OUR SHORT STORY.
OUR SHORT STORY. I THE STRONG BOX. CHAPTER I. j I am about to relate to you tlie story of a j box and its contents. In these modern j days I doubt whether it would be considered.; a st.ivng box at all, although it was used as such by a Turkish Pasha, from whose house at Constantinople it was taken by a Venetian lord and carried thence by him to Venice. The Venetian lord did not gain possession of it without much peril, but by rut and thrust of good Toledo blade, when. followed by the wolves of. liia Venetian company, ho forced his way through the harem of Ali Mustapha. Vizier (to whom Allah, although he oft cried "Allah Akbar," was not merciful), into the treasure-1 room and slew tbe Vizier and his sons, capturing thereby a rast amount of treasure -gold chains, ruby necklaces, diamonds, gold and silver ware, and many other things of price that make glad the hearts of soldiers and fill the empty coffers of wealth-craving men. Amid these treasures they found also a box or case of which this present story trt ateth. Now, the Lord Francesco Contarini, being a man of curious mind, was attracted to this box by its strangeness and strength and pecu- liarities of design, and laid hold on it as his share of the booty. To this his comrade-in- arms and co-leader with him of the company, Count Edgardo Visconti, made objections, and the matter was accordingly settled by lot, neither knowing what the contents of it were. for it had no keyhole or any signs of a spring or clasp whereby it might be opened. Count Contarini drew the winning lot, and appro- priated his prize, with other spoil that fell t.) hi" share, and then, Ali Mustapha's house having been burned, and he, poor believer in the Prophet, being left headless, and. alas! legless (a sad case in which to challenge Paradise), the company of soldiers and their two noble leaders left the spot, to continue their plundering and killing elsewhere. During the remainder of his stay in Con-' stantinople the count had no opportunity of examining the box further, occupied as he was by the duties of his command and the many carts of warfare. When the war ended it was taken, with other treasures and spoils cap- tured by him. to his vessel, and so conveyed to Venice. Arrived at his palace, on the canal near the Bridge of Sighs, it was placed in his private chamber—on an old oaken cabinet, locking insignificant enough in that grand, gloomy apartment. It was a box about one foot square and about ten inches in height, made of a quaint carved ironwork, bound with broad bands of rcugh gold. But outwardly the most striking feature was a large red rose worked in rich mosaic, which stood in the centre of the front, beautifully carved and with a most natural and striking appearance. Round it, in rude Roman characters, was cut the motto, "Quid mortem congemis ac fles?" ("Why bewail and bemoan death?")—a strange and curiour, motto to be writ round the beauty of a rose. For many weeks after the return of the ^riiTit. the iio^ [ay iptact and unnoticed, on the cabinet-and perchance it were well had it remained so. The Count Contarini was well satisfied with the result of his Eastern ven- ture. Already wealthy, he had added by spoliation of the unhappy victims of western prowess in arms to his store of gold and and jewels. He felt well content with him- se lJ, and decided that he had had enough of travel and war, even though it were for the holy object of subduing the infidel and suc- couring and obtaining possession of the Holy and defiled Sepulchre. He was a man who well understood and practised as much as possible the doctrines of the sage' Epicurus. He loved good meats and rare wines. Travel had somewhat subdued his pride of race, though the hardships he had undergone had increased his taste for luxuries. Superstitious, as were all men of his generation, he yet bated a priest heartily, although he never dared show his hatred, with the terrors of the £ >powerful Church ever before his mind. After his home-coming the palace by night became a perpetual abode of mirth, feasting, and revelry, and the name of Contarini in Venice became synonymous with dissipation and wine-bibbing. CHAPTER II. Count Francesco Contarini was a widower, and a childlers widower to boot. At the time when he returned from the capture of Con- stantinople he was 44 years of age. During his absence at the wars his affairs had been administered for him by a steward, one Armand Danville, a refugee Frenchman, whom he had befriended, and put in this place of trust many years before he joined the Crusade. He had in this man the most implicit confidence, and it was not betrayed. In fact, the Frenchman adored his master, ani would, I think, have readily sacrificed all, even his life, in his service. He was a tall, thin. wiry man, of a quick, nervous tempera- ment. His eyes were, perhaps, the most marked features about his face, which was sallow and sickly. They were large, black, luminous eyes, melancholy as night, seeming to suggest some hidden grief, or some shadow on the life of the owner, that he must needs keep hidden. However that may be, in general he was gay enough, and had the true Frenchman's lightness and levity of manners. What that shadow was it behoves me not here to tell, as it affects this history but little. This much I may say: Armand's devo- tion to his master was such that curious minds must needs seek reasons for it-fori men are seldom devoted to a master whose merits are only kindliness of treatment and generosity of gold-giving. Perchance it was some political crime, from the punishment of which Contarini by his influence had shielded him. Perchance he had poniarded his mis- tress, or poisoned a molher-in-law with bar- barous narcotics. These are not for me to consider. Armand, either by fear of conse- quence or natural inclination, adored and served his employer with a fidelity which is given to few of the earth's elect. We have said that the count was childless, but he had in his household one on whom he lavished such affeotion as he had to spare from himself; which was not much, for the Contarinis were ever a. selfish race. This was Loreneo Contarini, his nephew, and the only son of a younger brother, who had been killed, or, rather, assassinated, shortly before Lorenzo was born, and after his marriage. Lorenzo, at his mother's death, which occurred some eight years later, was placed under the guardianship of his uncle. At the time of the hitter's departure for Constantinople he was seventeen years old, and a strong, chivalrous youth. For five years, the time of the count's abscrc-e. he was left much to his own r<\=f mces, and anwng other things he fell in love. The lady who inspired his passion was unmed Bianea Visconti, a daughter of Count Edgardo Visconti, a brother-in-arms of Fran- cesco Contarini. Bianca., who was motherless, resided with her aunt. a lady of the most unimpeachable morals, ancestry, and man- ners; yet, in spite of her vigilanoe, for she would have been shocked beyond measure at any love affair which was not conducted under the eyes of the parents of the lovers, Lorenzo and Bianea managed many a. etolen M interview, and dreamed dreams of the future, rose-coloured and splendid, when they should be wed and all in all to one another. ■Th^ meetings took place at the house of an old nurse of Bianca's, and remained undis- covered, except on one occasion by Armand. the steward, who, however, not being directly concerned in the matter, did not ieel it his duty to interfere. It was arranged between tlie lovers that as soon as Lorenzo's uncle returned he should speak to him, and beseech his intercession and mediation on their behalf to bring these dreams to a happy conclusion. However, the count, for some weeks after his arrival, had been so occupied with his own affairs that ],orenZI) had been unable to obtain an interview with him long enough or suitable enough to bring the matter before him. One morning, as was his custom, the steward entered the private chamber of the count to report on the business of the estate and matters of the household. Count Con- tarini was in an exceedingly good humour. He seemed, too. like a man who had some. thing to communicate, but who did not know how to begin, or whether it were wise or not, to speak at all. At last he said abruptly, "Armand, I am going to be married." Armand started slightly. "My lord," he began- But the Count went on: "Yes, I am going to be married to the Lady Bianea, daughter of my friend,, the Count Visconti, and comrade-in-arms." Here be news," thought the steward, "for Lorenzc." but he kept a still unmoved countenance. It was all arranged between us before we left Constantinople, and, moreover." said the Count., "I am in love." lie laughed gaily; then a slight shade crossed his brow. ''It may be a disappointment to Lorenzo, who has learned. I fear, to consider himself my heir, but it shall not harm him. I have wealth and estate enough. I trow, and he shall lose little by this. All is arranged, and the nuptials are to be celebrated in three weeks' tinie-oii the eve of St. John s. The steward spoke his congratulations, and the Count said,, kindly. You. as before, Armand, will continue to be my comptroller of households and estates." Armand murmured his thanks. "But now I must see Lorenzo. Will yott seek him and send him hither? I would speak with him alone." Armand hastened from the room to obey, leaving the Count to his reflections, which were evidently pleasing ones, for there was a dreamy smile on his lips which made the bronzed and scarred iace oi the Crusader look younger than its wont. There was a. tap at the door, and Lorenzo entered. His face was pale and his manner much agitated as he greeted his uncle. The latter, absorbed in his own happiness, did not notice it, or, if he did, attributed the paleness of his nephew to the effect of dissipation or a long night's debauch. Lorenzo," said the Count after a few casual remarks had been exchanged, I am casual remarks had been exchanged, I am going to be married to our friend, the Count Visconti's daughter, Bianea. Lorenzo's face became perfectly livid. "What ails you?" cried the Count, for Lorenzo seemed as if he were about to faint, JJ; a strong ellort the ether recovered him- self. self. It Is nothing," he faltered at length. I am not myself to-day, my lord." Then he stammered out his wishes for his uncle's hap- piness. You must, I know, feel disappointed, my Lorenzo, but be at ease, you shall not be t wrcnged by this. I have taught you to con- sider yourself my heir. This you shall be to the extent of my power. By this parchment I have transferred to you half of my wealth I and estates, and. duly signed and witnessed. it wLi be placed in your hands on the day of my nuptials, which will be in three weeks I from now." Lorenzo fell on one knee and kissed his uncle's hand. He tried to speak, but the words would not come. One thought only possessed, I)im-Bianea. He saw only one face and form-Bianca 's. She was lost to him for ever now! But after all she had sworn, would she give him up? Yet what could she do? She could not oppose her parents' will. A thrill of jealousy passed through him, a sickening feeling of despair seized on him, and the face he raised, to his uncle's was changed and agitated beyond description. The Count took his incoherent expressions for gratitude, and after a few more words dismissed him. Lorenzo rushed 10 his room in an agony of pain and grief. 'Ihis, then, wae to be the ending of his love- dream. He knew it would be useless to, appeal to his uncle and tell him the story ol his love, and, even if by this means he delayed or broke off the marriage, he felt certain Visconti would never consent to his suit, penniless as he was. Might it not, too, cause a. quarrel between himself and his uncle, on whom he was utterly dependent? He determined to keep his own counsel and await events. "Meztuwhile," he thought triumphantly, I am to meet Bianca to- night, and, perhaps-who knowõ? she loves me, and love often finds a way. My uncle's wooing is not all sweets, after all," and be laughed bitterly. At eight o'clock in the evening of that same day the figure of a man, muffled in a. black domino, descended the steps frcm the Contarinis' palace, and, jumping into a gondola which was in waiting, rapidly dis- appeared in the darkness—not unwatched. however, for directly the gondola was oat of^sight a man hidden behind a marble statue came suddenly forth, muttering to himself under his breath, so! my Lord Lorenzo; this is how you repay your uncle's trust. Ey our Lady, my chance is coming now! Look to it; I have not forgotten ycur ipsults to the l)(Lr menial steward." It was Armand Danville! Meanwhile Lorenzo had arrived at the house of Bianca's old nurse. He dismissed the gondola, and., after waiting until the gon- dolier had taken his departure, tapped lightly at the door. It was immediately opened by an old woman, holding a lamp in her hand, whose rays fell on her face and form—a form bowed and shrivelled by age, a face so pallid and wrinkled that it was as the face of a corpse. The eyes only seemed alive—eyes dark as night, but glittering and piercing. Come in, my lord," eaii this hag. She is within." Lorenzo entered quickly. A dark form he knew well, and at the Eight of which his heart gave a. great leap, was standing in the centre cf the room. Bianea," cried Lorerzo, as he caught her in his arms, and kissed her again and again. She suffered his embraces for a while, then gently dist-sigaged herself and burst into tears. lie soothed her as best lie could. When she had rfgained her com- posure they sat clown side ly side ou a rude bench. What shall I do, what shall I tic-?" moaned Bianca. You know all, £ • you not, Lorenzo? We must: r(v:r lieet again thus. My father would kill mo," she shuddered, if ho discovered aright of era- love r.ow—now I am betrothed. Ali, why did y. u not tell your uncle when he first returned?" Dearest, I dared not," lie answered. Even when in Constantinople this betrothai was settled, and he aays he loves you—he cloves yea! He, who has only knewn you for a few weeks,, while I have been your lovej and filave for years. (To be continued on Monday
