A STABLE MYSTERY.
A STABLE MYSTERY. By NAT GOULD. Author of The Double Event." Settling Day." In E-oyal Colours," Ac., 4a. CHAPTER IX.-Continued. "Oh, no; your note of hand will do. Bills between friends is out of the question. I hope we have known each other too long for that," I replied Catteran. "When do you want the money? Will next Tuesday do, after settling day?" "Yes. that will help me. I can manage to settle, and that is about all. I am very short of ready money." "Then you may rely upon having a cheque on Tuesday morning for the amount," said Catteran. The doctor was profuse in his thanks, and as he walked home wished he had asked for a trifle more. "I wonder how the deuce he gets rid of his money," thought Catteran. "Speculates in shares no doubt. Awful rot that, no fun in it. Give me a rank outsider at a. hundred to one. That's the sort for my money." Dr. Shortose went up to London on the Saturday, and when Tom Burton found he had gone he made inquiries at the station, and then sent a telegram to Leslie Dethick. The detective shadowed the doctor during bis stay in town, but was completely at fault in his surmises, and reluctantly came to the conclusion he must have been on the wrong scent, and that the suspicions he entertained against him were wrong. He was more determined than ever to be on the right track, and went down to Cresley again to make more searching inquiries. CHAPTER X. A MYSTERIOUS ILLNESS. The two thousand pounds lent by Catteran Cresley to Dr. Shortose tided the latter over I his difficulties for the time being, but his affairs were in such an insolvent state that little short of a miracle, or an unexpected run of luck. would prevent the crash coming. He owed money on all sides, moneylenders had a firm grip over him. and William Angas had not yet been paid. Then the two thousand owing to Catteran Cresley was due in about a fortnight. Dr. Shortose, during the'winter, tried his luck at Monte Carlo, but without any result in his favour. Day after day be had tempted fortune at the tables. Sometimes he won. On one occasion he netted Beveral thousands of francs, but the following day lost it all, and more wilh. it. So him. first with hope, and then dashed him down with despair. Catteran Cresley did not know the doctor's whereabouts, but Leslie Dethick did. and he knew that Dr. Shortose was a confirmed gambler, and deeply in debt. During the winter Dethick had not been idle. He was puzzled, and the Blue Blood case seemed as far off being solved as ever. Dethick was not easily daunted; difficulties increased his energies, and he meant to suc- ceed in the only case which had so far baffled JliaL- Not a scrap at evidence could be get against Dr. Shortose, although he had a shrewd sus- picion that the doctor could throw some light on-the subject. Tom Burton was a. bit of an enigma to him. He seemed to have something on his mind, and hesitated how to act. Blue Blood had recovered from the effects of the poison, and was in active work again with a view to picking up a good handicap during the spring. Pancake led him in his work, and it was evident that bad .Blae Blood not been "got at" would have been the greatest certainty on record. Catteran Crealey had been in indifferent health during the spring, and his medical attendant was puzzled over his patient's ailment. Dr. Roberts was a. clever physician. and resided at Stanhope, some considerable dis- tance from Cresley. Mrs. Kent was anxious about her brother, as he complained of irritation and great internal pain. was very restless, and had a a poor appetite. She questioned Dr. Roberts, but received no satisfactory reply. "There is no danger. Mrs. Kent," he said, "and I am giving him medicine that will do him good. I confess, however, I am not quite certain where the evil lies or what has caused it, but I shall find out before long." Leslie Dethick came down to Cresley, and was surprised at the change in Mr. Cresley. "I have not been well for some time," said Catteran. "Dr. Roberts is attending me, and has done me good. I am much better to-day than I was a week ago. I suppose you have no further news to communicate?" "Not at present, but I think I shall have in a week or two. I came down to see Tom Burton again. I tun firmly convinced he knows something about it." "I have been doubtful about him ail-along," said Catteran. "I do not think he did it. but I fancy he is shielding someone whom he suspects," said Dethick. The detective, however, could extract noth- ing from Tom Burton. who professed entire ignorance of anything and everything con- nected. with the affair. Three or four days after Dethiek's return to town Dr. Shortose called upon his friend Mr. Cresley. "I am pleased to see yon so much better," he said. "Thanks, doctor, I am pretty lit team. and hope soon to be quite myself." Two days later, however, Oatteran Cresley was so ill that Mrs. Kent at once sent a special messenger for Dr. Roberts. The physician looked grave when he saw him, and said to Mrs. Kent: "Has he been taking anything likely to dis- agree with him?" "No," she said. "his appetite has been better than usual. He has had a little champagne* and an occasional whisky and soda to drink." When Dr. Roberta was alone with Mrs. Kent be said: "I do not wish to alarm you. but this sort of thing must be put a stop to. Mr. Cresley is suffering from an irritant poison adminis- tered in small quantities. If he does not cease taking.it to- will be in danger of losing hit life. Have you ever seen him take any di,ug?" y "No," said Mrs. Kent, alarmed beyond measure. "He has a. perfect horror of drugs ajid medicine of all kinds, unless ordered by you." "He has taken something. I am certain," said Dr. Roberts. "If he has not adminis- ,I tered it himself, it has been given to him in small quantities." Mrs. Kent was incredulous. She could not believe jt, and said so plainly. "I know it is difficult for you to understand, but it is the case, I assure you, said Dr. Roberts, kindly. "In no other way can 11 account for the symptoms. Would you like! to call in other advice? Two heads and opinions are sometimes better than one." We have every confidence in you. Dr. Roberte." she said. "Ton are perfectly certain he uses nodrugf He may have concealed from you that he has w suffered for some time past, and taken some- thing to ease the pain." "I am sure he has not. He leaves every- thing about his room. Had he done as you suggest I should soon have found it out." said Mrs. Kent. "Question him quietly about it. but do not alarm him or hint at what I have said; it would merely irritate him and make him wirse. I will call again to-morrow." Mrs. Kent was much troubled at Dr. Roberts's statement. Had Catteran concealed anything from her? She knew her father died from cancer in the stomach, after intole- rable suffering, bravely borne. Did Catteran inherit the awful disease? She believed it to be hereditary, and the mere thought of such a thing caused her to shudder. "Poor Catteran. How awful, if true. Dr. Roberts must have meant this. He knew the nature of our father's disease. Perhaps he is right, and Catteran has been taking some deadly drug to ease the pain. In that case his remedy may be worse than the disease." She questioned her brother without arousing his suspicions as to what Dr. Roberts had aur- mised. He laughed at her, and said:, "My dear Alida, don't be foolish. Surely you know me better than that. No man could have enjoyed better health until within the' last two or three months. Had I suffered from our father's complaint it would have manifested itself before. Even had such been the case. I would not have doctored myself. You ought to know me better than that." Dr. Shortose called to inquire after his friend, and Catteran, who was having a glass of champagne, asked him to join him. "Fitchett has rung up on the telephone, sir. He wishes to ask you a question," said a servant. "Excuse me a moment, doctor," said Cat- teran. "Something about entries, I expect." When he returned he said: "As I thought; Fitchett is always very par- ticular about throwing entrance money away." "A good fault," said Dr. Shortose. "Many horses are entered in a reckless manner, and without much thought or foresight." Catteran sipped his wine, and putting down the glass said: "How do you like this champagne? Yoa are a good judge of wine." "It is excellent, dry, and palatable, and with body in it. and a good vintage, too." "I got it from Adels. Sometimes I fancy it has a peculiar flavour, but my palate is pro- bably out of order." "That is generally the cue when one it unwell." That night Oatteran Oresley was much I worse, and by morning he was suffering intense internal pains. Dr. Roberts called early, and when ht 8W him at once administered an antidote used in poisoning cases, and then. signing to Mrs. XeÍÏt. took her out of the room. He cpeto seriously, and said: "This is very grave. He has evidently had another dose of poison, arsenic probably. Who can have given it him?" "Given it him!" exclaimed Mrs. Kent. horrified at the mere thought. "Yes; he would not take it himself. not such a poison as that." "This is terrible," she said. "What is to 1M. done?" "Has anyone seen him since I was here last?" "Only Dr. Shortose. They had a glass of champagne together soon after you left yea* terday." "No one else?" "No." "It is very strange," mused Dr. Roberts. "Perhaps I may be mistaken. but I think not." He returned to his patient. and again admi- nistered an antidote and a powerful emetic. He remained for some time. and satisfied himself fciis conclusions were correct. He kept the knowledge to himself, not desiring to increase his patient's anxiety. Another consultation with Mrs. Kent followed. "You can trust everyone about your house?" he asked. "Yes. Oh. yes. They are all old. well-tried servants, devoted to my brother," she said. in an agitated voice. "Some action must be taken.. Another attack like the last and I wil not answer for the consequences. Do not think me unreason- able if I ask you to see to all his food your- self and give him anything he wishes to drink with your own hands," he said. "I cannot understand it," she feaid, bewildered at the calamity that had fallen upon them. Dr. Roberts sympathised with her. and said:, "I believe your brother engaged a detective in the Blue Blood case. That was arsenical poisoning. It is just possible there may be some connection between the cases. I think you should send for him; his advice will be worth having. No feeling of delicacy must hinder yon; remember Mr. Cresley's life may be at stake. It is probable the detective may have got a clue to the Blue Blood case, and the culprit may have found some meana to have this poison given to Mr. Cresley, in order to get him out of the way, so that there would be no prosecution." "I will act on your advice," she said, "Dethick s presence will be a relief to me." CHAPTER XI. "GIDDY OSTEND." Although Leslie Dethick fancied his one. picions against the doctor were wrong, he was loath to give up his ideas on the ques- tions. He had & rooted dislike for the doctor. He suddenly recalled the conversation he overheard at the bar at the Rutland Arms, Newmarket. When it had been suggested that Dr. Shortose had heaps of money, one of the bookmakers had replied, "has he? Well, if you saw him plank it down at Ostend, as I have, you might alter your opinion," or worda to that effect. Ostend! Why should he not take & run over? It would be a change, at any rate. and he might discover something about the doctor's mode of life there. Leslie Dethick was convinced that Dr. Shortose at Ostend would be a very different man from the doctor at Orealey; as far as appearances were concerned, his nature would be the same. Dethick had been to Ostend in the gay season, and thought the place fully earned its title of "Giddy." Everything seemed in a whirl, both inside and outside the Kursaal. On the tantfe he had lingered long, and seea unaccustomed and occasionally cnedifyiat: slights. He had slipped over from Margate once on the La, Marguerite, a.fter a swell lodger who had decamped with his infatuated landiwe jewellery and ooins. (To be continued to-morre^.
