THE CITY OF THE JUST. a
THE CITY OF THE JUST. a By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C., OF THE SOUTH WALES CIRCUIT (JOINT AUTHOR OF LADY DELMAB"). CHAPTER XV-Continued. A Peremptory Demand. Winstaple wrote pla-inly. A clean acquit- ta-iiice, and something over. And the price- Winifred. It was unfortunate that the bar- gain should take that form. still more unfortu- nate that there should be such, urgency. Time might have done so much. He loved his child, who up to now had had such faith in him. She had been almost his Dora's parting gift. He had nursed her in his arms, she had knelt close by him in prayer, she had kissed his cheeks so lovingly, had stood in the hall waiting his arrival, and held his hat and cane so often at parting, had smiled into his face with such confidence, he could not force her into tears now. She hated this broker. He would not drive her. No, it was impossible; it waa demanding too much of him. Then he rose and paced the room for a time, his hands behind him, and the broker's letter between his fingers. What was to become of him ? He was ruined. The living would be sequestrated. His enemies would rejoice and reign victorious in his stead. He might earn a precarious livelihood elsewhere. They might leave him something, perchance, from the living. It was to the creditors' interest to keep him alive. He was getting old—scarcely fit to begin life once more. What would become of his chil- dren? A life of miserable drudgery, perhaps. Decayed gentlewomen! How do they live, and what becomes of them in the end ? What a misfortune that Winifred should have taken a dislike to Win staple. He was good looking, clever, wealthy, suitable in every way. Really, how exceedingly foolish of her! Why is it that we cannot put old heads on young shoulders? It would save so much trouble. Those young heads will persist in believing they know everything; will never accept the benefit of experience when it is offered to them free and for nothing, but pre- fer to pay for it at the most extravagant rate. She might, perhaps—that is if he did not repudiate her when he heard of the rector's downfall—marry Eccles. What a life of drudgery! The wife of a struggling village doctor. Compare that with the sort of existence that the broker offered. What a fool the girl was! Really there was no other word for it. Well, now really, after all, what was demanded of him as a father? Was it not his place to protect his children from folly? Sup- pose one of them should wish to cast herself into a fire, would it not be his duty to inter- fere by main force if necessary I And what was this but a case of suicide? They might say that he wanted Winstaple's money. People always placed a dishonour- able construction on everything in this world. He would refuse it. He would decline assis- tance of any kind; he would face his difficul- ties like a man, but he would not. because he was afraid of what might be said, shirk his solemn duty. He was getting old. He should have to account soon. What mattered the remnant of his days so that hia cnndren were* well and he himself had a clear conscience! He took up his pen and commenced to write to the broker. He had received his letter and highly appreciated the sense of honour which had dictated it. "I have every confidence in you, and you may rely upon my assistance to induce my daughter to accept the proposals which yon made to her through me, and I trust that she will accept the advice which I shjall give her, and give her strongly, in a dutiful and appreciative spirit; but as for money, that cannot be. There is nothing for me but to resign my charge; the Church-" There he stopped. The Church—the Bride of the Lamb! What account should he render of that solemn charge? He had been too hasty. He had thought too much of what people might say, too much of his own daughter. What was the clamouring of impious tongues compared to this one great duty? Other men had sacrificed wife and children, fatherland, name, honour, their own lives; all for the great Cause. And here was he turning aside for fear of what people might say. No. no' The Almighty had placed in his hands this opportunity of continuing! the great fight for the liberty and purity of His Bride, and he would gratefully accept it. The rector tore up the half-written letter and commenced again, promising that every- thing that he could do to bring Winifred to reason should be done, regretting deeply the obstinate attitude which the girl had taken up. He, also, had noticed the evil influence of Bob; but that should be removed. Then he thanked the broker for his promise to pay the claim of the liquidator; accepted the offer to foxVard JE200 to Squeers, Son, and Philpot. "I am delighted to find that you have so much courage. It is a quality which almost ensures success in everything'. I myself never falter. I plan out a thing according as my conscience dictates, and then I go straight forward, neither turning to the right nor to the left. I think if you-could come here and visit us for a week we might arrange our future procedure, so that, working in har- mony, our hopes and wishes would be realised. I agree with you that a visit to London would be an excellent method. Winifred would see that the parish of Pen-cwm-garw is not the whole world. She would realise the advantages which as your wife she would possess. I will get you to see the liquidator eo that we may gain as much time as pos- sible, because time fights on our side." Then there was a good deal of condolence over the mutual losses which they had sustained, and a pious hope that in some shape or other the evil-minded persons who had brought about their misfortunes would meet with a just, reward. "You need not have protested your bona fides. I never for one instant doubted you- I hoped all would end well. But we are not the arbiterf of our own destinies, and we must submit reverently to One Who, in trouble and in joy, directs our affairs for our eternal welfare.—Youra ever sincerely, Hugh Stepney." Bob saw the rector at dinner, and when she did 80 she felt that by some means, more or le-se dishonest, the broker had entangled her father once more in a. fresh series of disasters. CHAPTER XVI. PRESSURE AND RESISTANCE. There was trouble brewing. Bob was not slow to observe that the rector had gone round. He was evidently meditating some- thing, and that something boded no good for Winifred and Stephen Ec-cles. There had been no word of hostility towards Mr. Winstaple since his letter had been read in the study in the morning. Mr. Stepney's opinion of the broker had obviously undergone a change; besides, he was not so depressed. He had spoken defiantly of the promoters of the Ecclesiastical litigation, and he had prophe- sied ignominious defeat for them, which showed that sequestration and ruin had passed from his mind. Bob had related to Winifred- the events^ of the morning. She had taken her younger* sister into her confidence absolutely, ever since the day when she had told her of the bargain between their father and Mr. Win- staple. Bob had further added what she con- J jectured with reference to the broker's letter. and over and over again she had pressed Winifred to swear fidelity, eternal fidelity, to Stephen Eccles. Winifred was thrown into a state of great alarm. Ruin" means something so un- fathomable to the young. It sounds like pun- ishment of the bitterest kind; it is a disaster so great that it cannot be understood; ,t means immediate starvation and death. So great is our love of money that our children absorb a dread of its loss with their mother a milk. They learn to mistake "ruin" for "low of hope," and they weigh it accordingly. The rector was ruined. The living would be sequestered, and they would be thrown out upon the world—abandoned and disgraced. This was the aspect it all took in the mind of Winifred. At first she had considered -everything as lost. Stephen Eccles would never, could never. marry a girl placed as she was—the daughter of a bankrupt; it. would be impossible. But then Bob came to the rescue—Bob, with her ideas of fidelity and of love. Stephen would, of course, do as she would herself have done had she been in his place. He would not be swerved from the true course; as between him and the rector, bygones would be bygones. Her father would discover in the hour of trouble the sort of man Stephen Eccles was. And, as Winifred. listened to Bob, she caught somewhat of the heroic spirit. She was like the mariner who feels the ship foundering under him. but who knows that a stout lifeboat will. after all. take him into port. She looked to her lover for safety, learned in her heart to lean heavily upon him, and to cast away all other support as unreliable. It was not until late in the evening that the rector had fully made up his mind as to how he should set to work. The task which he had before him was a difficult one. It was one which required a good deal of self-preparation; he must screw up his courage to the required pitch; he muet steel himself against all manner of entreaty, of argument, yes, even of tears. He must hold his solemn duty straight before him. and never for an instant take his eyes off. Some- how or other, the natural obstinacy of his character had given signs of wavering lately, particularly at critical moments, and he must nerve himself against any such, weakness. Bob had kept close to Winifred all day. She wished to be near at the critical moment to give help; to lend strength to her sister's power of resistance. Besides, she was a little in the dark. Had she known the contents of the broker's letter she would have understood what to do. She would have appreciated the direction of the attack, and she would have schooled Winifred for the defence. As it was, she was compelled to watch, to try and obtain a clue, so that she might give Wini- ired some preparation. At last it came. The rector informed Wini- fred that he wished to speak with her alone. trad hu it. twi* imu M. QV_ was gentle-always a dangerous symptom; it meant a steady siege, with trenches and mines. There would be no rush at first, that, would come at the finish. Bob would have interposed, but the rector looked "You dare!" and she was obliged to stand aside and pray for strength for Wini- fred. Winifred gave her a glance of confidence. Perhaps the girl might be relied upon after all. Bob was thankful for that glance. It meant steadier nerves and more power than she had suspected. "Come, my child, sit down. I wish to speak to you about your future; indeed, I may may. about the future of all of us." "Yes, father." "I have some bad news to tell you—very bad news; and yet not altogether so bad. for there is a good deal to relieve the darkness. Come close to me, dear. Put your chair there." And as he spoke the rector arranged her near to him. and took her hand in his, caress- ing it. "You never knew your mother, my child. It pleased God to take her to Him in the ful- ness of her life. We must not lament. Wa have always said, 'Thy will be done.' But I have, so far as a man could, always striven to fill her place, and I hope I have succeeded, at any rate, to some extent, to save you from feeling too much the loss which you have sus- tained." The rector paused for some response. She looked upon the ground; she made none. Ht gave a little sigh-a sort of disappointed ex- pression-which almost made her look up. He had assumed a benign countenance, which he desired her to observe. "Up to now my task has been comparatively easy. Our existence has been calm and peace- ful; and as the rector of the parish, and a. man of experience and education, I have been able to give you that instruction which has fitted sou to fill any sphere of life to which you may be called." Here he stopped for a few moments for his words to take effect. He continued: "But all at once a. great disaster has befallen me; a disaster so vast and overwhelming that I greatly fear I shall no longer have the means to watch over you and protect you. I shall have to leave my daughters to the care of a harsh and unsympathetic world. Winifred, my dear, I am a ruined man." The latter was said with, much dramatic intonation, with a tremulous voice, almost with a tear, and was followed ,d by dead silence. Had it come as news to Winifred it might have had its desired effect. As it was, she only waited for what was to- come. "I see," continued the rector, "your sistec has prepared you for what I had to say." "Bob said that you had lost some money, father-a great deal—enough to ruin us." "And it is no exaggeration, my child I have not only lost a great deal of money, but the amount is so large that I can never hope to pay it, and there is nothing before me but to give up the living to my creditors I am indeed ruined. You see I wish to have no secret from you. I have told Bob, and now I tell you, exactly how the matter stands "Of course, it will be very sad to have to leave home and give all up; but Bob says. father, that we need not be quite a burden r on you. We could do something for ourselves. We could teach." "It is very easy to talk of teaching: it it not so easy to do. Everyone nowadays think. he can teach. There is great difficulty in obtaining employment." He wished to depict the position at its worst to begin with. The more distressing the future could be made to appear, the greater would be the desire to avoid it. Winifred cast about in her mind for something to say. Had she dared, she would have mentioned Stephen Eccles and matrimony, but she had. to keep silent with respect to the real hope in her heart, and nothing else occurred to her, [ (To be oontinuec4
