t RACE WITH RU))i, I By HEADON H!LL, Author of "Guilty Gold," "The Queen of Night," "By a Hair's Breadth," "The Peril of the Prince," &c., &c. SYNOPSIS OF PREVIOUS CHAPTERS. Leopold Tannadyce it a. money-lender and financial shark, who holds heavy mortgages on the estate of Sir Charles Roylance. which he is about to foreclose, for he comets Roy- lance Abbey, hoping to acquire social status by becoming its owner. Roylance has a horse. Starlight, with which he hopes to win the Century Stakes, and. by means of long price betting. gain sumcient money to pay on' the mortgages. Ta.nna.dyce has a jackai in a. broken-down peer. named Hooligan, whom he has rnined. and whom I he now uses, in connection with a bettmg agency, to tip Starlight, and thus reduce the odds p-eventing the coup Roylance seeks to bring oS'. The betting agency, "Parker's Lightning Finals, ia run by a ruined gentleman named Beau- champ, assisted by his daughter, Nance, who discovers Tannadyce's designs and seeks to eave Roylance. who, in better days, was her sweetheart. Hooligan is suspected of the murder of a. woman found dead on Epsom Do wm;. She is the sister of a 'bookie'' named Tidmarth, was once a music-hall eta,r. and was inveigled into a sham marriage by Hooligan. Tidmarsh. who is unaware of the identity of his sister's betrayer and mur- derer, has sworn to hunt him to the death. Nance has. unfortunately, attracted the un- pleasant attentions of both Booligan and Tannadyce. CHAPTER XX!V.—Continued. I The Convenient Brougham. I So they pledged their troth, these two who I had been undeclared sweethearts so long, and time sped aJl unheeded till Mary Bremner cajne in to lay Nance's modest meal. It was the signal for Sir Charles's departure, but he promised to come a-gadn very soon, and in the meanwhile he bep-ged Nance to wire him at once if there was any change in her father's condition. It was not till he had gone that Nance remeaibered that in her absorbing happiness she had quite forgotten to consult him as to the course she ought to pursue with regard to Lord Hooligan, and her suspicions of the ru&an peer. However, the glad thought remained that ahe would soon have another opporturity, and all tha,t d&y and the next she trod on air. exalted by the sudden revulsion from despair to sweet expectancy. In the first shock of her misery after the outrage on Mr. Bea.uchamp. when the publicity in the papers made it necessary to explain matters to Mrs. Bremner, she had edao confided the trying position she had been pla-ced in with regard to Sir Charles Roylanca and his horse. Now it wae her glad privilege to receive her kind landlady's congratulsH-ionw on the parsing of the cloud. Mary Bremner, of course, told her husband. and the Lawyer's clerk fully shared his wife's pleasure &t the happiness of th% fair girl who had befriended them in their distress. But on the second evening &ftt?r Sir Charles's call, Bremner bought Tidmarsh home with him, and both men were looking serious and un- easy. Mr. Tidmaj-sh had been nned jEZO that morning aa the remlt of the mid, but it soon became apparent, th&t his gra.vity w&a t not due to that. "Mary, do you think Miss Beancha,mp would aee Mr. Tidma.rsh?" Bremner said nervouBly. "He has got Borne information affecting Sir Charles Boylance. He has told it to me, under pronuee of my not Baying anything myself. Mid I certainly think she ought to know." "Fa.ir exchange is no robbery, ma'am, H Mtid Tidmaj'&h sheepiehly. "I'm Do black- madlar, but I think the young lady can do me & turn. And, mind you, I know she's a proper pood aort. I shan't be rough with her." Mn&. BTemneT suammed him up with a. shrewd, woma.oiy clanoe, and consented to tfLke up the message. So it was that the big bookmaker made an awkward entrance into the little parlour and Blood ahyly angering his hat before the oocupajit of the room. You have no bad mews of Sir Charles—he hae not met with <t.n a<ccident?" asked Na-nce a,nxiously. No, .Miaa; it &in't eo bad a.a that," Tid- ma.rsh replied. "That's wha,t rni here for, Miss; but—but," stammered Tidma'rsh, "it'B against the grain to drive & baivadn with you. I-I want some- Hung off yon in return. "The baronite's a Sporteman and a. gentlem-an, &nd I'll ta.ke you both on trust. When Sir Charles comes you tell him that Tajmadyce means to dia- train on Staj-light next Tuesday, the night before the ra<e. He's got judgment ag-&inst Sir Charles on a. stray debt of J55.000, and he's going to collar the horse. so a& it can't run and win a. big stake. I heard something in Ia.wyer Na.tb&n'a omce, where Bremner works, and we have put our heads together, a.nd that's how it nguree out." Nan,oe seized the bookmarker's greaA hand and wrung it hajd. "A thousand thanks'" she cried. "I think with your warning we Bha.11 be able to defeat Mr. Ta-nnadyce, and I ajn sure, when I have consulted Sir Cb&rles to-morrow, tha-t I shall be able to unseat my lipe to you a,bout that morning." So Mr. Tidmarsh departed, well pleased at having stolen a ma<rch on Inspector CroaJ. After he had gone. Nance eat in the gloam- ing and thought over the lasl move of the dastard enemy. At nine o'clock she rang the bell and asked Mrs. Bremner to request her husband to step up. Mr. Tom Barren, tha celebrated Epsom trainer, had enjoyed his earix dinner &nd waa sitting on the verandah of hLs com- fortable house on the slope of the Downa, sipping his post-prajidial aJlowance of 'well- diluted whisky emd -water. The verandah abutted on the stable yard and looked towai'<ls the high wall in which were set the entrance gates; on either h&nd. fonning two sides of the equare, ran the ranges of stabling in which Mr. Barren's equine charges were L-t&-ing their midday rest. The trainer was well pleased with himself and all the world, for he had. never felt more certain of pulling off a great coup than with Starligilt in the ew Century Handicap at Sajidowu. Park the following week. Re was doubly glad of this, became of tJl the owners for whom. be trained Sir Charles Hoylanee was hiB favourite, a.nd he waft awa-re, without knowing details, that the popular young baronet was in 'embaj'rassed. circuni&tanees. Moreover, he Etoo<i to m&ke a good cum on the colt himself. In spite of the iirst mysterious elevation of the hor&e to the poniticn. of favourite, he had t&ken full advantage of the subsequent fall in the betting. 'The ra-ce is M good as over; there'a nothing in the eame street with my -chest/- nut beauty," he muttered between the pufEN of his cigar, as he lazily contemplated the peaceful yard. There was no one a.boo.t bmt a stable-boy filling buckets at the pnmp in the centre, and no sound but the occasiomal ring of an iron-shod hoof or the rit-tUe of ib headstall in the stables. Suddenly Mr. BaJ"ron raided himself ø and became all aJert a-ttention. A mmm had a.ppeaj'ed between the rails of the grwa pates. He tried the latob withoat reMtlt. for it was a strict rule of the sternly dut- c'plin.x! e&iaMiRhjBfnt that the cato; obfklald be kept locked aad no su-AR&2v sdmitto* without the mastf'r's euthority. "Chap after & job, Nir," he tend with a; touch of his forelock. It happened that Mr. Barren 'wae ehort- handed, and he gave orders for the adrntt- sion of the applicant, watching the la-tter with a critical eye as he crossed the yard. The man'6 gait and the way he wore hia threadbare but horsy clothes left no doubt aa to his caJling. Whatever his oha.racter might be, he was clearly on familiar tarm* with the noble quadruped. "Well, my lad; what is it?" Mr. Barrom asked sharply. He was a- kind-hearted, bine man, but he believed in keeping hi< "helps" in their placee. 'Thought you might nnd a. billet for me, sir," was tJhe reply. "I'm out of collar six weeks now, and I'd do any work you mitIA put me to—cleaning or anything. I'm too heavy to ride r&cehorses at exercise-" "So I see. Been in a racing stable before?** "No, sir; private service." "Well, I've got room for a handy man t-hat knows horses. Let's see your testimonials." But mart was just what the applicant could not do. He explained tha.t for lacit of money he had tramped from London, and did not care to carry about his precious references on such adonbt- ful expedit-ion. He could, however,,tgo back and fcuch them, and return the following day. He was certain t-hat they wonid prove satisfactory. **0h, of course, you're am unfledged -igal my lad; any one can see that with half M eye," replied Mr. Barroa drily. :Nevert.heleøa., he rather liked the look of the trim-built;. young fellow, who did not whiDe. or waste unnecessary words, and he consented to keep the place open for him till the mor- r&w. when, if his character was vouched for. ihe would engage him as a stable-help. "What's your name?" the trainer asked, M the door behind him opened, and a neat aej" vant-maid came out of the house on to the verandah, bearing a telegram on fh tr&y, which she presented to her master. "Fred Bolton, sir," the applicant replied tMaartly, without at nrst paying aay atten- tion to the maid. Mr. Bajron'e gaze waa on him, and he guessed that a roving eye for the fair sex would imperil his chances. But though he did not look at once ttt the girl, she looked &t him, and started and colour. And the moment he hia name her colour grew deeper still, and she sidled closer to him, and so stood, trying to attract his attention, while Mr. Barren perused the telegrajn and pencilled a reply. Her overtures were so unmistakable that the prospective stableman stole an angry glance at her, and whispered almost inandibly: "Keep away, can't yon." It was the maid's turn to look angry now- so angry that she appeared to be on the point of an outspoken retort, when the tramer mulshed writing the reply, and bade her give it to the messenger with all speed. "Well, my lad, that's all, I think," he said, perceiving the applicant etill waiting. "Come back to-morrow." But Mr. Pred Bolton hesitated. "Beg par- don, sir. if I make too bold, but I always take a pleasure in my work. My testimonials are all right. It s a sure thing yom'U engage me when yon see them. I should be so proad to see the cracks Im. to help tend." Mr. Barren fancied himself a judge of human na.ture, and he thought he detected the genuine ring of disinterested devotion to duty in the request. He rose and nicked the ash off his cigar. "Come alonar. then," he said, "I'll show you round myself." At the same time he chuckled inwardly at the notion that, if by chance this extremely promising young man should have chariehed the evil design of being aent rcmmd with a subordinate whom he could pump, he had defeated it by escorting him personally. He led the way to the right-hand stable nrst. amd, possiMy inspired by his mtodest whisky, waxed bluntly eloquent on tOO identity and past perior-anoes, but not on the future prospects, of the occupants of the looae bow& Botton liste'ned respectfully, touching his.. freely, bet without comment.
