PUBLISHED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT. A WOMAN. OF WILES. A Story of Hearts and Diamonds. By ALICK MUNRO. ECOPYJRIGHITJ. CHAPTER XVIII.—(Continued.) "The senhora left home half-an-hottr ago," said the maid. "Then I will see the Sentaora Neenah! Quick, girl t" "Tlie Senhora Neenah went too." was tbe answer. "I am alone in the house." Charlie was paying the driver. I calleff to him not to let the man go yet. It seemed that Hetty had been rather quicker than we had expected in flying from the consequences of her crime. Perhaps shie and Fraeer were on their way out of Portugal already. But whether that were 80, or whether they had merely gone to dig HP diamonds, they haud taken Neenah with them. So we must follow! "Where have they gone?" I shouted to the maid. "I do not know," she answered; "but I have a. letter for the sen bar. If the aenhor will wait for a moment, I will come down." Alter a space which seemed an a«e, but was probably not more than about two minutes, she appeared at the door, and gare me a note which she said tha.b Neenah had slipped into her band just aa &ha stepped into the carriage. A present of money, and a gesture asking silence, had accompanied the passago of the note from hand to hajid, and the girl had gathered that Neenah was in trouble of some sort, and did not wiah the others to eee what ehe did. The others. it appeared, -were Hetty, Pra«er, and Fort; and tho, quartette h^d driTen off five minrrtea after, I Fraser had brought Hetty back from some- where else—the girl did not know where—in thte carriage. The was addressed to me at the Hotel Braganza, and th<^ girl said she would have brought it to me there in the morning if I had not happened to come to- night. As I tore open the envelope I asked whether Neenah looked distressed, and whether she seemed to go unwillingly. "Shle went unwillingly," said the girl; -but she did not seem distressed. She looked angry, sen h or. It was the Senhor Fort who looked distressed." "Then there has been a. row," I muttered, "and perhaps Fort will help her." The letter was short. and ran as follows: — "The Place is the Bocca do Inferno. The others know; follow them if yon care to. I am a prisoner for the present, but I don't know where they are taking me.—Neenah." Now I knew the Rocco do Inferno, and I wondered how any treasure could be con- ceaJed them. It ia one of the show places of the Portugaese coast—a natural rock arrh. way, through which the sea flows into a. great pit in the limestone headland. It is a little bit to the north of the Tag-as estuary, and is a. grea.t spot for picnics. I turned -to Oharlie. "I'm going back to Cascaes," I sa-id. "Are YOU game to come too? Cocheiro, will you drive ua back to Oaaeaes to-night?" Wm. senhor, for ten zrdlreifl.1" said tbe man, L with a grm. "You shall have twenty! Jump in. Charlie!" "Hum!" eaid Chafflie, as be took his seat beside me, "the fellow's stables are at Cas- beside me, "the fellow's stables are at Cas- caes; be would be well Paid at four mil! He's a wise man, though, to make his fortune while he can. What are we going back to Oascaes for?" I showed him Neenah's letter. "The Bocca do Inferno is on the other side of Gascaee," I said. "They win get there first, but it's the second journey for their horses, and the first for ours. We shan't be long behind them!" "By Jove, she's told them!" cried Charlie, I as he read th; letter. "Yes," I said gleefully, "but she has told me too! That's much more important." The truth was that this brief note from Neenah had improved my spirits wonderfully. The news it contained was disquieting enough in all conscience; for it meant that the enemy now knew everything. and it hinted that Neenah was, in epite of that fact, in danger still. But she had written to me! She had turned to me for help when she was in trouble, and that waa something which wse worth all the rest. "They won't get to the Bocca, first," said Charlie presently. "We shall be there before them." "I a.m afraid not. I wonder what tbeyll do I' with Neenah." "That's just it!" he explained eagerly. "They won't take her with them to the Bocca, yoa may be sure. They'll do thai; part of the job without her. But they'll have* to take her somewhere, so we shall get to the Bocca do Inferno before them. What are we going to do j when we're there?" "Wait for them. see what they do, and then follow them to find Neenah," I said. "And if tluey get the diamonds?" "Well, since the diamonds are Neenah's, we'll have a. try to rescue them for her. But the first tiling is to rescue Neenah herself; the dia.monds must come second to that." I "Ohf" said Charlie, this time with an enor- mous yawn. "That's programme, ia it? Sounds as though it might prove exciting. Sounds as though it might prove exciting. Meanwhile, we've a couple of hours' drive in front of TM, so I'm going to sleep. You'd better do the a&me; it's a.11 the chance of rest ■wo shaJl get." "I can't sleepl" I told torn impatiently, ■wo shaJl get." "I can't sleepl" I told him impatiently, "Where can they have taken NeenahP" "Don't know. Good-night!" said Charlie, and in five minutes he was snoring. Well, Charlie was not a. lover, so he could sleep. I was, so I kept awake, and thought of my love and her peril. But she had writ/ten to me—she had written to me! I told myself again and again that it was to me that she had turned in her difficulty, and in that thought I dared to make light of her anger which had gone before. What did her anger matter now? It was curable, since it had not prevented her from writing that little note to me. True, the note said that she had carried out her threat, and had told Hetty that the place was the Bocca; there wa.s no sur- render there. But there was a. surrender in the fact that she had told me too! I could have laughed aloud: but I should have waked Bloxham, and then I should have had to tell him what I was laughing at- He would not have understood; he would have thought that Neenah repented of her foolish sacrifice of the diamonds, and wanted me to help her to retrieve the mistake which a fit of temper had betrayed her into. Nonsense! I knew better than that! 1 There was one thing. I felt sure that sbØ had not told under compulsion, and, (as the necessity for compulsion did not ar!Je I till after that dagger-thrust of Hetty's), she^ 1 told some time in the earlier part of the day. Between the time of Hetty's arrival frolft 0<\8- caes to-night and the second departura e- diately afterwards there would have 110 opportunity for voluntary confide^8"» and for overcoming even the most bsif-liearted opposition the interval was too øJiort; those five minutes must have been croirded enough without that. Besides, the ma,idJl1a,jd that the Senhora, Neenah looked with Hetty probably—and they would Ot he. likely to have succeeded in getting ker eA'l:>'f't hy anger- ing her. No. she had told tteiil earlier in the day—on the receipt of sof letter telling her to keep silent. perhaps-111 any case before Hetty went to Oascaes all. Then why had Hetty wasted time by Paying the masquerade in the roolette-rooms iLgzLin, when she had, at last got tall the Ogrd's for tho other, and bigger game in her feauds? It was puzzling; bat. then, so was tb6 faofcof her hampering her own movements to night by keeping Neenah j with hler—unless, indeed, øbØ Mshed to pre- sent the possibility of asf communication with me. Well, the little FOrt-tiguese maid had seen to that. The widolr Wedderbnrn should have taken tho whole Of her household with her! Those two btonrs in carriage went very slowly. Bloxham bravely on, and irritated' me by not frying time with the hoof- heats of the h<JXtlÐ'. which were now doing little more than st-eady jog-trot. It was no use to tell the JOa-11 to drive faster, for his cattle were tirel With thieir mad gallop into I. Lisbon, and ooed Hot have done it. The only oonsolation .8 that Hetty's horses must be still more f;itEd.. We pull^ at last at Casoaes, and I woke Charlie. ^Ile driver asked where he was to take nstO. "We'll get out here." I S^id- "Ob' him take us on to the Bocca," said Charl'e- "I'm dog-s!eepy!" Tbe Bocca was two miles further on; but, in «l>ite of Charlie's yawning protest, I in- OiO" on walking. He let me have my way, b11t he grumbled sadly about those two miles. /lIte} aswerted ag-ain and again that he was ErQre that we should easily get there before the others; so that there was no need for being so confoundedly cautious, was there? That might be true; I was inclined to think it was true; but the calculation depended upon Hetty's having actually done something which we thought she must do. She had a. way of upsetting calculations of that sort, and if we drove up carelessly to the Bocca, and found her party there in possession, the result would probably be a fight. For the issue between us had arrived at that sta^e when a'blow comes sooner than a word; and, as HeitXL_probably believed that she had killed a. mall in our "sight to-night already, she would stick at nothing to get us out of the way for an hour or two, so that she might dig up the treasure undisturbed, and then make her escape. Now I WM ready enough for A fight at the proper time, and, in fact, rather looked forward to the chance of leaving my mark on that ugly Scotchman who had tipped me into the Tagns; but the prope" time was certainly not now, when there was every possibility that Neenah might have to share the danger of a chance ahot in the ecrimmage. For, after all, as I pointed out to Charlie, how did we know that they had not taken her with them to the Bocca? "If they have," he asked, as he tramped resignedly along the road, "shall you try to get her away?" "Well, yes!" I said with a laugh. "You may take it that I shall!" Did he suppose I should be willing tamely to leave her in their hands Of course, I would try to get her away! "Then," he observed complacently, "If she is there. I think there's going to be a fight, you know, in any case." CHAPTER XIX. THE BOCCA DO INFERNO. The words Boooa. do Inferno mean, in Por- tuguese, the Mouth of Hell; and in a westerly storm I have seen the reason for the name. But to-night the atmosphere stood balanced in a breathless cahn; and a gentle pwell, moving lazily on the Atlantic, rose and fell softly in the moonlight, as though it were no more than the rhythmic eleep-breathing which showed that the great. quiet ocean was. after all, no dead thing. The waves which rolled in through the arch of the Bocca were no more than shoulder high; and each one a.s it entered rose in a long even onrl, which thinned till the moonbeams shone through its glistening edge. and then fell in a line of froth, like new milk. The place is a huge sea-cave, whose roof has been lifted bodily off, leaving only a narrow bridige over the arched entrance on the west. The floor of the cave is a confused mass of sharp tangled rocks, amongst which the water eddies and swirls incessantly; and even at the. lowest tide only the jagged tops of its cruel teeth are uncovered. The limestone headland. of which this great pit forms a part, is pierced throughout all its mass with narrow water-worn shafts, leading to the air above; and when the Atlantic in its rage is sending in heavy billows from the westward, these in heavy billows from the westward, these shafts spout like thte blow-holes of a wounded whale, and the jets of water rise as giant fountains, to break in spray a. hundred feet or more above. Then. indeed, the Bocca do Inferno does not belie its name. We stood ou the platform of rook above, and gazed into the froth and babble below us; for. thoagh the night waa stall, the gentlest puise of the ooean is enough to raioe an un- easy tarmool amongvt these boriJder teetltf of i k Hell's Month. j "The others haven't arrived yet," said Charlie. "Arq we going down?" "We must," I said. "Neenah said. that the place was the Bocca, and that must mean, down there. The rocks up here are as bare as the back of your hand; there's no piaeo amongst th!em where treasure oould lie hid even lor a month, to say nothing of a, hun- dred and something years. But down below there, under that soap-suddy stuff, it seems to me it could be hid very well." "So well," agreed Charlie, with a laugh-, "that I don't see how any man's going to find it. even if he knows to within a yard where to look!" "A woman will," I said. "Wait and Me." In calm weather there is one-way by which! it is possible to descend from the cliffe above to the water-level. A cleft in the. northern wall gives a. precipitous path downwards, hut the sides and floor of this cleft are worn smooth and treacherous by the water, which, except in the greatest calms, dishes up it, after the entrance of every wave through the archway. To-night it wa« practicable to tlio bottom, and Charlie and I made our way down until we met a ledge nf jvjck which ran horizontally along the eastern wall, fronting the opening of the archway. We clambered along this ledge for about thirty ynrcis, aiict found a, plac; where we could rest in tho shadow of a spire-like pinnacle. "This will do," I said. "Now we can wa4t tó" receive callers!" The inoou had sunk to within a few degrees of the horizon, and was shining in straight through the arch as through an open door. Outside she drew a long path of flashing silver on the quiet surface of the water, and the curl of every comber was outlined sharp like polished metal against her light. Inside she threw up the whole picture of pointed rooks and unquiet water in vivid contrasts of light and shade, so that, by a curious optical effect, the details of the scene ap »..ired actually sharper than they would have been in the full sunlight. If Hetty and her friends had any interesting work to do in this fairies,' cavern, it. would be easy enough for us to their every movement.. "Tell yon what!" said Bloxham presently. "The trouble will be paid for. even if they don't come. It's the prettiest and about the eeriest scene I ever set eyes on. Sleepy, Del?" he added, with a yawn so luxuriously vocal that its echoes would have bet.rayed a8 at once bad there been any one within quarter of a mile to bear it. "No," I said. "But. if you are, yoa can sleep, ril take the first wa.tch." "Right T' be answered cheerfully, all he curled himself into a corner. "I ll take you at your word. You can waken me if you hear anything. <9ap your hand over my mouth, and rn promise to wake quietly." (7* be ooartinued on Monday^
