OUR SHORT STORY.
OUR SHORT STORY. A MIDNIGHT MYSTERY "Twas, see you, Fir, my first essay, ajul it might well happen that I should, for lack of experience, allow too little for the effects of disease or poison, so that if the seeds of either yet remained in him. it might clianco that I should toil overmuch to bring back to life again a. man who, being alive, should at once die again from the same cause as he did .before. Practice maketh per- fect, and in time, doubtless, I shonld learn to put so much of life into a man that it should crush into .nothing the seeds of death "that I were yet in him; but in the beginning it was I needful for me to find one of healthy con- stitution who should die neither of poison nor I disease, nor of any violent dismemberment or I disruption, that so the bringing of him or her to life should be made easy. Then did I cast my eyes upon my sister's child, Alicia, here, j I a comely maiden, healthy, well formed, and well favoured, and' it seemed to me that in her had I found the very subject that I sought. Therefore, jjpnetrating to the maidens chamber while she slept, I availed myself of n hint in a play-book that I had read, and did smother her with a pillow, that so she might die without injury to blemish, but my knowledge stops short on the threshold cf ful- filment, for, albeit I have stopped the body's decay, albeit I have called back the spirit to the lifeless clay. I have failed yet to put the perfect life of human kind again in the maiden's body. Now tho time hath again come, since you are here, when I must take another essay.' "Of course, you naturally believe all this story to be a dream and a delusion, and what followed, if I attempted to relato it at length, would seem like recounting the wild extra- vagances of a nightmare. Strange, uncouth, old instruments were brought forth, inex- plicable ceremonials were goue through, and a scene of indescribable horror ensued. Cries and groans burst from the blue lips of the half-animated corpse with fearful rapidity. The face was distorted, and the body writhed and twisted into contortions expressive of agonies unspeakable—sometimes half spring- ing from the board into an erect position, and then falling heavily back. We say in our profession (although in truth we know little about it) that the pang of being born is greater than the pain of dying. I have seen many a. death bed, and rarely a hard one. In the worst the struggle was not for long. What^tho infant may endure when first it 'breathes no one can tell. Its sensibility can- not be large, and its capacity for suffering, at the most, is limited. Here. however. I eaw, or seemed to see, something very different— a matured and perfect physical organisation passing, not from life to death, with a gradual failing of the life machinery, but being called back to existence, and striving with agony unutterable to force again into normal action the organs whose functions had once ceased in death. It was, dream or reality, a ghastly exhibition such as no medical school expe- rience can parallel, and even now I hardly care to dwell long upon it. I seemed to grow faint and sick with horror a^I watched the scene, and I felt my senses reeling and giving way. -Up to this point all that had occurred in my vision was clear, distinct, and, so far as that could be, consistent. From this point it grew more vague and confused. It seemed at last that that terrible old man. failing in his efforts to retore the girl's body to life, turned upon me and exacted from me the sacrifice of my life for hers. I remember resisting feebly, but hope- lessly; then it seemed as if I were bound down and bled slowly to death, and, as I felt my vital powers ebbing, I watched with a horrible fascination the hue of life coming back into the girl's face, noted the steady. even respirations, the blue lips turning to cherry red, until at last the eyes opened, and she uttered articulate words. Then my senses failed me, and, beyond an impression that we had changed places, that it was I who lay prostrate on that table, and she who stood and curiously regarded me for awhile, I I remember no more. And then it seemed that I went through in my own person the agonies of returning- life. I struggled fiercely against unseen bonds, and, springing up at last with a tremendous effort of vital force, I dashed blindly through all obstacles and fought my way into the open air. I do not pretend to say how I passed through the closed doors. I was conscious of nothing until I stood in the open street again. The grey light of dawn was stealing over the western housetops. I was hatless, but not otherwise remarkable, as I thought, in appearance. I felt ill and dazed, and horribly cold. and, as I stood and rested for a few moments against some area railings at the corner of (lower- street, a night policeman came along and gave me a scrutinising look. What's up. young man,' remarked he laconically. For a. moment I oould not speak. Then I murmured something about the horrible sccnes going on in the house down the street. Been in a house in this street, eh? Looks like a case of hocussing. What house did you say, governor?' That with the stone archway and the large gate,' I answered. Well, young man, p'r'aps you'll be good enough to show me which you mean. for I'm blessed if I know any such house in the street.' There, that over the way. just a little way down,' said I testily, turning to look for it. but all I could see was the dead wall of a garden extending for a short distance, then a small piece of waste ground, enclosed with an. old wooden hoarding, then a line of shops extending to the other end of the street! I felt and looked utterly bewildered, and, as I glanced up deprecatingly at the policeman, I found him regarding me with grave dis- approval. I tell you what it is, young man; you're either a^trying to come a lark over me, or I know what it means. When a young man as has been out all night, without his hat, sees houses as was never built, and can't find 'em when he looks for 'em, I calls it d.ts., that's what I calls it. Now, look here, you appears to be a decent young man. Just you take a cup of hot strong coffee at that there stall, and then you out along home. and don't you do it again, or you'll get 'em worse next time.' I was conscious that appearances were very much against me, so I made no protest, but took the cup of coffee meekly (and it did put some life and warmth into me). I stood another for my friend the policeman, pulled myself together a bit, and walked home- wards." Here the doctor made so long a pause that I thought he had finished, and remarked, A very curious experience, but oac easily to be accounted for. I should think." So it would be," said the doctor quietly, if that were all the story. Unfortunately, it is Dot, and the rest of it is jn one sense the worse part. I must hurry over it. for it is the most painful to me. I walked back to my apartments, as I said. What do you think I found when I reaohed them? An empty house. The dining-room ahutten were closed I and dirty, fly-blown bills, announcing "This I House to Let." hung half tattered in the win- dow panes. The steps were grimed with dirt. and littered with scraps of musty paper and stalks of rotten straw. I put my latch-key into the door, opened it, and went, upstairs to the rooms I occupied. The house was through- out entirely empty, stripped of all its furni- ture. and my portmanteau had gone with it. I had no idea that my landlady contemplated a moonlight flit,' and the only thought that, occurred to me at first was that she had managed it with remarkable skill. Then I was struck with the unaccountable air that the house wore of having been a. Ion? time vacant.. This was a puzzling feature in the affair that would not be accounted for. andi while I was thinking over it 'a church clock struck seven. The thought of my train then came into my head. I was anxious to get. home, and my portmanteau contained so little of value, my heavy luggage having been. sent on. that it was not worth while my wasting another day in town to look after that. I left the house, hailed a. cab, con- trived to buy a travelling cai% at an early shop, and reached Euston Station in time to get a cup of tea, take my ticket, buy a news- paper. and take my place in the train with- out undue hurry. I had much to think over. and for some time did not care to look at my paper. When I did glance over it at last. I found that all its news was unaccountably strange to me. I had not got the thread, of anything that was referred to either in poli- tics or in theatrical or general information^ It seemed that there must be something wrong with it. The date was correct. Yesterday was the third of October, the newspapers bore tho date of the 4th. and here I was momentarily staggered to notice that the year had altered! Yesterday I was in 1859; to-day tho "Times bore the date of i860. Such an error seemed;: unaccountable. I could understand a blunder, perhaps, if the mistake had merely involved the slipping of one figure into the place of another. That two figures should be changed was marvellous. Some horrible suspicion of the truth, I think, flashed across me. but I would not entertain it. Still, after thinking for some time, I felt that my doubts must be resolved, and I asked my only fellow-traveller politely enough what the year was. Such an inquiry is startling enough from a. stranger at any time, and, as be had clearly been viewing me for some time with suspicion, my manner very likely appearing rather wild, I have no doubt but at that point lie put me down for a hopeless lunatic, and felt extremely un- comfortable for the rest of the time that wo travelled together. I was alive to the neces- sity of not getting involved in any unpleasant, ness that would delay my arrival at home- that I was entirely enxious to get over as speedily as possible-so, although his cor. roboration of the date 1860 disturbed and per- plexed me more than I can well say, I re- strained myself and pretended to doze quietly for the rest of the journey. As to whatJ awaited mo at the end of it I cannot ever now refer to it without a return of my old sorrow and distress. Krietly, 1 found my mother's house closed and empty, and on. visiting the solicitor, my father's successor in. practice, who looked after her affairs, I found, that she had been for three months dead. The shock and wearing anxiety of my 'mys- terious disappearance' had broken her heart and worn her down to tho grave before her time. It appeared that just twelve months before my coods had been delivered, and at the same time a note received from me, stating that I myself should arrive on the ftllcwing day. Two days later my port- mantean, which was addressed, had been also sent on from my lodgings, with a note from I the landlady, enclosing my last week's bill, and complaining of my sudden and mysterious departure from her house in the night. This gave my poor mother a terrible shock, and. at her request, the lawyer, himself an old friend, went up to London and made inquiries about me. He had been unable to learn any- thing beyond the fact that I had been heard to leave the house just before midnight on the 3rd of October, and if the earth had opened and swallowed me tip on the spot and after-trace of me or of my movements could not have been more entirely lost. My mother believed firmly that I had been enticed into some low den.) she always thought, on some good errand, and there murdered, and my body made away with. What her adviser thought I am unable to say. but he naturally expected some explanation from me of the mystery. The truth, or VIiliat seemed to me to be the truth. I dared not tell him,_so I invented a seemingly plausible explanation, in which at last I almost came to believe myself. I told how that I had met with an accident in the street, had received serious injuries, and been removed to a hospital; how that I had long remained there between life and death, and that when at length I recovered, owing to injuries to the head. my brain was temporarily affected, and my memory had left me, and as I had been robbed of any papers that would give a clue to my identity, my friends could not be com- municated with, and that, therefore. I waa removed to the workhouse, where I had re- mained until, on the complete restoration of my faculties, I procured my discharge and at once returned home. ignorant of the amount of time that had elapsed. I could see that there were many questions he would fain have put to tie. and that there were many points in my story which seemed to him very weak, but my distress and illness were so obvious that he did not press me then, although his manner was very cold, and I learned after- ward. that he, as well as many of my old friends, utterly disbelieved my tale, and put the worst possible construction upon my con- duct I had too much real subject tor sorrow and dismay to care over much for the weight of an unjust opinion. There was a trifling amount of property that was to come to me on my mother's death, and that was still in the trustee's hands, there having been no proof given of my own demise. All I waited for was the realisation of this, after which I resolved to leave for ever my native place, which was now unbearable to me. "Lucy! you would say. Oh! she had been married for six months. It is only the mother- love that is the faithful love in woman. I suppose she had grown tired of waiting, and was reconciled to her loss. Mine came to me too suddenly for me to endure it with a like equanimity. After that for many years I led a pandering life. 1 saw practice in many Continental cities, went through three cam- paigns as an army surgeon in different pafts of the world, and at last, weary of going up and down in the world, settled down in this phvee, where I hope to end my days." "Did you never." I asked, "seek any furthw. knowlecigo of tl at mysterious house?" "Ofteu." he replied, "but unavailingly Neither memory nor old tradition could, M: far as I could Bad. confirm the fact that such a house had in the memory of man stood on the spot where I found it." "It is a strange, mysterious talc," I said. "and I could offer no suggestion about it save such as was contained in your 0- invented explanation, which, although it did not satisfy the lawyer, was, after all, I am convinced the true one." "It may be," he said, "perhaps it must be so. and yet-" I "Yet what?" "Docs it not seem strange that the clothes I wore that night, the very linen that I had on me. should havo remained new all tboee months, with no more soil or sign of age upon them than that which a few hours more wear could give." I was silent, not knowing what more to urge. "It is a mystery," said he al last; "a ray*- tery that the brain wearies in trying to solve. That way madness lies. Let it remain a, mya.. tery. and let 1U speak of it no morer" CQB6 iitNDJ
