THE SILKEN REIN.
THE SILKEN REIN. I By NAT GOULD, r Author of "The Double Event," "Settling Day," "In Royal Colours," Ac., Ac, The true way a horse should be held fast in his running." This should bt done as if you had a silken rein as fine as a hair, and that you were afraid of breaking it."—SAM CHIFNEY. CHAPTER II-Continued. An Old Jockey's Advice. I The first time he met the keeper, after making this discovery, he said, "It's a man f you are, Jack Newhoqae, every inch of you, and if there's anything I can do with 'the boys' for you, I'll do it." Jack laughingly replied "Don't poach, Ted, at any rate, not on our land, and keep 'the boys' as quiet as you can. I know you have a. good deal of influence with them." "It may not be much, and I'll do my best, but Jack, I've always been a poacher, and I always shall be one. It's a disease, and it's incurable." "Then leave these parts and go away for a change of air, it may cure you," was the keeper's reply. It was a. sore trial to honest Jack Newhouse when he knew his lad was deformed and could not be cured, but he bore up manfully against it, and Willie was the apple of his eye. He was very sensitive about the lad, and it pained him to hear careless remarks passed about him. On the whole, however, Willie was popular in Glademere, and it was only an occasional outburst at school that roused him to anger, and then despair. "Have some supper, Willie?" said his father, as he drew up his armchair to the table, and prepared to attack a large rabbit pie, made by Peggy's deft hands. I "I don't think I can eat any," was the reply. "I had such a good tea ■ at the Hall. Mrs. Dennis makes fine cakes and pasties, and the milk's grand." "Master Eddie is very kind to you," said Jack, as he cut a huge slice out of the pie. "He's a fine lad, and no mistake." "That he is. You should have heard him tackle the boys when they jeered at me coming out of school to-day." "D-n them," growled Jack, and his hands clenched fiercely on his knife and fork. "What did the young fools say?" "They called me Humpy, and when Master Eddie came up on his cob, he said, 'Shut up, you beastly cowards,' and they all slunk away. Then he put me on his cob, called here, and afterwards we went to the Hall. He let me ride all the way, it .was fine. He's got a lot of new books, and I IMught one away with me. There's something about Newmarket in it. Sam Ohifney wrote it, it's very old, about a hundred years old, but there's a lot of sense in it." "I've heard tell of him," said Jack. "He was a great jockey once. Rode for a Prince of Wales, I think, and at the last died in the doctor's prison. That was a sad end for such a man. "Master Eddie says when he comes of age I he'B.gtfttig'to have racehorses, anfllhat I must } be his jockey," said Willie. His father dropped his knife and fork into his plate with a clatter, and exclaimed: "Well, I'm blest, what will the lads talk about next." Then he looked curiously at his son, and said: "You'd make a. good jockey, I believe, Willie. You'll never weigh much, and, al- I though you are small, you have plenty of strength in your arms and legs. They used to say at Newmarket that some of the jockeys had very strong arms when they did not win." "It says in this book that the horses ought to be ridden with a silken rein, and that it eases them to ride with a light hand." "Some of the chaps I have seen on horses," replied Jack, "might have had cart ropes in their hands from the way they pulled. I be- lieve they fairly hung on to their mounts that way." < "I want to do something when I am old enough," said Willie, "and if I could only ride well enough I might be able to help you and Aunty Peggy. I'd like to be some good, even if I am different from other boys." "And so you shall," said his father, cheer- fully. "You must learn to ride, and then we shall see how you shape. Let me look at that book, it seems to have set you and Master Eddie talking." Willie handed him the small volume, and he examined it curiously. "It seems strange to read) this after all these years." "Master Eddie bought it with a lot of others. It is worth a good deal of money." "I shouldn't wonder. It's not always the new-fangled things that are worth the most." Peggy Newhouse came into the room and said, as she patted Willie on the shoulder: "What are you two talking about, you seem very interested." "Willie's been reading this book, and it's set Master Eddie and him thinking he might make a good jockey." But we couldn't spare you from Glade- mere," said Peggy, fondly, "and if you took to riding you'd have to go out and battle in the world, and you might be killed. It's dangerous riding in races, I've heard." "But I cannot always stop here and be a. burden to father," said Willie, "and I'm such a little fellow, I think it would just suit me." "If you never did anything you could not be a burden to me," said Jack, "and Aunt I Peggy would be very sorry to lose you. No, j my lad, you must never think that, for you are the life and' soul of our home. Besidies, Peg might get married, and then what would I become of me." | "Don't be foolish, Jack," came from Peggy. ( Willie laughed happily, as he said: I "I'll never say burden again father, and, as for Aunt Peggy, she's not going to be mar- ried until you are." "Me!" exclaimed Jack, with a roar. "There's I no fear of any one casting sheep's eyes at me. "Master Eddie says he believes Mrs. Dennis is fond of me, and bribes me with cakes, be- cause she has designs on you." "He will have his joke," laughed Jack, who did not look ill pleased. "There may be some truth in it," said Peggy, smiling. "Your father's a fine man, although a. bit rough with women at times." "That I'm sure he never is," replied Willie. "Martha. Dennis is a well-featured woman; you might do worse. Jack," said Peggy. "Wait until I get the young master out rabbiting to-morrow; I'll just teach him what it is to play with a man's affections," said Jack. "Then you have some affection for her," queried Peggy. "Pass that to your aunt," said Jack, hand- ing a plate of the succulent pie, "it may give her something to do, and keep her tongue from wagging. It's a trifle sharp at times and runs a bit too fast." CHAPTER III. At the End of the Day. Glademere Warren was a favoured haunt of rabbits. It looked like a sandy waste, honey- combed with holes and pitfalls for the un- wary pedestrian, and was surrounded by densa plantations, in which numerous pheasants and thousands of wild birds made their haunts. It was, in Mr. St. Ann's eye, a barren- plot of ground, an eyesore, and a disgrace to the estate, but to Jack Newhouse it was a goodly sight, and made the sporting instinct in him rejoice. "Whatever is this land left bare and unipul- tivated for?" exclaimed the owner of Glade- mere, when he first saw it. "It's the rabbit warren, sir," replied the head keeper. "And a grand place for sport ill is, sir." "But, surely, it can be improved; it ought to be turned to some account." "It cannot be improved, sir; to alter ib would spoil it, and the rabbits pay for keep. ing, and Master Eddie is very fond of the sport," said Jack. "You spoil him, Newhouse," said Mr. St. Ann, not ill pleased, but he mentally regis- tered a vow, which had been strictly left un- fulfilled, that the warren should be turned, into a verdant pasturage, or planted with useful timber. He never went near the warren, for feap he might be tempted to experiment in altera- tions. Jack Newhouse was for some months in daily fear that Mr. St. Ann would ruin the warren, but as time went on, and nothing came of it, he was easier in his mind. It was to the warren the keeper and the two lads wended their way early next morn- ing, accompanied by several dogs and a sus- picious-loking bag, suggesting ferrets. Eddie carried a gun, specially made for him, and Jack Newhouse had a couple with him. I Willie rode a pony, which his father kept for him in the small paddock at the rear of his cottage. It was a bright, brisk morning, a crisp, sharp air, and not too much sun, and the dew was hardly off the grass, as they brushed along, leaving faint tracks behind. Eddie loved these country rambles, more especially when he had the keeper and Willie for his, companions. The many visitors, young and old, who came to the Hall, did not attract him, and the bulk of them were unfavourably! impressed by him. Learned professors, who had long and' obscure arguments with his father, had not interest for him, and they, in their turn, thought Mr. St. Ann was ruining his son's prospects by over-indulgence in his whims and fancies. Eddie had never been informed of any stu- Mpdoua discoveries being made at these con* ferences. All he knew was that th* sage* looked very wise, and talked in languages ha did not comprehend. In vain he questioned Mr. Wrexham as to the meaning of it allg but that astute gentleman declined to oommjC himself, and with imperturbable gravity answered that these scientific men were beyond him, and their knowledge was tool profound for ordjpary mortals to understand. At the same time, he had his own private. opinion about these wonderful men with strings of letters after their names, and had tney heard that opinion there would have been bitter enmity between them and the tutor. The county people visited Glademere, and most of them stood rather in awe of Mr. St. Æun; his son they regarded with more favour as a reasonable being, who was not entirely nc pproachable. The younger members of seme of these families found Eddie a master- ful, determined young man, who was apt -.o make fun of their society manners, and play tricks upon them when least expected. At first the lads from Eton and Harrow tried 10 assume an air of superiority over one who merely possessed a private tutor, but Eddie gnckly crushed them by proving he knew con. siderably more about the useful objects of life, than the oollared-and-cuflFedi young men, who had a smattering of many things, and a, thorough knowledge of but few. Eddie's posi. tion was safely established, and he was, after some demur, voted a very nice lad indeed, only a trifle brusque and peculiar, which I meant he was more outspoken and straight- forward than the general run of people in their own set. On this particular morning, ae he walked to the warren with his companions, Eddie gave no thought to professors and visitors to the Hall. It would have interfered. with his sport and enjoyment, and that could not ba tolerated. Jack Newhouse whistled, as he tramped along in his heavy boots, and 8Otimee. imitated the calls of birds and received a friendly answer. Eddie admired Jack's whistling skill, and imitated it with a fair amount of success. Willie. seaited on his pony, watched big companions, and was happy in his surround*- ings. He knew he could not take a very active part in their sport, but he loved to be there. and then he had the satisfaction of carrying the result of their forage home on his pony. The warren was about four miles from tha Hall, and they were in no hurry to reach it. The keeper pointed out the various birds and explained their habits. He was a lover and, student of nature, and his knowledge helped. him in his work. Not a man in the county knew more aboufl plants, birds, and wild animals than plain Jack Newhouse, and his subtle knowledge, would have surprised some of his master's friends, and shown them their limitations. All his life he had lived) in the fields and woods, and the consequence was he had a healthy mind and a warm, tender heart. Many a wild animal had Jack saved from perishing in the cold, and when he roamed abroad, over the snow-clad ground, his cap-a,. ciouts pockets were well filled with bread and seeds for the birds. It was a strange and interesting sight to see the. big, burly man, whose duty it was to kill game, as well as protect it, standing amidst the leafless trees, whilst the birds fluttered around him. and took bread from his hands or caught small pieces as he tossed them in the air. They were not afraid of him, and he never forfeited their confidence. (To be continued.)
