OUR SHORTlm
OUR SHORTlm A MIDSUMMER MADNESS. Two years ago Dick Cbudleigli was begin- ning to look upon himself as an injured man. When one has plenty of money and nothing to do with it but to amuse oneself, and when the task of self-amusement becomes year by year a, more dispiriting occupation; wlitn the novelty of pleasure palls and the pursuit of it comes to be rega, rded as a toil, and a profitless one at that, it is irritating that people will persist in regarding one as an object, of unqualified envy. Cheerful, busy men, his contemporaries, whose lives were spent in the absorbing labours of professions in which their souls delighted, and who en- joyed their brief relaxations of business with a schoolboy capacity for enjoyment, irritated Dick beyond all endurance by their envious indication of him as a glaring instance of the unequal distribution of fortune. "Here's a fellow," growls one malcontent, a struggling barrister, who in his secret heart would not. exchange his individuality or his calling for those of any man living, here's a fellow who has it all his own way in life, a nice fellow, clever and all the rest of it. lots of coin, and no landed estates or relations or encum- brances of any kind to fool it away upon- why. damme, sir, if Dame Fotnne had treated me half as kindly in the handicap I'd do any- thing, alsolutely anything. A fellow has the world before him to choose what he would like to be." Has Chudleigjb ever shown any .inclination to do anything yci? mildly inquired a lis- tener who knows sonietliing of men in gene- ral and the man in question in particular. "No. can't say that he has -takes a deuced long time looking about him." "He does. I remember Ctmdleigh at Cam- bridge in—ah.' let me see—67. Must be five and thirty if he be a day. Console yourself, old fellow. Dick won't run hard for the Wool- sack or anything else that you have get your heart, upon. He never will do anything but "()ok about him for the "rest of his days." Hinc illoe lacrynase. The first faint whisper of this unpleasant, truth was beginning to make itself heard to Dick's conscicncc and to give him unpleasant twinges. So long as he could remember, tilings t.ad always shaped themselves aright for him; his wishes had never been extravagant, and they had been gratified to the uttermost almost before they were formed. In lotus-eating ease of living all his youthful aspirations had somehow slipped by and been forgotten, and no force of an influence from without had come to shape his life anew and! stir into tardy acti- vity some definite manly ambition. Dick had tastes, bnt they were not engrossing enough to absorb his existence, and he had not even a faculty for cultivating good, gentlemaulike, ruinous vices that would absorb his super- I fluous cash and give constant employment to his thoughts. All that was left to him to do he did. He knew everybody, went everywhere, did everything, and grew more tired of all people, places, and things of his acquaintance every year thatitt tfVed There arc, enjoy this existence, whom Providence, indeed, seem to have created with a special view to it—fello-vs of slender wits and strong digestions, who can go on dawdling through the world, saying and doing the same triviali- ties year after year for an inconceivable number of yea.-s without sign of material wear and tear; now and again a bit of repair has to be done. an extra false tooth put in one season, a too pronounced crowsfoot painted out another, a little depth of tone adrfed to the hair dye from time to time as the years go by, but, barring these evidences of dilapidation, the lounger about town is pretty much the same man at fifty as at thirty, and even eighty seems to make little material difference in him. But the men who really have anything in them, whether it be heart, conscience, or the rudimentary etruc- ture of an intellect, cannot stand it long; some break down and go to the bad. matri- monially or otherwise, take to plunging, a.nd cut their throats paur se distraire; idiosyn- crasies exhibit themselves in a variety of crazes; hypochondriasis is a peculiarly attractive mania, to an indolent tempera- ment. and Dick Chudleigh already began to show decided leanings in that direction. He was already known to take a morbid interest in antibilious preparations and to exhibit a curious knowledge in mineral waters of vary. ing degrees of nastiness. from the simply in- sipid to the utterly loathsome. "A man," said Dick didactically, "should be a fool or a physician before he is forty." Quite possible for him to combine some- thing of both." replied his old friend and schoolfellow. Laurence Hill, a rising young physician whom Dick had taken it into his head to consult professionally, quite pos- sible, a very small amount of the physician and :t very great deal of the fool. It strikes me, Chudleigh. that you are going to travel in that direction. Confound it, man, there's nothing the matter with you; why don't you go and do something and get rid of your crochets? Got nothing to do." said Dick, who found Hill's roughness rather bracing. Marry, travel, go in for a profession! "Too old for a profession." said Dick, dis- missing the first proposition with silent scorn, "and as to travelling, why. man, I have been ever;r'whcrc-l'arls, Naples, Rome. Yienna, places all pretty much alike, drainage uni- formly bad, smells abominable, cookery variable, tobacco indifferent. -No. take it with all its faults, London is the most toler- able place in the world to live in, and most people think so, although they are too snob- bish to own to it." "Bali!" growled Hill. "I don't mean travel- ling of that sort, by special mail service, with a courier and a high-class hotel at the jour- ney's end. Go and rough it somewhere. Try Egypt." "Egypt!" said Dick, with lifted eyebrows, "comething practical in that, Larry, but cui bono? What the deril should I do in that galere. I am too old to go a. soldiering, and as to getting knocked on the head, 'all for love and nothing for reward.* without the poor excuse of duty or the poor inducement of promotion, why I don't see it. Life has its charms yet! "I don't see what they are to you," replied Hill roughly; "by your own showing your existence is a burden to yourself, and it is certainly no use to any living creature else." "Then." said Dick, in a peculiarly suave tone, that with him was an infallible evidence of intense irritation, "you would probably prescribe suicide as the best treatment for my complaint. I'll think it over and let you know my views. Meantime, don't let me keep yon from your other patients, who are doubt- less yearning for your advice and sympathy." "It was brutal perhaps," thought Hill as he watched his friend stalk but of the room with an air of offended dignity, "at any rate it was the best thing to say. It will give you something to think about for a day or two, Master Dick, and perhaps may make you ashamed of yourself and your idle, selfish life." So fjur itiuul given- Dick somf thing to think about, bnt the sense of f-hame had not, at j present at least, been excited. "I suppose j Hill is right." mused Dick, as he walked. along in a brown study, "at any rate I hardly expected to have the truth put so plainly by him. My life has no object, no aim, no use. and where am I to find one?" "Liverpool-street, a penny all the way, » shouted an omnibus cad two paces off. "A riddle and the answer," thought Dick, with a grim sort of humour. "I'll go to Liverpool- street and test the oracle. It is not expensive, and as Hill talked of exploring, by Jove! I will explore Epping." In the fervour of a man trying a new experiment, Chudleigh even made up his mind to travel with the common herd, and was actually working his way to the third class ticket window when the eight of a small man with a large accordion modi- fied his resolution, and he compromised matters by taking a second class ticket. Hit companions were two ladies; that much Dick, who was a connoisseur in matters of breed- ing, decided at once in their favour at sight of the younger one. There was an air of delicate, high-bred refinement about her pretty, piquant little face that carried con- viction at a glance. The elder lady's claim to the title was, perhaps, not so unquestionable, yet she was good-look- V, ing. dignified, quietly dressed, andi spoke in refined tones with a full t. complement of li s" when she thanked f Dick for some trifling assistance in conneo- f tion with a refractory window. The conver- sation on the way down to Chingford was limited to thi3 brief expression of thanks and it4 acknowledgment, and Chudleigh, moping in his corner, reflecting over Hill's last sen-* tbr.ce and speculating as to what the deuce b, should do when he did get to the forest, found temporary distraction in furtively watching the girl's face. It was really a very pretty face, even in repose, clear cut features, delicate complexion. golden brown hair, tum- bling in little ring-like curls over a white forehead, nose with the slightest possible soupcon of "tip-tiltednem," long dark lashes almost sweeping the cheeks, and obstinately veiling the eyes, which, in the midst of his pre-occupation, Dick grew momentarily more curious to look into, but the young lady kept them obstinately bent down or averted, and it was not until the train slackened speed into Cbingford Station that for one moment she favoured him with a swift, direct glance. When it was over lie could not for the life of him have told whether the lustrous eyes that had looked into his were black, blue, or green; all that he did feel was that eyes such as these (and he had had some experience in studying woman's looks) bad never before stirred such queer unexplored depths of feel- ing in his flirtation-hardened heart, eyes with such latent fire in them, such possibi- lities of passion and tenderness, and withal with such a sparkle of humorous apprecia- tion. Dick grew momentarily sentimental. a sensation that he had outgrown for the past. twelve years—since Lettie Fosbrooke; but that was an old story, a.nd though it suited Chud- leigh to regard himself as a blighted N being, he had not, in truth, taken his blight much to heart, and he had found consolation in the fact that Lettie. who had married a richer man before he, Dick, had come into his uncle's property, was beginning to look [ matronly, and matronly in a blowsy, full- blown, unbecoming style that offended his f iniait shudder sometimes at the thought of what *■ 1 might have been. But the ladies were wait- ing to get out of the carriage, and Dick having l assisted them to alight was rewarded with one more eight of the bewildering eyes. Wliat 5 to do to follow up this adventure, for here it I could not be allowed to rest? Fortune favours l" the indolent sometimes, and was especially x kind to Mr. Chudleigh in this instance, for. t having strode out of the station, and engaged the only fly that happend to be in the yard. as he stood with his foot on the step diaenss- ing with the driver as to where he should be taken, he heard the voiccs of his late fellow- ,f t travellers behind him. o; » "It is no use. Stella. I could not possibly a walk to High Beech, and on such a day as EO this," grumbled the elder lady. "If there is no oltjer fly we must wait until one comes in, or else go back to town. I would not attempt it." ) 1 "Oh! mother." said the owner of the eyes L- plaintively, "after coming all this way, and. fsuch lovely weather too. v "If you will allow me." said Dick, turning promptly, "to offer you seats in my fly. I ehall '1 3 be only too much honoured. I am going to e. High Beech (he had instantly decided npoa t his destination), and I am unfit for much 1, walking myself, or I would suggest giving it up to you altogether, but perhaps you will not l- object to my occupying a front seat." "Oh! I could not have thought of depriving i you of your conveyance," said the elder lady graciously, "but since you are so kind as to offer us a share in it I shall be very thank- ful to accept, provided you will allow me tA i » pay my proportion of the fare." J 8 "Mother!" remonstrated the girl in a whit- I- per. 1 "Decidedly not quite a lady. the old one. 8 thought Dick, "if she had been aceuetomcdk to the ways of polite society she would eitheff II have snubbed me for my offer, or accepted it without thinking of paying." However, he p was too interested in the result to venture upon any remonstrance at this stage, so with a muttered remark that might mean any- thing. be handed the ladies into the carriage and followed himself, feeling that one step 1 was gained. The ice once broken, Dick found that. so far as he and the mother were con- t 1 cerned. conversation went on smoothly enough. Mrs. Barton, as be found out liep- name to be, was exhaustive in her explana- tions as to the growth of physical weaknes* ) incidental to the approach of age, that pre- vented her indulging in much walking excr- cise now, although when she was a girl, Ac. Ac., and when the subject was well-nigh, er- hausted she turned it in Dick's direction by remarking that he too did not look strong. "I am not very," said that arch humbug. with a dishonest idea of exciting sympattbyl in the breast of the young person appro- priately named Stella, "my heart is some. what affected." Jl "Dear me, now, how sad! You should tako m great care of yourself. It is to be hoped that you have good care and advice." "Xo. indeed," said Dick, still fishing for commiseration, "I am quite by myself in the world. Allow me, by-the-bye, to introduce myself, since I know your name already. I am Richard Chudteigh." "Mr. Richard Chudleigh, dear me, I wondep whether you are any relation to Sir Philip ? Chudleigh, of Norcotc." "Yes. we are cousins,"1 replied Dick, who hated Philip Chudleigh, who he thought at cad, and bad never felt any inclination to own r^ttionship with him before. "Well, that is strange; how things do tmnt out to be sure. Why, Stella, my dear, you will remember, for you have often heard ma say so. I am sure, that your poor father'# mother's cousin married a younger sister of Lady Chudleigh, the wife of the sixthl baronet." "This is very interesting." saad Dick. seising the occasion eagerly; "why your daughter,, Miss Barton, and, I must be—wh&t—mr&t cousin*, once removed at least." "Hardly," *xid the girl. laughing. (To,
