"Oh! dear me, I forgot to give TUDOR WIL- LIAMS' BALSAM OF HONEY to my children before they retired to bed. I am certain they will COUGH ALL NIGHT WITHOUT IT. There is nothing on the face of the earth equal to it; thoroughly up-to-date." In this damp and changeable climate Coughs L'D'ds are almost certain at some time during the winter to visit every household in the land. It would, therefore, seem only a wise precaution to keep on hand a bottle of TUDOR WILLIAMS' BALSAM OF HONEY ready for immediate use. Pleasant, soothing, healmg, and a splendid tonic, it is certainly without any equal for the prevention and cure of troublesome coughs and in all throat and lung affections. Moreover, it does what no simple cough remedy will do-it promotes appetite, aids digestion, increases weight, and builds up the health a.nd strength generally. It contains no opiate or other narcotic, and is perfectly safe even for the youngest infants. I am constantly receiving reports from all parts of the kingdom attesting its remarkable power to relieve and cure troublesome coughs. IT IS PRESCRIBED BY THE MEDICAL PRO- I FESSION. and USED in the LEADING HOS- PITALS THRONGHOUT THE WORLD. BALSAM OF HONEY Contains PURE WELSH HONEY and an essence of the purest and most efficacious Herbs on the Hills of Wales, being gratkered in the proper season, when their virtues are in full perfec- tion. A STIPENDIARY AND A MAGISTRATE IN THE COUNTY OF GLAMORGAN REMARKS:- "I feel it my duty to inform you that I have been using your Tudor Williams Balsam of Honey in my family, which is a large one, for many years, and have proved its great value, having used nothing else for Cough during Measles, Whooping Cough, and Bronchitis, and can highly a recommend it to all parents for such complaints." Try it: you will not regret it. SEE YOU GET THE GENUINE RRTICLE. TUDOR WILLIAMS' PATENT BALSAM UF ±iUJN*i*. BRITISH OFFICERS PRAISE IT. ¡NEVER TOLD HERI LOVE.I
NEVER TOLD HER I LOVE. I Her name was Olympia, and for ten years she had exercised the calling of barmaid at I the station cafe. Her mythological appellation accorded well with her beauty. Her well-developed bust, en- closed in a plain black bodice, rose triumphantly above the counter between the two pyramids of little squares of sugar and the two nickel vases bristling with little spoons, looking like two quivers full of arrows. A mirror behind her reflected her shoulders, which were broad, her white neck, and her abundant jet-black hair gathered into a knot behind. "By Jove! there's a handsome brunette," murmured the traveller, draining his last glass of beer, when they were calling the passen- gers to take their seats in the midnight train; and after receiving the change from the waiter, and making sure that they were not trying to give him bad coin, he cast an ardent glance at the barmaid. The young lady replied with a calm and "professional" smile. The sleepy traveller. ensconced in one corner of tlie. carriage, con- templated the well-built young lady in his dreams; he saw her eyes, like those of the god- dess Juno, and her calm physiognomy. Occasionally some customer approached the counter, rested his arms upon it, and with the greatest politeness addressed a few words to the handsome brunette; but out of deference did not go beyond the bounds of generalities. "The days are lengthening," or else, "The air is chilly," such were the phrases they uttered, to which Miss Olympia generally re- plied in words equally indifferent. It was a thing agreed upon. all the visitors at the cafe that Miss Olympia resembled Marie Antoinette, and that she had the same curve of the nose as that unfortunate queen, the Austrian underlip, and the aristocratic movement of the head. As regards knowing whether Miss Olympia had a heart or not, no one had thought about it. And yet she had one beneath her dread- fully contracted corset; the poor girl had a very sensible and tender one, which upon an unhoped-for day-so long retarded-began to palpitate for the first time. He who caused these emotions, without even remotely suspecting it, did eo every evening at eight in the station cafe. He was a pale young man of 22 or 23 years of age, well-dressed, although his clothes were not very showy; he carried a portfolio under his arm, and now and then in the depth of winter he had on a great coat, and a soft grey hat, discoloured by the sunshine of several summers, which he raised in a most graceful manner when passing in front of the counter. He sat down in the quietest corner, asked for coffee and writing materials, opened his portfolio, took from it books and papers, and remained there till midnight, reading and writing, consulting a dictionary, absorbed in his work, and almost without raising his head. The heart, the good and honest heart which beat beneath the swelling bosom of the bar- maid, conceived, without knowing why, a secret tenderness for the pale young man with the blue eyesi who saluted her with graceful courtesy. She admired him for his industry, and pitied him on account of his poor and solitary existence; and during the long hours which he remained in the cafe poring over his books the time did not seem too long to the poor girl, and her sedentary and material duties seemed less monotonous. It was because she experienced a sensation somewhat confused, but very pleasant, be- tween the two piles of lump sugar and behind the bristling spoons. The young lady was dreaming, but her dreams had nothing of passion or romance about them. She knew that everything sepa- rated her from him who was so near to her. To rise from her chair, to leave her elevated position, to go towards him and to speak to him, was a thing as impossible for Miss Olym- pia as it would be for an empress to descend from her throne while holding a reception, and suddenly make public avowals before the whole court to an obscure halbardier of her bodyguard. Moreover, Miss Olympia was neither mad nor foolish, but modest and very judicious. Edu- cated in the soundest principles, free and pure in her ignorance, and rejecting love unless pre- ceded by a run round to the parish church, she in no wise imagined that a young student, learned in science and with the future before him, would fall in love with honest intentions with a young lady of thirty-five inclined to corpulence, and who had no other means of subsistence than a subordinate and mercenary situation. Moreover, she had remarked, not without some sadness, that when the young man in- terrupted his labours for a, moment he looked at her with the same indifference as he did at the billiard table, for instance, or at the pipe stands of the most assiduous customers. Olympia. asked for nothing—hoped for noth- ing. Only when the young man was there, she experienced, as it were, a warm current of air circulating within her breast. She thought she entertained a maternal affection for the studious youth, and she wished him all sorte of success and prosperity. He would accomplish his object, he would become a professor, and she already saw him at the head of the county technical school. This lasted all the winter, and Miss Olym- pia was happy through it all. But one even- ing the young student did not appear at the cafe, neither did he come the following day, or the next, nor for seven consecutive days. It was the beginning of May, and the charn, of the now mild evenings drew almost all the customers out of doors. Miss Olympia was really troubled, but there was nothing bitter about her distress. Some incident, doubtless fortunate, must have taken place in the young man's fortunes. She thought of examinations brilliantly passed through; of a situation obtained which re- leased him from the supplementary and de- grading work of making translations in the cafe. Truly, she regretted not seeing him there, j dominated by the glance of his unknown friend. But how could it be helped? Such is life. The following Sunday, towards ten in the evening, a spring shower caused the holiday makers from a local train to betake them- selves to the cafe. The barmaid was very busy giving orders to the waiters, and was ringing the bell unceas- ingly. She felt somewhat fatigued, and had just said, Hipolito, two glasses of mint. See what they want in No. 7. when the student suddenly appeared. Although he was perhaps not better dressed than before, he seemed to her to be hand- somer, and as it were resplendent with youth. And Miss Olympia felt her heart beat very' fast. for the youth no longer had books and exercises on his arm, but a girl, young and as fresh as the spray of lilac she wore triumphantly; she was very rosy, had green- coloured eyes and thick lips; her manners ap- peared to Olympia to be somewhat forward; she wore a light dress with red trimmings, and a straw hat adorned with poppies. The pair seated themselves at some distance from the counter, and drank two glasses of I beer at the corner of a table; the enamoured youth. seated by tke aide of his sweetheart, k wa4i whispering to her words that ma-do her smile, and when the rain was nearly over, they rose and went away, bearing with them a sense of life and gaiety which revealed the joy in their hearts. Then only did the poor barmaid, at whom the young man had not even looked, under- stand that she had loved him with all her heart. Her throat swelled, she breathed a deep sigh. the sigh of a stout woman, and was convinced that her romance, her sickly and unrevealed romance, had closed for ever, and that she could not look forward to another. Half stupefied and as if stunned, she watched the heavy drops falling in the street, presaging the end of the storm, without per- ceiving that tears as large as the drops were falling heavily from her eyes. Of' 'e Time has gone on. Miss Olympia still reigns at the cafe counter, but the burden of her life is now full of sadness, and her heart is oppressed when she looks at the marble table at which the pale student with the blue eyes once worked. But sorrow does not cause her to get thin- ner-she is more imposing each time; and when some ancient customer speaks of the resemblance to Marie Antoinette of her who was once beautiful the new customers are surprised. One of these, the young man in charge of the glove department of a fashion warehouse in the neighbourhood, once ventured to say (youth is not over respectful) "that the bar- maid reminds me very much of George IV. on the crown pieces,"
I INTERRUPTION.
I INTERRUPTION. This is a romantic spot," said I, com- placently, as we strolled along the broad hotel veranda after making our escape from the hot and crowded ball-room. A full moon hung in a clear sky, the silvery reflection tipping the waves in the lake. The Japanese lanterns added their soft glow to illuminate the veranda, but in several dark corners interesting groups of two were holding confidential sessions. Some were also holding hands. But when you have a girl along your- self you are not supposed to notice these things. We found a secluded corner at last, and Dotty seated herself in the one chair, while I dangled on the railings. "Most rheumatir-romantic, I mean," said 1. Dotty looked at me thoughtfully, through half-closed eyes. "That's twice," she observed. "H'm! Well. why didn't you say something the first time?" I asked. "I did not want to hurt your feelings." "How kind! And how would my feelings have been hurt?" "I was about to ask what you knew about romance and romantic things?" "Me? Why, I've always considered myeelf an expert." "You haven't the least idea of what love is, even. .L m willing to learn." "And the chances are you will never propose to a girl," continued Dotty, ignoring the inter- ruption. "There! That's just it!" I exclaimed. "If you only knew how badly I want to propose to a girl I have in mind you would pity me." "You in love!" she laughed sceptically. "Incredible as it seems," I assured her. "Well, why don't you go ahead and pro- pose?" she asked. "Now, that s just the point! I don't know how to go about it successfully. These stage proposals, where the hero stands behind the heroine like this and breathes down her neck, 1 Gwendolen, I lyuve you-, "0, quit, that tickles!" "I knew it!" I said, triumphantly. "I always insisted that that sort of thing couldn't land a girl in real life. And those proposals in novels don't sound right. so I decided to con- sult someone who knows—to consult you." "Me?" "I believe I said you. Ever been in love? "0, I don't know. Perhaps." "How reassuring. But you've had pro- posals." "A few." "Now, you're a. friend of mine. Coulda-t you help me out of this matter by giving me some advice about proposing to this girl? "t should consider it a great favour." Dotty looked doubtful. "What do you mean?" she asked. "Can't we have a rehearsal, so to speak, of a proposal scene? People rehearse weddings and Coronations and plays and other minor- affairs, so why not rehearse an important matter like this? The practice will help me to do it smoothly, and will give you a chance to exercise your skill." "And you actually have the assurance to. ask me" "Hold on! I haven't done it yet!" "Well, what do you want to know first?" asked Dotty. "What comes first?" "In the first place, the conditions should be favourable. A quiet spot on a June even- ing-" "In the moonlight." "Yes, in the moonlight is considered a good time," she said, smiling at the moon. "I am listening." "Then you should see that she is in good humour." "I see it." "What? Oh, yes. Please don't interrupt. Then, if the girl is inclined to smile on you-" "Like you are?" "Then-" "He takes her hand, eo," said 1. taking up tho discourse and the Tiand. "and looks ten- derly into her eyes, so. And-" "And she immediately closes them, so," promptly responded Dotty, suiting the action to the word. She seemed to think that ended it—or did she? "And," I said, "he promptly puts his arm- "Stop it! Let me go!" cried Dotty, strug- gling. "This rehearsal is going too far." "We haven't moved," I insisted. "Bat in reality-" "Can't you. be serious?" she asked. "May I?" "There is a limit to this nonsense. Please try to act seriously." "This is a serious matter to me. Bat let's return to our rehearsal, as I suppose this position is not held any length of time, is it?" "How should I know?" demanded Dotty. "Aren't you teaching me to make love? What next?" "I don't seem to be running it at all," she pouted. "You're using your own methods and paying no attention to me." "1 think I'm paying decided attention to you," I insisted. "But I suppose that. no rules are laid down for the rest." You seem to know a, lot for an aumateur." "Well, then, I am to bend over Rently-tbiin —and whisper softly in her ear 'I love you.' said I, acting the lines. Silence followed. "And she I insinuated. "Hello! There you are!" came a roar aa young Baskin pounced upon M. "Been look- ing all over for you.. This is our two step," he announced. Dotty rose, and they walked away.
