid handed to me last night, had just made all the difference. So, though she laughed, her eyes shone angrily through her laugh; and the whiteness of her elfish face was marred by tired lines. which showed that the excitement of a. long struggle was over, and had ended in defeat. "Before I lower my revolver." I said, "will you please hand over your dagger?" I "You are becoming prudent!" she flashed out. "It is, perhaps, about time." "I hate to expose even the atmngna to I temptation." I replied, with a, smile. "How do you know I have a. dagger?" "I don't know. I guess. You were not ex- pec ting an attack last mighty but you had a. dagger ready. I daresay you have contracted I the prudent habit of carrying one always." "Another recent development-yovere get- ting clever!" she laughed scornfully, as she J drew a little jewelled stiletto from her bosom, I and handed it to me. I took it with a bow. I oould afford. to ignore the snub. "It's a frail little bit of steel," I said, ae the dagger lay across my palm. "Quite a lady's ignore the snub. "It's a frail little bit of steel," I said, as the dagger lay across my palm. "Quite a lady's weapon, isn't it?—-almost too dainty for use! But I have had proof that it o»n strike a good blow." "Will the man die P" She shot the question out sharply, and her tone of scornful defiance was gone. Instead, there was a note of strong anxiety, which it pleased me to hear. She had had a night to think over what she had done. and she re- gretted it. But she knew how truly she had struck. "Yes," I eaid cruelly, "he will die." Her eyes grew boared, and a quiver shook her lips; and when I taw that I relented at once, and added softly: "Sometime." "What do you nM<m?" she cried. "Are yon playing with mer "I say he will die sometime. We all mnst, you know. Bat I don't think that, in his ease, your hand has hastened this inevitable end. You aimeB at his heart, and hit his tobacco." "He was lucky!" she said, with a careless- new which was exaggerated and palpably assumed. "So I told him." "But I'm very glad." she added. with an I earnestness which was wholly real. "I hoped you would be. .but—" I said drily, "I could not from past experience be quite sure, you know." 1 She shivered, and then gave me a steady look, saying quietly: "I told you once I oould cause a. tragedy, didn't I? I meant that I could cause it, and not repent afterwards, and-I thought I oould. But last night, after I had struck at that man's heart, I-well, I found I couldn't!" And with a. curious little gesture, she added: "Does that mean that I am a coward?" "It means," I said-and 1 tried to speak kindly, for I pitied her—"that you are less of the 'devil' than Fort says you are, and more of the 'woman' I have always believed you to ¡be. And I am delighted to find that I am right." "Thank you!" she said softly, and then added: "Don't you think it's time we weve looking after Mr. Fort?" Now I had forgotten Fort; and. cwiously enough, lie had not done anything yet to force himself upon any attention. He had not taken the slightest notice of the inter- ruption which Charlie and I had made 'by our arrival, and he was lying now just as he had thrown himself down, with his head pillowed on his arm, and his eyes closed. "I believe the beggar's asleep!" said Charlie. "Hey! you, Fort! Wake up, man!" But even at this summons Fort did not move. He was asleep. We shouted his name again, and made the echoes ring with it, but he did not hear. The prospect of getting him off the rock without farther injury to his damaged leg bad been remote enough in the beginning, and we saw tha-t every moment was making it more remote. For the tide was rising steadily, amd would soon cover the rock again- The water between us and him swept one way and the other in strong rushes, as the swell entered and was sucked back again. He bad been able to ewim on the far Bide of the rock, hot neither he nor we could do so here. "Try & revolver Aot," I said. "It that doesn't wake him, one of as will have to do as he did1—jump!" "1 got my 'blue' for jumping at Oxford," said Charlie, as he cooked his pistol, "bat, all the same. I devoutly hope that thi.and he fired-"will do the trick!" The shot, in the confined space of the Bocca do In/erao. made a. most terrific din, and Fert raided his head s'igbtly. Then a wave, ratber bigger than its predecessors. surged round las rock; and the spray of it slapped him in the face. He sat up, and looked across at us sleepfly. "Hullo!" he said, when his mind at last awcke to the fact that Hetty had unexpected and unwelcome companions. "What's hap- pened. now?" "Lota of things," I said cheerfully; "but you can hear about them afterwards. How do you propose to join. us?" "Eh?" "How are you going to get back, you fool P Wake up! You oan't jump with that knee of yours, you know. What are you going to do?" "Swim, I suppose," he said stolidly. "Swim?—rot! You'd be smashed to a jelly I if you tried it, on this side. Here, catch the rope!" I "What for?" I "Oatch it! Now "bind the end of it round I your body, and throw the other end to me. We must trans-ship you by the same path the box j came by. Get ready to fend him off from the | side, Charlie. Better lie down, hadn't you? Now, Fort. wait for the slack-water, just after the swell passes, and tumble in sharp when I (give the word. Beady? Wait half-artninute— j now!" j Fort did as he was told, with a kind of mechanical obedience. He could hardly stand. but he slid into the water promptly as I gave ¡ him the word. I hauled him across with the rope at .the very moment when the water was quietest, and Charlie caught him in his arm, and dragged hfm up on to dry land with one huge pall. He had escaped with nothing more serious than an additional bruise or two; and that was greater luck than L for one. had I dared to hope he would have. He sat down beside the box. and when his eye fell on it he seemed to remember, and glanced up at me inquiringly. I answered his ut spoken question with a laugh, and then he tamed to Hetty. She made a little grimace of disappointment and resignation, at which he smiled and shrugged his shoulders. It was all very pretty pantomime; bdt -perhagis OhMRe and I were in baiter position than the other pair to appreciate the full humour of the situation. "Come," I NLid, "it isn't so bad as it might have been, you know. You two can fairly c:aim salvage dues; and I daresay Miss Mon- crieff will be prepared to consider the claim, if you put it nicely, and are not too greedy. But- we can talk about all that afterwards. Meanwhile, it's high time we were leaving this interesting spot, if we don't want the tide to cut us off. Fort, can you walk?" "Yes, with somebody's arm to lean on." All right. rn help you till we come to the level. Charlie, you take the valuables." Charlie bent down to pick up the oblong box. and. as he did so, the butt of his revolver stuck invitingly out of his jacket-pocket. Hetty saw the invitation, and was tempted by it. But I had seen it at the same moment, and her fingere closed on the revolver as mine closed on her wrist. "We're too chivalrous," I said grimly. "You're a woman, but we shall have to ask you to do the heavy work, after aJl. Let go, please! Thank you. Now, Charlie, we'll re- arrange things a bit. The lady will carry the luggage, and yon'll walk behind her (with your revolver in your band, mind), to see that she doesn't fall. I'm sorry to be so ungallant, but you see it's necessary." She drew herself up. and I thought she was going to refuse angrily to do what I said. But the next moment, with one of her charac- teristic and bewildering sudden changes, she let the defiant look vanish from her eyes in a. laugb, as she said: "Why don't you always take that tone? Bully me, Mr. Delabere—bully me hard—always bully me! I like you when you do tha.t. There!"—she added, as she took the box in her arms—"you see? Even well enough to obey orders, and play the beast of burden for you without a. murmur!" "I promise." I said dryly, as I helped Fort to his feet, "to act strictly on this advioetor the future." "Yes, do!" she retorted; "with me and with Neenah. and with every other woman—if you are wise!" "With Neenah, too?" I sabol smiling now. "Yes. with Neenah too! Vm pleased with you just now, in spite of things: so. before I repent, I'll tell you a secret, and I won't tell Neerah I told '-WO all—every single woman of tib—to** ths am who bullies us!' And then she led the way over the rocks with her burden. Charlie followed her, and Fort and I fol- lowed Charlie. &he set us a good pace. making little of the encumbrance in her arms, and climbing lightly, gracefully, and with never a stunible or a false step. Charlie prudently kept within touch of her, but he had to put his pistol in his pocket again to do it; and. as for Fort and m6. we soon dropped behind. Just before the leaders came to the rocky cleft, which gave the path to the high ground above, I called to Charlie to wa.t for us. He put out his hand to stop Hetty, but she shook him off proudly, and I heard her tell him that, though he had been made her policeman, he needn't overact the part. Then she laid the box down. and sat upon it. Is Fraser with the carriage?" I called out to her. "No. So you can come along boldly, lik* a br&W hoy!" she answered, with a laugh. "Who is looking after the horses?" "Nobody." "Is that true?" I asked Fort in a low tone. I thought it probably was, because the fact, that they had stayed to fasten the horses up would account for the few minutes' delay which had occurred before they had come down the rock pathway. "Yea" he said; "they're unyoked and,/ tethered behind." "Go on, Charlie," I shouted. "We'll merit at the top." A But if the red-haired coach man was not with the carriage, where was ho? ijPft behind to guard Neenah, probably. I turned to Fort and asked him angrily why he had consented to such an arrangement, when be might have stayed himself, and let the other man come with Hetty; "You and I are enemies bow," I said bit- terly; "but I did rely on you not to let that red-haired brute have the guarding of Miss Moncrieff. I suppose that's what he's doing. confound him!—and you, too, for allowing it!" "I should not have allowed it." said Fort quietly. "I loathe/the beast, and think as badly of hi* ae you do, or worse. His com- pany is a contamination to any woman. But that's not what lie is doing." "men what is he doing? And where^ N^ah?" 1 impatiently. •►She's all right." said Folt. "and he isn't where near her." And ften he told me that Fraser had gone to make arrangements for immediate flight from Portugal, in case it 8 uu tarn °ot that the man whom Hetty stabbed last night was seriously injured. Hetty and Fort meanwhile were to get the jewels from the Bocca, and then meet Fraser at a. place arranged between them. They did not know, Fort explained, that Neenah had told her secret to me too. or they would have taken steps to prevent our surprising them. Then he, too, asked me anxiously whether the man had been killed. (To be continued to-morrow.)
