"Oh! dear me, I forgot to give TUDOR WIL- LIAMS' BALSAM OF HONEY to my children before they retired to bed. I am certain they will COUGH ALL NIGHT WITHOUT IT. There is nothing- on the face of the earth equal to it; thoroughly up-to-date." In this damp and changeable climate Coughs and Colds are almost certain at some time during the winter to visit every household in the land. It would, therefore, seem only a wise precaution to keep on hand a bottle of TUDOR WILLIAMS' BALSAM OF HONEY ready for immediate use. Pleasant, soothing, healing, and a splendid tonic, it is certainly without an equal for the prevention and cure of troublesome coughs and in all throat and :ung affections. Moreover, it does what no simple cough remedy will do—it promotes appetite, aids digestion, increases weight, and builds up the health and strength generally. It contain* no opiate or other narcotic, and is perfectly safe even for the youngest infanta. I am constantly receiving reports from all parts of the kingdom attesting its remarkable power to relieve and cure troublesome coughs. IT IS PRESCRIBED BY THE MEDICAL PRO- FESSION. and USED in the LEADING HOS- PITALS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. BALSAM OF HONEY Contains PURE WELSH HONEY and Ðn essence of the purest and most efficacious Herbs on the Hills of Wales, being gathered in the proper season, when their virtues are in full perfection. A STIPENDIARY AND A MAGISTRATE IN THE COUNTY OF GLAMORGAN REMARKS: — I feel it my duty to inform you that I have been using your Tudor Williams' Balsam of Honey in my family, which is a large one, for many years, and have proved its great value, having T'sed nothing else for Cough during Measles. Whooping Cough, and Bronchitis, and can highly recommend it to all parents for such complaints." Try it: you will not regret it. SEE YOU GET THE GENUINE ARTICLE. THE CITY OF THE JUST.
THE CITY OF THE JUST. By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C., OF THE SOUTH WALES CIRCriT (JOINT AUTHOR OF" LADY DELMAB"). CHAPTER IV-Continued. The Caves of the Llwchwr. He dtnered irom most of the people around him in that he was a practical Christian as distinguished from a theoretical one. He could not bring himself to believe in the I inherent wickedness of the flesh, and dogmas and creeds were of very little consequence. He found around him human beings who needed succour in pain and suffering:, and they received it from him to the best of his ability, and without too much consideration as to whether or not they would pay his bill when he sent it in at Christmas. Thus it happened that in his presence people forgot their rancour. The Rev. Elias Jones did not wax so wrath when the name of the rector was mentioned, and perhaps even the rector himself appreciated a little less the importance of the ceremonial which had brought him into conflict with some of his congregation. Dr. Eccles had been a frequent visitor at the rectory. He was a favourite with the rcctor, and also with his two daughters. They found him of immense importance in their village work. When they could add a bottle of medicine, or a liniment, or even a gratuitous visit from a medical man to the other little gifts which they dispensed, it was evidence that the efficacy of their charity became materially increased. Then he was a well-read man. with a large collection of books. He could play lawn tennis, which to Winifred was an accomplish- ment of the greatest value. He was deeply learned in botany, and was not only able to assist Bob in her classifica- tion, but from time to time brought ferns and plants irom the mountains which were rare and interesting. Altogether it was admitted on all hands, even by the curate of Trodyrhiew, that Dr. Eccles was an acqui- sition. People had whispered it abroad that there was a loadstone at the rectory which had attracted the doctor powerfully. Some such idea bad got into the rector's head, and he did not disapprove. The parishioners very soon appreciated the fact. They discovered that ]t was of great advantage, when they felt out of sorts, to communicate their ail- ments in the first instance to MiBs Barbara. or Miss Winifred Stepney; there was such a certainty of immediate medical attendance, and so little to pay for it. The rector had, upon the death of his wife, discontinued his horse and trap. He had no immediate use for it; the parish was small and the parishioners few, and he preferred walking. Dr. Eccles. whose practice extended for a dozen miles round, was compelled gene- rally to drive, and it not unfrequently hap- pened that he would come upon the Misses Stepney on the road, when a drive home in company would be as agreeable to them as to him. Then on Sunday evenings he would call upon the rector, and over a glass of port friendship would be consolidated. An old Gloucestershire squire had been in the habit of dropping in-3, sporting man, full of anec- dote. who kept conversation brisk—and after- wards when they heard in the drawing-room the girls' voices to a hymn or a psalm, they would take it as a hint that the gentlemen were expected to join the ladies. Nothing had annoyed the squire more than the proceedings which had been take.1 against the rector by Mr. Wertzell and the others. What do a lot of louts understand about the Rubric?" he used to say. "I say to myself there's the parson, it's his trade to look after such things. He don't interfere with my sport, and why should I interfere with his? D- it, sir, when I was a young man I'd have lopped their ears. the da.ring caitiffs, that I would, but now every man's as good as his master, and a deal better; every- body knows more of everybody else's business than he knows about his own. Politics ain't left to statesmen, nor religion to parsons, nor law to lawyers, nor doctoring to doctors; it's a. sort of Civil Service Stores, and you buy everything at the same shop. We are all journeymen of our own trades, and masters of everybody else's." And the rector would say Hear. hear." and tap the table in approval. The squire had been a confirmed bachelor, sixty years of age and over; he bad taken a great fancy to Bob; her daring spirit delighted the old fox-hunter. She's game," he would remark, which was the greatest compliment he knew how to pay. When it had got to the squire's ears that Dr. Eccles was paying marked attention to the rector's daughters, and that Winifred was the favourite, he buttonholed him on the very first occasion. Look here, sawbones—now, no offencc. hear what I've got to say first. Winifred is all very well, nice girl, pretty, too; don't fire up. I'm not going to say anything against Wini- fred; but Bob's the game 'un. mark ye. she's the game 'un; and if it should be that any young fellow I fancied, mind you—any young ftllow that saw straight—should pop the ques- tion to Pob-well. if a matter of a couple of thousand on the wedding-day would be any use to him in his profession, there it would be. I'm not joking, and I'm not tight; at least, not yet. D'you understand?" But the old man had been taken away suddenly, and now the rector and the doctor alone sipped the port, and had it not been for the prospect of the music with the girls after- wards it would have been a dull entertain- ment. But I digress. Stephen Eccles arrived into the open part where the river bubbled from the mountain. He paused and looked at his watch. Only twelve' Well, he had a few moments to rest, and he sat down and watched the tiny trout jump from the water at the summer flies that were so foolish as to get within reach. All was still, there was not a sound; the lark was high up. true, but the voice of birds does not disturb the repose of nature. He had heard many times the legends of the caves, and they set him dreaming. He could from where be sat see the precipitous rock which the ruins of the castle were perched, and he thought of the beautiful Gwladys cast from that height, and disappearing for ever from the sight of man. It was well that all that sort of thing was gone. It was a brutal, barbarous age, that old. heroic past. Presently he wajs startled by a voice-a girl's voice, seeming to come from nowhere in particular, singing to a weird air— 1 dreamt of the spirit of love, Kpirit of joy, spirit of woe. Spirit of joy from heaven above, Spirit of woe from hell below. Then there was a pause, and after a moment ft low, bitter laugh, "Ha! ha! ha!" then silence as before. He sprang to his feet. He looked around in every direction; nothing, not a. sound. Was it from the cave? He dared not call out although it was noonday; he seemed spell- bound. Who could the singer be? and what an extraordinary song! He peered iaato the darkness: it could scarce be there; no one could get into the cave without a. coracle or boat, or something of the sort. He even looked up the tree. He would wait a moment; perhaps it would come again; he iiad been taken by surprise the first time. He sat down on a rock and listened. Presently there came a sigh-a deep sigh—a woman's sigh; there was no mistaking it. it was from just above him. where the three firs grew. He stood up and cautiously climbed over the heather, and as he got nearer he could distinctly hear sobs. a woman weeping. He stopped. Should be go on or retire? What right had he to intrude upon this woman's distress? He hesitated. At that moment the stone upon which he stood gave way. and rolled with a splash into the river; he only just succ-eeded in avoiding a similar late. The noise startled tftfc singer. She gave a slight cry, and then all was still. He pushed his way to the firs. and, peering between the huge trunks, perceived a natural cavern in the rock behind, and hidden in there, seated on a, shelf, with a. book in her hand. Bob. "Dr. Eccles? how you frightened Dle! But why have you conic here?" There was not a trace of tears now. "I apologise. Miss Stepney. I assure you I am the creature of circumstance. May I come in?" "Yes." laughed Bob. "that is. of course, if you can find the "Where you can reach, I surely can get, too." "I don't knew; you are not so thin as I am." "The thinnest of persons could not get between these firs; there must be some other way." "Well. you must find it." And she leaned back and watched his efforts with amuse- ment. Could this be the woman, he thought, who bad been singing that weird song. and sigh- ing and weeping? "Your stronghold is well guarded. Miss Stepney. Did I not know you well. I should imagine that you were the Princess Gwladys. and that these trees had grown purposely to protect you." "You have heard that story, then?" After a, moment, "I will put you out of your misery; there is no entrance this way. Now climb down again to the river—there now—look up- do you see anything?" He wae puzzled. "Two stepping-stones, almost covered with wa-ter; walk upon them boldly." He did as he was bid. and entered the cavern of the Llwchwr. It was not dark, and he could see a ledge of sand a little further on. He stepped upon it. "Straight on—now to your right." The sound of her voice came from within. He looked up; the light came in from above. and the figure of the girl could be seen stand- ing in the dim rays as she directed him. A few steps rather steep brought him to her side. "I feel as if I hnd entered an enchanted castle. However did you find it out?" "I have a genius for exploring." she replied. ''You must not carry it too far. I have be-en told that there are precipices and other dan- gerous places in there." "I am not afraid. I have been as far as the pool of death. Have you heard of it?" "Did you go to try your fate?" "Oh. no, that would not be interesting-l went to try and catch one of the fishes that have no eyes." "You would have been very unlucky if yoa had succeeded." "Do you believe in luck?" "I don't know." He paused a moment. "Sometimes I am tempted to try my fortune. He spoke softly. Bob raised her eyes an instant in surprise, then she cast them to the ground and felt that she was blushing furiously. "Dr. Eccles." she said spasmodically, in despair, "this is a, very old cave." "Goodness knows how old. he answered, looking around. "I should like to explore it immensely; there must be many remnants of an old rude civilisation which would be of great interest. This ledge upon which you sit is evidently not the work of nature; it, has been carved some time or other out of the solid rock. The tunnel up which we came is also not natural. I can fancy that once it must have been closed in there where the trees are-that it has been opened out by a fall, and the trees seem to have grown to close it up again. It was probably a hiding- place long before the castle was built. If these walls could speak, they could tell us some strange things, no doubt. The men and women that they would speak of would be clothed in different garments, but there. they would be men and women all the same. just as we are." "And they would tell of suffering?" "Yes. and of love and happiness perhaps. e'Ah. poor things There was* a pause. "Miss Bob—Bob—do you think if I were to, ask you something—something—a favour- a very great favour, you would grant it me?" Bob looked on the ground; her heart beat against her bosom so that she could hear it. For her. the cripple Bob, there was to be love after all-this man, who had filled her great lieart from the first moment she had seen him. was hers-herB. Then all aL once came n revulsion. She was a cripple; he ehould not throw himself away like that, no—no, a thou- sand times no. "It depends," she answered very gently, 'upon what it is, Dr. Eccles." "Will you let me speak to you as I would to a—sister." For a. moment she did not answer; she mly heard "a sister." She struggled fiercely :0 be calm. outwardly calm. "A sister—oh, yes, if you wish'it, of course, Dr. Eccles." "You know I have no father or mother, op iister or brother, or kith or kin." "Ah, but you have a sister now." "Do you mean that?" and he took her hand tnd raised it to his lips. "I do. indeed." Then nothing was said for 1 few moments. He was thinking how he should say what he had to say. She was iving over again that one instant when love iad been in her heart to burn as it had never turned before, and to die as suddenly as it iad been born. "Bob; do you think that Winifred —— rhen he stopped. Sha started. "Winifred!"—she could not lelp repeating the name; it was such a shock. "Yes. Winifred. Do you think that Wini, 'red would ever consent to be my wife?" "Dr. Eccles!" "Have I made a mistake? Tell me. Bob-. ny sister. Have I built hopes that are utterly m possible ?" "Oh. no-I don't know-I did not think-it, vas so unexpected!" Bob would have rushed; tway, but she was as it were locked in. "Has she never thought—fancied that per- iaps I "Oh, I am sure she has notr-it, was so eai ikely." "Unlikely! Why?" <To be oontiiBHfldjf-
