THE CITY OF THE JUST.
THE CITY OF THE JUST. By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C., OF THE sorTH WALES CIRCUIT (JOIN-T AUTHOP, OF LADY DELMAE "). 'CHAPTER IV-Continued, The Caves of the Llwchwr. "V,-ell. you know. we are poor, Tery poor. Father has been unable to save--and-" "Bob!" in a tone of reproach. "I beg your pardon-indeed I do, Dr. Eccles." "Call me Stephen—no woman has evei called me by my christian, name within my memory." "I am sorry—I said that—indeed I am- Stephen; but then the world does think of such things." "And I am not like the rest of them. Money! What is money compared to love?" "Ah. yes; what is money indeed compared to and the word died on her lips. "But come, you really think that if Winifred could care for you, you would wish to marry her? She looked in his face now. The stronsr will had succeeded in trampling down for the moment the misery which at one time had got the upper hand. 'I would. Bob—listen"—then he took her hand—"I would sacrifice my whole life for ue-r; she should be the "world to me; she should never know a moment s pain; I would make her happiness the business of my life; 1. who have never known love—not even a mother's love—I would make up for lost tims Bob. for a great deal of lost time. I know what you have been to her; I know how you have been more. far more, than a sister to her. and so I come to you. Say. can you tTust her to "Yes, Stephen; I could trust her to you." I "And would you be with us always? Our home should be your home. What happy times; What happy times!" "¡-ell. well, I won't promise: besides, you I would get tired of me; old maids, you know, I are not always the best company." "Never, Bob. riovc-r! Who could tire of sweet Bob? Old maid? Oh. fie." Why, I should not wonder. Bob. I should not wonder-" He was light of heart, and did not know what he wa6 saying, or the burning irons be was plunging into her soul. The struggle waa almost too much for her. Why did he not go away?** "I should not wonder if one day "Hllsh:" she said. standing in front of him; "hush! Don't laugh at me. I am a cripple. and—and—and Then she burst into tears, burying her face in her hands. "Bob, sweet Boh, forgive me! You know I did not laugh at you. Laugh at you: At the dearest, sweetest, noblest woman that ever was b[)rn ?, and he put his hand on her shoulder affectionately. "Why. how could you think such a thing?" "There, there. I was only foolish: of course you didn't mean to lauirh at me, I know that very well. I suppose we are all sensitive about our weak points." "I protest. Bob, against your calling your- self a cripple; you are quite morbid upon that subject, and I must really read you a, lecture." She shook her head. smiling through, the bright tears that stood in her eyes. "Let's talk about Winnie," she said, to change the conversation. Then they discussed the future, and what he should do, and when he should propose, and what he should say to the rector; and no one would have thought to have heard them that with one it was the birth of happineas, and with the other the funeral of a heart. "Bob. when we are engaged will you ailow us to come into your sanctuary?" he asked, looking around him. If you are worthy of the honour. "We will endeavour to be. Let me be a schoolboy again for a minute. I will carve your name upon the rock." "Ah. yes, let it be here—just in front. 'Here lies Bob, poor Bob I' "Again, Bob, you are really morbid; you make one creep. 'Here lies Bob,' in this damp place too?" "Well, then just put 'Bob. "Yes. the stone is soft enough: I will carve 'Bob.' So he pulled out his clasp knife, and he carved her name. the name she was known by, upon the rock. and whilst he did so she looked over his shoulders at the letters as he shaped them. "There now, what do yon think of that? My hand has not lost its cunning since I was a lad and barked the trees with my initials, has it now?" "-No. but it wants something, does it not?" "What is that?" "The artist has not signed hig work." Oh. of course!" Then underneath he car7ed his initials, S. E. "Will that do, my task master?" "Yes, some day or other I suppose, in hun- dreds of years to come, they will come here, and they will say, 'Who was Bob?' "And something- will tell them that she was a dear, kind, beautiful girl, who lived hundred of years ago, and whose name ought always to be remembered. Goodness me. Bob, what am I doing! I am forgetting all about my patients. Old Evans will be sure to send for Dr. Morgan if I don't visit him to-day; and there's Mrs. Prosser's baby; we mustn't lose patients just now, muist. we? Will you walk over the mountain with me?" "0, you will go quicker without, me; besides. I have my book to finish, and I want to think over what you have said." "Will you be my friend. Bob?" Tes." "May I come in, this evening?" "Do; father will be at home." "I don't want to see the rector; at least not-" "Well. I shall be there. I suppose you would be almost rude enough to say you don't want to see me?'' she smiled maliciously. "Don't be cruel. Bob "I won't, "Winnie will be in then; now go, anJ mind you bring us word this evening how mr. msser's baby is. Good-bye. He kissed her hand, and presently she could hear his heavy tramp on the mountain side as he went, and the tuue be whistled in the joy of his heart. For several minutes she did not stir; she was alone now, and Elie could throw off the mask in security. r-he stood up and pressed her hands to her head. Ah! was it a dream? Had she her. asleep? Xo. there it was, her epitaph, the cpilaph upon the tombstone of her love: "Bol) And he had carved it with his own hands and signed it with his own name. Then she went through the interview again, every word of it. The moment, the single blessed moment when ehe had thought that his love was for her. for her. for ever. and her heart had bounded within her with the fulness of her* joy; and then the crushing, blinding pain. "Oh. Winnie, Winnie, why you? Why not some other? It would have been so much easier if it had been some other." She sat down again in silence, and she listened to the bubbling of the water and to the cooing of the rock pigeons in the castle ruins; but it was all so mocking now. She had suffered belwre, but w hat was it to this ? Then almost v J guiltily ehe placed her lips against the cold rock where he had carved her name, and kissed the letters whilst the hot tears coursed down her cheeks one by one. CHAPTER V. Money. The rector had been fidgeiy for some time. Nearly a fortnight had passed since Mr. Win- etaple had returned to town, and the sudden, fortune had not come to hand. Mr. W in- staple had sent one or two type-written circu- lars of a guarded character, which contained nothing definite. Then, again, upon the recommendation of the broker, the rector had subscribed to the "Financial Poster." and that righteous and high-minded journal had not been so enthusiastic respecting the pros- pects of the Queensland gold mines as the reverend gentleman would have wished. Something had gone wrong in the negotia- tions between the promoters of the coinigur and the editor of the paper, and the latter was marking time for the moment. The bears had been operating successfully lately, and Mr. Winstaple had not seen his way to making a market for the new shares just at present. "If we are to proceed to lodge an appeal to the Privy Council we must be put in a posi- tion to do so," Squeers, Son. and Philpot had written, which meant that they wanted money. "To be bothered in this way. when it is only a matter of a day or two before I shall be in ample funds, is really too bad, the rector answered. But the lawyers were cautious people, and if they did not immediately repeat their demands, they at the same time took no for- ward movement, which was particularly irri- tating to the rector, who could not but see the smile of satisfaction which the Rev. Timothy Swiggles, the evangelical vicar of the adjacent parish, wore upon his countenance when be heard of the pecuniary difficulties into which his brother clergyman had become entangled. Christian cha'rity! How touchingly sweet when seen in the shape of ecclesiastical litigation. Then all at once a light broke upon the dark horizon. The rector received a letter— "I have a good deal to discuss with you. I- want the benefit of your opinion. I shall do myself the pleasure of running down to see you. I shall put up at the Dynevor Arms, and in the evening will drop in and smoke a. cigar. 1 hope you won't be engaged. Things are looking up briskly, and in a day or two. at the latest, we can make a plunge." And the signature was that of Effingham Win- staple. "Ah," eaid the rector, "it is well: I was making myself uneasy about nothing; the business will go smoothly now, as I always expected it would." Then Bob was sent for, but she had not yet returned from her walk, so Winifred was taken I into consultation as to whether or not Mr. "Winstaple could be put up for tha night at the rectory; but in the end the rector himself bad to admit that it was im- pos5iW.e. "Bob. there's news; Mr. Winstaple has come from London, and is going to see father to-night; but oh, dear, how ill you look! whatever is the matter with you?" "I've got a headachc. Mr. Winstaple, did you say? You'll have to look after things; I must lie down. No; stay. Winnie, there a some one else coming; I will see to Mr. Win- staple and father." "Some one else Bob; who?" You'll find out soon enough." "I know, Bob; you needn't make a secret of it; it's Topey. "It isn't Topsy. And Winnie, put on your1 pink gown, and I'll lend you my pearls for your hair; and I'm going to curl you up my. self." "Bob, what are you talking about?" "I said you would find out soon enough." "Tell me now, Bob," and the vixen put her arms round her elder sister's neck; "father says it isn't good for one to be made anxious. "Fiddlesticks! I won't tell you. so it if no good worrying." "Oh. Bob, you are angry. But there, dear, you nre ill." "Am I? I told you I had got, a headache. Now get along, you've got no time to lose; I'll be up in a minute." Bob had got through the first interview with Winifred better than she had expected. There was a shadow between them-a shadow for the very first time, and such a one, it was as dark as night itself. Winifred knew nothing: about it. and she never should. Bob. in the two hours that had elapsed since the interview with Eccles, had had time to reflect. He loved Winifred, her own sister Winifred. At first the thought had been terrible—Winifred her rind! Winifred had won his love which was denied to her .How gladly she would have died, for five minutes of that love! And it was j Winifred's, all Winifred's—all, all, for ever j and ever. She measured every love ia her own bushel. I If lie did Dot win Winifred, would he not suffer the torments she sufi'ered now, he—her love—her hero? No. no; Winifred should love hiin—she would not dare to refuse him it was not possible but that she would gratefully accept such joy. And then in the depth of her own sorrow, would it not be sweet conso- lation to see him happy? Of course. Winifred would make him happy; she must, she should. So it came about that when Bob arrived home she had resolved upon this marriage, and had made it her business to bring i& about. Mr. Winstaple did not come until late. it was part of his system not to be impetuous; he preached impetuosity to others; for him- self it was another matter. Dr. Eccles had preceded him, and was enjoying some music with the girls and the rector in the drawing room when the broker was announced. Mr. Winstaple entered smiling and bowing; the rector welcomed him as, his good angel. Bob was pleased, because she knew he had come on business. and the old port had been prepared in the library, so that her father and the broker should pair, which would leave the road clear. "Dr. Eccles. Mr. Winstaple," said the rector. "A snob," muttered the doctor; "an impedi- ment." thought the broker—gauging the situa- tion to a nicety, and bowing profoundly. The music v.cnt on for a wbile. hub played 11 piece, then Winifred and Dr. Eccles sang a. duet, whilst the rector thought of stocks and shares, and the broker came to the conclusion Lhat he must not let the grass grow under his feet. They asked Mr. Winstaple if he would sing, but be excused himself. lie could easily have given them "Two lovely black eyes" or "I had a little puppy dog," but he had doubts as to the effect of such ditties; besides. hie voice would not compare to that of Eccles, and he felt the necessity of shining. r "Mr. Winstaple." caid the rector, "will you come with me and smoke a cigar? a glass of '47 port. perhaps: we can leave these young people to their amusements. When we get up in years we take our pleasures merer solidly." "As you wish. rector," remarked the broker, who for the last ten minutes had been feast- ing on the rounded .form of Winifred; but don't you think that the influence of years and experience is at times of advantage?" And lie looked at the rector with confl.d€nvial hesitation. 6 do be continued.;
