A STHBLE MYSTERY.
A STHBLE MYSTERY. Byi NAT GOULD. Author of "The Double Et tnt*" "Settling Day," "In Royal Colours," Ac., &c. SYNOPSIS.—Mr. Catteran Cres ley's Blue Blood was struck out of the list of .runners for the Cesarewitch almost on the sve of the race. As Blue Blood was first favor trite. this action occasioned much comment unfriendly to Cresley, a man of stainles e honour. Tke horse had. in fact, been poisoned. Here was a. complete mystery. Be ïrl. Fitchett, the trainer, and the stable lad 1 azrton, who did the horses on the eventfu I night, being unable to cast any light on .the subject. A detective (Leslie Dethiek^ wa j at once called in to investigate the matt er. Meanwhile,, another horse of Mr. Cresl fy's iPancake), which is expected to hare no i*chance, is still amongst the starters. Bu u Long Tom. belonging to Dr. Stanley Sh< wtose. a neigh- hour of Creslcy's, advances to the position of favourite- The race-day la-rives, and an exciting contest takes place. gin which Pan- cake piays a surprising part I winning by a bead. Dr. Shortose tries in "rain to induce his jockey to lodge an object Ion. The doctor is very hard pressed for moi tey to meet his creditors. Some of his bool nnaker friends promise to help him. He alsi ) asks Cresley's sister fa Mrs. Kent) to man •y him. in the hope that her fortune might tide him over his difficulties. Mrs. Kent, refuses him. Cresley. however, agrees to Gend him two thousand pounds. Meanwhil t. the doctor went up to London, where he Jwas shadowed by Leslie Dethick, the det< i'tive engaged inquiring into the poisoning tf Blue Blood. Dethick reluctantly came to j he conclusion he must have been on the wr C'ng scent, and that the suspicions he enter fcained against him were wrong. He was m, fre determined than ever to be on the right t rack, and went down to Cresley again to mal ? more search- ing inquiries. I CHAPTER XI.-Cant inued. He caught his man in the K nrsaal, and on taking him back to Margate the offender attempted to jump overboard.. Dethick was too smart for him. and said, a i he flung him on to the deck with a crash: "My dear fellow, a. watery grave is not your portion at present, althcogh you may ultimately come to that. I ar anxious you should prepare for that event 1 jy four or five years' earnest work in one of 1 tie schools for bad characters established b y a. paternal Government." To Ostend Dethick went again. jand, although it was not the season, he foi --rnd plenty of strangers there who daily wen ded their way towards the tables. He strolled about the quain t. streets, and listened to the curiane jargon cf the people. He looked into shop windows, and wondered at the fearful eatables he saT r therein. He entered a tram and went to the terminus, and then returned to the town. He repeated the ride, and the conductor regarded him with euspicicon, and had seriol as thoughts of handing him over to the aut] WJrities as an Anarchist. Xobody but a mad 'Anarchist, he thought, would ride up and dc lFn in a tram for the mere pleasure of the .thing. Fami- liarity with cars had bred in Jiim contempt for them. Towards ten at night Dethicl t strolled into a well-lighted room, where me si and women were collected chatting, smokir tg, and sitting round gaming-tables. He kne" F the class of people; they were all of the sa lpe type. A man in authority recogn teed him and greeted him with respect. 1 he name of Dethick meant much. to this r tan. "Can I hare a few words wi pi you?" said the detective. "Certainly, with pleasure. C gme in here," and he opened the door of a pr irate room. "Have you. ever met a gentlen tan named Dr. Shortose?" Leslie asked, abrupt ty. and by hie manner indicating he knew 1 jis companion could answer in the affirmative. The man seemed uneaay, but the detective's eyes were on him, and he said: < "Yes, I know him." "Does he often come over to ( Intend?" asked Dethick. "Yes. many times in the ootrrj x" of a year." "Gambles heavily. does he no J?" "Not here, I assure you." "Oh, no; of course he woul fl not gamble heavily here; you never allow j t I asked you if he gambled heavily. You know the men who do." The man shrugged his shon Iderø and held out his hands in a depreca-tir t manner. "Why are you so anxious to learn what Dr. Shortose does here:>" he asked. "Because he is a friend of mi ine, and I mean to look after his welfare," am tiered Dethick. The man chuckled to himself and said: "Goüd. very good. I know w ita-tit must be like to be a. friend of yours." "Come, tell me about the d fetor, there's a good fellow. I may be able to tdo you a. turn some day," said Dethick. I After a moment's hesitation the man said: "Dr. Shortose is a heavy gai tbler, and he is fond of gay life. There is one troman here to- night could tell you more ab- Jrat him than I can." "Vlill you point her out to 1 pe after I have heard what you have to say?" "Yes. Dr. Shortose lost he; tvily here last season." Then, lowering his v oice, he said: "A curious thing happened e ft this woman's house. A man, who had won 1 heavily, went home with her and Dr. Shortos, In the morn- ing he was found insensible oi 1 the sea front. He had been robbed and dru: cged. It is my firm belief he waa d rugged at the woman's house." "I think you are right," sai B. Leslie. "Show me the woman." The man opened the door a aid they looked into the room. "There she is. seated at the end table, the woman in black, with a fur ro And her neck." Leslie Dethick stood behind her chair and she did not observe him. She was losing, and this irr Stated her. Suddenly she rose from th e table, turned round, and saw Dethick. He looked straight into h, gr face, almost rudely, and she resented it. "Have you seen me befor e?" she asked angrily. "Yœ. with my friend Dr. Sh, irt-ose," was his unexpected reply. He saw her turn pale an( t gasp, and a frightened look came into her eyes. "Who are you?" she asked. "Your friend if I may be," h t said. "I wish to speak with you." "I am going home; you c in come," she said. I He followed her out of the rc cm and walked by her side. "I do not understand yon." she said in at low voice. "I allude to the gentleman who was drugged, by Dr. Shortose and robbed in this house." "It was not in this house." She saw she had committed herself, and added hastily, "I know to what you allude, but we had no hand, in it." "We!" "Dr. Shortose and myself." "I do not wish to interfere with you," he said. "I am Detective Leslie Dethick. She started in aiarm. "I see the doctor has mentioned my name to you. Come, tell me how he spends his time here." "You are his enemy," she said. "Granted. I have no wish to be yours." "He gambles; be has a passion for it. He has lost large sums here," she said hesita- tingly. "Is this his house?" asked Dethick, ruth- lessly. "Yes, he pays the rent." "I strongly advise you to have nothing ta do with him; lie is a dangerous man." She laughed mockingly as ehe said.- "-Not dangerous; he is quite harmless, I assure you," He gathered from this that Dr. Shortose was under her spell, and he did not admire his taste. He bade her good-night and left her wondering why she had answered his quest ions. "He's a man at any rate," she said as she saw him go down'the street. "What a will he has. He could have forced me to answer any- thing." Dethick was satisfied. He had guessed Dr. Shortose led a double life, and now he knew it. He went back to the gambling-house, and asked the woman's name from the man wh4 had pointed her out. "She passes as Madame Trebclli," hat replied. "What kind of a woman is she?" "Extravagant, given to high play. A woman who would ruin any man." "And Shortose?" "He's a fool. and infatuated with her. Sha can get anything from him. He pays her debts." And the man turned up his eyes and shook his head to show the hopelessness of the doctor's case. Next day he returned to London. On the steamer he chatted with the chief steward. There were very few passengers. They were old acquaintances; Dethick knew so many people in widely diverging walke ot life. "Ever met a man named Shortose?" asked Leslie. "Shortose. Dr. Bhortose—owner of Long! Tom. Yes, I know him. He made me back his horse in the Cesarewitch." "And it didn't come off," laughed Dethick. "I had half a sov. on the winner." "Some men are born lucky," growled thq chief. "Do you know Shortoae?" "Yes, I have met him several times." "Rum fellow. Regular gambler." said the chief. "Fond of the girls, and all that. He's often over at Ostend." "Free with his money?" queried Dethick. "Was at one time. Can't say he is now. He borrowed a fiver from me last trip he waa over. and I haven't seen him since. Said he. was short of ready and had been cleared out at the tables. There's lots of 'em like that, growled the chief. "You ought to set up a loan office," eaidf Dethick. "And borrow the money myself, laughed; the chief. Dethick went on deck and inhaled the sear breeze. "My friend the doctor seems tb have gone the pace. No wonder he is hard np. And when a man is short of coin he often becomes desperate. I think I can sum you up, doctor, after my little trip to 'Giddy Ostend.' CHAPTER Xll. GRAVE ACCUSATIONS. Leslie Dethick was at home when a wire reached him requesting his presence au Creeley as quickly as possible. "They have found out something. I'm off," he said cheerfully. On arriving at Cresley Park Mrs. Kent saw him. "I am in great trouble." she said, "Dri Roberts advised me to send for yon. Mr. Cresley, my brother, has been poisoned." "Poisoned!" echoed Leslie Dethick. in tLtter4 astonishment at the unexpected aianuunce, ment. "Yes. Ar|sen.ical poisoning. Dr. Eoberta states." "That's the same poison that did for Blua Blood," said Dethick. "Dr. Eoberts thought there might be 80IDQI connection between the two cases," she said. "And he is probably right," replied Dethick, his eyes gleaming as he fancied be saw the, net closing round the man who had baffled him and given him so much trouble. "Please do not allow Mr. Cresley to know am here." he added. "I am sure it will be better for me to teli him." she replied. "It will only annoy him if he discovers it himself." "This is a very delicate matter, and require I careful handling." said the detectivc. "You must carry out Dr. Roberts's instructions and prepare all his food yourself." "That I shall certainly do," she anawered. I "Is Mr. Cresley not in bed?" he asked. "Dr. Roberts has ordered him to keep his, room for a few days. but it goes very mucA against his wish for him to do so." "It is all for the best. He is safer there.. In that time I may have discovered some. thing." Leslie Dethick called upon Dr. Shortose the night of his arrival. The doctor professed to. be glad to see him and greeted him cordially. Had Dethick been aware that Dr. Shortose knew be had been shadowing him he would have been surprised. Such, however, was the, case. and the doctor had been enlightened. unwittingly, by one of his numerous gambling acquaintances who knew the detective by sight, and out of curiosity had watched him. following Dr. Shortose from a Londua station. "When Dr. Shortose saw Dethick coming up the drive to his house, a wicked look cam* into his eyes. and opening the sideboard he, took out a whisky decanter, and removing the stopper dropped something in that ha had taken out of his waistcoat pocket. i "So you are still on the track of the Blue Blood nobbier?" said the doctor. > To be Continued to-morrow.)
