A STABLE MYSTERY.
A STABLE MYSTERY. By NAT GOULD. Author of The Double Event*" "Settling Day," In Royal Colours," Ac., 4ft, SYNOF^IS.—Mr. Catteran Creel^v'i? Bine Blood was struck ont of the liEt of runners for the Cesarewitch almost on the eve of the race. As Blue Blood was first favourite, this action occasioned much comment unfriendly to Cresley. a man of stainless honour. The horse, had. in fact, been poisoned. Here was a complete mystery, Ben Fitchett, the was a complete mystery, Ben Fitchett, the trainer, and the stable lad Burton, who did I the horses on the eventful night, being unable lo cast any light on the subject. A detective {Leslie Dethick) was at once called in to investigate the matter. Meanwhile, another horse of Mr. Cresley's Pancake), which ie expected to have no chance, is still ajnonget the starters. But Long Tom, belonging to Dr. Stanley Shortose, a neigh-J hour of Cresley's, advances to the position I of favonrite. The race-day arrives, and an exciting contest takes place, in which Pan- cake plays a surprising part, winning by a head. Dr. Shortoee tries in vain to induce his jockey to lodge an objection. The doctor is very hard pressed for money to meet his creditors. Some of his bookmaker friends promise to help him. He also asks Cresley's sister a Mrs. Kent) to marry him. in the hope that her fortune migrht tide him over his difficulties. Mrs. Kent refuses him. Cresley. however, agrees to lend him two thousand pounds. Meanwhile, the doctor went, up to London, where be was shadowed by Leslie Dethick, the detective engaged inquiring into the poisoning of Blue Blood. Dethick reluctantly came to the conclusion he must have been on the wrong scent, and that the suspicions he entertained against him were wrong. He was more determined than ever to he on the right track, and went down to Cresley again to make more search- ing inquiries. CHAPTER XI.-Continued, He caught his man in the Kursaal, and on taking him back to Margate the offender attempted to jump overboard. Dethick was too smart for him. and said, as he flung him on to the deck with a crash: "My dear fellow, a. watery grave is not your portion at present, although you may ultimately come to that. I am anxious you should prepare for that event by four or five years' earnest work in one of the schools for bad characters established by a paternal Government. To Ostend Dethick went again, and, although it was not the season, he found plenty of strangers there who daily wended their way towards the tables.. He strolled about the quaint streets, and listened to the curious jargon of the people. He looked into shop windows, and wondered ft the fearful eatables he saw therein. He entered a tram and went to the terminus, a.nd then returned to the town. He repeated the ride. and the conductor regarded, him with euspicicon. and had serious thoughts of banding him over to the authorities as an Anarchist. Xobody but a mad Anarchist, he thought, would ride up and down in a tram for the mere pleasure of the thing. Fami- liarity with cars had bred in him contempt for them. lowards ten at night. Dethick strolled into a well-lighted room, where men and women were collected chatting. smoking, and sitting round gaming-tables. He knew the class of people; they were all of the same type. A man in authority recognised him and greeted him with respect. The name of DetMck meant much to this man. _Can I have a few words with you?" said .h£" detective. Certainly, with pleasure. Come in here," md be opened the door of a private room. "Have you ever met a gentleman named Dr. alortose?" Leslie asked, abruptly, and by hie manner indicating he knew his companion yuld answer in the affirmative. The man seemed uneasy, but the detective's 'yes were on him. and he said: "Yes. I know him." "Does he often come or»r to Osrtend?" asked )ethick. es. many times in the course of a year," "Gambles heavily. does he not?" "Not here, I assure ycm. "Oh, no; of cororee he would not gamble teavily here; you never allow it. I asked you 1 f be gambled heavily. Yon know the men rho do." 1 The man shrugged his shoulders and held 1 Int his hands in a deprecating manner. ( "Why are you so anxious to learn what Dr. 1 ihortose does here?" he asked. "Because he is a friend of mine. and I mean o look after his welfare." answered Dethick. The man chuckled to himself and said: "Good. very good. I know what it must be 1 ike to be a friend of yours." ( "Come. tell me about the doctor, there's a ood fellow. I may be able to do you a turn 1 ome day." said Dethick. After a moment's hesitation the man said: 1 "Dr. Shortose is a heavy gambler, and he is 'nd of gay life. There is one woman here to- ] ight. could tell you more about him than. I ( an." "Will you point her out to me after I have 15 card what you have to say?" n "Yes. Dr. Shortose lost heavily here last "ason." Then, lowering his voice, he said: 6 "A curious thing happened at this woman's ouse. A man. who had won heavily, went I ome with her and Dr. Shortose. In the mom. 19 he was found insensible on the sea front, c e had been robbed and drugged. When he covered he exculpated Dr. Shortose and the h oman from all blame, saying he was per- II setly sober and in his right senses when he h 'ft the house. "How he came to be where he was found he a id not recollect. A sudden faintness had ;i»ed him, and he sat down. h "Nothing more could be got out of him. It h my firm belief he was drugged at the oman's house." Ie: "I think you are right," said Leslie. "Show n ie the woman." I p The man opened the door and they looked ito the room. I "There she is. seated at the end table, the oman in black, with a fur round her neck." r, Leslie Dethick stood behind her chair and a- to did not observe him. She was losing, and thie irritated her. 11 Suddenly she rose from the table, turned tl mnd. and saw Dethick. He looked straight, into her face, almost n, idely. and she resented it. j,, "Have you seen me before?" she asked lgrily. Ik- "Y P/i, with my friend Dr. Shortose," was his h lexpected reply. c; He saw her turn pale and gasp, and a u isrhtencd look came into her eyes. a, "Who are you?" she asked. "Your friend if I may be," he said. "I wi8jl £ speak with you." "I am- going home; you can come," she 81 id. followed her out of ,he room and walked U ,°rne<i drn a ,ide «««■ >d entered a la,Se 1,„M| an nir u leseseiun, and invited the detective into a h out room. which he saw at a sUnce1* pensively furnished. keep, tbi, ttp, I wonder:- he .aid to He saw the woman was, or rather had been mdsome, but her features had grown arse, and she lacked refinement. ••Howtdt6yD1Vgll0"ith me?" 8be *«!. ,I-c;" do{>s Dr. Short, spend his time I aiu not his keeper." "I allude to the gentleman who was dragged by Dr. Shortose and robbed in this boose." "It was not in this house." She saw Sh8 had committed herself. and added hastily. "I know to what you allude, but we had no hand in it." "We:" "Dr. Shortose and myself." "I do not wish to interfere with you," he said. "I am Detective Leslie Dethick. She started in alarm. "I see the doctor has mentioned my name to you. Come, tell me how he spends his time here." "You are his enemy," she said. "Granted. I have no wish to be yours." "He gambles; he has a passion for it. He has lost large sums here," she said hesitar tingly. "Is this his house?" asked Dethick, ruth- lessly. "Yes, he pays the rent." "I strongly axlvise you to have nothing 14 do with him; lie is a dangerous man." She laughed mockingly as she said.— "-Not dangerous; he is quite harmless, l assure you." He gathered from this that Dr. Shortoso was under her spell, and he did not admire his tagte. He bade her good-night and left her wondering why she bad answered his questions. "He's a man at any rate," she said as sho saw him go down the street. "What a. will he has. He ccnld have forced me to answer any- thing." Dethick was satisfied. He had gnessed Dr. Shortose led a, double life, and now he knew it. He went back to the gambling-house, and asked the woman s name from the man who had pointed her out. "She passes as Madame Trebelli," he replied. "What kind of a woman is she?" Extravagant, given to high play. A woman who would ruin any man." "And Shortose?" "Hes a fool. and infatuated with her. She can get anything from him. He pays her debts. And the man turned up his.eyes and shook his head to show the hopelessness of the doctor's ca" Next day he returned to London. On the steamer he chatted with the chief steward. There were very few passengers. They were old acquaintances; Dethick knew so many people in widely diverging walks of life. "Ever met a man named Shortose?" askctt Leslie. "Shortosc, Dr. Shortose—owner of Long Tom. Yes. I know him. He made me back his horse in the Cosarewitch." "And it didn't, come off." laughed Dethick. "l had half a sov. on the winner." "Some men are born lucky," growled tha, chief. "Do you know Shortose?" "Yee. I have met him several times." "Rum fellow. Regular gambler." said tbo- chief. "Fond of the girls, and all that. He <, aften over at Ostend." "Free with his money?" queried Dethick. "Was at one time. Can't say he is now. He- borrowed a fiver from me last trip he was aver, and I haven't seen him since. Said he was short of ready and had been cleared out at the tables. There's lots of 'em like t.hat." -rowled the chief. "You ought to set up a loan office," said Dethick. "And borrow the money myself," laughed Lhe chief. Dethick went on deck and inhaled the Ele- oreeze. "My friend the doctor seems to have gonØí he pace. Xo wonder he is hard up. And fthen a man is short of coin he often becomes lesperate. I think I can sum you up, doctor, liter my little trip to 'Giddy Ostend.' CHAPTER Xn. GRATE ACCUSATIONS. Leslie Dethick was at home when a wire -cached him requesting his presence at Presley as quickly as possible. "They have found out something. I'mofr." ie said cheerfully. On arriving & Cresley Park Mrs. Kent aa* lim, "I am in great trouble," she said, "Dr. Roberts advised me to send for you. Mr. Lesley, my brother, has been poisoned." "Poisoned!" echoed Leslie Dethick. in uttep Lstonishment at the unexpected announce- aent. "Yes. Arsenical poisoning. Pr. tates." "That s the same poison that did for Bluet Slood," said Dethick. "Dr. Roberts thought there might be eoma) onnection between the two cases," she said. "And he is probably right," replied Dethick. lis eyes gleaming as he fancied he saw the let closing round the man who had baffledi urn and given him so much trouble. Please do not allow Mr. Cresley to know 12 ni here." he added. "I am sure it will be better for me to telij mi." she replied. "It will only annoy him ifi e discovers it himself." "This is a very delicate matter, and requires, areful handling," sa.id the detective. ''1011. met carry out Dr. Roberts's instructions and ropare all his food yourself." "That I shall certainly do," she answered, "Is Mr. Cresley not in bed?" he asked. "Dr. Roberts has ordered him to keep hi., ::10m for a few days, but it goes Tery raucb, gainst his with for him to do eo." "It is all for the best. He is safer therev i that time I may have discovered some-! ling." Leslie Dethick called upon Dr. Shortose the. igbt of his arrival. The doctor professed to, e glad to see him and greeted him cordially. Had Dethick been aware that Dr. Shortose. new he had been shadowing him he would ave been surprised. Such. however, was the, ise, and the doctor had been enlightened. nw ittingly, by one of his numerous gambling cquaintances who knew the detective by- ght. and out of curiosity had watched him allowing Dr. Shortose from a London a tion. When Dr. Shortoee saw Dethick coming tip. ie drive to his house, a wicked look came' ito his eyes, and opening the sideboard ha iok out a. whisky decanter, and removing 1e stopper dropped something in that h. ad taken out of his waistcoat pocket. "So you are still on the track of t.he Bhu," lood nobbier?" said the doctor. (To be Continued tomorrow.)
