There is nothing on the face of the earth equal to it; thoroughly up-to-date." In this damp and changeable climate Concrhs and Colds are almost certain at some time during the winter to visit every household in the land. Pleasant, soothing, healing, and a. splendid tonic, it is certainly Without any equal for the prevention and cure of troublesome coughs and in ail throat and long affections. Moreover, it does what no simple cough remedy will do-it promotes appetite, aids digestion, increases weight, and builds up the health and strength generally. It contains no opiate or other iiirootic. and is perfectly safe even for the youngest infants. I am constantly receiving- reports from all parts of the kingdom aite-stine- its remarkable power to relieve and cure troublesome coughs. THE CITY OF THE JUST. 1 -
THE CITY OF THE JUST. By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C. OF THE SO'CTH WALES CIRCUIT (JOIXT AUTHOR OF "LADY DELMAB"). CHAPTER XXIV-Continued. A Dda-i-Ddim"P Yes, I saw him. Xow look 'here, Ben; tell me the truth-the solemn truth, on your oath." "I did eay the truth, indeed," somewhat doggedly. Which was truth? You told me and the coroner and the magistrates that you found the body of Mr. Winstaple on the road, and Miss Bob by th? side, and that. Miss Bob was I unconscious, and that you carried her into the houee." Yes, sure." I Miss Bob knows you were there, Ben; she saw you." Ben stopped abruptly; they had been walk- ing slowly towards the church. "And was she say anything?" he asked anxiously. I want to hear from you. You told Mr. Theobald that you yourself did the murder. I want to know which is true?" The doctor was whispering; he was afraid of being overheard. See you, Dr. Eccles, this is truth, indeed. It was I did Ü." Then if that is so. how did you pet the knife, and how did Miss Bob get there?" Ben did not answer; he must invent a I story which would hold water. He had always considered that, you had only to say you had done something wrong for everybody to believe you at once; the diffi- culty which had ever presentod itself to him was how to persuade people he had not com- mitted a crime, and not that be had. Those are the two questions I want you to answer," added the doctor after a moment. I was gone into the first cave of the Llwchwr (Miss Bob's cave, as I call it) that morning when Miss Bob was gone home, and when I was there I seen the knife on the ground, and I picked it up and looked at it. and I thought it was belonging to Miss Bob; yee. sure, doctor, and I seen Miss Bob passing in the road, and I run to give her the knife." Ben stopped for breath: he was getting to a critical point in the narrative. "What then?" asked the doctor. "Well. I will tell you if you wait a minute. Well, I run down the road all the way past the forte, and they tell me Miss Bob was gone on some time. eo I run on and on. and when I turn the corner I seen Mr. Winstaple and Miss Bob in the road, and Mr. Winstaple was speaking very savage, and was calling her names, and Miss Bob was answering very quiet like. but I could see she was stand up straight, and said that Miss Winifred was nol for the likes of him-" Ben paused again; the situation was be coming difficult. He wanted to justify him- self in some way. "Go on," said Eccles impatiently; he felt somehow that Ben was not speaking the truth. "Well. then Mr. Winstaple, he got very sa,vage, and he catched in Miss Bob, and she cried out, and then I run up; yes, indeed, doctor, and I forget about the knife, so when I strike at him to defend Miss Bob, I killed him. Look here, doctor, the knife was in my hand like this, and it did kill him, ie yn wir, yn wir." The doctor was shaking his head incredu- lously. Why can't you tell me the truth about it?" I was tell the truth, indeed," with an air of injury. No, Ben, I know better; now say who was it that killed Mr. Winstaple?" Eccies was as much agitated as Ben o'r Cae, but he wanted to know the truth to be sure that he knew the truth. "It is the truth I tell you," slightly less firmly. Eccles noticed the difference; he was confirmed in his judgment: Ben was invent- ing this story. "It is quite impossible that what you say should be correct. Come, come, Ben, you know that I am engaged to Miss Winifred; you know what all this is to me; let me know the real truth, God's truth, as you hope for heaven." Ben looked upon the ground and kicked the enow aside under his feet. It was still failing heavily, and they were getting1 gradually covered; he was thinking what to say. Had it been a, common person, a, policeman, or even a. magistrate, he would have stuck, in staunch Welsh fashion, to his lie. But Eccles somehow or other stood differently in his estimation. He loved and respected the doctor as he did no other man; he looked upon him with the affection and veneration accorded by a, Highlander to the chief of his clan. He had lied to him, lied as he would have been ashamed to do in any other matter; but this was for Bob. Should he confess now and tell him all the truth? Eccies knew what was passing through the poacher's mind. The indecision, the uncer- tainty, the lies, and the confusion into which he had got told a tale, and the suspicion which had all along presented itself so vividly to him, and which had been confirmed by the lawyer, came with redoubled force. "Ben, Miss Bob did it?" he asked after a pause, and hoping against hope. "Yes, sure." answered the poacher nnder his breath. He was certain of it, and yet the confirma- tion of the certainty was a. shock. Nothing was said for some time. The poacher shook off the snow which had gathered upon him. "Ben. will you tell me the truth now, the whole truth, everything—everything?" "If you must know, you must. Then Ben o'r Cae related what he knew of the incident from beginning to end, and he told Eccles how Bob had recovered conscious- ness. and had pointed to the dead man and proclaimed that she herself had murdered him. Eoeles listened in silence. He could not understand how Bob could have struck ..ud] a. violent blow, nor what her motive could have been. It was so foreign ti\ her nature. such an absolute contradiction to the gentle, loving Bob he had always known. That ehe possessed fire and passion he knew right well, but, that she possessed a hatred sufficiently violent to impel her to such a crime it was impossible to realise. "Just one thing more, Ben: what made you take the blame upon yourself? Do you know, man, that you run a great risk in such a case?" "Yee, yes, I know. I was only a 'dda-i-ddim'; it would not be much loss if I was hung." Eccies remembered what Mr. Theobald had said about some infatuation. If it were 80, he sympathised deeply with the poor devil who had been ready with his own life to prove the depth of his affection. "I have no right to ask you more, Ben, and I don't wish to pry into your secrets, but I hope that if ever you want a. frieud you will not forget me." And Eccies held out his hand to the poacher. "I will bold your confidence sacred, for you have a great, and noble heart." Ben accepted the proffered band. He had confessed so far;, etocnld he tell the r"t? It might justify him in the eight of his friend. He held the hand of Eccies in hie powerful I gra.sp, then, filled with emotion, he said- "Dr. Eccies, you are a man; you know what it is to—love. Since I was as high as this," and he indicated t'ne height of a little child, "I did love Miss Eno. I know well enough it. was mad of me to think of such a thing; I know she was a lady, ajid I was only-what? a poacher, a, 'dda-i-ddixrr; I lose my heart to work-I lose my soul. I was drink so that I forget, but I could not forget, for I love her always. I live only so that I can see her; I think of her always, and when she went to that Llwchwr Cave I follow from far off and watch, and sometimes she would speak to me; always so kind—so gentle. Ah Tears were in his eyes, and Ecclee could feel the hand he held tremble. Someone passed upon the road, wrapped close; the wayfarer looked back; he seemed to recognise the two men who were speaking together so earnestly, and he paused as if to speak, then he changed his mind; it was snowing hard, and he was in a hurry W get home. "Good night he called. "Good night:" responded Eccles. The interruption stopped Ben in his avowal. "And so that is why you took the blame upon yourself?" asked the doctor. "Yes, sure; they can hang me for it, and good job; better that way than end up in the poorhouse or on the roadside!" Ben had evidently brooded over the fate of ne'er-do-wells. "Nonsense, man. you must not speak like that." Eccles made a firm effort to overcome the depression of spirits into which they had fallen. "I cannot guess how or why Miss Bob came to do this thing, and it is very difficult to believe that she did do it—very difficult. But ehe has recovered her senses now, and it is possible she may give an explanation. 11, may turn out to have been an accident; although I agree with Morgan in not being able to suggest the sort of accident. Mean- while, Ben, you must give up al! idea of shift- ing the crime, if it be a crime, upon your own shoulders. I could not allow it, and so yon vrould only make matters worse. Good night, Ben; I must return now. Good night, my lad; I am glad I saw you to-night. Get along home; and don't drink!" "Noswaith dda. ehi-Doctor Eccles-never fear —I have not drink since—not a drop-when a man is full of drink—he is say things—he ia talk foolish. Noswaith dda chi, sir I" The poacher trudged off upon the road towards the forge, and Eccles, knocking off the snow which had gathered thick upon him. returned to the rectory. CHAPTER XXV. A Mystery Solved. The doctor had closed the door of the sick room gently, and for a few momenta the two girls remained in silence, with only the great clock downstairs to mark the flight of time. The fire flickered on the hearth, now burning up and throwing dark shadows across the room, then dying down until it was so dark that yon could see the snow falling steadily outside. The rector had been called away. Eccies had strongly advised him not to see Bob to-night; the fewer people she saw the better at the first. Her reason hung on so delicate a thread that the strain must be as light as possible. Sleep-real, natural sleep-was what ehe wanted above all things. Winifred smoothed the hand that rested iJ1 hers, and the minutes slipped away. "Winnie!" "Yes, dear." "Are we alone—quite alone?" "Yes. Steve has gone out; he will be bacfc presently. Do you want anything?" The sick girl turned uneasily so that, she might see her sister. She hesitated a moment, then- "Winnie, tell me what has happened. X know he is dead-Mr. Winstaple. I killed him! Oh, but I did not mean to; indeed, indeed, I did not mean to." Winifred turned deadly pale, she felt faint- ing; her heart for a moment fluttered, but she knew the importance of bearing up, at any rate, until Stephen should come back. Sha braced herself vigorously. "Why don't you speak, Winnie? Oh, if yotr oould realise what I suffer you would speak and tell me what hae happened. Have they accused anyone else. Do they know? Oh, it was horrible, horrible!" "Hash. dear, hush; no one knows anything. They found him dead; they thought at first that Stephen-" "Stephen!" cried the sick girl, almost ehriek. ing. "Stephen! Oh, no, no, they could never think that, never." She sat up wildly in the bed; the idea was terrible to her. "Xo. they found out their mistake;' they have released him. To-day they set him free. Now, now, lie down—don't—don't. Oh, I wish he would come back!" "They accused Stephen-of murder! Why- did they net tell me? Why did they Jet me lie here for three WackE? They put him U. prison? It was too cruel!" (To be continued). "Y.
