THE CITY OF THE JUST.
THE CITY OF THE JUST. By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C., OF THE SOUTH WALES CIRCUIT (JOINT AUTHOR OF LADY DELMAE, CHAPTER IX-Continued. Ben o'r Cae. We find in the world, or, rather, in the men, women, and children of the world, cer- tain phenomena, certain likes and dislikes, certain attractions and repulsions, passions, delusions and lunacies, and we jumble them all up together and give them one common name, "love." The mother says to her child. "I love you"; the child responds, "I love you." The aged wanderer says to his long- while mate, "I love you," and she responds, "Ever the same. Darby, my own." The inno- cent, child says to its playmate, "I love you. let us be sweethearts," and she nestles her lovely curls close by his head, and they wander through fields picking the bright flowers together. The young man says to the maid, "Come, I love you," and she answers with a blush and a sigh. The libertine says to his mistress, "I love you," and she responds, "Yes, yes, let us love, for to-morrow will come. and then who knows?" Is all this the same? Is all this love? Nature is a strange country, in the midst of which we travel and of which we know but little. God says to man. "Go thou into the world, increase and multiply," and in obedience we have, perhaps, one kind of love. Man is vain and conceited, and in response to his cravings for admiration we have another kind of love. Man is generous and charitable, and we have yet a third kind of love. Man is filled with the sense of duty, and we have a fourth kind of love. There may be more-I know not; but so far as I see these four, together with all their deficiencies and excesses, go to make up "love." A youth meets a maiden—she thinks that she is fair to look upon. he thinks he is handsome, clever, intelligent; he glances at her with admiration. At first it may be but a passing look; she observes it, she is pleased. She is pleased with him and thinks well of him, and shows it. shyly perhaps at first, but suffi- ciently for him to notice. He forgets the glance he gave. he knows he is admired, be braces up while she is near. Somehow or other he thinks better of himself, and better of the being ^who is the cause of this self- satisfaction. "A girl of discernment," he says to himself; "A man of judgment," she thinks. Then presently they begin to talk. (They begin to talk about each other. You I take an interest in the person who has admitted an admiration of you, you want to see what sort of person it is. Up to the mument of that admission you talk about yourself, you enlarge, you seek to win admira- tion. Once won, your interest is to some extent transferred to the person who ha, succumbed to your powers of fascination. So they commence an animated conversation, mutual admiration proceeds in arithmetical progression, and it culminates in "love." As the preacher says, "All is vanity." But presently contact develops defects. Unwisely said, each hears, "You have faults, and I tell you of them." Wounded vanity bristles; anger, disappointment—dislike even- supervenes, and of that love there is an end. Next, of the generous, unselfish love; the ) love of heaven, I should perhaps prefer to call it. It is a love in winch self plays no part; you stand aloof from the object of your love -one great self-sacrifice. It is the love of the mother ffr her child-the love which caused I the fatteil calf to be killed. It seeks no reward. It craves for a response, no doubt. but the love goes on whether that response comes or not. It is full to the brim of charity and forgiveness, it surrounds the cherished j being with a protecting atmosphere; sub- mitting to torture to save it from the-smallest pain, blind to faults that are glaring enough to other eyes. There is nothing of the flesh in this love, it pushes lust away as too coarse to exist side by side with it. It is the love with which God loves man, the only love which can go on and on and on to all eternity. The sense of duty produces that love which man has for his country, for those who are in sorrow or in trouble; he is urged on to actions that are not prompted strictly from a desire to do them, but from a sense of right and wrong, and in this lies its distinction. It does nut strictly appertain to love, and yet it is scarcely ever absent, and forms an element which regulates and controls love more or less. be it the love of the flesh or the love of heaven. Then so far as we men and women are con- cerned, we have, standing apart, yet govern- ing and directing all, the love of the flesb- passion-an obedience to Nature, and to the Divine ordinance when regulated-the love of hell when Uncontrolled. Zolaism denominates it "the only love," and delights to gloat over its base excesses—"realism" they call their expositions, as they interpret it. The species of realism which administers justice by exag- gerating one set of facts and ignoring the others. I have been compelled thus to digress, so that I might the better explain Bob and the motives which animated her. A woman, no doubt; and at first, perhaps, a woman with the same passion and love as other women. but her deformity had almost from her infancy preyed upon her mind. For her, the love of marriage was not to be; she had decided that. She had eliminated the love of the flesh from her nature absolutely, com- pletely, and for ever. and the love of heaven alone remained in all its glorious fervour. She loved Stephen Eccles. For a single moment in the Caves of the Llwchwr it seemed as if her whole life was to be falsified. The woman's love had burst forth suddenly, violently, then instantly had been destroyed. It had been a desperate ordeal, one which she had never dreamed to have gone through, but one which had removed all doubt from her mind for ever. She was braced up now, she could smile and think and enjoy life as she had done before; the path of her duty was straight before her. She might long, perhaps, at times that some day or other in the distant future Stephen might say to her. "Always the same, Darby, my own." But she would not purchase even this at the expense of his happiness. He loved Winifred. Winifred had responded, not as she herself would have done on her knees with her heart in her hands, offering it to him entirely and without reserve, but still, for the present, enough. Winifred was young, and the young do not realise the magnitude of love; they live too much in to-day, and true love thinks on eternity: and since he loved Winifred, and his happiness was bound up with Winifred, so must it be. "Ben, are you ever going to do any good for yourself in the world?" "Don't know, indeed. Miss Bob." Bob was on the path leading to the cave. and Ben. more bold than usual, had paused in the road and waited for her to come up. "You really ought to be ashamed of your- self. a smart young fellow like you, and drinking too. I hear, now." "It was only once. Miss Bob: 'deed it's the truth I'm saying." "Once too often, Ben; besides, once becomes twice by-and-bye, and so on." "I was so angry. Mies Bob, 'deed, I did not drink much." « "Why don't you take and do something like a man. and pay off the mortgage on your farm." "It's gone too late for that." "It's never too late. You know what they say, 'It's never too late to mend.' "I be Ben o'r Cae now, and Ben o'r Cae 1 will be till-" "Nonsense, you ought to be thinking of get- ting married, and settling down, -and all that." "Me married!" Ben laughed at the idea. "D'you think. Miss Bob. that any woman, any respectable woman, would marry a. 'dda-i-ddim' as I am?" "Of course they would if you were to settle down; plenty of them, and very glad, too." Ben swallowed something in his throat. "D'you remember, Miss Bob, many years ago when I climbed that tree and brought you the pigeons' eggs from the hollow up above- for you and Miss Winnie?" he corrected him- self. "You have a very good memory." "For some things maybe I have! That was the same day I showed you where t'he Llwchwr cave was. I pulled you up when it was dark, and you slipped your foot; and I pulled Miss Winnie, too; and you're grown up young ladies now, and I ain't changed for the better." "That's your own fault, Ben." "I am not for denying it." "But you ought to correct it. Down, Myrtldin!" this latter addressed to the spaniel who had jumped up and licked her hand. Ben looked at the dog. He ha.d never wished so much that he had been a dog himself. "Miss Bob. is Mr. Winstaple coming from London again soon r' Bob started—she was brought back to the present. "I'm afraid so." "Miss Winnie won't be for throwing the doctor up?" queried Ben. "Of course not! Of course not!" responded Bob. firmly. "But she's very young, and young girls-I beg pardon, young ladies. I mean—isn't always to be depended on!" "You need not be afraid, Ben." And the doctor, he be a real fine gentle- man, wi*h a true heart." No doubt of that." I could depend on you. Mise Bob, but somehow or another I have not that depen- dence on Miss Winnie: t-hp be so very young." She is more than eighteen." "Young girif arc like young hares—they do be a bit max1." Ben had evidently conceived a mistrust of Winifred. Bob fought against it. the more perhaps that it found an ccho in her own bosom. They walked along silently for awhile, all the time making for the cave. Ben bad his gun on his shoulder, and now and then whistled "o his dog, who was search- ing the hedges and fields cn either side. That ttioro Win«ta<ple don't mean no goa4 to the rector." I am afraid not, but my father will listen to no one." He talks that big about money, and all manner of grand things in London. Is he very rich, Miss Bob?" I can't say. My father has some business with him." They had arrived at the entrance of the cave. Good-bye, Ben. Now do try and listen to my advice; turn over a new leaf." I heard John Jones, of Wa-unlae, say that there rock is coming d'own every year, and. indeed, I do believe it's the truth." replied Ben, to turn the subject, and scrutinising the rock, which formed the arch of the cavern. Nonsense! It has stood two thousand years just as it is." Ben shook his head. It isn't safe, and if it was to come down the cave and all would go along with it." Bob apprehended no danger; it was, so far as she could see. just the same as it had been ever since she could remember. I think it will last my time," she said, laughing, and disappearing in the cavern. Noswaith-dda-chi, Miss Bob," which, being interpreted, meaneth Good-evening." Ben marched away in silence. For the first few moments Le thought over the risks that Bob ran in still visiting the cave after it had been pronounced dangerous by so great an authority as John Jones, of Waunlas, and he made up his mind that he would carry on a, series of observations on his own account, which would assure him whether there waa any real danger cfr not. Then his thoughts turned to the conversation he had had with Bob-to the subject of the engagement of Wiai- fred with the doctor, and to Mr. Effingham Winstaple. The more he turned it over in his mind, the more certain was he that matters were a great deal more critical than Bob seemed to imagine. It was no business of his, cer- tainly, but then in some undefined way he considered that he stood in the position of a. brother to the two girls. The rector was in the oonspiracy; they had no one to fly to for protection, and Ben o'r Cae was determined that, at any rate, whatever a poor devii oI » poacher could do to make the course of troa love run smooth should be done Sometimes the idea that his life was not of much value, and that if the worst came to the worst it would not, take him long to make short work of the broker. crossed his mind. but he dismissed it.
