FOOTBALL SKETCHES
FOOTBALL SKETCHES The Hero's Revenge: A Tragedy. SAD FATE OF THE LUCKLESS REFEREE. 'Twas dawn, and o'er the sleeping town King Sol Shed forth his luminous lume on each and all. Hark! what was that—the sound of cannons' distant boom? No—yes—no, 'twas the milkman's tuneless tune. Tke mighty athlete raised his sleep-clogged head, Gazed out on Nature, and-sighed for more hours abed. But, no, it cannot be," said he. Oh, woeful woes, The day will come," and e'en as he spoke the sun arose. Like a lion uncaged he sprang into his clothes; Like a lamb, hie young wife led him down by the nose. To prepare for the day's most kazardous taefl. She fed him, and bathed him in the rain water cask. As the great day wore on o'er her features were spread — I RAISING HIS SLEEPY HEAD. Fears, hopes, dejection, subjection, and dread. "Oh, Brutus," sfee breathed at length in his ear: Not for my sake. but for heaven's sake, don't drink too much beer. For you go forth to dangers—nay, death you may catch." may catch." (He was going to play in the great football match.) Take heart, my sweet peachlet," he answered her ba-ck; "If I don't lay 'em all my name ain't B. Jack." So he went forth with stout heart, and sighing for gore, And he clenched hie teeth like an off-drive for four. As he thought of the thought he thought more and more Of the referee towards whom his heart was so sore. The mighty crowd circled the ground round and round I As with tiger-like leap he leapt" on to the ground. BUT NOT THE REFEREE." I List, there was a hush, you could hear a pin drop As on to the earth he sprawled with a flop. Ten thousand voices cheer'd him as he rubbed his hands in dirt; Ten thousand voices ckeer'd him as he wiped them on his shirt. I And he gazed round upon the crowd with lofty scorn—disdain. Then continued to do his knickers just the very same. very same. But, hark! the hush bad fallen once again upon the crowded main; He'p kicked at the ball and missed, and his face "was spread with pain. A mighty shout announced that in his eye has come a gleam BELIEVE US, HE SAID HE WOULD." I That spelt "revenge," to look you'd think his face was almost clean. He then rushed madty up the field. To do or die." said he. Then kicked for goal, missed the ball. but not the referee. And landed him within the net as clean a.s what he blows: Then the mighty hero wiped the perspiration off his nose. By that great stroke he won the match, as all great heroes should. And we asked him if he'd take some drink, and, believe us. be said he would. —SWINBUB.NE AUSTIN AND CO.

ASSOCIATION CODE. Interesting Cup Tie Games. FINE WORK AT MilFORD. PATER MATCH. Llandaff Fields this afternoon will be the home of more good games than have ever taken place in Cardiff at the same time. Two of these matches are cup ties, the draws of last Saturday compelling re-plays. The Albion Club went to Mardy, and every credit is due to them for the result. They went up a man short, and had to re-arrange the team. Each side scored once, and narrow "shaves" were then the ordsr e tuc day. The t-eam must have struggled srameiy. for an .e-ident to Jeffreys necessitated the visitors playing nine men. The Maruy ir.ds played a nice open game, and to-day, as I have said, the two teams meet agr. in on the fields. The Banks were playing at home. and had to be satisfied with a draw of two goals each, after a very pleasant match with Cwmpark. The re-play takes place on the same ground, and both teams are pretty confident of entering tl13 third round. But the great fixture is the first of the two annual tussles between Cardiff and the Corin- thians. Interest in this is always keen, and if the match could take place on an enclosed ground in the town, there is no question that a good gate would result. During the past aeasone, neither side has ever won by -much, and I don't expect heavy scoring this time. On form, however, judging from the clubs which have been opposed by both, I should say that Cardiff will win. I shall watch for the result with interest. An additional interest i11 the match is the presence in the Cardiff eleven of John Rey- nolds, the famous half-back, who figured in so many battles for TVest Bromwich Albion, Alton Villa, and for England against Scotland- He has recently settled in Cardiff, and his keer- ness for the game is as strong as ever. He has just returned from New Zealand, and dons the Cardiff town colours to-day. He was one of the famous Aston Villa team which won the double event, viz., the English Cup and the champion- ship of the League. In his day. the half-back line-Reynolds, COTan, and Groves—was con- sidered second to none, and his play with such forwards as Jack Devcy and Charley Ather- smith was a. treat to see. The way he and Devey would work the ball so as to get open- ings for the speedy Athersmith will not he forgotten by all who ever visited the Villa, ground. If in no other way, his services as a. coaeh to the young and earnest team in Car- diff should be invaluable. To-day he takes a. preliminary canter to find his football feet after his long voyage. It is a pity that Milford and Pembroke Dock are so far away from the majority of South Wales clubs, for the play in last week's cup-tie was such that makes one think that they would hold their own m the South Wa-tee League. The match was the topic of the day, and a visitor thereto would be reminded-of such games as Aberdare v. Aberaman and Nelson v. Treharris. for there was surely a record crowd of spectators present. The match was splendidly contested from the kick- off to the end, and when time was called Milford had qualified for the third round by the narrow score of two to one. The referee was Mr. Morgan, of Nelson, and he gave every satisfaction to all concerned by his capable handling of the game. Both teams have a. good line of half-backs. The defence of Pem- broke and the attack of Milford were pro- minent, the combination of the home forwards being very fine. One thing is certain, th* teams which will have to meet Milford in the succeeding rounds for the cup will have some- thing to £ 0 on with. Last week's Welsh Cup-tie at Porth was a. bit of a surprise, inasmuch ae the powerful Aberaman eleven only just managed to will in the last five minutes. I had not seen Aber- aman before, and must say that I bad expected better. At the same time, the ground was all against class play, for it was so hard and frozen that the players on both sides were taking no risks. The ball, too, performed some curious movements, bouncing off a hard knob in the most unexpected manner. It was this peculiarity which really, in my opinion. beat Stone and gave the visitors the second goal. Stone had got down in preparation for a ground shot which was coming in, when the ball suddenly rose and jumped into the net over his head. The first goal came from a penalty kick which followed a foolish bit of handling the ball inside the area by one of the Porth hacks. Porth had a penalty kick in the first half, but failed to make anything of it. Two goals to none sufficed to give Aber- aman the participation in the fourth draw, but they will have to show better play if they are to go any further. A feature of the conteet was the admirable refereeing of Mr. Hoberts, who let nothing escape him. The best man on the field was Grant, the centre- half for Porth, who was ever in the thick of it, encouraging his men on by word and work. The victors have now to meet either Bangor or Portmadoc, which means a journey from one corner of the Principality to the other. It is a coincidence that it is last year's draw reversed. In the cup-tie at Gilfach v. Aberga-venny- the home lot were deserving of some sym- pathy. The visitors did not do a great deal of pressing, as they were rather afraid to do much finessing on the hard. frosty ground. They scored three times, and the homesters once after a lot of hard, grinding work. Merthyr Yale were rather surprised a.t the opposition offered by Tydu Oddfellows. To run the formidable Yalians to a draw speaks well for Tydu. as it is only a short time ago that, they were in the Junior Medal Competition. If they go on like this, they will provide a. profitable recruiting ground for Rogerstonc. I could hardly believe it when I saw that Nelson had made a draw with the powerful Aberdare team. The former had not won a. League match, and the latter had not lost one. They play, and the result is a draw. The Nelson club has a hard struggle, with many obstacles, chief of which is the difficulty of players of experience in getting off to play. This result will be extremely encouraging to the Nelson officials and players, and will do no harm to Aberdare. But, all the same. I think that everybody thought the Yisitore would win. This afternoon is devoted to the senior cap ties. The pick of the matches is at. Roger- stone, where those old favourites. Porth are again the visitors. The performance of Nelson last week will, doubtless, have the usual good enect on the gate at Aberaman. and the fix- ture should be profitable to both. KERNELS. Merthyr Yale have a good back in Lewis. A If Turner captains Llanbradach. in grani style. Lewis Thomas is improving at centra ■ forward. r Smith, the captain of Milford, can play. He would be a credit to any team. Hoad was the best man on the field. Pallot played his best game last week. Matthews was as usual. Underbill saved many hot shots. Soccerites pleased last Saturday night: Toot ball edition was greater part Socoer Rugby games stopped by the frost. Rough on th-3 Rugby men. Get the referee's permission to leave the field. If not. it is a serious matter. Cardiff District League team will be picked next week.
