A STABLE -MYSTERY.
A STABLE MYSTERY. By NAT GOULD. Author of The Double Event." "Settling Day," In Royal Colours," Ac., &te. CHAPTER XV-Continued. Walking about pondering over the doctor's disappearance he thought it might be as well to wire to Creeley, asking for Dr. Shortos-e.s letters to be sent to him. In due course they arrived. There were half a dozen. Five were demands for money, but the sixth made him start. He read as follows after the usual form of address: — "You have gone too far. I always said you would do so. and now I have proved correct. Leave the country at once. Dethick is a clever, dangerous man. I am certain he sus- pects you. because he has ma.de inquiries about you. Call on me at Putney—you will know the addrese-and I will see what I can I do for you; but mind I will not be mixed up in your affairs. It is because you saved my little girl's life years ago that I am willing to help you now. I am sorry you have gone to the had. You are a clever man, and ought to have stuck to your profession." The letter was signed Silas Hogg. "That's the bookmaker." said Dethick. "This letter must have arrived after the 1 doctor left. and would be an answeT to one he had written. In that case Hogg may not have heard about the death of Max Starker. That has been kept dark. but the inquest will make everything public. I must act at once." He went to Putney by train from Waterloo. and called upon Silas Hogg. The bookmaker was at home. "Did you write this letter to Dr. Shortose?" asked Dethick, handing the epistle to him. "Yes," replied Hogg, surprised. "How did you come by it?" "Never mind that; it is sufficient that I have it. Are you aware that Dr. Shortose is 1 wanted' on a very serious charge, and that we believe he has confederates?" Silas Hogg turned pale as he answered: "Confederates! What do you mean? "Dr. Shortose is wanted on a charge of poisoning Blue Blood, and we think there were others who knew of his intention," said Dethick. looking hard at him. "I know nothing about it," said Hogg, hastily. "T suppose not." replied Dethick. "But you laid heavily against Blue Blood, and that is suspicious. But there is a more serious charge than that against him." "What is it?" "Murder, and also attempted murder," replied Dethick. Silas Hogg gasped. "I'll not believe it," he said. "It is true. Look at that," and he handed the warrant which had been made out since Max Starker's death. Silas Hogg read it, and his hands trembled as he held the paper. "I would never have believed it of him," he said. "Now you can see how dangerous it is to be associated with such a man," said Dethick. Hogg moved uneasily in his chair. "Has Dr. Shortose seen you lately?" he asked. "ife cabled t £ e^a?^iefor?Ve«terday. "What did he call for?" "He said he had been obliged to leave home before he received my reply to his letter, and he wanted to borrow gome money." "Did you lend him any?" "Yes. A hundred pounds." "A cheque?" "No, notes. Ten tens." "Have you the numbers?" "Yes. I seldom bother about them, but I happened to get these direct from the bank, and they sent me a slip with the numbers on," said Hogg. "May I have these numbers?" "Yes," replied Hogg. and took a slip of paper from his desk and handed it to Dethick. "That will do," said the detective. "I shall not trouble you again about this matter. One question more I want you to answer. Did Dr. Shortose say anything about going away for a time?" "-No, nothing whatever." "You are quite sure?" "Yes." Armed with the numbers of the notes Hogg had handed to Dr. Shortose, Leslie Dethick made strenuous endeavours to trace them. Passing by a money-changer's at Charing Cross Station entrance, he saw five ten-pound notes in the window. They were clean and new, and the numbers seemed familiar. He took the slip of paper from his pocket-book, and compared the numbers; they were iden- tical with five of the notes given by Silas Hogg to Dr. Shortose. "Here's luek," thought Dethick, M he entered the door of the shop. "Please tell me when you received those notes," he said to the man. -1 am a detec- tive. Here are the corresponding numbers." "A gentleman changed them this morning for French gold and silver." "What time?" "A little before nine." "Did he appear to be in a hurry?" "Yes. thought he was going to catch the nine Continental train." "Can you describe him?" asked Detihick. The money-changer gave a fadrly accurate description of Dr. Shortose. "He has not even taken the trouble to dis- guise himself; he must feel fairly secure," thoua-ht Dethick. He thanked the man for his information, adding: "The notes have not been stolen, but I want the man who passed them. Good afternoon." Leslie Dethick went to Dover by the first train, and made inquiries there, which led him to cross to Calais and proceed to Paris the same night. Before leaving London, he telegraphed a des- cription of Dr. Shortose to the police at Paris, and on his arrival learned to his satisfaction that a ma.n answering Dr. Shortose's descrip- tion had arrived at the Nord Station, before five o'clock, and had been followed to an hotel in the Rue St. Honore. Thither Leslie Dethick proceeded. ?Qu inquired at the ITotel Madeleine for Dr. Shortose. There was no such visitor, and he then described him. and learned be was etav- ing there. He determined to wait for the doctor's return. About three in the afternoon Dr. Shortose entered the hotel. He saw Dethick sitting in the hall, and, walking up to him, held out his hand. "A pleasant surprise," he said. "I did not expect to see you." The detective declined the proffered hand, and said: "May I speak to you privately for a few moments?" I "Certainly." said Dr. Shortose. "Come in I here." They were alone in the smoking-room, and Dethick said. "I have a warrant for your arrest, doctor." Dr. Shortose did not betray the least sur- prise or alarm, but said oooiiy: "There must be some mistake. With what am. I changed?" "With poiaonins Mr. Crwley s Blue Blood, with attempting to poison Mr. Cresley and myself, and with the murder of your servant. Max Starker." Dr. Shortose laughed. "This is too absurd." he said. "It is past a joke. Who dares bring such ridiculous ohaj-gee against me?" "I dare, and I will prove them." said Dethick. "Dr. Shortose, you are my prisoner." He stepped forward to arrest him. but, as he did so, Dr. Shortose, with almost in- credible rapidity, drew a revolver from his inner coat pocket and struck Dethick a ter- rific blow between the eyes with the butt end. The detective dropped like a- log, and Dr. Shortose walked quietly out of the hotel. When Dethick recovered his senses, he sat up and gazed about him. No one had entered the room, so he could not have been long in that condition. He staggered to his feet. His head throbbed painfully, and his eyes were black and swollen. He related what had taken place, and the police were communicated with. Detective Langlois had a long consultation with his English confrere, and a sharp look- out was kept by the polioe for Dr. Shortose. "He will not get out of Paris." said Lang- lois. "I will guarantee that. Our system is perfect; he cannot escape." Leslie Dethick was too ill to take further action, and had to remain quiet for three or four days. During that time nothing had been heard or seen of Dr. Shortose. It was on Saturday morning that Detective Langlois called upon Leslie Dethick. He looked grave, and said: "We have your man, I think: are you well enough to come with me and identify him?" ies. said Dethick. "Where was he found?" I will explain all when you have seen him." The victoria went over the Seine, and passed close by Notre Dame. The driver pulled up at a small unpre- tentious-looking building, where many people were lounging about outside in an aimless way. The detectives stepped out and entered. their movements being watched curiously. Inside everything was dull and forbidding. Huge glass windows were protected by an iron railing to keep back the people. Behind the glass, on raised, sloping slabs. were three men looking like waxwork figures. The central figure riveted Leslie Dethick's attention, and he stepped back quickly. "That is Dr. Shortose," he said. They were in the Morgue—the dread dead- house of Paris—which has seen so much sorrow, so many tragedies within its walls. On either side of the doctor were two poor homeless wanderers, starved to death in this city of luxury and pleasure. On the doctor's face was a sardonic smile, and the articles found upon him were resting on his legs. It was a grim sight, revolting, but necessary, to prove the identification of the beings who were "found dead," either in the Seine or in some of the lower quarters of Paris. H itA fd P -Le81ie Dethiok. "Near the lake in the Bois de Boulogne, in the woods. He had selected a. quiet spot to die in, and used a pleasant means of death. He must have taken enough morphia to kill a horse," said Langlois. "There is a. paper amongst his belongings, said Dethick. "It is probably a confession of his crimes. It look like such a statement, and it is care- fully and closely written," replied Langlois. "You identify him, I suppose, and demand possession of the body?" "Yes. He is Dr. Stanley Shortose, of Oreeley, Fairshire, England, and, as I said I would take him dead or alive, I will keep my word, and have his body removed to the scene of his crimes," said Leslie Dethick. (To be concluded on Monday).

A good story is told of a certain living judg& who is notorious for a certain disposition to assert the dignity of his office. He was travel- ling to London recently in an ordinary first- class compartment, when a gentleman entered and began to smoke. "You may not have observed, air,- said the judge, "that this is not a. smoking compart- ment." "Isn't it?" said the gentleman, but he went on smoking. "I protest against your smoking in a non- smoking compartment," said the judge. "Do you?" said the gentleman, but he con- tinued to smoke. The judge rummaged in his pocket and brought out a visiting card. on which was inscribed, "Mr. Justice —— handed it to the smoker, and sa-id- "This is my name, sir, and if you persist in smoking, I will report you when the train stops at the next station." "Will you? said the smoker, glancing at the card, and then putting it in his copper- poiket. "I certainly shall," said the judge, and the smoker went on with his smoking. In due course the train stopped, and then the smoker got out and walked down the platform to the "way out." The jud £ e, in a towering rage, called the stationmaster, and insisted that he should follow the man and take his name. Very reluctantly the stationmaster overtook the smoker.
